After almost total silence for twenty four hours after this incident happened, things began heating up today. After our former PJ Media colleague finally released her side of the story, an extremely odd explanation was provided in this post at The Daily Beast:
The statement was issued in the wee hours of Wednesday morning but remains Breitbart’s official comment on the matter, hours after sources said Lewandowski acknowledged to Breitbart’s Washington political editor, Matthew Boyle, that he did manhandle Fields.
Lewandowski’s explanation to Boyle, said these sources, was that he and Fields had never met before and that he didn’t recognize her as a Breitbart reporter, instead mistaking her for an adversarial member of the mainstream media. Trump’s press secretary, Hope Hicks, didn’t respond to an email seeking comment. Nor did the usually responsive Boyle.
Remember, Boyle is a full gills-breathing, in-the-tank defender of all things Trump. If he were being misquoted here, he more than likely would have responded almost immediately on social media, as he usually does.
Forty-eight hours or so after the incident, Lewandowski shifted from “didn’t recognize” to “never met”:
@MichelleFields you are totally delusional. I never touched you. As a matter of fact, I have never even met you.
— Corey Lewandowski (@CLewandowski_) March 11, 2016
This was more than likely a prime directive from his boss, as they seem to have been coordinating messages at the time. I have known Michelle Fields for a few years, and worked with her quite a bit. I’ve also watched this petting zoo on hallucinogens that people call the Trump campaign leaving its messes and stench everywhere since last summer. Without hesitation, I can tell you that it is far more likely that Lewandowski is the veracity challenged party here. Michelle is willing to back up her side of it as best she can:
I don’t know what your definition of “great” is, but if Donald Trump and his ilk are the ones you think will make America more of it again, I’m willing to buy you a better dictionary.
Editor’s note: Michelle Fields is a former employee of PJTV.
