so much conventional wisdom is just bunk. Let’s just take one example, that the country is hopelessly polarized. How can that be when Independents are the biggest voting block? America has sunk into a relativist muddle. Conservatives are as bad as any. I watched them nitpick candidates to death over thankless issues as Mormonism, uable to stir themselves to vote for a war hero and lifetime public servant. That showed me that Americans have no creed, anymore.

Bill M. The flavor I like is reality….see the comments of Fred, George Fulmore, Tom Ontis and a few others in the comments section. The panic and fear that is trying to be created in many Blogs (and a network or two) will not serve our nation well.

Any of us who are over the age of 20 know that we live on a seesaw, it is moving today one way (I believe up) before it comes down again.

My only hope is that somehow we continue to stay “up” a little higher with each cycle. I remain impressed that so many Democratic political leaders seem to be committed to that vision, regardless of the personal cost. God Bless them.

VDH is a fine writer and can make make many thoughtful points. I enjoy reading his essays but I never want to live in an echo chamber.

Best of luck to you Bill and a Happy New Year. Happy new Year to you Professor Hanson.

Angry Black guy is the typical guy who thinks no one else understands his plight. He talks like he knows all about slavery from experience. Nada!
Why don’t you give up always telling the rest of America nobody knows anything about the poor in this country unless he is a person of color.
Slavery was a terrible thing. No argument there. I dare say that the average black in America is much better off than the average black in Africa or any other part of the world for that matter.
Let’s hear it for moderation in all things. This thing Obama has going on is way left of liberalism…left of socalism as well as communism…how about Baby Doc???

If you truly believe that Obama is advocating and pushing a ‘far left’ or progressive agenda, then you’ve really got to take another look at the divisions and goals of the groups within the democratic party. Obama is not liberal nor is he progressive. He’s a corporate centrist. It’s important that you get these things right, because his policies and failures, when viewed through the lens of him being a liberal, cause harm to the longterm goals of actual liberals.

If you knew anything about radicals, or “leftists”, you would realize that Obama is no leftist. Are you kidding?
Did he immediately institute single-payer health insurance when elected, & outlaw insurance comapnies? Did he end both wars? Did he throw the lobbyists out of Washington? Repeal don’t ask, don’t tell? Bring up Bush/Cheney, both Vietnam service evaders, the latter actually a draft dodger, on war criminal charges?
He actually broadcast a Christmas message! Christmas! I know, there was some secret message in the tree that read: Death to The Infidel!
He asked the legislature to propose a modest health care plan that was even less “liberal” than the ones proposed by Nixon & Truman. This was deemed too “left-wing” for most people.
Oh my God! He appointed czars! I think it has been settled that czars have been a fixture in Washington through several administrations, a fact conveniently ignored by you Righty-Tighties.
He kept on some of Bush’s appointees, which Ann Coulter was even happy about.
Though you are well-read & literate, you really have no argument. We all know his faults, he is not, however a “communist”, or “socialist”.
The very same things were said about Roosevelt when he was up for re-election, e.g, he was part of the New York political machine, he was a Communist, he was going to expand social welfare programs that would interfere with business and people’s personal lives, take away private & personal initiative, etc.
I would think being a student of history that you would realize you are repeating the same swill over and over, ad naseum.
You would trust health care companies, but not the democratically elected government of this country, with your lives, & let the insurance companies keep the stranglehold they have on every person in this country, from birth to death. So it’s ok for private corporations to control people’s lives, but not the government?
Wake up fellas, why do you think insurance co’s lobby, at the rate of 1.4 mil a day? You think that they don’t want to control your lives? That they have your best interests at heart? Talk about naive.
What was the unemployment rate two years into Reagan’s first term? And the defecit?
Just let me know.
Oh, I suppose I could help you out a bit with your research.
Oh my God, your hero Reagan gave you some tax cuts! Whoops, didn’t help.
Bush did it? Yes, he did, along with some help from Reagan.
Bush got Congress to pass No Child Left Behind and the Medicaire prescription drug act, with no provision to pay for it.
