Wednesday's HOT MIC

Here is today's Hot Mic.

My meme of the day.

From the comments:

Hey PJ.... !!!! Tell Roger Simon to start a campaign to pull ALL of Harvey Weinstein's Oscars. Ask Jim Thorpe or Lance Armstrong if your name can be erased. Thorpe was cheated by folks that had no regard for his great achievements, but Armstrong was like HW..." everyone knew everyone cheats" if Lance can lose his standing so can Harvey.

Well, Roger?

So, yeah -- the congresswoman who says Trump told the mother of a fallen soldier that "he knew what he signed up for" is a Democrat and a Trump hater and wears the weirdest looking cowboy hat I ever saw. And Trump pushed back strongly, claiming he never said it.

So what does the mother say?

The Hill:

The mother of Sgt. La David Johnson, who was killed in an ambush in Niger earlier this month, said President Trump did disrespect her family, despite Trump's insistence that remarks about a phone conversation he had with Johnson's widow were "fabricated."

"President Trump did disrespect my son and my daughter and also me and my husband," Johnson's mother, Cowanda Jones-Johnson, told The Washington Post.

Her comments come after Rep. Frederica Wilson (D-Fla.) said Tuesday she overheard Trump tell Johnson's widow that the fallen soldier "knew what he signed up for ... but when it happens it hurts anyway."

"Disrespecting" the family could mean a lot of things. I wish the mother had been more specific.

But don't you find it curious that in every media report about this incident, Trump's phrase "but when it happens it hurts anyway" always seems to be accidentally left out? That phrase gives the first part of the statement an entirely different spin.

What Trump inartfully was trying to say was that "your son died doing something he loved doing, but it still hurts." There is nothing wrong with that at all, and given that we have a professional Army, it is a very high compliment for a president to give.

It could very well be that a grieving mother may have initially taken Trump's words in the spirit they were given but, once the congresswoman opened her mouth, felt obliged to say that the president was "disrespecting" her family.

The bottom line is, as much as it hurts this anti-Trumper to say it, Trump could have said it better, but was on solid ground in making that statement.
