Patriotic Hispanics Missed a Golden Opportunity During the DREAM Act Debate
These hardcore socialists are left-overs from the motherland, so to speak. In the finest tradition of Chavez or Castro, they play the willing media like a violin and claim to speak for all Hispanics, legal or illegal. Patriotic Latinos could have fought these left-wing sellouts and used the DREAM Act to shine the light and chart a path to fixing our legal immigration system. We could have stood with common-sense politicians by insisting on the creation of an immigration system that uses our technology with goals toward making foreign-born immigrants contributors to our great nation. We could have cut through the noise put out by the race-baiters on the left and insisted on a solution that focused on assimilation into our great American culture. We could have insisted on minimum requirements for legal immigrants to enroll in an English program, recognizing that it would be vital to any new citizen to understand the political debates that chart the course for the new country that they strive to make their own. We could have wrested control of information from the loud-mouthed leftists in the Hispanic community who have, for too long, used the language barrier to spread disinformation about conservatives. We were and are uniquely qualified to tell Latinos that English and America are not racist. But we didn’t.
The words “comprehensive immigration reform” have become code for amnesty. We have the aforementioned politicians to thank for that. It’s a shame too, because a comprehensive conservative approach is what’s needed to stop mass illegal immigration. I’ve always favored a three-pronged approach to solve illegal immigration. First, secure the border. The left screams about how that term is never defined. Well, let me take the mystery out of it. America takes steps to stop all illegal activity at the border ... period. The southern border is the hot spot. Cartels are taking over. In fact, the Obama administration has ceded control over a vast area of Arizona. Mr. Obama refuses to provide protection for Americans there, so he sends signs. These signs warn of dangers from human and drug smuggling cartels in the area. They tell Americans to stay out. Getting pushed around from real leaders like Angela Merkel and Vladimir Putin is one thing. But it seems our man-child president can’t find the stomach to even stand up against drug cartels who are killing the people he swore to protect.
We have waves of illegal immigrants coming over our southern border. And we have illegal immigration on our northern border. We need to hire more agents to shore up the border with Canada. The National Guard ought to be mobilized and sent to the southern border, fully armed with one mission: nothing comes through the border unless it is screened at the ports of entry! They would be free to engage any hostile drug cartel members. These cartels have killed Americans. We ought to show them the same consideration. Recognizing that these guardsmen can’t remain deployed forever, work must begin right away on physical barriers, virtual fences, and a tactical flight pattern mapped out for fully armed predator drones. Step one sends the unmistakable message around the world: Illegal entry into the United States will no longer be permitted. You can try, but do so at your own risk. Once the border is secured, the leadership of both political parties and the president must certify it.
Step two: Congress puts in place reform to our legal immigration system as outlined above. One more thing on this: Because liberals and their thugs in union leadership have driven jobs out of our country, we have a labor shortage in the United States. Even if the unions caught religion tomorrow and decided it was important for their workers to actually work and stopped emphasizing securing dues to exert political influence, we’d still need competitive labor. Legal immigration reform ought to recognize that.
Step three: make it impossible to work in the U.S. unless you’re legal. Last I researched, the Social Security Administration had targeted nine million Social Security numbers that had abnormalities (i.e., the person was dead and still earning a paycheck). So we already know who they are and where they are in many cases. Businesses must be made to understand that they can no longer hire individuals who are not legal residents in the United States. E-Verify or another system created from scratch must give businesses the tools to quickly and inexpensively check the legal status of their workers. Violators will pay a heavy financial cost. No mass deportation is needed. When folks can’t work, they will either go home or set out on a path to get right with the law. The freedom to choose is a hallmark of our great land after all. While all this is going on, Congress and the nation would begin to deal with the catastrophe created by forty years of neglect and abuse of our immigration laws. It is at this time that we’d begin to discuss ways of getting twenty million or so illegals out of the shadows. The DREAM Act would pass with overwhelming support because the American people would once again have faith that the government isn’t just trying to pull a fast one. Unfortunately, this will not happen anytime soon. Patriotic Hispanics allowed themselves to be duped into spinning their wheels once again.
The idea of the DREAM Act is good. But it’s analogous to trying to feed a person more food because they’ve lost weight. The problem is they lost weight because they have cancer. Illegal immigration is a cancer. And it needs to be treated if not cut out of the American body all together. It will take right-minded patriotic Hispanic Americans to stand up and allow that truth to be told. Let the MSM and the frantic left-wing Latinos tell us that we’re motivated by race hatred. They couldn’t do it. Even the blowhards at MSNBC would have a hard time convincing their America-hating audience that our arguments should be dismissed out of hand because we’re just a bunch of right-wing hate-mongers. With us, they’d have to debate the merits of our solutions to the problem. And I think it’s an intellectual argument we can win. Because at the end of the day all the loud-mouthed leftists have is an open border policy, with a no holds barred importation of the world’s poor into America. All they have is a plea to make all of these illegals legal by legislative fiat. After that the illegals would be signed up in the ranks of the Democratic unions, of course. At the end of the day, all the socialist wannabes have is an argument that most Americans will see is bad for the country. I just hope the conservative Hispanic patriots, about whom I speak, recognize the trap they’ve just fallen into and will avoid it the next time around. If they do, America will be the better for it.
