NOTHING TO SEE HERE, MOVE ALONG: The FBI Mysteriously Close New Mexico Observatory. “The Sunspot Observatory is now currently closed to both staff and the public, with no word on why or when it will be open again.”

Fallen Angels storyline: They discovered we’re heading for a Maunder Minimum or worse and don’t want people to know.

Alternative: Another sighting of that cloaked alien spaceship.

UPDATE: “This is how it starts.”

It starts with a newspaper report about suspicious activity at a space research facility—government agents and military vehicles. The local sheriff gets angry and confused. Then the TV news reports feature interviews with locals saying things like, “Nothing really happens here very much. And since nobody knows, it could be almost anything.”

All that has happened over the last week at the National Solar Observatory in Sunspot, New Mexico, 130 miles southwest of Roswell—and the situation is still a mystery.

The truth is out there.

AN YOU THOUGHT FALLEN ANGELS WAS JUST A SCIENCE FICTION NOVEL: We were heading for an Ice Age — until humans started warming the globe. “A study published in the journal Scientific Reports provides new evidence that ancient farming practices led to a rise in the atmospheric emission of the heat-trapping gases carbon dioxide and methane—a rise that has continued since, unlike the trend at any other time in Earth’s geologic history. It also shows that without this human influence, by the start of the Industrial Revolution, the planet would have likely been headed for another ice age.”

FALLEN ANGELS IS JUST A SCIENCE FICTION NOVEL, RIGHT GUYS? RIGHT? GUYS? Sunspot update for July 2018: The Sun flatlines! “Except for two very short-lived and very weak sunspots that observers hardly noted, the Sun was blank for entire month of July. This has not happened since 2009, during the height of the last solar minimum. What makes this so significant and unique is that it almost certainly signals the return of the next solar minimum, a return that comes more than a year early. The solar cycle the Sun is now completing has only been ten years long. It is also one of the weakest in more than a hundred years. This combination is unprecedented. In the past such a weak cycle required a long cycle, not a short one.”

SOLAR ACTIVITY UPDATE: “Note that the peak for 24 was approximately half that of 23. Also note that we are currently already as low as the minimum that ended cycle 23, at approximately 8.5-9 years into an average-11-year cycle. Theoretically, we still have a couple of years to go before the actual minimum is reached, though 11 years IS an average. . . . Based on all this information, it is my considered opinion that we are about to enter an extended minimum, if we are not already in one.”

ASKING THE IMPORTANT QUESTIONS: Could reviving Woolly-Mammoth genes fight the effects of global warming?

Most of the hype so far has focused on bringing these shaggy beasts back to life using their permafrost-preserved DNA. But this time, scientists aren’t aiming for a “Jurassic Park” scenario — they’re not trying to bring back entire mammoths exactly as they were in the last ice age. Rather, they’re hoping to mingle some of the mammoths’ ancient genes with those of today’s Asian elephants (Elephas maximus), to increase the elephants’ tolerance to the cold, said George Church, a Harvard and MIT geneticist who is heading the Harvard Woolly Mammoth Revival team.

But it does not take a scientist to size up the effects of snowless winters on the children too young to remember the record-setting blizzards of 1996. For them, the pleasures of sledding and snowball fights are as out-of-date as hoop-rolling, and the delight of a snow day off from school is unknown.

‘I bought a sled in ’96 for my daughter,” said Dr. Michael Oppenheimer, a scientist at the nonprofit Environmental Defense Fund. ”It’s been sitting in the stairwell, and hasn’t been used. I used to go sledding all the time. It’s one of my most vivid and pleasant memories as a kid, hauling the sled out to Cunningham Park in Queens.”

The 26.6 inches of snow that fell in Central Park on Saturday is a one-day record for New York City.

The National Weather Service says the overall accumulation — 26.8 inches — is the second-most for a single storm in city history.

Meteorologist Faye Barthold says all but two-tenths of an inch of the city’s accumulation fell on Saturday, surpassing the previous one-day mark of 24.1 inches on Feb. 12, 2006.

Officials say the total of 26.8 inches that fell in Central Park during the storm is the second-most since officials began keeping snowfall records in 1869. That narrowly misses tying the previous record of 26.9 inches from February 2006.

Snow stopped falling in New York City shortly after 10 p.m. Saturday.

A travel ban keeping non-emergency workers off the roads was lifted early Sunday. Transit officials expect a gradual return of service.

THE CAMP OF THE SAINTS WAS JUST A NOVEL, RIGHT GUYS? RIGHT? GUYS? ‘Camp of The Saints’ Seen Mirrored In Pope’s Message.

The novel, which has been translated into English, is entitled Camp of the Saints, and posits that the liberalism of the West would cause Western nations to throw open their doors to so many migrants that it would spell the doom of liberal society itself. Raspail’s thesis, quite simply, is that liberalism is inadequate to defend liberalism.

All around the world, events seem to be lining up with the predictions of the book. The novel features a new pope, born in Latin American, who is “in tune with the times, congenial to the press” who preaches “universal love” and calls on the Western world to open its borders to the world’s migrants. Now, as in the novel, prominent political officials are urging on ever larger waves; secular and religious leaders hold hands to pressure blue collar citizens to drop their resistance; media elites and celebrities zealously cheer the opportunity that the migrants provide to atone for the alleged sins of the West— for the chance to rebalance the wealth and power of the world by allowing poor migrants from failed states to rush in to claim its treasures.

Raspail argues that the inability of the Western conscience to erect walls, to “put her foot down,” to turn people away, will lead to the undoing of Western civilization itself.

As the world’s eyes turn to the U.S. arrival of the pope, many conservatives are arguing that Jean Raspail’s book has perhaps come to life.

Earth should be nearing another frosty period — with a year-to-year expansion of polar and mountaintop ice. But that is not happening. And the reason seems to be a growing buildup of chemicals that warm the atmosphere, the so-called greenhouse gases. The drumbeat for another heavy icebreaker like the 240-foot Mackinaw started during the winter of 2013-14, when the Great Lakes were as much as 92.6 percent covered in ice. Two years ago, Lockwood put the chances of this happening at less than 10 per cent.” But, he says, human warming will prevent a Little Ice Age.

Er, Fallen Angels was science fiction, right guys? Right?

This is the height of the 11-year solar cycle, the so-called solar maximum. The face of the Sun should be pockmarked with sunspots, and cataclysmic explosions of X-rays and particles should be whizzing off every which way.

Instead, the Sun has been tranquil, almost spotless.

As W. Dean Pesnell, the project scientist for NASA’s Solar Dynamics Observatory, dryly noted, “We’re not having much of a solar maximum.”

A week ago, a solitary sunspot blemished an otherwise blank yellow disk. In the ensuing days, a few more specks appeared, but even a small explosion, or coronal mass ejection, last Thursday seemed like the halfhearted effort of a slacker star.

“The truth of it is there isn’t a lot going on,” said Joseph M. Kunches, a space scientist at the Space Weather Prediction Center. “It’s been a bit of a dud. You look at the Sun today and you say, ‘What?’”

The Arctic boom reminds us that global warming, like most every macro phenomenon, has good and bad effects. The pace of warming has slowed down in recent years and it’s uncertain what the long term effects of climate change will be. But even if we grant that some of the greens’ fears will be realized, there are still countervailing benefits to consider. It looks to us as if the affects of climate change are much more complex and harder to predict than green publicists claim; the earth’s climate system has surprised us before and is likely to surprise us again as the interactions and interrelations of different factors lead to unexpected changes in the world around us.

Given that climate change is a mixture of curses and blessings, any policy addressing it is going to involve trade-offs. Slowing it down, for example, would hurt some, help others. It’s not clear why a cold, Arctic-reliant country like Russia whose economy is linked to the oil and gas trade would find a benefit in cooperating with efforts to stop climate change. It also appears that human activities like farming are better able to adjust to temperature variations than some pessimists would have us believe. Crops like soya, corn and wheat can be bred (or genetically modified) to grow in warmer and dryer conditions at a modest cost.

Greens, many impelled by emotional overreactions or a deep inner belief that unfettered capitalism is a terrible thing, have tried to simplify the discussion about the earth’s changing climate into a morality play.

That’s because environmentalism is better understood as a religion than a scientific movement. Meanwhile, better to face global warming than a Fallen Angels scenario, which is also noted here.

Though the paper is the most complete reconstruction of global temperature, it is roughly consistent with previous work on a regional scale. It suggests that changes in the amount and distribution of incoming sunlight, caused by wobbles in the earth’s orbit, contributed to a sharp temperature rise in the early Holocene.

The climate then stabilized at relatively warm temperatures about 10,000 years ago, hitting a plateau that lasted for roughly 5,000 years, the paper shows. After that, shifts of incoming sunshine prompted a long, slow cooling trend.

The cooling was interrupted, at least in the Northern Hemisphere, by a fairly brief spike during the Middle Ages, known as the Medieval Warm Period. (It was then that the Vikings settled Greenland, dying out there when the climate cooled again.)

Scientists say that if natural factors were still governing the climate, the Northern Hemisphere would probably be destined to freeze over again in several thousand years. “We were on this downward slope, presumably going back toward another ice age,” Dr. Marcott said.

Instead, scientists believe the enormous increase in greenhouse gases caused by industrialization will almost certainly prevent that.

In Fallen Angels, environmentalists managed to stop the greenhouse emissions and an ice age ensued. Thank goodness they were less effective in real life.

GERMANY FACES ENERGY DISASTER NEXT WINTER, according to Germany’s Die Welt magazine:

Last winter, on several occasions, Germany escaped only just large-scale power outages. Next winter the risk of large blackouts is even greater. The culprit for the looming crisis is the single most important instrument of German energy policy: the “Renewable Energy Law.”

The dramatic tone of the report by the Federal Network Agency (FNA) on the near-blackouts last winter is hard to overestimate: although the cold spell was short and mild, the situation in the German electricity network was “very serious” according to the Agency.

Several times, the pre-ordered reserve power plants in Austria and Germany were fully utilized. On several occasions, the network operators were not even able to mobilize additionally needed emergency reserves abroad. The number of short-term emergency interventions in network and power plant operating shot up by more than 30,000 percentage points on some network portions.

“Had a failure of a large power plant taken place in this situation, there would have been hardly any room for maneuver available.” This quote from the FNA report is translation for “We narrowly escaped a catastrophe.”

There is no reason for a sigh of relief, however: Next winter, which will possibly be even more severe, everything could get much worse, officials warn. Because then even less base-load gas- and coal-fired power plants will be available to reliably compensate for wind lulls and the almost complete absence of solar power for months.

Less coal plants available? Good thing that could never happen here.

The figures suggest that we could even be heading for a mini ice age to rival the 70-year temperature drop that saw frost fairs held on the Thames in the 17th Century. Based on readings from more than 30,000 measuring stations, the data was issued last week without fanfare by the Met Office and the University of East Anglia Climatic Research Unit. It confirms that the rising trend in world temperatures ended in 1997.”

Getting more and more like Fallen Angels every day.

UPDATE: Thoughts from Mike Stopa. “Suppose it turns out that CO2 has essentially nothing to do with the earth’s climate. How will the history of this colossal mistake be written?”

MORE: Don Surber comments. “Do not expect the American press to pay any attention to this story. The Associated Press offered no re-write of the London Daily Mail’s blockbuster story.” Doesn’t fit the narrative. But watch the polls, which already show vastly increased skepticism over just a couple of years ago. Nowadays, the truth gets out.

Bad news for bankrupt governments, though, which were hoping that carbon taxes to “save the planet” would save their balance sheets. Now voters and taxpayers will be unlikely to go along.

MORE STILL: Maybe the Daily Mail’s willingness to report what the New York Times won’t explains why it has passed the Times to be the #1 newspaper in the world.

THE FALLEN ANGELS SCENARIO GETS ANOTHER BOOST: Human CO2 Emissions Could Avert the Next Ice Age, Study Says. “Earth could be entering a new Ice Age within the next millennium, but it might not, the deep freeze averted by warming from increased carbon dioxide emissions. Humans could be thwarting the next glacial inception, a new study says. Even in the comparatively long time scales of Earth history, we’re kind of overdue for another ice age — our current Holocene era has lasted about 11,600 years, roughly 600 years longer than the average interglacial (between-ice-age) periods of the past. If atmospheric CO2 levels were lower, the next ice age might have started sometime within the next 1,000 years, according to researchers from University College London and Cambridge University.”

SHANNON GOESSLING: Ice Age Threat Should Freeze EPA Global Warming Regs. Obviously, Shannon has never read Fallen Angels. Otherwise she’d know that even an actual, as opposed to threatened, ice age would simply be a reason to redouble our efforts against global warming.

I’D PREFER GLOBAL WARMING, THANK YOU: Earth Heading Into A Mini-Ice Age? Things look more and more like Fallen Angels. Or maybe a John Ringo novel. I’d rather skip those scenarios.

SO I TAPED AN INTERVIEW WITH JERRY POURNELLE in the PJTV studios in L.A., and he mentioned that Lucifer’s Hammer in the Kindle edition is doing shockingly well. I’m not surprised, and it certainly seems timely now, if perhaps not quite as timely as Fallen Angels.

SO MAYBE IT’S GLOBAL FREEZING AFTER ALL? It keeps looking more and more like Fallen Angels. Or maybe a John Ringo novel. I don’t want to live in either. . . .

I DON’T LIKE COLD: Prediction: Mini Ice Age Coming.

It’s looking more like Fallen Angels all the time.

FULL CIRCLE: What, we’re back to worrying about “global cooling” again? If that happens, we’re going to wish we’d spent the last decade coming up with new strains of frost-tolerant food crops, instead of banning incandescent bulbs. And Fallen Angels is looking steadily more prophetic . . . .

UPDATE: Reader John Chalupa writes: “Fallen Angels is available for download at the Baen Free Library.”

COED DORM ROOMS: “Starting next fall, Columbia University in New York City will institute a ‘gender neutral’ housing policy for everyone but freshmen. This means guys and gals can share a room.” Like that never happened before . . . .

Still not quite to the point of Fred Saberhagen’s ahead-of-its time PC spoof, Love Conquers All, where coed dorm rooms were mandatory. But, like Fallen Angels, it’s a science fiction story that doesn’t seem as fictional as it once did . . . .

ANN ALTHOUSE: “Affirm? We’re doing affirmations now? ‘Skeptics’… affirmations… is this religion?”

Fallen Angels doesn’t seem like such a stretch at the moment . . . .

GOOD NEWS! Global Warming Could Forestall Ice Age.

It’s like Fallen Angels come to life. “The human-driven buildup of heat-trapping greenhouse gases in the atmosphere appears to have ended a millenniums-long slide toward cooler summer temperatures in the Arctic, the authors of a new study report.”

“QUIET SUN” BAFFLING ASTRONOMERS, new flu outbreaks, and worries about “civil unrest.” I feel like I’m in a John Ringo novel. That is, when I don’t feel like I’m living in Fallen Angels.

DAVID HARSANYI: Debate Over: It’s Freezing.

Me, I’m grateful for all the carbon emissions from the Obama inaugural. The world’s looking more and more like Fallen Angels all the time.

CHALK ONE UP FOR THE FALLEN ANGELS SCENARIO: Earth would be heading to a freeze without CO2 emissions. “Scheduled shifts in Earth’s orbit should plunge the planet into an enduring Ice Age thousands of years from now but the event will probably be averted because of man-made greenhouse gases, scientists said Wednesday.”

HOW COMMUNICATIONS COMPANIES are preparing for a pandemic. Well, I’m glad that they are. But I’m currently reading John Ringo’s latest, which is about an outbreak of bird flu in a “year without a summer” — and now I see the above, and am waiting for the NASA press conference on solar cooling on Tuesday, and, well, I don’t want things to get any more realistic. I mean, even Fallen Angels doesn’t have a pandemic and an ice age.

As I recall, though, Ringo had the same feeling a little while ago. All full of carrots and apples, he is . . . .

I’VE MENTIONED FALLEN ANGELS BEFORE, the greenhouse/ice-age novel by Larry Niven, Jerry Pournelle, and Mike Flynn. It’s worth noting that you can also get it in electronic form via the Baen Free Library (thanks to reader John Chalupa for the tip).

And speaking of ice ages returning, John Ringo emails that his new science fiction novel, The Last Centurion, is based on a similar theme, and that reports of snow in Spokane in June have him worried he might have been ahead of the curve: “I wrote the damned thing spring of 2007 when eveything seemed fairly on track for normal temps. Given that serious climatologists are now discussing ‘mini-iceage’ I’m getting the puckering feeling Cassandra probably got.” Hey, Cassandra was always right. People forget that . . . .

I haven’t read the book, but I see from the Amazon page that it’s written “blog-style.” That’s kind of cool.

The scientists said periods of inactivity are normal for the sun, but this period has gone on longer than usual.

“It continues to be dead,” said Saku Tsuneta with the National Astronomical Observatory of Japan, program manager for the Hinode solar mission. “That’s a small concern, a very small concern.” . . .

The last cycle reached its peak in 2001 and is believed to be just ending now, Longcope said. The next cycle is just beginning and is expected to reach its peak sometime around 2012. Today’s sun, however, is as inactive as it was two years ago, and scientists aren’t sure why.

“It’s a dead face,” Tsuneta said of the sun’s appearance.

Let’s hope that Fallen Angels — the Larry Niven / Jerry Pournelle / Michael Flynn novel in which anthropogenic global warming is real, but turns out to have been masking the return of an ice age until CO2 emissions get cut — doesn’t turn out to be prophetic . . . .

BUT I HATE COLD WEATHER: Sorry to ruin the fun, but an ice age cometh. And I wish people would make up their minds. I don’t know what to wear.

Anyway, the Fallen Angels scenario is making a comeback.
