No decent revolution worthy of the name can survive without a designated live-blogger. Every passing moment must be immortalized!
Who are we in solidarity with? “The global movement of the people,” of course.
And what should we end? “Corporate Clownery,” as if we needed reminding.
Oh, yeah, and also “Corporate Personhood,” too. Forgot about that. It’s our “one single demand” and we won’t leave until it is met!
Could this be due to the fact that most corporations are inactive and make no profit and are little more than some dude who filed the $75 registration fee in Delaware for an idea that never got off the ground?
“Capitalism is Over — if you want it.” But how can I start a revolution without my Vibram FiveFingers shoes for the low low price of $99.95?
And always remember: “If you are not outraged, you are not paying attention.”
To which I might add: If you still haven’t noticed that America is being occupied by swarms of anti-capitalist revolutionaries, you are really not paying attention!

L.A. is up near Santa Barbara, Portland is in Grant’s Pass, Chicago’s next to Cairo, San Francisco’s in Stockton, Miami is inland, Cleveland’s next to Columbus, Kansas City’s adjacent to Joplin…wow.

The “Kansas City” marker is actually close to Springfield, MO. No news of an occupation here in Springfield. . .
This has more to do with some of the behind-the-scenes planning (watch for the exclusive extra footage on their new DVD release) than economics. The original plan for these protests was to inspire youth, so they set out a map of the U.S. and gave a 3-year-old a stamp in the shape of a chicken foot to determine their protest locations. The larger counterparts to the stamped locations were finally chosen because the group didn’t think they could find enough elitist, over-literate, under-thinking teens to fill their ranks in the lesser-known suburbs.

This time the nypd stopped them on the bridge and started arresting people, almost 80 peaceful people demonstrating their right as american citizens. This is bigger than you think. The people will not stay this peaceful for long. We are on the verge of civil disobedience and with any luck a reform of the PUBLIC sector. This is what the public wants. History will tell you what makes a revolution happen, and if you think we are far from it. just don’t underestimate the people who need to be heard

Its also strange that the thing that seems to motivate them most is the fact that some people have more than other folks, in other words envy, the whole while they bitch and moan about others greed. Isnt envy the desire the have what another already possesses, that is greed by another name.
If you want to see one of these peoples heads spin, ask them to define greed, then when they say “wanting more than you need” ask them what that limit is and who gets to set it.
Dunno, I grew up knowing some people with large sums of money. Friend of ours married a rich hedge funder. Ex’s father was CEO of an ibank. Worked with traders who made millions in a year. Some very nice people, some not so much.
It’s not really envy, because these people aren’t immune from their own troubles. Many pay large amounts of alimony, some have screwed over their families to pursue wealth. They have different problems, “the help”, or trying to raise kids that don’t end up spoiled brats.
The inequality bit is important to most of us, but like you said, who should provide limits to how successful you can be. It’s incompatible with the Horatio Alger story we cherish in America.
What has happened though is that the financial community seems to be engaged in blowing bubbles more than helping to create wealth and investing in our country. When you blow bubbles, you create money out of thin air, and then it pops and everything crashes back to where you started.
That was the dot.com bust, and then the housing bubble and each time the winners are the financial community who get nice big fat bonuses and the losers are the pension funds and other institutional investors trying to follow the pea under the shell.
Meanwhile you and me end up footing the bill because if they fail, we’re all screwed and our economy collapses. Anyway, the thing is that if you bothered to stop rambling on about how government is the source of all our problems you might realize that maybe you have a bone to pick with the way the financial community rewards itself while we provide for its comfy welfare net.

My niece the Peta-loving vegan has a pair of those shoes and they seriously creep me out when she wears them. They repel me but like some grotesque physical deformity, the eye continues to be drawn to them. (She hates corporations too. And greed. I have a pair of them which I wear to the gym. I like them a lot. You can wear special socks if you want to, but more practically you can simply wash them periodically in the washing machine.
Those shoes, by the way, are a good example of the diversity of products you can only get under capitalism. Most people no doubt would be skeptical about them, which is fine, and they don’t have to pay for them. Some people think the shoes are good enough idea, and are willing to pay for them. Everyone is happy.
There’s no way that one of those stupid committees could have come up with them.
The event was so disastrous that the opposition may well have sponsored it… Are there any names or well-known personalities behind “day of rage”? Should I add this to my list of conspiracies?
Perhaps the real problem is just unrealistic expectations. You cannot effectively occupy a major city with 11 over-credentialed baristas. Perhaps they should have called it “Days of Minor Annoyance, With Optional Drum Circle If People Want” and avoided getting peoples hopes up too high.

I checked out one of the Daily Kos picture blogs on the New York theater of this revolution, and saw what must have been the Quartermaster — a young lady sitting comfortably, drinking a carton of orange juice, in front of a big stack of pizzas. Hm. I think I could join the revolution for at least an hour or so. There was also a picture of a woman with a very uninviting sign: JOIN THE ARMY OF THE HOMELESS. Gotta work on that messaging.

What, no classes at the AofAU? I think I saw most of these “kids” when we took our daughter on a college tour of the Academy of Art U downtown (not goin’ there). There might even be some of the instructors there, too.
They claim to have occupied Dallas, but we know that can’t be true. The only city in Texas where such types could make any progress is Austin, otherwise known as Babylon on the Colorado. And Austin’s only geographically in Texas. Spiritually, it’s next to Berkeley.
Actually Austin is closer to Havana, spiritually and ideologically. That’s one reason I moved out of the city. Don’t forget Kirk Watson was mayor and highly regarded by left wing lemmings in Austin, TX. The best things about Austin are the BBQ and coeds, even the music scene has gone downhill since the passing of Clifford Antone.

While the rest of the nation’s protests happily look to be fizzling, New York’s is growing thanks to the elites in the media, the NYPD, city government, and the unions.
Last Saturday, they marched up Broadway without a permit, blocking the city’s main traffic artery and making nuisances of themselves. While trying to contain the madness, one NYPD officer pepper-sprayed some girls. Apparently pepper-spraying one American hippie draws the same condemnation from the world media as does Iran killing 5000 protesters, as the outrage made its way to major left-media sources including The Atlantic and the New York Times.
Since then, the standard set of leftist celebrities (Michael Moore, Susan Sarandon, Cornel West) have put in appearances, drawing more to the group. More importantly, the unions have gotten in the game, with SEIU providing branded ponchos and other support, and NYC’s Transit Workers Union joining in for a march next Wednesday. That union has 38,000 members, so it won’t take that high of a fraction participating to be disruptive.
Despite the group’s taking over a privately owned space, the police won’t let that owner evict them, presumably to avoid a much nastier version of Saturday’s publicity. Financial District residents, severely inconvenienced by these morons, petitioned their Community Board to take action; the Board tabled the petition. Meanwhile, the police continue to inconvenience the law-abiding to protect Financial District landmarks from the nutcases. Most streets East off Broadway remain blocked off, and the Bull statue remains barricaded. Foot traffic in the area is down, hurting local shops.
I fear the chaos likely to happn next Wednesday, when the elite-supported hippies turn into a 10,000-strong mob of union thugs. I expect the NYPD to do nothing, cowed into inaction by bad publicity. These leftists want to spark a revolution or civil war, and because no one is seriously opposing them, or defending forceful NYPD action, they may very well succeed. Don’t get caught off guard if a riot starts on Wednesday.
Civil war? Maybe. Revolution? Fugeddaboutit.
And in that New York civil war, expect a million Bernie Goetzes and another million Travis Bickles facing off against a few hundred thousand cast members from Hair. It ain’t gonna be pretty.
But Mayor Nanny has already throw his lot in with the revolutionaries.
Meanwhile, the NYPD has important work to do. There’s a report that somebody put salt on his fries.
Even a won conflict is a disaster, particularly if concentrated in the Financial District. This needs to be stopped now, and as snork noted, at the moment Bloomberg and the NYPD are cowardly sitting around doing nothing. And which side do you think our SEIU-bought president would be on?
Even without the Bernie Goetzes and Travis Bickles, it wouldn’t be pretty.
As much as I despise leftist ideology, I sympathize with the occupiers in many ways. They are against pretty much the same things that I the Tea Party is against: crony capitalism. Yes, many of these kids are brainwashed and not so smart, but many of their slogans are stupid. Nonetheless, there are similarities. Both are ignored by MSM. Both are concerned about ordinary people. Both are against government-connected fat cats. The biggest difference is ideology: the Left says that private capital controls the government, the Right says the government controls private capital. In reality, it is the same people controlling both. It doesn’t matter if they work at the Treasury, Goldman Sachs, or FRS – it’s the same clique. The main purpose of the Left/Right ideologies is to keep us divided.

If the occupiers asked the private property owner permission to occupy the private property would that make it OK? This is exactly what the occupiers and protesters did in New York. The private property owners made two request: no sleeping bags and no tents.
Jaycee, Brookfield Properties has been trying to evict the protesters for a week now. The NYPD refuses to do so. The NYPD also refuses to wade into the hippies to hand out citations for breaking the owner’s rules, or even for city laws against drug and tobacco use. Marijuana and LSD are taken openly, and Bloomberg’s new ban on smoking in public parks is unenforced here. Perhaps if the police actively prosecuted drug use here, they could bum the hippies out enough to drive them away.
snork – you are right, many of these people are what you say, but I know some libertarian-leaning or apolitical people who went to Wall St, who sympathize with the protesters, because they are angry at Wall St. And I wouldn’t be dismissive about apolitical people.

What is true is that people often confuse capitalism with free enterprise. They’re not at all the same thing, though they ideally go hand-in-hand. CA good example of capitalism without free enterprise is the inside dealing at Solyndra. Nothing free about that, except the taxpayer money handed out to favored parties. On the other end, we have the hot dog cart that somebody bought with his $3000 in savings. No capital formation involved, but free enterprise. Until Mayor Nanny starts harassing him, anyway.
But capitalism definitely exists, and the communists in China practice it quite effectively.

This is pathetic. I’m in the DC area; the daily traffic report includes which roads are blocked for protests. We see over a hundred thousand every January for the March for Life, hundreds every time there are IMF protests, dozens when SNAP had their conference here a month or so ago. If my best friend and I took our families for a walk, we’d outnumber these guys. (Okay, I’ll give them this: they outnumber the PETA group that was on the National Mall back in August).
Well if they want to occupy Orlando they can have it, but they have to promise not to leave during the summer.

Interesting to hear. Some of my lefty friends on Facebook are posting stuff about “Occupy Wall St.” but I haven’t seen an crowd shots that would give an idea about the size of the crowd.

On the first Saturday of the protest, 1000-2000. That quickly declined to about 150-200 camping out in the park. An influx of out-of-towners inflated their numbers to 800-1000 for last Saturday’s march, the one where they blocked off Broadway, had 80 arrested, and the pepper spray heard round the world was fired. The pepper spray, and subsequent celebrity attention (now they get a Radiohead concert at 4 today) increased their encampment numbers to around 300. The big question is what happens this weekend, and then what happens next Wednesday when major unions are set to join in.
Lee Harris utilized the prior generation of activists to describe what a fantasy ideology is and these people have that written all over them. It is all about them… and if history repeats itself as tragedy and then farce, these people are the embodiment of the step beyond farce…

well, I am relieved to know the “Days of Rage” are indeed ongoing. For the last couple weeks, I thought it was just more regular bums, stoners, drunks, and crazies passed out on the benches outside of Boston’s South Station.
Judging from the map in the first photograph, these poor souls don’t know much about geography — at the very least, they have misplaced Kansas City, putting it where Joplin should be. Has the new government occupied the wrong city?
I thought we wouldn’t have this sort of thing once Obama was in office. They must all be racists.

Notice on the map poster that Portland, Oregon has slid a few hundred miles south. If these people were sincere they would put things back where they found them when they were done occupying.

In reality, they shit in the plush bathrooms of the eeevvvilll corporate-owned retail stores and hotels surrounding Union Square. And as they wipe their asses with the eeeeevilllll corporate-produced toilet paper made from clear-cut old-growth trees, they’re thinking, “I hope mom transferred some more money from my trust fund into my debit card account! I need to upgrade from 3G to 4G.”
Might be why they aren’t in Seattle. Ever try to find a place to take a leak downtown?

Hell in Manhattan, NYC, they were marching to Police headquarters and got lost (and no, no I don’t know how they missed the HUGE, Reddish Orange colored ONE POLICE PLAZA either!) but wound up having to sleep on the entrances/exits to the Brooklyn Bridge and when the Police (“POO-L-ICE”!) shooed them away, they went into default mode and decided to protest there! I don’t know why the Brooklyn Bridge – my favorite bridge in my adopted Hometown – I mean what did the bridge ever do to them? And crossing the bridge is FREE!! NO money at all!
How did they manage that with their phones with GPS? These are the science uber alles bunch, no?
Open letter to Zombie Occupiers,
Unfortunately your efforts are counterproductive. We recognize your committment to this great grass roots movement, to your desire to seek a change in this corrupt elitist government, and to curb corporate greed. But really, zombies? Through your efforts you have, in effect, set this movement back. In spite of the mainstream media’s reluctance to promulgate the voice of the American people, the offensive has been, until now, gaining ground. You have brought attention to the Occupation, but at what cost? The media has given your Zombie inititive more coverage in one day than this campaign has received since it began; regrettably, this attention will be used to discredit the entire foundation of the objective and to blur the intended message. You are, kind of, a joke. The goal is to have our collective voice recognized and taken seriously but you are making a mockery of the movement. We understand you are on our side, and as far as the whole ‘corporate zombie’ thing goes, we get it. But do they? Do we want to portray an image of B movie monsters with a bone to pick, or do we want to be taken seriously, as real people with a real message and real ideas? Halloween is only a few weeks away, please do us all a favor and save your makeup and fake blood until then.
I’m sure that others have commented on this but aren’t all these “occupations” just a little on the, er, “white” side? The one is New York is getting increased coverage because it’s an easy news story and lazy reporters can eat up five minutes of nightly news airtime with “reports” on the protestors. I’ve noticed practically no African-Americans or any other “persons of color”in these stories.
Is is possible that the “Occupy Wall Street” movement (and it’s ancillary groups) are really……RAAAACISSSTS? You would have thought that the organizers of these affairs would have been hip-deep in “diversity coordinators” to insure that the right “rainbow of color” was properly represented at these events. But then again your average Black, Latino or Asian individual simply has more sense.
The Violence of Intolerant Polarization
Mohandas Gandhi said, “Intolerance is itself a form of violence and an obstacle to the growth of a true democratic spirit.” He was right on the mark with that observation, although he was only addressing transparent intolerance and physical violence, not the subtle intolerance and invitations to violence favored by the Obama administration.
It’s just too bad Gandhi isn’t around today advising America’s president.
Intolerance and violence have become hallmarks of life in Barack Hussein Obama’s America, our America, fueled by systematic administration policies of polarizing and dividing the nation for political-ideological purposes. What we are witnessing is a far cry from the civility and unity he preaches but in perfect harmony with what he and his Democrat Party have intentionally fostered.
Obama has repeatedly speechified on the need for civil discourse and actions, which, like so much of what he says, is contradicted by what he does. It boils down to all talk, talk, talk. This administration has talked the civil, tolerance talk and walked the walk of the most uncivil and intolerant administration in American history.
At the same time Obama mouths conciliatory words, his union minions–think Teamsters’ President Hoffa–his mainstream media lackeys–think MSNBC’s Rachel Maddow–his congressional cohorts–think Maxine Waters–have have intensified their vile, personal attacks on anyone who dares to disagree with him.
If anyone seriously believes that that gross, intolerant incivilty isn’t tacitly approved by Obama’s DNC, explanations of why such invective goes unchallenged and un-rebuked by the White House are invited. Objections to the contention that failure to censure scurrilous leftist vituperation has contributed to a pervasive violent atmosphere in the United States are invited as well.
Some of the most devious machinations of the Obamians have been their collective winks extended to rioters, insurrectionists, and to those who would reject constitutional mandates, our national law, in the name of expediency and ideology.
The marked increase in street violence and borderline chaos may be controllable by local authorities, assuming they are given permission to enforce laws in P.C. America. However, another, more sinister, force is in play in America, the manipulated polarization of the populace and the undermining of the very foundations of our Republic.
What really constitutes incivility? What really breeds violence? What really leads to polarization and divisiveness? Is it not a failure of political leadership, a refusal to rein in the uncivil and the criminal elements in a society, a tacit, or worse, an overt approval of incivility and criminality?
In a democratic republic, exceeding in gravity even the absence of a lack of moral leadership and condoning of wrongdoing, a blatant disregard for the law of the land, for the legal authority under which any people live, naturally results in the commission of every conceivable evil by malcontents and nihilists who interpret that disregard as a blank check issued by their leaders to do as they please.
In the United States of America, the guiding force and most basic principles which delineate the rights, privileges, and responsibities of Americans are contained in our Constitution, the same 224 year old document which President Barack Hussein Obama, his administration, and his supporters have repeatedly and consistently ignored, abused, and trashed.
Obama knows full well his constituency base will remain, if not rock-solid, reasonably supportive and must hope they will still carry him on to re-election while his opponents are intimidated into submission and defeat. Meanwhile, his henchmen and henchwomen labor on as his surrogates to conceal his leadership-challenged, intolerance-based administration.
We are witnessing the consequences of that disgrace . . .

On my morning commute to work, I pass the Federal Reserve Bank in Dallas. Today I was running late and passed the Federal Reserve around 9:15. There were public baracades locate around the sidewalk around the building and a number of police in cars and bicycles near by. I thought maybe some dignitary was visiting. As I got to the main intersection in front of the Federal Reserve I realized that this was related to the so-called Occupy Wall Street Protest as I saw one loan protester picketing in front of the Bank.
Heard B of A is relocating its headquarters to Uranus. Oh no. I just put Uranus at risk from a bunch of folks who should be similiarly monikered.
Occupy The Occupation!
This Saturday, as the occupiers rouse themselves(around 2PM) be ready–it’s time to kick it up a notch.
Head into an occupied zone(if you have one) and sit down, in/near the center, and have a cup of tea–preferably in a small plactic china tea cup.
Have a Tea Party inside the occupation!
After you’re done, go home and have a life, it’s looking like it’s gonna be a beautiful fall day.
Occupy SF pasted the silhouette of the Transamerica™® building on their banner art? Okay! Is the Statue of Liberty considered gauche or too jingoistic? Maybe the Coit Tower is far too phallic.. even for San Francisco?
