Middle School Principal Cancels Honors Program
We can't have a culture in which success is honored, now, can we? It wouldn't be nice.
David Fabrizio, principal of Ipswich Middle School (near Boston, of course), notified parents of his plan to eliminate the school's Honors Night last week.
"The Honors Night, which can be a great sense of pride for the recipients' families, can also be devastating to a child who has worked extremely hard in a difficult class but who, despite growth, has not been able to maintain a high grade point average," Fabrizio penned in his first letter to parents.
Fabrizio also said he decided to make the change because academic success can be influenced by the amount of support a student receives at home and not all students receive the same level of emotional and academic support at home.
Fabrizio now says he'll honor kids at the end of the year in one big assembly and it was never his intention to do anything otherwise. Which is a lie, and should not pass unnoticed.
I think he just didn't go far enough. We can't live with the possibility that someone somewhere might at some point find something devastating. He should cancel all sports, since success in sports can be influenced by diet and genes and by how maniacal some parents get by trying to live out their glory years through their kids. It's just not fair that some kids can run faster and jump higher than others. It's just not fair that some kids will study hard to get good grads and some kids don't have to, and some kids are just lazy or lousy at academics. It's Just. Not. Fair. for a school to single anyone out for anything, ever.
In fact, he should just cancel everything, give everyone an A+ and a trophy in every single sport and send them all home. It could potentially be devastating if he doesn't.
I do feel compelled to ask a question: When did we turn our schools over to dishonest morons? When did this happen?
