Here is your live blog for the day.

Attacked and powerless, Venezuela soldiers choose desertion.

There's a famous bit of dialog from Hemingway's The Sun Also Rises.

"How did you go bankrupt?"

"Two ways. Gradually, then suddenly."

We learned in the late '80s that that's also how socialist dictatorships collapse. The Soviet Union went from the preeminent geopolitical fact of Eurasia, to shorn of its Warsaw Pact empire, to the dustbin of history so quickly that most people have forgotten -- or have never been taught -- what a mighty and righteous struggle it was to make that happen.

And now here comes the endgame of Chavismo in Venezuela.

The defections come as the Venezuelan opposition puts pressure on the military to recognize congress leader Juan Guaido as the nation’s rightful president. Venezuela’s military has served as the traditional arbiter of political disputes, forcing out dictator Marcos Perez Jimenez in 1958. But the top military brass has stood fast with Maduro, who has shown no sign that he intends to relinquish power.

While Guaido has proposed amnesty to military officers who back him, the low-ranking soldiers who have defected say breaking ranks with Maduro is all but impossible.

That's how it feels today, but for how much longer will that be true, now that Maduro must resort to threats (rather than bribes) to keep the military in line?

Move over Virginia Democrats, Maryland Democrats are looking to take some heat off you.

A Maryland lawmaker who witnesses say used a racial slur to describe a legislative district in Prince George’s County has been stripped of her leadership position and will undergo sensitivity training, the House Speaker’s office announced on Tuesday.

Del. Mary Ann Lisanti (D-Harford) issued a public apology Tuesday afternoon, after apologizing to the executive committee of the Legislative Black Caucus of Maryland on Monday night and to the House Democratic Caucus on Tuesday morning.

“I deeply apologize . . . for my word choice several weeks ago,” Lisanti, 51, said in a statement. “I am sickened that a word that is not in my vocabulary came out of my mouth. It does not represent my belief system, my life’s work or what is my heart.”

While speaking to black caucus leaders, Lisanti said she did not recall using the racial slur in an after-hours conversation with other lawmakers, according to Del. Darryl Barnes (D-Prince George’s), who chairs the caucus.

It's a fair question.

Oye, the brave new world of posthumous reproduction...

Over the past two decades, posthumous reproduction has occurred throughout the world in modest but growing numbers. In this version of assisted reproduction, men donate their genetic material in life, or have it extracted after death, so that they may continue their genetic lineage. Experts predict that the number of these procedures is likely to increase as reproductive technology gains prevalence and as “alternative families,” composed of combinations beyond the traditional heterosexual, two-parent setup gradually gain acceptance. Israel, an exceptionally pro-natalist country with the highest usage of IVF per capita, is a thriving laboratory for this novel way of family-making.

This story goes on to tell the story of a woman's journey to use a deceased man's sperm to impregnate herself. I have to say, I'm not sure what I think about this yet.

How full of herself is "boss-woman" Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez? She's now trolling senior members of the U.S. Senate, and making a complete ass of herself in the process.

ICYMI, Senator John Cornyn (R-TX) quoted Italian fascist dictator Benito Mussolini in a tweet Sunday, as an admonition to Democrats. The senator's tweet was instantly set upon by a disturbingly large number of dim bulb Democrats who thought the moderate Republican was actually quoting the fascist dictator approvingly.

Then AOC chimed in with an idiotic tweet of her own.

Cornyn responded to her tweet this morning:

"Maybe one of the most uninformed opinions I have seen in ... hours," he quipped:

With virtually every tweet and every media appearance she makes, AOC keeps demonstrating that she is way out of her depth.

Maybe this is an attempt to make over-hopped IPAs seem less unattractive.

Another Facebook purge appears to be underway:

Kassam is a British political activist and former chief adviser to former UK Independence Party leader Nigel Farage.

After Trump Jr's tweet, Kassam's Facebook page was restored.

Meh. This is all for Russian domestic consumption. Putin needs a big bad to oppose, and of course it's the U.S.

This is a problem:

Via The Hill:

Colorado Gov. Jared Polis (D) will sign a measure to award his state’s electoral votes to the winner of the national popular vote, moving a countrywide coalition one step closer to circumventing the Electoral College.

In an interview Sunday, Polis called the Electoral College an “undemocratic relic” of the nation’s past, one he wants to see relegated to the dustbin of history.

“I’ve long supported electing the president by who gets the most votes,” Polis told The Hill. “It’s a way to move towards direct election of the president.”

At their protests lefties love to chant, "This is what democracy looks like!"

But this is not what democracy looks like. Democracy does not negate its citizens' votes. This is what tyranny looks like. Great job, Colorado.
