PAUL BEDARD: Historian: Trump best to handle virus crisis, ‘born for this moment.’

It’s been just shy of three months since the administration took its first action to fight off the coronavirus spread, and historians are already sizing up President Trump’s leadership.

Most have focused on what they view as his “offensive” use of the term “China virus.”

But author, historian, and former presidential adviser Doug Wead, who has followed every president since Gerald R. Ford, has been doing a back-of-the-envelope comparison of how the seven most recent presidents would have handled the crisis — and if they would have been successful.

The current fight favors a president quick to decide, willing to let businesses help out, friendly with the media, and with “a deep desire to do it right,” said Wead, whose latest book is Inside Trump’s White House: The Real Story of His Presidency.

Of the seven, he told us none had everything going for them, but two had three of four needed traits: Trump and Bill Clinton.

As Molly Hemingway tweeted yesterday:

In her attempt to dunk on Trump, Hillary’s is also tacitly admitting that she’s morally empty enough to take the CCP at the word when it comes to their Wuhan Coronavirus stats, a reminder of the bullet America dodged in 2016. Matt Margolis wrote yesterday at PJM that, “China’s confirmed cases topped out at around 80,000, but, as PJM’s Victoria Taft noted, China reportedly stopped conducting tests in order to show the world they’ve contained the spread of the virus. So, comparing any country to China at this point is useless.”

STAY OUT OF BIDEN’S LANE, HILLARY: It appears that Hillary Clinton plagiarized her Trump-eclipse joke from Bill Maher.

I AGREE, BUT… Ex-Clinton adviser: Coronavirus pandemic ‘changes the presidential race overwhelmingly in Trump’s favor.’

“This crisis completely changes the presidential race overwhelmingly in Trump’s favor,” Dick Morris, who was Clinton’s political adviser and later campaign manager, told radio show host John Catsimatidis on Sunday.

“There is no more oxygen left in the room for Joe Biden. … He can’t say anything. He can’t campaign. He can’t attack Trump. He can’t talk about [the coronavirus]. There is nothing left for him to say,” he added. “Biden is kind of an afterthought. He’s almost in the history books.”

Biden, who is likely to win the Democratic presidential nomination, and his rival Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders have been sidelined from campaigning across the country because of the pandemic. Trump has also canceled campaign events, but the White House has held daily news briefings on the crisis.

Morris argued Hurricane Sandy had a similar effect on President Barack Obama’s reelection and other policy issues that could derail Trump’s chances of keeping the White House have been brushed under the rug as the coronavirus pandemic takes precedence.

“There are no other issues anymore in America. Nobody’s thinking about immigration, or income inequality, or climate change,” he said. “All Trump has to do now is be a good president. … Ride out this epidemic. Succeed in containing it, and he’s home free.”

…don’t get cocky.

KIRA DAVIS: We Are So F***ing Done With China. “Seriously, no more messing around. No more cozying up to Chinese investors (I’m looking at you, Obama). No more handing over vital technology and information to the Chinese government (I’m looking at you, Mr. and Mrs. Clinton). No more back-end deals with Chinese security firms and tech providers (I’m looking at you, Joe Biden). No more Hollywood films made to please the Chinese investors (I’m looking at you, Matt Damon).”

IT’S AS IF THE WHOLE THING WAS POLITICIZED CRAP ALL ALONG: The Inevitable Shoe Drops: DOJ Dismisses Mueller’s Charges against Russian Businesses.

Any competent defense lawyer would have had a field day with the Obama Justice Department’s failure to have the FBI take possession and conduct its own forensic examination of the servers that were hacked. And what fun defense counsel would have had with DOJ’s delegation of that rudimentary investigative task to a DNC contractor with close ties to the Clinton campaign. (Yes, the forensic conclusions blaming Russia were paid for by the same folks who brought you the famously dodgy Steele dossier.)

Speaking of dodgy, recall that Team Mueller and the Justice Department dodged every case that would have called for proving Russia’s cyber theft. Even when they indicted WikiLeaks chief Julian Assange, the very Ground Zero of “collusion,” they resisted charging him with the Russian hacking scheme. Given that prosecutors and the FBI spent years investigating the president of the United States for this crime of the century, it should seem astonishing that they passed on charging the guy they’ve told us is the central conspirator with this crime.

They told us a lot of stuff. And they shouldn’t get away without consequences.

SUPER GAFFE-O-MATIC ’76: The Biden Campaign’s Biggest Technical Difficulty Is… Joe Biden. “Spare a thought today for our moral, ethical, and intellectual betters in the press. They’re going through a lot right now. In 2016 they sacrificed what was left of their dignity to drag Hillary Clinton across the finish line, and she failed them anyway. Now they’re expected to spend the next eight months cleaning up after this doddering old fossil, who makes Hillary look like a paragon of competence and health. No wonder they’re so grouchy all the time!”

RAMESH PONNURU: The Left’s Fantasy World Just Exploded.

The idea that Sanders could win was far from crazy, given his dedicated fan base. But the larger story line of socialism’s coming triumph was based on one misreading of political events after another.

In the first place, socialism hadn’t spiked in popularity. In 2010, Gallup found that 36 percent of the public embraced the label. Eight years later — following Sanders’s first run for the presidency, and in the same year Ocasio-Cortez got elected — that number had climbed up all the way to 37 percent.

Left-wing Democrats misunderstood the reason Sanders did so well in 2016. It was because Hillary Clinton was the front-runner. Few Democratic heavyweights were willing to take her on, and he was an idealistic alternative. He did more for socialism than socialism did for him. A poll taken that January found that Sanders’s supporters were less likely than Clinton’s to want a higher minimum wage or bigger government.

Clinton’s defeat that November further fed the myth. Sanders’s supporters instantly concluded that “Bernie would have won.” Many Democrats wondered whether Clinton had erred by not taking a tougher line on Wall Street or offering populist ideas on trade.

YOU’RE GONNA NEED A BIGGER BLOG: Democratic Presidential Clown Car Update for March 9, 2020. “EVERYBODY DROPPED OUT, except Grandpa Simpson, Grandpa Commie, and…Hot Surfer Girl? It’s Clinton-Sanders II, except Biden isn’t as widely loathed and Hillary was only physically decrepit. It’s no longer a clown car, but I’m going to keep the name because, you know, tradition.”

From — of course — America’s Newspaper of Record.

Former New York City Mayor Mike Bloomberg spent $500 million on his failed presidential campaign. That’s $500,000,000, by the way, with eight zeros.

His ads ran everywhere: No Virginian could load a YouTube video without seeing Hizzoner’s face. He bought time to playact as the president and update the country on the COVID-19 epidemic. He even bought ad time during Democratic presidential debates — padding out his arguments with unchallenged praise for the Bloomberg agenda. He hired a veritable army of staff (at good wages) and sent them out to knock on doors, flood phone lines, and ensure that voters got wall-to-wall coverage: all-Bloomberg, all-the-time.

But as Super Tuesday ended, it became Hangover Wednesday for the Bloomberg brigades. Spending $500 million, or nearly as much as Hillary Clinton’s campaign spent in 2015 and 2016 combined, managed to buy Bloomberg a solitary win — in the territory of American Samoa. There, Bloomberg won 175 votes (that’s not a typo), edging out Rep. Tulsi Gabbard (D., Hawaii), a native of the territory, who picked up a whopping 103 votes.

Bloomberg inadvertently slayed another myth as well: Mollie Hemingway: If Bloomberg Couldn’t Buy 2020, How Could Russia Buy 2016?

HEH: These suburban white women are ‘mortified’ they voted for Trump. But they’ll do it again.

There are lots of these women in North Carolina, which holds its Democratic primary this week on Super Tuesday, the single day when more voters head to the polls than any other this primary season. Winston-Salem is a progressive university town in the northwest part of the state, but considerably more conservative than nearby Durham or Raleigh. As one woman said, it’s a place with roughly equal numbers of “tattooed, pierced hippies” and people for whom “What church do you go to?” often immediately follows “What is your name?” Most people, multiple women noted, seem to identify as some brand of “moderate.” While the city itself went for Hillary Clinton in 2016, if you drive 15 minutes out in any direction, you’ll find yourself in a light pink precinct that voted, ever so hesitantly, for Trump.

With Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) now the clear Democratic front-runner, many centrist women in Winston-Salem find themselves in a tough spot. They hoped they’d be able to vote for someone other than Trump in 2020: Biden, maybe, or Sen. Amy Klobuchar (D-Minn.).

But if Sanders is the nominee, they say, “No way.”

Murphy doesn’t regret voting for Trump: She was never going to support Clinton. She will always remember the “60 Minutes” appearance Clinton made when Bill Clinton was running for president in 1992. Responding to a question about her legal career, Clinton said, “I suppose I could have stayed home and baked cookies.” To Murphy, that comment felt personal: If the two of them met at a party, Murphy says, she feels sure Clinton would not bother to talk to her, a marketing specialist who took years off to raise her kids, educated far from the Ivy League. Many of her friends feel the same way, she says.

“We’ll talk about how horrible Trump is, how embarrassing. We’re mortified. But then we’ll look at each other and be like, ‘Not having Hillary Clinton as president — worth it.’”

THE POOR MAN. I WAS VERY SORRY TO HEAR OF HIS IMPENDING SUICIDE:  Federal Judge Orders Hillary Clinton Deposition.

On Friday, Sen. Tim Kaine (D-Va.), Hillary Clinton’s 2020 running-mate, endorsed former Vice President Joe Biden, corralling the Democratic establishment around Biden’s struggling gaffe-riddled candidacy in an effort to stop new frontrunner Sen. Bernie Sanders (S-USSR).

“America is afflicted by a President who delights in division, cruelty, lies, and chaos. We deserve better in the Oval Office,” Kaine tweeted. “In Virginia’s primary, I will proudly vote for [Joe Biden]. Joe has exemplary heart, character, and experience—and he’s a leader our kids can look up to.”

Or not: Joe Biden Admits He Was Never Arrested in South Africa.

Mark my words, in the US the mortality will be negligible, except perhaps in those cities which have become highly fecalized environments.  The impact will be economic. And let’s just say that the impact to the economy is not — repeat not — the fault of the president who tried to bring our industry back to America and minimize our exposure to the vagaries of corrupt and secretive regimes. That the open borders, let every undocumented person in who can crawl across the border, health care for illegals, send all our jobs abroad crowd is pointing fingers at Trump as the chickens come home to roost is….  Well, as good as convincing our children that the party of slavery and segregation was always on the side of victims.

Guys, we either fight the propaganda or we die from it. Your choice.

ADVICE THAT WILL BE IGNORED: Don’t Do Russia’s Work. “What I do want to do here is to reinforce a point from the 2017 article: Russia’s main effort is to divide Americans against each other, not to support any particular outcome in any particular election. Irresponsible speculation that someone is being backed by Russia — let alone an actual agent of Russia’s — is doing the work of the Russians for them. Insofar as this kind of rhetoric is deployed without hard evidence, it is irresponsible. When American speakers with prominent platforms engage in this kind of irresponsible rhetoric, they can reach far more people and do far more damage than the Russian government’s propaganda arm could ever purchase with its limited resources.”

But they can’t help themselves, because they’re crazy. Plus: “If we look at who is actually doing Russia’s work — dividing Americans against one another with these suggestions of foreign influence — it turns out that these journalists are much better candidates for ‘Russian agents’ than any of the politicians (excepting Ms. Clinton, who is right there with the journalists advancing irresponsible rhetoric). I do not say this to accuse them, or anyone, of being a Russian agent. What I mean to say is that Putin has more reason to be happy because major TV networks are accusing the winner of the Nevada caucus of being a spy than he has reason to feel good about Bernie Sanders having won.”

BRIAN CATES: The ‘Wrong Scandal’ Keeps Winning.

One scandal, commonly referred to as “Russiagate,” claims that the man who had just won the election was an undercover agent who took orders straight from Moscow.

The other one that emerged claimed the first scandal was always a false construct of the rival Hillary Clinton campaign and its politicized allies within the federal government’s intelligence and law enforcement agencies. This second scandal came to be called “Spygate.”

One of these scandals was indeed fake and the other was very real.

Most of the U.S. media went all-in on the proposition that the fake scandal was real and the real scandal was fake.

However, the scandal that was endlessly promoted by mainstream news outlets turned out to be a hoax, as shown by the investigations by special counsel Robert Mueller and Department of Justice (DOJ) Inspector General Michael Horowitz. Meanwhile, the scandal they dismissed as a “wild conspiracy theory” turned out to be real.

JAMES O’KEEFE COLLECTS ANOTHER SCALP: ABC News suspends David Wright for remarks made in Project Veritas video.

The veteran reporter expounded at length on his political views. “I would consider myself a socialist, like I think there should be national health insurance,” he said. “I’m totally fine with reining in corporations, I think they’re too many billionaires, and I think there’s a wealth gap – that’s a problem.”

In the hidden video that Project Veritas said was filmed in New Hampshire during its primary’s coverage, Wright, 56, also called President Trump “a d—” while simultaneously complaining that Trump is sometimes not given “credit for what things he does do.”

Wright did not respond to Fox News’ request for comment. A rep for ABC News told Fox News he would be reassigned after serving his suspension.

“Any action that damages our reputation for fairness and impartiality or gives the appearance of compromising it harms ABC News and the individuals involved,” the rep said. “David Wright has been suspended, and to avoid any possible appearance of bias, he will be reassigned away from political coverage when he returns.”

Does the above spokesman, who issued the same statement to the Daily Caller in response to Wright being caught by one of O’Keefe’s hidden cameras, know that he works for the network that employs Clinton flack George Stephanopoulos, and recently had a former ABC employee fired at CBS for allegedly blowing the whistle on Jeffrey Epstein?

Elsewhere, Twitchy spots the Daily Beast’s Will Sommer tweeting, “ABC’s suspension of David Wright looks ridiculous now that the [James O’Keefe] video he got suspended for is out. Wright makes the same critiques of the broadcast news business that you’d hear in any journalism class.”

POSTMODERN PROBLEMS: Stunning: A Delusional Socialist Just Blew Away the Democrat Competition in Nevada. Now What?

My worry is less that Sanders could win in the fall — although I don’t completely discount the possibility — but that there’s enough of a constituency for bolshevism in the Democratic rank-and-file that he could win the nomination.

This is when sane people might encourage the DNC to go Full Bill Clinton and cheat, cheat, cheat.

HMM: Oddsmakers Say Democratic Race Just Got A Whole Lot Simpler.

According to Real Clear Politics’ latest averages of the various betting sites, Biden has collapsed from a high of 37.9% on January 20 to a grim 9.8% as of February 19. Warren peaked on October 13 at a field-burying 53.9% chance of winning the nomination. As of February 19, she’s all the way down at a dismal 3.6% (which is beneath Hillary Clinton, who’s not even in the race but who oddsmakers are saying still has a 4.9% chance of winning).

I REMEMBER WHEN BILLIONAIRES BUYING ELECTIONS WAS SUPPOSED TO BE AWFUL: Bloomberg quietly plotting brokered convention strategy.

Has he bought off Obama? Because this goes nowhere unless he’s got either Barack or Hillary in his camp, and the Clintons are awfully expensive.

#METOO DESCENDS INTO SELF-PARODY: Stephanopoulos Raves Over ‘Resilient’ Disgraced Democrat Katie Hill.

That’s pretty much to be expected from Bill Clinton’s flack, and the network that worked to get an alleged Jeffrey Epstein whistleblower fired — from another TV network.

Flashback to Joe Cunningham at Red State last October, after they exposed Hill for being “a person in power who used that power for sexual satisfaction. Because of the nature of the allegations, even the House Ethics Committee is looking into the alleged affair with a congressional staffer – a huge no-no in Congress.” Or as Ann Althouse wrote at the time, “She had sex with a staffer. Nancy gave her the boot. Media narrative: Vast Right Wing Conspiracy!”

Democrats Still Haven’t Come to Terms with 2016. “It takes some chutzpah to claim Comey doomed Clinton by revealing that story when he had previously intervened in the campaign to save her from becoming the first major-party presidential candidate to have to run under an indictment. The mass of evidence in the broader Clinton email scandal showed, at the very least, that her staff had engaged in lawlessness and obstructed justice in ways that make the actions of George Papadopoulos and Michael Flynn look piddling in contrast.”

ANALYSIS: TRUE. Political Pundits Have No Idea What They’re Talking About.

Warren’s collapse reveals the sorry state of today’s political media. From the perspective of voters who watch cable news and take seriously the so-called analysis and punditry they hear from so-called political experts in the media, Warren’s downfall is a shocking development. But it’s only the latest of many examples of said “experts” having absolutely no idea what they’re talking about and showing why no one should take them seriously.

Warren’s campaign, oddly enough, made this very point in a memo it sent to supporters (and the New York Times) ahead of the New Hampshire primary—in which Warren finished a distant fourth and failed to win any delegates. “People who are predicting what will happen a week from now are the same people who a year ago predicted that Beto O’Rourke was a frontrunner for the nomination,” wrote campaign manager Roger Lau.

Lau makes a legitimate point, but it applies to his own candidate as well. Warren, who made history as the “first woman of color” employed by Harvard Law School, was once widely touted by political pundits as the candidate to beat.

Not that their analysis was based on anything other than conventional wisdom. For most of 2019, betting markets viewed Warren as the second most likely candidate to win the nomination, behind former vice president Joe Biden. After New Hampshire, betting markets rank Biden fourth, at 9.2 percent. Warren is sixth, at 2.2 percent, behind Hillary Clinton.

To be fair, being behind Hillary Clinton is a lot safer than having her behind you.

SUPER GAFFE-O-MATIC ’76! Biden issues new campaign ad saying “We don’t feel no ways tired:”

Joe Biden’s apparent penchant for pandering to minority voters as a political tactic is insulting, and some of his remarks while campaigning in the South are “disgusting,” according to National Review Online’s Deroy Murdock.

On “Tucker Carlson Tonight,” the host played a clip of Biden’s latest campaign ad, which is running in South Carolina. The former Vice President appears to adopt a slight southern drawl and borrows a famous gospel lyric from the Rev. James Cleveland.

“We don’t feel no ways tired — We’ve come too far from where we started from. Nobody told us the road would be easy,” Biden says over a montage of images and video clips, before closing the ad by saying: “Let’s take back this country now.”

* * * * * * * *

Murdock focused on Biden’s comments and ones he has made in the past, saying that black voters will not receive the statements as the ex-vice president intends.

“I’m fascinated by this idea that when Democrats run to the south they have to adopt southern accents,” he said, adding that Hillary Clinton has done the same thing.

Murdock then recalled what he considered an especially “disgusting” comment by Biden when the then-vice president was stumping for President Obama’s reelection in 2012. At a speech in Danville, Va., Biden claimed to an audience that included many African-Americans that if Mitt Romney and the Republicans won the election, they would “put y’all back in chains” by loosening restrictions on financial institutions.

“It’s like outtakes from ‘Gone With the Wind’ — very odd, very inappropriate and very stupid,” said Murdock.

Indeed it is; and as Murdock alluded to above, Hillary didn’t feel no ways tired in 2007 either, as this classic Hot Air “Vent” clip from back then featuring Bryan Preston and Michelle Malkin reminds us:

REMEMBER WEBB HUBBELL? Capital Research Center’s Ken Braun reminds us that when it comes to presidents taking care of their own, Donald Trump is a piker compared to Bill Clinton. This is a particularly timely read, given the grim prospects facing Roger Stone.

CHANGE: Huge: More ‘better off’ under Trump than Clinton, Bush, and Obama.

Another day, another positive Gallup headline for President Trump.

Today’s delivered more economic good news for Trump, that people feel “better off” than they did when the past four presidents were up for reelection.

A record 61% said they are better off than they were three years ago when Trump beat Democrat Hillary Clinton in a shocking election.

“Six in 10 U.S. adults say they are better off than they were three years ago, more than reported this in prior presidential reelection years,” said Gallup.

What’s more, people give Trump much more credit for the improved economy than former President Barack Obama, whose supporters have been claiming credit. Some 26% give Obama a “great deal” of credit compared to Trump at 37%.

No wonder so many people hate him. The man is a monster.

KRUISER’S MORNING BRIEF: New Hampshire Berns Down. “One thing is certain: Elizabeth Warren will soon be flipping through Hillary Clinton’s Book of Blame for excuses to explain away her myriad weaknesses as a candidate. Sexism will of course be Number 1 on the list, sure to be followed by ‘Something, something Trump,’ and the inherent patriarchal oppression spread through Tom and Jerry cartoons.”

‘NOT UP TO US:’ New MSNBC Anchor Begs Colleagues Not to Whip Dem Votes.

During Sunday’s Meet the Press on NBC, newly hired MSNBC anchor Joshua Johnson (formerly with NPR) had a candid moment when he admitted the media took part in helping the DNC whip votes for Hillary Clinton in 2016, and implored his colleagues not to lobby for certain candidates in the 2020 Democratic primary.

Johnson’s truth bomb was dropped after moderator and NBC political director Chuck Todd lamented how each of the Democratic candidates had a “fatal flaw.” The first point Johnson sought to make was to recall how the Democratic National Committee threw their institutional bulk behind Clinton early in the process:

* * * * * * * * *

Going further, Johnson shifted to discussing what the media’s role was in 2016. “So, one of the things I’m interested in seeing in 2020 is, how much we will allow Democrats to make their own choice? The story of who the party is supposed to support is not up to us, it’s up to Democrats.” In the midst of saying that, he gestured to the people sitting around the table.

Todd, who often fights the losing battle of claiming there’s no such thing as media bias in favor of Democrats, didn’t seem pleased. He gave an annoyed sounding “yeah” to Johnson’s comments and a quick glimpse of his face seemed to confirm the tone.

Former and current Democratic Party operative with a byline Chuck Todd hates to be reminded that he is indeed a Democratic Party operative with a byline.

Flashback: Reporter: The head of NBC News’s political coverage tried to bully me out of a scoop — on behalf of the DNC. “Since when does the head of an allegedly independent news organization do a favor for a political party?” Early and often, if you’re NBC.

QUESTIONS NOBODY IS ASKING: Who Is Writing Brad Pitt’s Awards Season Speeches?

Fenway Strategies is a speechwriting and communications firm founded by former Obama administration officials Jon Favreau and Tommy Vietor. Although the firm’s most obvious connection is to the political arena, helping speakers prep TED talks or United Nations addresses, Fenway has branched out into Hollywood. And over the last few years the firm has helped ghostwrite awards acceptance speeches for a number of A-list clients; you definitely know them but their identities are protected by non-disclosure agreements.

To hear it from Fenway principal Sam Koppelman, a former speechwriter for Michael Bloomberg and digital strategist for Hillary Clinton who also co-authored the New York Times best seller Impeach: The Case Against Donald Trump, the practice is so widespread among movie, music, and TV stars nowadays, he finds it more astonishing to discover a nominee has eschewed professional speechwriting help than when one seeks it out.

“Writing for actors is a speechwriter’s dream come true,” says Koppelman. “Because unlike politicians, who are not professionals at memorizing lines or delivering them in compelling and charismatic ways, actors actually know how to deliver the lines.”

Why, it’s like Hollywood is the Democrat base or something.

OLD AND BUSTED: Clinton adviser says Democrats will dominate for 40 years.

The New Hotness? James Carville Drops a Truth Bomb on Dems: ‘We’re Losing Our Damn Minds.’

I want to give you an example of the problem here. A few weeks ago Binyamin Appelbaum, an economics writer for the New York Times, posted a snarky tweet about how LSU cancelled classes for the National Championship game. And then he said, do the “Warren/Sanders free public college proposals include LSU, or would it only apply to actual schools?”

You know how fucking patronizing that is to people in the South or in the middle of the country? First, LSU has an unusually high graduation rate, but that’s not the point. It’s the goddamn smugness. This is from a guy who lives in New York and serves on the Times editorial board and there’s not a single person he knows that doesn’t pat him on the back for that kind of tweet. He’s so fucking smart.

Appelbaum doesn’t speak for the Democratic Party, but he does represent the urbanist mindset. We can’t win the Senate by looking down at people. The Democratic Party has to drive a narrative that doesn’t give off vapors that we’re smarter than everyone or culturally arrogant.

Good luck with that. As Dr. Helen has written, that dopamine hit of smugness is what being a leftist is all about. QED, the exchange between the aforementioned Binyamin Appelbaum and Pete Buttigieg, which went viral on Twitter last month, after Appelbaum looked and sounded like he was auditioning to be the head of SPECTRE:

By the way:

JONATHAN TURLEY: Nancy Pelosi should resign.

What followed was an utter disgrace. First, Pelosi dropped the traditional greeting before the start of the address, “Members of Congress, I have the high privilege and distinct honor of presenting to you the president of the United States.” Instead, she simply announced, “Members of Congress, the president of the United States.” It was extremely petty and profoundly inappropriate. Putting aside the fact that this is not her tradition, but that of the House, it is no excuse to note that the president was impeached.

Such an indignity was not imposed on President Clinton during his own impeachment proceeding, and anyone respecting due process would note that Trump has been accused, not convicted, at this point in the constitutional process. Pelosi proceeded to repeatedly shake her head, mouth words to others, and visibly disagree with the address. It was like some distempered distracting performance art behind the president.

Pelosi, like her predecessors, is supposed to remain stone faced during the address even if the president leaves her personally enraged. Indeed, House speakers have been the authority who kept other members in silent deference and respect, if not to the president, then to the office. However, Pelosi appeared to goad the mob, like a high schooler making mad little faces behind the school principal at an assembly. It worked as members protested and interrupted Trump. Pelosi became another Democratic leader, little more than a twitching embodiment of this age of rage.

What a nasty woman, if you’ll allow me to borrow a famous phrase.

FLASHBACK: The Case for Rick Perry. “Despite cheer-leading from the likes of Kathryn Jean Lopez and Jennifer Rubin, Mitt Romney has always struck me as a phony without any real core convictions except that he should be in charge; sort of the Republican answer to Bill Clinton, without the charm or adultery. Pick an issue and Romney’s been on both sides of it at one time or another. He seems the most likely of all the major candidates to be praised by The New York Times and The Washington Post for ‘growing’ in office.”

Well, that last bit certainly turned out to be prophetic — and Romney didn’t even have to get elected president first. Although it helped that he sold out the current occupant of the Oval Office.

CHANGE: Record economic optimism under Trump, better than Reagan, Clinton, Obama.

JEFF DUNETZ: Grasping Trump’s Deal Of The Century: Why Is This Peace Plan Different From All Others?

Perhaps the most significant and most crucial part of the deal is the economic section, which is also different than previous peace plans. During the announcement, Trump spoke of the $50 billion given to the Palestinians. But it’s more than just dumping money. Previous efforts to provide aid has filled the P.A. leadership’s pockets and done little to help the Palestinian people. This particular plan is more than a money dump. Based on Palestinian acceptance, the U.S. and other nations will help the nascent Palestinian State create an economic infrastructure that will guarantee the jobs and businesses that the territories now lack. For example, there are proposals for creating a technology industry in the expanded Gaza area and a joint tourism effort between Israel and the Palestinians. This effort understands that peace can only come if the Palestinian citizens have jobs and can feed their families. or, as Bubba Clinton’s former campaign manager James Carville was famous for saying, “It’s the economy stupid!”

The Trump “Deal of the Century” has its supporters and detractors, each of whom has taken their positions for the same reason. It’s different from the Middle-East peace plans they have seen before. Will it result in peace? That depends on the Palestinians. Do they have the courage to try and make peace?

Shadow, a tech firm that describes itself as a group that creates “a permanent advantage for progressive campaigns and causes through technology,” is the company that created the Iowa Democratic Party’s app, according to The New York Times. At least the COO, CEO, CTO and a senior product manager at Shadow all worked for the Hillary Clinton presidential campaign, according to LinkedIn profiles.

Shadow is associated with ACRONYM, a nonprofit dedicated to “advancing progressive causes through innovative communications, advertising and organizing programs.” Early last year, ACRONYM announced that it was acquiring an SMS tool called Groundbase and, out of Groundbase, “launching Shadow, a company focused on building the technology infrastructure needed to enable Democrats to run better, more efficient campaigns.”

Groundbase co-founders Krista Davis, who is the current Shadow CTO, and Gerard Niemira, who is the current Shadow CEO, both held senior positions with the Clinton campaign.

Tara McGowan, the founder and CEO of ACRONYM, posted a statement from an ACRONYM spokesman early Tuesday morning distancing the nonprofit from Shadow, which is a for-profit company. . . . McGowan is an alumna of Barack Obama’s 2012 campaign and previously worked as a digital director for NexGen America, a progressive organization founded by presidential candidate Tom Steyer.

If it hadn’t been for her proximity to William Jefferson Clinton, a man who genuinely did have a genius for connecting with people and lit up every room he was in for many years, the idea of trying to win elected office never would have infected her mind. Podesta and Frank are tools, and we all know whose. I don’t actually like Bernie, and I think he’d be an awful president, but that doesn’t change the fact that he’s — once again — getting the shaft from the DNC at the behest of the Clintons.

THEIR CASE WOULD SEEM MORE PERSUASIVE IF THEY EVER TOLD THE TRUTH ABOUT ANYTHING: Byron York: Impeachment, Democrats, and those 90,000 documents.

For weeks, Democrats have been demanding to see new witnesses and documents for the Senate impeachment trial of President Trump. Mostly they have emphasized witnesses. But on Tuesday, the first full day of the trial, the Democratic House managers seemed to turn up the call for documents, claiming that President Bill Clinton provided tens of thousands of pages of documents for his impeachment trial in 1999.

“In the Clinton case, the president provided all of the documents — more than 90,000 pages of them — before the trial took place,” the managers said in a statement released Tuesday morning. “[Majority Leader Mitch] McConnell’s resolution rejects that basic necessity.”

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi backed up the managers. “For the Clinton trial, witnesses were deposed and the president provided more than 90,000 documents,” she said Tuesday.

“All of the documents in the Clinton trial were turned over prior to the trial,” said lead impeachment manager Rep. Adam Schiff when arguments before the Senate began. “All 90,000 pages of them, so they could be used in the House’s case.”

So a question: Where did the figure of 90,000 pages, or documents, come from? Did Clinton helpfully cooperate with the House Republicans who were trying to remove him from office 20 years ago?

It turns out Schiff, Pelosi, and their colleagues were not telling the whole story. They got the 90,000 figure, apparently, from Clinton’s rebuttal to the Starr report — the report independent counsel Kenneth Starr turned over to Congress on Sept. 9, 1998, after seven months of investigating the Monica Lewinsky affair. In that rebuttal, given to Congress on Sept. 11, Clinton’s lawyers wrote: “During the past four and a half years, the President has … produced more than 90,000 pages of documents and other items” to investigators.

But not to Congress. The Clinton situation was entirely different from the one Schiff and his fellow Democrats face today. Starr was an independent counsel with full law enforcement powers, and his office issued many grand jury subpoenas pushing Clinton, who often resisted fiercely, to turn over the 90,000 documents over the course of four and a half years, covering the Whitewater, Travelgate, Filegate, and Lewinsky investigations.

“If memory serves me correctly, I don’t think he voluntarily gave us anything,” said Sol Weisenberg, a former Starr prosecutor, in a conversation Tuesday.

With Trump, the House has been involved in a different process. Speaker Nancy Pelosi chose not to seek the appointment of a special counsel to investigate the Trump-Ukraine matter. (The old independent counsel law under which Starr was appointed expired years ago; a Trump-Ukraine special counsel investigation might have operated along the lines of the Robert Mueller Trump-Russia investigation.) Instead, House Democrats conducted a hurried investigation that did not involve a grand jury or engage in the type of fighting for documents that Starr did.

The whole thing is a politicized sham.

MEANWHILE, OVER AT VODKAPUNDIT: Debunking Trump’s Impeachment with One Simple Thought Experiment.

Let’s pretend that Joe Biden had a different name. No, better: Let’s pretend that Joe Biden had a different letter after his name. Let’s pretend he’s Joe Biden (R), former Vice President under George W. Bush.

In that case, what would the Democrats be doing differently? Literally everything.

Instead of impeaching Trump, they’d be praising him (although perhaps reluctantly) for his non-partisan willingness to look into Republican malfeasance. Adam Schiff would hold months worth of hearings, looking back into the Bush Administration in ways he’d never dare look back into Obama’s. The Democrat-controlled press would be 24/7 Biden! Biden! Biden! Jerry Nadler would have to go back to, I dunno, eating mayonnaise with an ice cream scoop.

FORMER BILL CLINTON ADVISOR MARK PENN: Democrats Need to End This Partisan Impeachment.

History, it seems, does repeat itself. George Washington’s farewell address about the excesses of partisanship was never truer than today. As America’s only truly independent president, Washington predicted that the growth of factionalism would undermine the execution of our laws and that the “alternate domination” of one party over another would lead to efforts to “exact revenge” and “raise false alarms.”

Let us not forget that the Trump administration suffered through a two-year special counsel investigation based almost entirely on opposition research from the other party, and that this imbroglio stems from the other party believing it had now in turn found information that would turn the political tables. It is all exactly as George Washington foretold.

HOWIE CARR: Trump’s Only Crime Is Being Trump.

Forget the two “counts” against President Trump in the Senate trial that begins today, the reality is he is charged with only one crime.

He is accused of being Donald J. Trump.

For that high crime, the Democrats say, he must be removed from office.

The Democrat “House managers” are going to get 24 hours over the next two days to lay out their opening arguments, but how are they going to fill that time, considering that they’re not even accusing him of committing any crimes?

Certainly no actual felonies — you know, Bill Clinton stuff like obstruction of justice, perjury and subornlng perjury.

They just accuse him of being … Donald J. Trump.

For that they need 24 hours?

How are Schiff, Nadler, et al., going to fill those hours? Are they going to talk about how he puts ketchup on steaks? And then orders two scoops of ice cream for dessert?

Considering all the airtime they have to fill, maybe the Democrats can include a Greatest Hits compilation of all the other fake-news fantasies they’ve entertained over the last three years for getting rid of Trump:

Jill Stein’s recount (before Hillary was accused of being a Russian asset), faithless electors, emoluments clause, the 25th Amendment, Hillary’s fake dossier, the Russian hoax, firing crooked James Comey, senile Bob Mueller and his 19 angry Democrats, Michael Cohen, Michael Avenatti (pre-indictments), Stormy Daniels, Brett Kavanaugh frame-up, tax returns, loans guaranteed by Russian oligarchs … .

And now, the Ukraine hoax.

What are the high crimes and misdemeanors committed by Trump? Record high numbers of Americans working, the stock market at record highs. Favorable trade deals, ISIS destroyed, millions off welfare and food stamps.

They never feared Trump failing. They feared his success, and that’s unforgivable.

ANALYSIS: TRUE. Bernie Sanders doesn’t want to win.

On Sunday, Sanders’s surrogates released a campaign memo accusing Joe Biden of ‘a big corruption problem’. The memo, published by Zephyr Teachout in the Guardian, flamed Biden for perfecting ‘the art of taking big contributions, then representing his corporate donors at the cost of middle- and working-class Americans’. Less than day later, Bernie himself personally apologized for the hurt caused to Biden, even as his rabid online base cheered the op-ed. ‘It is absolutely not my view that Joe is corrupt in any way. And I’m sorry that that op-ed appeared,’ Sanders told CBS News.

And then Tuesday, Gamma Clinton reared her defeated head once more to promote a HULU documentary. According to the Hollywood Reporter, she says in the documentary that Bernie ‘was in Congress for years. He had one senator support him. Nobody likes him, nobody wants to work with him, he got nothing done…it’s all just baloney and I feel so bad that people got sucked into it.’

Hillary gave Bernie yet another fresh opportunity to paint himself as the angry outsider, yet again fighting a corrupt and rigged primary process, and yet again contending with an establishment that wants nothing more than to see his campaign die a quick and silent death. Sound familiar?

If Bernie is afraid to mix it up with Joe Biden, how on earth can he position himself as beating Trump? And how can he placate the angriest elements of his base and campaign staff?

It is the story of their lifetimes, and the journalists are blowing it — bigly.

He offers himself as a tonic to the national morass, and an alternative to selecting another President Bush or Clinton.

That is a fantastic story. America replaced an affirmative action hire with a competent businessman. While our real-life Batman may have been born a millionaire, he worked to expand his fortune 1,000-fold — just like the Bruce Wayne of fiction.

How did the leading “conservative” periodical play it? “Witless Ape Rides Escalator” read the National Review headline. And media coverage after that was all downhill. The part of the country that still believes in the media is convinced that it is run by a bumbling Hitler who just got lucky on the economy and on avoiding World War 3 three or four times now.

The press isn’t interested in giving us the story. The press is interested in selling us a narrative.

JOEL KOTKIN: Why Democrats no longer talk about growth and what it means.

Until just a few years ago, the need for economic growth to sustain societies was almost universally acknowledged. This was not just gospel on the free-market Right. Whatever its failings, 20th century socialism was growth-oriented and espoused the notion, however poorly realized, that greater material progress was critical to expanding working-class wealth.

Now political leaders in France, Iceland, as well as the European Commission increasingly believe, along with influential economists such as Joseph Stiglitz, that growing the economic pie should be supplanted by such goals as better health care, less inequality, and fighting climate change.

Many, particularly on the environmental Left, go even further and advocate “de-growth,” essentially urging societies to consciously reduce their economic wealth. This agenda requires that energy, housing, food, and other consumption costs steadily increase, or be legally prohibited, so that ordinary people will be unable to eat meat regularly, use more energy, live in larger spaces, and travel freely. There’s even a quaint notion that we need to return to a more primitive state of existence, essentially cancelling out the progress of the last few centuries. America’s Green Party, for example, would seek to limit long-distance trade entirely in favor of a feudal economy that is “largely self-sufficient in the production of its necessities.”

Even in the United States, where growth has long been an unquestioned priority, virtually none of the leading Democratic candidates for President even mentions the word. Vice-President Joe Biden, the leading “moderate” in the Democratic party primaries, has explicitly stated that he would wipe out fossil fuel employment in the country to pursue a green agenda.

The American Left’s abandonment of economic growth marks a dramatic shift from the approach of Bill Clinton, or even Barack Obama. In the 1990s, progressives still believed that economic growth was indispensable for improving the lives of the middle- and working-class families. Now, rather than seek to outperform the somewhat more robust economy and modest uptick in blue collar jobs under President Trump, progressives focus mostly on identity issues, environmental piety, and income redistribution.

Fundamentally abandoning growth means the effective end of the old social democratic program. Many self-defined socialists—typically academics and media personalities rather than industrial union leaders—reject the fundamental Marxian emphasis on “materialism” in favor of low growth “sustainability.”

To be fair, that’s only because they hate the working class and want to destroy it, by transforming it into a dependent class of government handout recipients. They’ll turn us all into beggars ’cause they’re easier to please.

And the working class understands this: “It is no surprise that blue-collar workers, traditional a constituency of the Left, are deserting progressive parties for the likes of Donald Trump, and most recently, Boris Johnson. As socialist author Leigh Phillips has observed, the scarcity politics of the greens represents a form of class warfare. . . . Without economic growth, and the opportunity for people to rise up the class ladder, we will devolve, as Tocqueville warned, towards a class structure more favorable to ‘aristocracy’ and authoritarian rule.”

To wannabe aristocrats and authoritarians, that’s not a bug, it’s a feature.

So, McConnell has steadfastly argued for the same rules package that passed the Senate 100-0 in the Clinton iteration. “What’s good for the goose is good for the gander” makes a pretty sensible argument.

NORTHWESTERN UNIV. LAWPROF STEPHEN PRESSER: McConnell Channels Hamilton to Save the Republic.

The Framers’ greatest fear was that the delicate balance of powers among the three branches would be upset, and that a corrupt faction would come to dominate the government. McConnell made clear his belief this had come to be the Democrats whom he said were “the intemperate or designing majority in the House of Representatives,” that Hamilton “warned might abuse the impeachment power” for partisan gain.

McConnell decried the misguided nature of the Democrats’ hypocritical claim that some Senators, who, like McConnell himself, had clearly indicated their belief in the insubstantial nature of the impeachment charges, could not participate in a fair trial.

McConnell pointed out that Hamilton, in “Federalist 65,” had said that impeachment was not simply a legal proceeding, but was a political one as well, calling for judgements, McConnell said, “about what the common good of our nation requires.”

In a blistering indictment of the Democrats — who certainly did not shed their political partisanship in the trial of President Clinton on impeachment charges 20 years earlier— McConnell declared that senators did not need “condescending lectures on fairness from the House Democrats who just rushed through the most unfair impeachment in modern history . . . or lectures on impartiality from senators who happily pre-judged the case with President Clinton and simply change their standards to suit the political winds.”

Once the United States Senate was regarded as the greatest parliamentary body on the planet, and one could sense an echo of that time, when McConnell trumpeted that “The Framers built the Senate to provide a check against the short-termism, the runaway passions, and the ‘demon of faction’ that Hamilton warned would ‘extend his sceptre’ over the House of Representatives ‘at certain seasons.'”

The Senate exists, explained McConnell, “because the Founders wanted an institution that could stop momentary hysterias and partisan passions from damaging our Republic.”

And we need just that, now.

BRUCE BAWER: What Happened to Howard Stern?

Listening to this balderdash, you’d have thought that Clinton had led a saintly life, that she had been constantly set upon by jealous, corrupt inferiors, and that her career had been a spotless series of legislative and diplomatic triumphs. Buying into the notion of Hillary as a lifelong victim of the patriarchy, Stern seemed to be out to make up, in one interview, for every time he’d ever gotten a stripper to remove her top. One illuminating moment came when Stern praised Howard Zinn, the Communist author of A People’s History of the United States, a shoddy work of propaganda that has, alas, become a perennial best-seller and college text. Every Stern fan knows that Howard’s not big on books, so if he’s actually read Zinn’s opus, it’s likely his chief source of information on American history—a scary thought.

It was a stunning listening experience. When Hillary blamed James Comey (along with “the Russians and Wikileaks”) for her election loss, Stern went along with her, even though Comey had done Hillary a service by choosing not to prosecute her for clear violations of the Espionage Act. When she mentioned her emails, Stern didn’t bring up her private server or her destruction of the emails with BleachBit but instead agreed readily with her baffling claim that the emails had been “misinterpret[ed]”; when she criticized Trump’s “trade battles” and tax breaks, said that Trump was in Putin’s “camp,” and accused Trump fans (and not Antifa) of committing acts of violence around the country—and when she even knocked the booming Trump economy—Stern nodded along. He made no mention of Fusion GPS, the Clinton Foundation, her contorted version of the Benghazi episode, her dubious story about coming under fire in Bosnia, or anything else remotely scandalous in her (or her husband’s) past. Both Hillary and Stern took Joe Biden’s side in the Ukraine controversy and agreed that Trump’s famous phone call with the Ukrainian president had amounted to an “abuse of power.”

The entire interview was a case of kowtowing on an epic scale. Howard Stern, who rose to fame, in considerable part, by zapping fraudulent politicians, had now given one of the most sycophantic interviews of all time to a woman regarded by many as the most duplicitous pol of our era. It was a terrible comedown for a guy who’d earned a reputation for fearless honesty.
