Border Control: The Issue That Won't Go Away
Despite almost no conversation about it whatsoever in the presidential campaign, it would seem that a majority of Americans still think we need to get our house in order when it comes controlling the US/Mexico border.
Most voters continue as they have for years to put border control ahead of legalizing the illegal immigrants already in this country.
A new Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey finds that 56% of Likely U.S. Voters think gaining control of the border is more important than legalizing the status of undocumented workers already living here. Thirty-five percent (35%) put legalizing the status of undocumented workers first.
There has been a backwards focus on this from both parties for what seems like an eternity, with the need to deal with the people who are already here as the first priority. However, as with a hemorrhaging wound, the bleeding needs to be stopped immediately before the rest of the problem can be attended to with any hope of success. Instead, identity politics is driving the debate. Democrats want to create a new constituency overnight and Republicans are too timid to talk about border control first out of fear of being called insensitive.
