Were Chris Lane's Teenage Killers Really 'Bored'? (Warning: Strong Language)
Three teens have been accused as the killers of Australian baseball player Chris Lane. Lane, who was living in Duncan, Oklahoma, on a baseball scholarship, was gunned down Friday afternoon in a drive-by shooting. One of the three has reportedly confessed to the random murder.
The Oklahoma teens who face first-degree murder charges have been named as Chancey Luna, James Edwards and Michael Jones.
But their parents yesterday protested their innocence.
Jennifer Luna, whose son is suspected of firing the fatal shot, claimed her son was at home saying: "My son is not that way. My son is a good kid."
The three teens now say that they killed Lane at random because they were "bored."
It comes as Duncan Police Chief Danny Ford said he had secured the confession of the 17-year-old who summoned investigators to his jail cell and claimed he and the younger boys were bored "so they decided to kill somebody".
"He said he was the driver of the car," Chief Ford said.
"They saw Christopher jog by the house they were at, they chose him to be the target, they got in the car, drove up behind him and shot him in the back.
"He said the 16-year-old fired the shot."
The 16 year old would be Chancey Luna, who still has the endorsement of his mom, above.
The 15 year old is James Edwards. On August 15, a day before the shooting, the "bored" teen apparently posted a terse status update on Facebook, where he goes by the name "Lilbuggy" but his Facebook address is "blackcoon44."
He also posted this ambiguous update, which could be taken to mean shots or music recordings. Evidently the latter.
The statistics on the page place this James Edwards in Duncan, OK.
According to other posts on the page, Edwards is an aspiring rapper.
And he's not a fan of "snitches."
Ever the optimist, Durk was able to find some silver lining surrounding his circumstance. "By me going to jail, that was publicity, too. It was all in newspapers. So at the same time, it never kinda stopped."
So were these kids in Duncan really bored when they killed Chris Lane, or were they building their resumes, using criminals like Lil Durk as their template?
That's a Chief Keef lyric, as is the previous Facebook update. They're from the same song, "I Don't Like." Edwards also posted on Facebook about a puppy that he got, which he named Sosa. That's also from the same Chief Keef rap.
Sosa bitch, yeah, I done gon' hype
Pistol toting and I'm shooting on sight
A snitch nigga, that's that shit I don't like
Your bitch want do the team bet she won't fight
Bitch, we GBE -- fuck who don't like
And we ain't gon' fight, our guns gon' fight
On August 9th, Edwards changed his Facebook profile picture to this.
Google "blue bandana gang" and you'll get thousands of hits. Light blue bandanas are typically associated with the Crips gang and its offshoots. The Crips are active in Oklahoma -- four Crips were indicted on drug trafficking charges in Tulsa in June of this year.
Many are already blaming the gun that the teens allegedly used to kill Chris Lane, including members of the Australian government. Guns are inanimate objects.
The "gun culture" didn't kill Chris Lane, but the rap and gang culture may have played a prominent role.
The victim, Chris Lane, was white. Race may also have been a factor.
