Obama: Hey, It' Not Like I'm Gonna Force Churches Into the Gay Marriage Business
President Obama, in his statement hailing the Supreme Court’s decision to overturn the Defense of Marriage Act, promised that he wouldn’t try to force religious institutions to conduct gay marriages.
“On an issue as sensitive as this, knowing that Americans hold a wide range of views based on deeply held beliefs, maintaining our nation’s commitment to religious freedom is also vital,” Obama said. “How religious institutions define and consecrate marriage has always been up to those institutions. Nothing about this decision — which applies only to civil marriages — changes that.”
Here’s guessing that the Roman Catholics and other religious groups that are in the midst of fighting the contraception mandate are skeptical of that pledge.
The reality is, and Obama knows, he won't have to publicly move to force churches into anything. Our litigious society guarantees that someone will sue to force churches into gay marriage, and our activist judiciary guarantees that they will get the outcome they desire somewhere. It's going to happen. And Obama and/or his allies will be supporting the lawsuits when they come, tweeting that they're accomplishing "something special."
And another thing: This will be used to further divide the church. Some churches won't have any problem with marrying gays, or they'll recognize the financial windfall, and go along with it. Some already do, in fact. It's the traditional churches who will oppose it and therefore will be targeted for destruction.
