• Drained the Aral Sea into near-nothingness
• Poisoned Lake Baikal, home to more than one-fifth of the world's fresh surface water (and Putin's Russia is making it worse)
• The rivers of the former USSR "are open sewers of human and chemical waste"
• Soviet nuclear weapons production resulted in "astronomically high radioactive pollution of towns, farm land, rivers, and lakes"
• Years of "irresponsible Soviet nuclear testing and dumping" turned the once-pristine Kola Peninsula into an environmental hellscape.
And who could forget Chernobyl?
I could go on, but instead here's a photoessay of Soviet environmental catastrophe.
Never forget: Communists poison everything.
Florida... Bunny?... strikes again.
YOUR PJM LIVE BLOG OPEN THREAD
It's only a day old, and already "Easter worshippers" is losing its cachet. I'm taking suggestions for new Dem-friendly euphemisms for Christian victims of Islamic terror -- plus your usual hot takes, cool links, and small talk.
Have at it!
Also, subsidies and/or below-market lending rates have a distorting effect on the market for student loans. Making money so cheap encourages students taking on bigger debts, which entices colleges into competing on who can provide the most expensive services -- have you seen today's fancy hotel-suite dorm rooms? -- rather than on who can provide the most affordable education.
Nothing makes anything more unaffordable than government attempts at making things more affordable.
There never was much there there, and even that was less than it seemed.
I'm no Mueller fan, but this kind of behavior is just unhinged -- and increasingly Standard Operating Procedure for our leftist friends.
Let the man worship in peace.
A mouse and bedbug infestation at the Department of Labor's headquarters puts federal workers' health at risk, according to internal test documents obtained by POLITICO.
The levels of mouse allergen — airborne particles of dried rodent urine — are nearly 70 times what would be considered a “moderate“ exposure amount. As a result, workers with respiratory complications face a high risk of an acute asthmatic attack, according to the documents.
The department also discovered bedbugs in building last week, and is in the process of exterminating them.
And super awkward:
The agency’s website includes a fact sheet about viruses carried by mice that reminds workers workers that they have a right to "file a complaint asking OSHA to inspect their workplace if they believe there is a serious hazard or that their employer is not following OSHA's rules."
The Occupational Safety and Health Administration is a unit of the Labor Department. It is located inside DOL's headquarters, which is named for former Labor Secretary Frances Perkins.
Politico (of course) blames Trump:
Problems with the Perkins Building, a Brutalist structure that opened on Capitol Hill in 1975, are not new. In 2017 the General Services Administration noted that the building was “outdated and inefficient“ and in need of "costly repairs." GSA recommended that the agency relocate elsewhere and identified three possible sites for a new headquarters.
But the Trump administration balked at the relocation's cost, and scrapped the project, even as it acknowledged that the building would require upgrades to its "heating, electrical, plumbing and elevator systems."
Keep your bedbugs to yourself, people.
Herman Cain withdraws from Fed nomination.
Trump has nothing but praise for the former 2012 Republican presidential candidate.
On a personal note, I was in the audience when Herman Cain spoke at Hillsdale College in late 2011, right after the sexual assault allegations had become public. He was very popular at Hillsdale, but I wondered if he would address the allegations and he did not. He would later withdraw from the race.
On Wednesday, Del Hall's first meal of the day is a yuzu ginger sour.
More than 40 days into his beer-only Lenten fast, Hall says his palate is incredible. The Pleasant Ridge man describes the yuzu, a citrus popular in Asia, as delicate and the first sip of the beer is tart and bright.
The beer, called Twelfth & Central, is a 50 West Brewing Company collaboration with Zundo Ramen and Donburi.
"I feel like I'm in my 20s," the 43-year-old Army veteran said.
After 40 days, Hall said:
- He needs less sleep
- His mind is clear
- He said he feels like there's no inflammation in his body
He also lost 40 pounds. There might be something to this...
