Surprise Pick to Head World Bank: It's Not Hillary
President Obama has just nominated Dr. Jim Yong Kim, a physician and president of Dartmouth College, to be president of the World Bank.
The choice ends speculation that Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, who is known to be wanting to leave her current post, would be tipped for the job. Reuters reported last summer that Clinton was in talks to lead the organization, which Clinton's camp denied.
“Jim has spent more than two decades working to improve conditions in developing countries around the world,” Obama said in a statement announcing the surprise pick. “The World Bank is one of the most powerful tools we have to reduce poverty and raise standards of living around the globe, and Jim’s personal experience and years of service make him an ideal candidate for this job.”
Kim was director of the World Health Organization’s Department of HIV/AIDS and was once on TIME magazine's “100 Most Influential People in the World."
In 2007, Kim gave $5,000 to the America Works PAC, which was founded by Sen. Sherrod Brown (D-Ohio) in 1997 to elect liberals to the Senate and House.
Kim was born in Seoul, South Korea, and came to the U.S. at age 5. Tonight, Obama flies to Seoul for the Nuclear Security Summit and various bilateral talks.
