Great News: Sen. Kirk on Target to be Back on Hill by January
Looks like Sen. Mark Kirk (R-Ill.) is on target to achieve his goal of walking up the Capitol steps and returning to the upper chamber.
Kirk, who suffered a stroke in January, climbed 37 flights of stairs in Chicago's Willis Tower over the weekend for a charity event. With his left leg in a brace, he used the handrail for support as his physical therapist observed. Kirk's mom greeted him at the top with a hug.
Kirk told NBC Chicago that he plans on coming back for the 113th Congress in January.
Until then, the senator will continue his physical and speech therapy, and working from his Illinois office.
“I hope this gives a message to people across Illinois that may face stroke,” Kirk said during his first post-stroke interview.
The senator has documented his grueling road to recovery with a series of videos keeping constituents apprised of his progress.
“I want to thank the people of Illinois for their patience with this patient,” Kirk said in August.
