Don’t Be Evil or Whatevs

What you need to know:

Google caused a stir this week when it announced a controversial change that lets those with Gmail and Google+ accounts email anyone who also has both accounts — even if the sender doesn’t know the recipient’s email address. Unless you opt out, this means you can start receiving messages from strangers who follow you on Google+.

Though Google’s bold move has surprised many, it’s not the first setting — or the only one — for which Google signs you up automatically. Here’s how to opt out of Google’s latest change, plus four more settings to check.

Click through to see how to undo Google’s damage. I’d fully delete myself from Google, except that I need to be able to upload to YouTube. Fortunately, I’m able to do that with a dummy email account.

But I won’t use Google for search anymore and haven’t for a while now — which is a real shame because they’re still by far the best search engine available.

Their practices however stink, and I won’t be a party to them.

Every business needs to grow. "Don't be evil" is a nice slogan, but it is meaningless when Google's search engine is used for 90% (or whatever) of web searchers, and it would cost a billion $ to increase that number by 5%, especially when the same revenue growth that could be made by increasing that number by 5% can be made by mining the data of current users by changing the TOS by a few words.
Sorry about the run-on sentence.
Either Page & Brin new this when they started, or they didn't. If they did, it makes them look predatory, if they didn't it makes them look stupid.
The internet hasn't changed humanity as much as some people think.

Of course, since I won't sign up for Google+, I can't comment on your YouTube videos. The YouTube account I signed up for about a decade ago isn't good enough any more.

...except that I need to be able to upload to YouTube.

Why? No other video host will do? Try AnabapTube.

I got Gmail's message about this new setting and looked at the link that was included. It told me all I needed to know about opting out. I decided that since I can block anyone who contacts me that way from ever doing so again, I'm okay with it.

To reiterate: Google told me how to opt out. Because I pay attention. Because I know that I'm not Google's customer.

The very idea that one should be able to trust a company that's providing its services for free never ceases to amaze me. "The price of liberty is eternal vigilance" does not apply only to politicians.

Jeez. I have never seen so much panty-bunching.
