There is only one film festival dedicated to telling the stories of American veterans. To mark its tenth year celebrating filmmaking about the military, the GI Film Festival is partnering with Fathom Events on April 7 for a screening of military movies in theaters across the country. Gary Sinise calls it an “incredible one-night cinematic salute to the troops.”
Hosted by Navy veteran, actor, and comedian Jamie Kaler, the show will be broadcast at local theaters and will feature two short films that will premier at the festival.
“The Real Inglorious Bastards” tells the story of Operation Greenup. During World War II, Jewish refugees joined the U.S. Military for stage one of the most daring special operations campaigns in the history of warfare. The screening includes the last public interview with the film’s hero, 94-year-old Fred Mayer.
In “Climb,” Sergeant Rob Jones, a bilateral above-the-knee amputee, bikes from Maine to California during the coldest winter on record to raise money for military charities. After the screening, the audience will get to hear from Jones in a taped interview.
The festival, screening 75 films, will be held in Washington, D.C., from May 21-29. Events kick-off with a concert by Gary Sinise and the Lt. Dan Band.
