I hear that CNN is going to book this and use it to look for MA370. But in all seriousness the spirit behind this is noble and really Kool, but $50 Million is not going to provide a great deal of capability -- especially to explore the reallly unknown parts of the ocean at extreme depth. So, calling all venture capitalists -- time to pony up.

"Second star to the right, and on til morning" I never knew that was a reference to something else until just now.

The boat looks pretty doable, not a whole lot different from an untethered oil platform.

That's a very good point. It mostly floats along. So take the cost of a free floating oil rig, add 50% for low rate propulsion and you just might be close. Zeprin is right, A/C carries cost about 5 billion each (a while back) but they have to go very fast and launch and retrieve aircraft. This things mostly floats.

last time I looked, $50 million would almost cover the cost of one carrier aircraft. But not even come close to being a down payment on the carrier itself.
And I see this thing as a sort of submersible carrier... While I see any fundamental research as a good thing, I'm thinking they need to spend that first $50M on figuring out how to raise the massive funds needed to come to fruition.
And if it stays a private enterprise, it just might make it. But if it takes the Kings Shilling........well then, it'll be competing with Presidential Libraries and unneeded bridges and coffee fund over runs...etc., etc......
