America’s “Most Patriotic” Brands

July 9th, 2013 - 7:47 am

Now that’s an excellent question, what brands do American consumers think represent the best about our country? USA Today asked and got the top 25, and the number one pick had me nodding my head: Jeep.

Here’s the story:

It’s the brand known for winning World War II, for providing reliable transportation for American GI’s under the toughest conditions for generations. And lately, it has come to symbolize American ruggedness and a sense of adventure.

So perhaps it’s appropriate that Chrysler Group’s Jeep brand is named in a survey as the most patriotic brand from 197 famous brand names in 35 categories.

Heck, Jeep even beat out Coca-Cola, Levi’s, Harley-Davidson and Disney in the top 25.

Also on the list: Zippo, Smith & Wesson, and John Deere. So whatever it is that’s awesome and right and just generally kick-ass about America… well, they haven’t killed it off yet.

Everyone knows the list is crap when Jeep is listed at all. If the Italian Jeep is there, why not the German Mercedes?

Where the hell are Microsoft, Apple, IBM, Nike?

Since when are Microsoft, Apple, IBM and Nike examples of patriotic companies? Successful, sure, and as a result certainly American icons-- but patriotic? That's a stretch by any measure.

Jeep/Chrysler being on there, and indeed #1, is more to do with its massively significant history than much else. Today the company is a mess and the cars borderline (with the exception of things that bear the SRT badge), but it would be tough to argue the historical significance. The Willys Jeep is synonymous with "the good guys are coming".

Either way-- the list came out of a marketing firm in Manhattan. Deploy many large grains of salt.

How many of those most patriotic brands are not made in China these days?

But it's a Chrysler, which means an Italian-owned, semi-public, gov't subsidized monstrosity. But, if Jeep can survive AMC I guess it can survive Fiat.

Don't be too hard on AMC. They did give us the CJ-7 with the optional five liter 304 V-8. It didn't put out a whole lot of power, but that thing was bulletproof.

They also gave us the Cherokee XJ and the 4.2L I6 (which Chrysler perfected as the 4.0L).

AMC was permanently undercapitalized, but they did some great stuff.
