BBC Refuses to Recognize Jerusalem as Capital of Israel on Olympic Site

The BBC has refused to name a capital for Israel on its Olympic Games site.

Whereas, for example, Iran's country page lists "Capital: Tehran," the Israel page lists no capital but "Seat of government: Jerusalem, though most foreign embassies are in Tel Aviv."

The page for "Palestine," meanwhile, says instead of capital "Intended seat of government: East Jerusalem. Ramallah serves as administrative capital."

Tweeted Sen. Mark Kirk (R-Ill.): "Fact: #Jerusalem is the capital of #Israel. Disappointed @BBCNews refuses to recognize this on its Olympic site"

At the request of Israel, the International Olympic Committee -- which has held fast on its denial of a minute of silence to recognize the Munich 11 -- contacted the BBC to ask that the website be corrected to list Jerusalem as the capital.

The BBC pages originally just listed Jerusalem as belonging to Palestine. Saying that "an error was made when the data was uploaded," the Beeb then changed it to its current "seat of government" listing.
