Grasping at Straws

Curious report from The Hill on tonight’s Oval Office address on the Iraq drawdown:

President Obama has an opportunity Tuesday night to remind his supporters on the left of a time when they were all on the same page, united in opposition to George W. Bush and his war in Iraq.

Obama’s highly anticipated Oval Office address on the end of combat operations in Iraq comes at a perilous moment for his presidency, but it’s a moment that could serve as a reminder to liberals that they once rallied around Obama as the man who would bring the war to an end.

The obvious problem is, that Obama has followed, to the letter, a status-of-forces agreement negotiated with Baghdad by the Bush Administration. His speech tonight will be the equivalent of your contractor claiming credit for designing kitchen remodel because he didn’t pee all over the blueprints.

The less obvious problem is, what is Obama doing shoring up his antiwar base just 63 days before the election? This is when he’s supposed to be reminding independents about all the wonderful things he and his Democratic congressional majorities have accomplished in the last 18 months or so.

Oh, right…
