For two weeks, no. That’s the kind of thing we did in 1918. But in 1918 our polity was much more mature and sensible. And even I — who should know better — failed to appreciate just how much worse our political class and political culture are now than they were then, which wasn’t exactly a great time either. But at least in 1918, the Karens didn’t have the vote.

PUBLIC HEALTH’S TREATMENT OF THIS PANDEMIC HAS BEEN A DEBACLE ON ALL LEVELS: The Fun Police Should Stand Down: Social gatherings provoke moral indignation—but bringing in law enforcement will promote injustice, not reduce infections.

As long as any clusters of infections are linked to parties, public-health officials will need to figure out how to help people avoid these dangers. Public health is a service industry, and it cannot serve customers without first trying to understand them. Instead of yelling at people for being careless and selfish—a perfectly understandable reaction—let’s start by asking why people are partying.

The end of the coronavirus pandemic is not, unfortunately, nigh. As these months drag on, people are seeking out social contact not out of selfishness but because, like going to the grocery store, human connection is an essential activity. Americans are experiencing a pervasive, long-term collective trauma, and our endurance will come from the relationships we’re able to sustain during the pandemic. Social capital—that is, the norms, values, and connections that people share—is an important determinant of how well they can weather and recover from a crisis. If public-health professionals want Americans to persist, they need to adopt messaging and policies that minimize infection while also maximizing resilience and well-being. Instead of turning partygoers into criminals, officials can offer safer ways for people to stay connected—and support struggling businesses in the process—by opening, redesigning, and loosening restrictions on the use of outdoor spaces. . . . The combination of criminalization and unscientific moralism is ineffective and counterproductive, and often leads authorities to take actions that may yield more infection.

It’s also rapidly robbing public health officials of any moral authority. But people tend to be control freaks in this field, and they mostly hear from angry, control-obsessed Karens.

PAST PERFORMANCE IS NO GUARANTEE OF FUTURE RESULTS: Democrat women to media: Don’t even think about sexist or racist coverage of Biden’s running mate.

It is as though these liberal women expect conservatives to forget how Sarah Palin was treated. Democrats said she was uneducated, ignorant, possibly having a child that wasn’t her husband’s, a hick from Alaska, she wore the wrong clothes, she didn’t speak well, they mocked her religion, and so on. It was hideous. Sadly, the Democrats were often joined by McCain’s own staff in treating Palin badly. So, forgive me if I’m less than sympathetic of whatever coverage the Democrat women now think is coming down the pike for a Democrat woman running for vice-president.

VIRGINIA POSTREL: Reopening Schools Is Critical. Teachers Should Do More to Help: Coronavirus risks can be successfully managed, but a powerful lobby is blocking the classroom door.

When the Los Angeles Unified School District announced on Monday that it will not resume any in-person instruction this fall, it was a political victory for teachers and a defeat for families, science and opportunity for all.

The teachers’ union opposed reopening schools amid the continuing rise in Covid-19 cases locally, and lobbied for an early resolution to eliminate uncertainty.

Individual teachers were adamant about not taking risks. “As a teacher of 20 years, I can tell you there is NO WAY I would agree to go back to the classroom this year without hospital-grade PPE,” one wrote on the NextDoor social media site.

“I’ve taught for 15 years,” wrote another. “I catch every cold, sniffle and cough that enters my room. Call me selfish but I’m not willing to die so we can be less inconvenienced.”

Parents weren’t thrilled, however. “The prospect of another few months, an additional semester or, God forbid, a full year of studying from home is enough to make many parents, and their kids, burst into tears,” wrote Kerry Cavanaugh, a Los Angeles Times editorial writer with two kids in district schools. Political leaders, she complained, “have dedicated far more energy in reopening restaurants, bars and tattoo parlors than in figuring out how to safely educate the next generation. Schools are essential but they’ve been treated like optional services.”

Cavanaugh’s kids aren’t typical. Most L.A. public-school students are poor (nearly 80 percent qualify for free lunches) and Latino (73 percent). Although most aren’t themselves immigrants, about one in five is still learning English. Assuming parents still have jobs, they are likely to be essential workers who have to leave the house every day.

These students and their parents are not, in other words, the people debating and deciding whether schools should resume in-person instruction. They have no voice in the discussion. Yet they bear the brunt of the burden—and provide a central justification for public schools. Tax-funded education is supposed to give every child a chance to learn, regardless of income, to the economic and civic benefit of the general public.

Coronavirus policy in many places is being made by a coalition of Karens and activists who have less skin in the game than average people, much less the disadvantaged.

A San Francisco city official is taking aim against so-called “Karens” — by introducing an ordinance making it illegal to report bogus “racially biased” calls to cops.

Hollow gestures of corporate solidarity are meant to appease everyone apart from the people living with the every day stigma of police profiling, who couldn’t care less. Nobody asked to remove old episodes of the Golden Girls over mud masks or for white actors to give up their work voicing black characters. But the companies know that if the media and politicians will use a a private citizen in Central Park’s confrontation with a bird watcher as a symbol of systemic racism to distract from their disastrous decades of policies, then they will surely come after a corporate brand of rice or syrup.

DON SURBER: Cool Hand Trump. “As the president takes heat from Chicken Littles who whine about acting presidential, President Trump remains coolly presidential in handling two nation-paralyzing events simultaneously. In both cases, the president gave Democrats plenty of rope and watched them hang themselves.”

Covid 19 so failed Democrats that they unleashed Antifa to turn cities aflame in the summertime. How is that working for them? Seattle’s Karen mayor, Jenny Durkan, stuck her tongue out at the president and turned six blocks of her city over to these thugs. Three weeks later, she had police shut it down after the thugs went to Her House. How dare they? She wants to talk to their manager.

Democrats thought President Trump would send the riot police to shut them down. He did when the thugs took over the park across from the White House and torched a church. The press made it look awful. President Trump adapted to the situation. He took a step back. Democrats went crazy and tore up city after city after city. Their thugs acted like the criminals they are and eventually got arrested.

The Washington Post today complained, “Trump’s Twitter feed reads like a local crime blotter as he stokes a culture war.”

No, dearie, he is just shining the light on these hooligans because otherwise, democracy dies in the darkness of a mob of Democrats. . . . The last 24 hours have returned the election to normal. Democrats are doomed.

Flashback: “It is impossible to understand the politics of the Left without grasping that it is all about deniable intimidation.”

That’s why they don’t want you to own guns. And that’s why the Ken-and-Karen case has the left and its media enablers so upset. They want you cowering in your home, calling for police protection that their political action has made sure won’t come. Or worrying that that might happen so that you yield to their demands. If you’re out on the steps with guns in your hands, suddenly the script has flipped. Either they’re intimidated, which is bad for morale when you’re running a mob, or they escalate and become so violent that the “deniable” part of the intimidation is gone, because they can’t pretend even to themselves that this was a “parade” of “peaceful protesters,” and a more violent response to the mob becomes certain in the future. And while mobs can dish out violence, they usually don’t take it very well, lacking discipline and cohesion. That’s why the goal is to keep the violence ongoing, but at a low enough level that it seems easier to go along than fight. Open resistance interferes with that, and sets an example for others.

WALL STREET JOURNAL: News From the Non-Lockdown States: Per-capita Covid fatalities were 75% lower in open states.

GOP governors have faced enormous media pressure to lock down their states in solidarity with Democrats, and some now are getting browbeaten to shut down again amid coronavirus flare-ups. So it’s worth pointing out that states that didn’t lock down this spring kept the virus under control and experienced fewer deaths than most that did.

A new analysis by The Sentinel, a Kansas nonprofit, compares the 42 states that shut down most of their economies with the eight that did not. The latter group includes mostly rural states with some small metropolitan areas: North and South Dakota, Nebraska, Iowa, Arkansas, Oklahoma, Wyoming and Utah. Private employment on average fell by 7.8% between May 2019 and May 2020 in these states while plunging 13.2% in the others.

Rural state economies generally rely more on “essential” services like agriculture and food production, and some industries like energy and hospitality would have shed jobs regardless of the lockdowns. Still, private job losses were higher in states that locked down like Colorado (9.5%) compared to economically similar ones that didn’t like Utah (4.6%).

Yet per-capita Covid fatalities in states that stayed open were on average about 75% lower than those that locked down. One reason is that deaths in most states, regardless of whether they locked down, have been concentrated in nursing home facilities and minority communities that have higher rates of underlying health conditions and multigenerational housing.

This is a main reason hospitalizations and deaths continued to surge in states like New York, New Jersey, Illinois and Massachusetts long after lockdowns took effect. About half of deaths in New Jersey and Illinois have been in nursing homes, and most others have been in dense low-income minority neighborhoods where social distancing is difficult.

Deploying more tests and protective equipment can help shield these vulnerable communities, and citizens can do their part by donning face masks in public indoor locations like supermarkets. But governors don’t need to intubate their economies to save lives.

Tell it to Karen.

Largely confined to their homes and worried about the spread of the coronavirus and its risks to their own health or that of loved ones, a segment of the United States has turned informant, calling the police, public health authorities and the employers of people they believe are violating social-distancing decrees or stay-at-home orders.

Across the country, these complaints have led to shutdowns of dog groomers and massage establishments as well as citations and police scoldings to restaurant and bar owners whose patrons are lingering too close to one another. . . .

Some people are resorting to anonymous acts of public shaming. The tone is nasty at times.

In Manhattan’s East Village, profanity-laden posters have been tacked to telephone poles chastising people for not wearing face masks. In Long Beach, Wash., a popular weekend getaway for Seattleites that had been closed, a flyer left on car windshields said, “Your vacation is not worth our lives.” On Twitter, the hashtag #FloridaMorons was used to shame citizens by posting photos of crowded beaches after they recently reopened.

WEIRDLY, THEY WERE ALL NAMED KAREN: Personal information from 900+ St. Louisan tipsters exposed on social media. “A spree of social media posts this week warn that St. Louis County released the information it got from people who reported businesses in violation of the stay-at-home order. The document, released in response to a Sunshine Law request, included names and contact information of the people making the reports. In their messages, some asked for anonymity. . . . The Missouri Sunshine Law gives the public and media the right to request records made or received by any public agency, with some exceptions. Among those exceptions is a clause allowing tips to municipal hotlines about abuse and wrongdoing to be withheld. But the county’s review of the request found no reason to withhold information about who sent the tips.”

You can ask for anonymity, but you may not be entitled to it. And the presumption should be against anonymity.

LIFE IN TENNESSEE: I listened to Gov. Lee’s reopening plan press conference on the radio a few minutes ago. Sounds sensible to me. The press was better than the one at Trump’s briefings, but not by much. The very first question, on behalf of the state’s Karen population I guess, was basically why the Governor wasn’t unleashing thousands of inspectors to keep everyone in line. The second was why the Governor wasn’t issuing a mask to each Tennessean before reopening anything. The third question, on daily numbers, actually produced a useful discussion of testing populations, where we got a one-day bump in the numbers because we tested the Bledsoe County correctional facility which had multiple cases.

Meanwhile, in my neck of the woods: 24 active Knox County COVID-19 cases; 207 total. “The number of confirmed COVID-19 cases in Knox County grew by one on Friday to 207 with active cases at 27. The total number of recovered cases rose to 179 from 173. Of the 207 cases, 31 of them have resulted in hospitalization at any point during the illness. This figure does not reflect the number of patients currently hospitalized in the county. Six cases currently require hospitalization.” Still just four deaths, a number that has held steady for quite a while. (The headline, which says 24, appears to be correct.). The 27 in the text appears to be a typo, judging by what’s on the KCHD site.

UPDATE: Here’s a report on Lee’s plan.

Government run schools are institutionalized child abuse. They teach little and much of what they teach is wrong. And for most Americans, they’re the only place where they routinely fear physical violence.

I thought Newsweek owned the controls to the DNC multiverse:

Hillary Clinton Is President in an Alternate Universe, Where America Is Great Again.

—Headline, Newsweek, July 12, 2017. (Newsweek also famously dropped the handle on a “Madam President” issue on election night, in a classic “Dewey Defeats Truman” move.)

If Beto O’Rourke was president, here’s how he would handle migrant caravan.

And of course, the ultimate leftwing fantasy moment from Newsweek immediately after the November election: “Madam President: how Newsweek reported a Clinton victory.”

In the Age of Trump, White House press briefings have become a time for some reporters to have their fifteen minutes of fame. Reporters no longer try to disguise their own personal political opinions in the name of professional journalism. Few reporters are able to participate without looking like they are more concerned about a gotcha question against the president, his administration, or even the press secretary herself or himself. A prime example of this behavior is CNN’s White House correspondent Jim Acosta. He’s even written a book about covering Trump though the president is not even finished with his first term. He’s not the only one to do that, he’s just the most obvious example.

During the Great Hunkering Down period of the coronavirus pandemic, President Trump and his coronavirus task force have been giving daily press briefings. He’s been so good at it that his approval ratings are up and his harshest critics in cable news, CNN and MSNBC, decided to stop carrying them in their entirety. Imagine that – cable news networks so unhinged about a president that they don’t bother to cover press briefings concerning a pandemic. It is as though they cheer for failure just to be able to say Trump couldn’t handle the crisis. Those networks are only too happy to do puff piece interviews with the likely Democrat nominee Joe Biden, though.

Indeed they are.

OH BOY, IS AUNTIE MAXINE GONNA BE PISSED: A Democratic state representative from Detroit — who is also a woman of color — is crediting hydroxychloroquine and Republican President Donald Trump who touted the drug — for saving her in her battle with COVID.

“Whitsett said she was familiar with “the wonders” of hydroxychloroquine from an earlier bout with Lyme disease, but does not believe she would have thought to ask for it, or her doctor would have prescribed it, had Trump not been touting it as a possible treatment for COVID-19 […] “It has a lot to do with the president … bringing it up,” Whitsett said. “He is the only person who has the power to make it a priority.”

I can just imagine Maxine Waters saying she should have died like a “true sister” rather than acknowledge being helped by Bad Orange Cracker.
