The 10 Best Steven Spielberg Films

3. A.I. Artificial Intelligence (2001)

Like Always, A.I. puzzled audiences and didn’t receive the attention it deserved, but this adaptation of the Pinocchio legend as developed by Stanley Kubrick showcased Spielberg’s ability to combine micro and macro issues to spellbinding effect.

A little robot boy (Haley Joel Osment) who yearns to become human but is instead cast away by his adopted family goes on a journey that spans a vast amount of time, powered by an innocent but indomitable love.

2. E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial (1982)

Keeping in touch with a child’s viewpoint without letting an adult’s cynicism or condescension cloud the magic was why Spielberg managed to make such a classic film out of such a simple fable. Endearing, beautiful and exhilarating, E.T. was self-contained perfection, which is why Spielberg never made a sequel.

1. Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981)

Making an homage to adventure yarns of yesteryear? Anyone can do that. Making something in the same spirit, but far better? That’s what Spielberg did with a film that never lets up, never makes you stop squirming, smiling, laughing and cheering. Raiders of the Lost Ark might be the funnest film ever made.
