Monday's HOT MIC
Liz, I agree it's good news that the royals are going to have another child. They seem like nice enough people -- for a couple who would be blessedly anonymous save for who his mother is.
I can understand the fascination with the royal family. I get it. But to my mind, it is unseemly for citizens of a republic to pay them much attention. Many thousands of Americans died to ensure that their descendants didn't have to pay them any attention. I wouldn't go so far as to say we dishonor their memory by putting the royal family above any other family, but their ghosts are surely disapproving.
I realize they serve more as celebrities than anything else, so perhaps if we view them the same way we look at Hollywood actors, that would be acceptable. But the cult of Diana is alive and well. Witness the numerous programs last week on her life and death. I just don't understand it.
She was a rich girl born into another family whose only claim to fame was an aristocratic bloodline and she married a miserable excuse for a man. She did good works rather than jet around the world to the playgrounds of the rich, but how much of that was to keep the British people from stripping the Windsors of their privileged position?
Royalty is an anachronism in the 21st century (it was an anachronism in the 20th), and an anathema to free peoples.
