Where Did These Guys Come From?
The Origins of Obamism
I do not think it will be easy to delay Obamism. It is not just that both houses of Congress are under liberal leadership with ample majorities, with a White House and captive media egging them on. The problem is that now the entire engine of the federal government is harnessed in the most unapologetic way to pushing through a far left agenda. There is no shame, no hesitancy in using the full powers of the state.
How does that work out? Without qualification (remember we are in a new age of transparency and ethical reform) votes are bought with hundred-million-dollar earmarks; the attorney general predicates judicial action on the political ramifications of indicting or not indicting; federal bureaucracies (watch the EPA if cap and trade stalls) are devoted to the new Caesar rather than the letter of the law.
Such a strange scenario we have found ourselves in—a clear majority of Americans is opposed to almost everything Obama has to offer; congressional representatives know they are acting against the will of the people, but know too that they are offered all sorts of borrowed money for their districts to compensate for their unpopular actions. And a charismatic commander in chief believes that he can charm even the angriest of critics, and that anything he promises (Iran’s deadlines, closing of Guantanamo, new transparency, no more lobbyists, etc) means zilch and can be contextualized by another “let me be perfectly clear” speech spiced with a couple of the usual “it would have been impossible for someone as unlikely as me to have become President just (fill in the blanks) years ago”
No, I would not count Obama out. So what drives his agenda? What are its origins?
Here are the three most prominent catalysts.
Equality of Result
What Barack Obama advocates is as old as Plato’s Republic and Aristotle’s Politics, the agenda of the classical dêmos and Roman turba.
It is why the French Revolution emphasized égalité and fraternité, while the Founding Fathers instead championed the freedom of the individual from the despotism of the state. In short, equality of result doctrine ignores the role of markets, of skills, of tragedy itself that renders some of us ill, others in perfect health, some born gifted, others less so, some evil by nature, others good, and instead promises that the state can even us all out through its power of material redistribution. Give us all the same amount of money and perks at the end of the day, and then utopia reigns under the benevolent watch of Ivy-League professors and organizers.
It is a given that what we make is not our own, but predicated on the liberality of society. Thus, for those who were too greedy, too conniving, or even too lucky, the state must step in to ensure that we end up the same.
In its most benign form, we know this as progressivism or communitarianism, a big government, high tax philosophy that co-exists within democracy. Its more pernicious strains are socialist, in which the state ensures, through bureaucratic fiat and a labyrinth of laws that curb free expression, that redistribution is institutionalized. And the virulent form (thankfully with the fall of the Soviet Union and the transformation of China not so global-threatening any more) is, of course, a murderous communism, in which any means necessary are justified to ensure the desire ends and the rule of anointed apparat. Remember, history’s greatest killers (Stalin and Mao) do it all “for the people.”
Multiculturalism
But there is another element to Barack Obama besides progressive statism. A number of contemporary –isms and –ologies (multiculturalism, moral equivalence, utopian pacifism, post-modernism) also help to explain Obamism, especially in cultural terms. Our universities subscribe to race/class/gender theory of exploitation, in which much of the unhappiness of today’s women, of today’s nonwhite, and of today’s poor originates with the privileges of the white Christian Western male that are predicated on oppression.
It works like this: The ghetto resident, the denizen of the barrio, the abandoned and divorced waitress with three young children, can all chart their poverty and unhappiness not to accident, fate, bad luck, bad decisions, poor judgment, illegality or drug use, or simple tragedy, but rather exclusively to a system that is rigged to ensure oppression on the basis of race, class, and gender—often insidious and unfathomable except to the sensitive and gifted academic or community organizer.
So Obama combines the age-old belief that the state is there to level the playing field (rather than protect the rights of the individual and secure the safety of the people from foreign threats), with the postmodern notion that government must recompensate those by fiat on the basis on their race or class or gender. Remember all that, and everything from the Professor Gates incident, to the dutiful attendance at the foot of Rev. Wright to Van Jones become logical rather than aberrant. Michelle Obama could make $300,000 and she will always be more a victim than the Appalachian coal miner who earns $30,000, by virtue of her race and gender.
The Chicago Way
A third and final ingredient to Obamism is the Chicago way. Here we see an interesting updated version of the old big-city, Daley thuggery. Rahm Emanuel threatens recalcitrant congressmen with reminders of the long Obama memory. The Axelrod/Jarrett clique ensures that the government channels stimuli to blue-states, that key Congress people are bought off with tens of millions of government largess, that every campaign promise—from no lobbyists and airing on C-span health care debates to posting impending legislation on the Internet for set durations and “reaching across the aisle”—is simply cynical fluff that no sane person would take seriously.
So?
In short, we have a traditional statist bent on redistribution (Obama’s words, not mine), updated with the postmodern belief that race/class/gender oppressions require government affirmative reactions (which also abroad explains why we reach out to enemies and shun allies), all energized by an ends justify the means Chicago bare-knuckles apparat.
And?
These true believers, then, don’t really care that the Blue Dogs (if such really exist) bite the dust in 2010, if Harry Reid goes up in smoke, or indeed, if Barack Obama is reelected. Instead, they will institutionalize an agenda that will affect America for generations, move it sharply to the left, and earn a spot in the academic pantheon of American heroes.
Asking why would Obama & Co. be so self-destructive to push through an array of proposals that have no more than 45% of the public’s support is like asking whether the English Prof who teaches incomprehensible Foucauldian theory worries whether he has only 2 students, or whether the well-off union boss is all that upset that membership has sunk to 30% of the workforce, or multimillion-dollar-earning Sarah Palin-interviewing Katie Couric is worried about her sinking ratings, or whether the New York Times columnists are upset that their mother paper is broke with subscription and readership down, and laying off thousands of blue-collar employees.
Instead, for the true believer, it is all about the self, and the sense of the self—and damn all other considerations. (We saw that with Jimmy Carter as well; that he destroyed liberal Democrat politics for a generation meant nothing; that he won prizes and jet-setted the world for thirty years meant everything. For these people, it is always about them—all the time. Let us eat cake as they end up liberal icons for the duration).
What Are We Left With?
The most blatant cynicism in recent American political history—a man who ran as a bipartisan who is the most partisan we’ve seen, a healer whose even flippant comments are designed to offend, a statist who assumes that the sheared sheep cannot stampede somewhere else, a reformer who trusts his honey-laced rhetoric can disguise Daley style-corruption.
On that happy note.
Everything, as my dear late mother lectured me, happens for a reason, or at least presents a sort of logic—irony, paradox, karma, and nemesis being the best ways of interpreting our unfathomable existences. It took messianic narcissistic Barack Obama to expose the full extent of the mess that a once noble tradition of 19th-century liberalism had devolved into. Only he could have rammed it down the throats of the American people, and when he is done, we will suffer, but also sicken of it for quite a while.
Otherwise, Merry Christmas! And thanks again to the most informed, articulate, and outspoken commentators in the blogosphere!

Yes, yes, good doctor….and Merry Christmas to you too.
“Otherwise, Merry Christmas” is right!!!!!
There more be more truth in that last declaration than all the other oh so accurate and articulate things you’ve said here.
Thanks for a great year of inspired thoughtfulness, Dr. Hanson.
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to you and your family, Dr. Hanson!
Thank you so much for your writings – I hope to meet you and shake your hand one day.
John
This is the best blog.
I would add Hollywood like star power as a dimension. I do not mean his supporters over there but his own star appeal. Remember all those people in the crowds crying when he got elected, cheering when he said that he would recede the oceans, claiming that we are the ones that we have been waiting for (he was thinking I’m the one that you have been waiting for). Only a thoroughly star obsessed nation could have rooted for this man with his great charisma, but no experience to speak of and some clearly left wing ideas. Remember the brain of a person in a audience only captures 7% of what is actually said, 43% captures the sound and 50% the looks. Yes America, the chickens have indeed come home to roost
Brilliant !
Thank you, again.
I especially appreciate this:
It is why the French Revolution emphasized égalité and fraternité, while the Founding Fathers instead championed the freedom of the individual from the despotism of the state.
Clearly, the Obamaists are trying to overthrow the legacy of the Founders.
Thank you VDH. Merry Christmas to you and a great 2010.
November can’t come fast enough for our great country.
Sir,
A fantastic summary.
And yet, you seem to take BHO in isolation with this analysis.
Can we place him in context with Progressivism, and the demolition of the Federalist approach to governance?
It seems that, if Senators were still State appointees, and the Federal Reserve nonexistent, then the Federal government might not be such a godforsaken golden calf.
Given all of this backward-looking analysis, can you offer any scenarios beside tyranny for the American future?
Thanks,
Chris
Merry Christmas Dr. Hanson. Your writing is the only thing that makes sense in this world right now. It seems as though the world is “out of sorts.” I can only hope and pray that we find our way.
Merry Christmas to you, Professor, and thank you for all your fine work. Best Wishes!
As a Nebraska resident of fifty some years, I can state with some authority that if Ben Nelson runs for re-election he is beat.
The Omaha World Herald is full of angry letters about this vote. The airwaves are the same.
Nelson’s support in Nebraska is like our Platte River: a mile wide and an inch deep. The current governor would beat Nelson easily.
And Ben did himself no favors on the floor of the Senate with his confused defense speech.
VDH is spot on in his observation that the Obama Administration is all about Obama 24/7.
People are real tired of his self-referential remarks and the use of “I” and “we” all the time. And I predict Obama will be blaming Bush three years from now.
If there is one bright spot in this whole debacle it is the emergence of Sen. Tom Coburn as a possible Presidential candidate.
Compare Coburn’s life to that of Pres. Obama. Barry Obama started running for office in high school. Tom Coburn was a top accounting student at Oklahoma State. He then went into the family business. After it was sold, he went to the Univ. of Oklahoma Medical School. In 25 years in medicine, he delivered over 4,000 babies.
Coburn can connect with real people; not the Ivy League academics who love BHO. He knows his stuff and I think he is a much better speaker.
His focus on out-of-control federal spending could be his ticket to the White House.
If Coburn can frame the issues as the economy, he can have the same success as the guy who beat Jimmy Carter.
I was reading Frederick Turner’s American Frontier book and thinking how unfathomable this world is. I’ve still only read a couple of chapters, but I was thinking how Jeremiah is right. The heart is deceitfully wicked who can understand it. Apparently the first settlers did not even know that they were setting off the destruction of Indian culture. You have to read it. Very Sad. Then I thought that people do not even comprehend themsleves how else could we do commit such evils as Nazism and Communism thinking that we were saving the world? How on earth would something like that save the world and yet there we have people who believe they can change the wickedness in the human heart or ignore it and everything will be okay. In fact it will be made better. The heart is messed up though. It just reminds me that there must be a God. All that we have done in the name of reason to fix the world, all that The Romans did to bring peace, God still brought an order to it all.
I Don’t mean to insult western culture, just saying that all we have is truly a gift from God. It makes things so much better once you get over the initial shock. If when we try to fix the world we do the worst things, but when we try to help the world get along with things like we have in America we do the best what does that mean for the world? When we help our brother instead of judge his heart we seem to be in the right. How can man truly understand himself? Anyway, maybe you don’t see what I’m talking about, oh well.
Arrogance. That’s what Ben Nelson and the Dems were thinking when they passed the bill over public opposition.
One poll had 66% of Nebraskans opposed to Obamacare.
Most national polls had 60% opposed to Obamacare.
But the thing that shocked me is the language stating that certain provisions are not subject to repeal. What?
The current Congress can’t tie the hands of the next Congress. If that was the law, then we would have been stuck with all sorts of statutes from earlier years: like slavery and Prohibition.
No one made Harry Reid, Nancy Pelosi or Barack Obama American royalty. The people still rule here.
Merry Christmas to Dr Hansen and all the fellow VDH readers.
There’s a short story by Kurt Vonnegut titled “Harrison Bergeron”, that includes a government position called the Handicapper General. It was written in 1961, but reading it again recently, I believe it suits the times now more than ever. I recommend it as a cautionary tale of a government imposed level playing field.
Yikes.
I pray 2010 gives us a glimmer of hope.
Oh how I pray.
*sigh*
Pogo was so right when he said that we’ve found the enemy and he is us, without exception!
What I truly hope is that our solution to this mess is not like what Romania when it threw off its shackles in 1989. Our national solution has to be done only at the ballot box otherwise we’ve lost everything and gained the USSR instead.
However, mankind’s history has often shown that our likely solution to Obama mania will not be pretty nor nice. That would be a shame; pity.
And a Very Merry Christmas to You, Victor David Hanson!
This article — a thorough summary of the essence of what’s behind the sad truth of the past year of Obamism. And an honest glimpse at the hard future before us.
Sad truths or not — we here are so fortunate to have the benefit of your consistently brilliant informative analyses and thoughtful, wise opinions.
Thank you.
Finally, we, the American people, the majority of who are moderate to conservative, are getting to know the left-wing of the Democrat party. They are not the compassionate, caring, helping people they wanted everyone to believe. Victor, your mother may have been right. We have to go through this to end up where we should be. Please continue with your clear analysis of today’s history.
Conservative ideals, goals and candidates will always be at a disadvantage to liberals agendas. The liberal agenda is the softer, easier path conceptually and literally. Unfortunately is will end in disaster as everyone flocks for the easy payout, the subsidy that is easy to gain and mis-use, the safety net that makes us feel secure.
Stark examples of the endpoint for countries that install these kinds of societies are all around us: North Korea vs. South Korea, China vs. Taiwan/Hong Kong, West Germany vs. East Germany before the wall came down.
Americans, wake up! 2010 & 2012 cannot come too soon!
1. Could BHO be a RNC deep plant to destroy the DNC?
2. I noted a post elsewhere that I LOVED: “America is at an awkward stage: Too late to work within the system, Too soon to start shooting the bastards.” – Anon
3. I’m in partial disagreement with #2.
Merry Christmas to all, and to all a goodnight!
A very interesting time to be an American. We’ll come out of it either a much better or a much worse country.
In the meantime, Marry Christmas and a Happier New Year to all.
I think the time has come for the several states to reassert their power. Clearly the federal government has zero concern for what the people say, perhaps the states banding together can put the feds back in their place.
A state-called Constitutional Convention for the purposes of:
1. Restoring the Senate to its original role as representative of the states
2. Term Limits for ALL federal offices including judges
3. Balanced Budget
4. Elimination of federal social programs
5. Restrictions on federal regulatory agencies especially EPA, OSHA, and others with direct effect on business and citizens
6. Elimination of a number of federal departments including Education, HHS, …
Oh, and Merry Christmas.
America elected what appeared to be the Frank Sinatra of politics … and now with every speech, magazine cover and foreign diplomatic trip people are seeing a low rent lounge act that wouldn’t get booked at a Holiday Inn Express. (Think Bill Murray in those SNL skits.)
Thanks for your insight, humor and steadfast faith in the spirit of the American people Mr. Hanson. Have a Merry Christmas !!!
I agree with all of this, especially the last bit about how the natural playing out of the well-laid leftist agenda seems to have been inevitable and has resulted in Obama and his exposing it in all its majesty.
One link in all this doesn’t make sense to me, though, and I have not been able to get to the bottom of it yet. That is, I don’t see how obama can be both a True Believer and a cynical narcissist. I see how he can be a True Believer and cynical manipulator, in the Alinskian mode. But I sense his true belief is as shallow as his knowledge, which is very shallow indeed.
I think he is really only a true believer in himself, much like Bill Clinton. True, he has been more thoroughly schooled than Clinton in the radical Left’s catechisms, as Prof. Hanson has outlined. But I think what he really believes in is his own world shattering uniqueness, which has been fed by several years of unprecedented media and pop culture idolatry. I think we will now see the evidence of that in the “hard pivot” we will see in the coming year, wherein the messianic rhetoric will focus on Obama’s unique abilities to save us all from economic ruin.
This is all about empowering the state further at the expense of the individual. Semantics and second-guessing, or expressing credulity at the left’s damning of the Constitution should be of no surprise.
The only way to turn it back is to start breakin’ the left’s stuff. Since that’s the only kind of protests the media covers, lets stop being so polite and impose independence upon the dependent.
What’s better, imposing statism on the free?
“OBAMAISM”?
WE ARE HAMPERED BY THE FACT THAT WE CANNOT USE THE CORRECT LABELS: “HEALTH CARE FASCISM!”
and “FIGHT HEALTH CARE FASCISM!” are the ACCURATE EPITHETS.
BTW, Merry CHIRSTMAS all y’all! (It was supposed to be #4 but danged this eggnog is stivv)
Do us all an even bigger favor, sir. Practice this as a speech several times. Rent a hall; record it with appluase from an audience. The POST IT on YouTube.
Get it out to people who are practically barred on a day to day basis by US schools, from ever hearing it.
A most depressing, if prescient column.
What we’re left with, essentially, is the choice of suffering this for generations, like sheep, or rising, as did our forebears against England, to destroy the Democrats and all their works.
Unfortunately, too few remain who are made of the stuff of our ancestors. Most Americans will not pledge their lives or sacred fortunes to the cause of liberty.
Voting them out will not exercise this cancer. It will, ultimately be rooted out with much bloodshed. Lamentably.
Merry Christmas from a long time fan.
Dr. Hanson: Everything you’ve written here is quite so. I continue to be amazed as pundits, liberal and conservative alike, continue to publicly puzzle over the behavior of Obama and certain congressional Dems. Why, they muse, would Obama do X, Y and Z? It’s clear that X is stupid, Y is insane and Z is incredibly dangerous on a planetary scale, but Obama–the smartest man in the known universe (wasn’t Hillary Clinton the smartest woman in the world not too long ago?)–is doing X Y and Z and bragging about it! What are we missing? What does he know that we don’t? Nothing. In fact, he knows far, far less than we know. To paraphrase William F. Buckley, he and his liberal elite know far less than the first thousand names in the Boston phone book.
What, after all, is a “community organizer,” and why do they work so intimately with corrupt machine politicians and criminals, petty and grand? They are all one in the same. Obama has all of the characteristics of the classic con man, but began to believe his own rhetoric and forgot the primary con man rule: Take the money and run; never stick around too long. Not yet a year in office and the nation is waking up, realizing that they have been conned, as Obama’s poll numbers clearly indicate. But community organizers, machine politicians, racist ministers, race hustlers, Murtha-style politicians, and the plethora of morally and criminally degenerate, never-vetted tzars (fisting, anyone?) that Obama and his minions have so blithely appointed share one obvious title: Parasite. All statists are parasites, always living off the wealth and dedication of others, others whom they reflexively denigrate and scorn (doctors who cut off legs for bigger government payoffs, for example, and what do we make of a president who makes fun of Special Olympians?), others whose work, innovation and industry make possible every aspect of the statist agenda.
I’ve no doubt that Obama and his statist sympathizers will cause enormous damage to America–they’ve already done great harm–and the only real question is how much and how long, if ever, it will take to undo it. There are so many potential problems on the international front–exacerbated, not mitigated by Obama–that the mind boggles considering them and their implications. We are actually entering an era–being pushed headlong and unwillingly by statists–where states (major cities are already flat busted, Detroit, for example), indeed, entire nations might well go bankrupt. What does a statist do when there is no longer a “they” to be oppressively taxed, when they’ve driven enough of the wealth and productivity of a nation into the ground, when it all comes crashing down? Of course, they become overt communists and start killing on a mass scale to maintain power and privilege–history makes that clear–but we must be clear in our understanding that we have elected people who would gladly burn down the house around them and pat themselves on the back for their magnificent, progressive accomplishments as the flames consume them and all of us, first, of course.
What would it take for people to rebel in a significant way, a way that our betters in Congress–and I’m not excluding far too many Republicans–could not possibly ignore? A nuclear explosion on American soil? Two? What if they were only low yield devices? Would the statists minimize the aftermath and call for calm and peace and understanding of those who were so oppressed by American evil that they were forced to unleash the power of the atom on their oppressors? What if China attacks and seizes Taiwan? Does anyone believe Obama would do anything? Would any nation, ever again, trust America? What happens when Obama forces Israel to go it alone against a mortal nuclear threat, forces Israel to break its ties with America to preserve the very lives of its citizens? Remember here, that statists do not believe in individual freedom, in the inherent, God-given worth of the individual, so they do not believe in self defense and certainly not national defense, unless those to be defended are a favored victim group.
I hope, Dr. Hanson, that everything does happen for a reason and that we can learn the requisite lessons without too high a cost and before it is too late to preserve freedom and democracy. I hope that another American revolution never becomes necessary. But when our “representatives” abandon the Constitution, when they try to carve their legislative whims into stone for all time to preserve death panels they deny ever existed, one can hardly be hopeful. Yet, the birth of Christ does give hope, and faith, and the greatest of these, love. Let us hope that sufficient Americans love freedom and humanity enough to ensure that our domestic statist/communists are never successful in destroying them. America always was and is the last, best hope of the world. A pity our president doesn’t understand that.
I don’t believe that the country will be moved to the left. Government policy may be moved there…for a time, but the government is not the nation.
The reason why these people have been able to seize power as they have is not because they have better ideas. Clearly their ideas and agendas are wholly bankrupt and destructive. The reason they’ve come to power is because those of us who do not buy into their nonsense have in our duty to promote those ideas that are good.
We have failed because we have allowed ourselves to be browbeaten by rabid leftists who attack any idea that is not their own as “offensive.”
When good men and women sit on the sidelines, silent for fear of being chastised by their existential enemies, evil prevails.
Leftists have gotten away with murder for far too long. We’ve let them get away with it. We’ve caved to their antics when we should have been pushing back.
So the next time some leftist starts trying to silence you, push back. Remember that what they are doing is not an attempt to convince you of anything through logic, reason, or truth; but to silence you because their arguments have no merit. Such people should be punished for attempting to subvert and destroy the open exchange of ideas that a free society depends upon.
The Chicago part and the multiculturalism part can be shown to be wrong, but the first isn’t so easy since a) it’s not that wrong, and b) most people support it. The vast majority of American support a mixed economy; most Republicans support SocSec. The libertarian/Randroid types who would return us to feudalism (or present-day Somalia) are *helping* Obama through their promotion of fringe theories.
The only reason I don’t think the tea parties are part of Obama’s “Cloward Piven” strategy is because a) I don’t think he has such a thing, and b) I think the TP leaders are indeed as nuts as they appear.
P.S. Some parts of what VDH writes sound like what I wrote in late October… of 2008:
http://24ahead.com/blog/archives/008247.html
Maybe more people should have listened then, and maybe more people should listen now and follow my plan to oppose him in a smart and effective way.
wow did VDH nail that
Merry Christmas everyone
What should conservatives do now?
At this point in time we are all breathlessly watching the amazing spectacle of descent of the Anointed One from the Garden of Eden into the crap-hole of history. What should the American conservatives do to accelerate this fall and make sure that our country gets back on track?
Firstly, they must follow the Napoleon’s maxim “Never interrupt your enemy when he is making a mistake.” The Medical Care Bill is a major mistake, and Obama will come to regret it. The bill is already unpopular with nearly 60% of the population, and this is even before the republican operatives went through it with a fine net, found all the hidden new taxes, regulations and handouts to the politically connected and made them public. The next year will be very exciting…

Professor, the French Revolution was as sinister as it was famous. And of course, military dictatorship the only possible outcome.
We suffer under the ill-begotten children of what Bertrand Russell I believe called “democratic despotism”. Rousseau’s Social Contract made legitimate anything, even mass murder, cf. “forced to be free”, and its children found a home in Germany in the 19th century with the Historical School.
What a disgusting group the “progressives” who owe their roots to the mass statism of Bismarck. Such nefarious minds like Commons, Ely, Witte, et al., devotees all of the GHS, whose only contributions to America were to rape it of its wealth and liberty.
When I hear politicians claim “the will of the people” I fear for it was always the “will of the people” that put millions in gulags and gas chambers.
Obama is just another in the long line of those who feel the state is uber alles, and since he won the election, he has the “will of the people”.
Barack Obama is a product of the stupidity that is weakness. As a culture we have grown weak and soft. He is the cancer that has resulted.
Don’t the Bush tax cuts expire at midnight 12/31? If so everyone will begin to take their Obamas medicine with thir paychecks of the 1-15-2010.
Merry Christmas.
I’ve often wondered about the idea that Obama is an RNC plant. If he didn’t exist, Carl Rove would have to invent him.
#21 Punkindrublic:
“1. Could BHO be a RNC deep plant to destroy the DNC?”
Nope. The RNC ain’t that smart.
Liberal Democrats are their own best antidote.
Look at the last time they controlled the White House and the Congress…from 1992 to 1994.
This time, if we keep to the bearings presently indicated by the pollsters, they’ll suffer at least the same fate as in 1994…and for basically the exact same reasons.
As soon as they get their hands on the wheel, they send the bus into a skid.
It would behoove us to consider what actions to take when conservatives regain power, since undoing Obamism would simply return us to the status quo ante, which is what gave rise to Obamism in the first place.
We must not just repeal his programs, but neuter the union bosses, end the permanent civil service system, reform government subsidy programs to “community” and advocacy groups, and end the welfare for system for the higher education system, (same thing as an advocacy group, when you think about it).
To say nothing of greasing the skids for the demise of the MSM and ushering in whatever replaces it.
Of course, all of this will be predicated on ejecting foreign money interests from influencing our domestic politics, which has been our true Achilles’ Heel since 1950 or so.
And we should also think about our options should the Democrats retain control of the Legislature…these might tend to be even more radical and unpleasant than the de-Obamification process I’ve roughly outlined above.
The present may echo the past. But that does not mean we should all lie down in bed with our faces to the wall to await the executioner. There is evidence that a significant segment of America is aroused and angry over what is now happening in Washington, even to the point where they realize that they have a President who is denying now what he said in 2008, though his 2008 language is undeniable. Rise up America! Don’t let the precious lives and blood of American fighting men and women, spent so generously in WWII and since to defeat totalitarianism, be wasted. Let it not have been spent in vain. Rise up America!
Dr. Hanson,
Merry Christmas to you and yours. Thanks for making sense of the things I can’t quite bring to a crystalline form with my limited cranium.
Everything happens for a reason? We got Obama to expose the evil of the Left?
Okay, it’s happened. Now what are we going to do?
Delia, sighing and praying ain’t gonna cut it. Doug Wright, I think we need stronger measures than the ballot box, unless we apply it to John Steele’s idea. In fact, John Steele, I think that’s something worth pushing in a big, big way.
So the “true believer” is self-absorbed, but has little or no self-interest? That doesn’t sound right.
Say rather that for the true believer it’s all about the sacred Cause, which trumps any self-interest they might possess, and you’re far closer to coherence.
VDH is an oracle of truth and wisdom. Thank you and Merry Christmas.
Obamism has it’s strengths, as an opponent, that is, but it may have the same achilles heel as communism. The statists must harvest their leadership from within. Obama is the perfect example of that. His world-view and his understanding of governments and their economies was formed through the prism of the left. Therefore, he really doesn’t know what he’s up against. I think we better understand the statist than the statist can ever understand us.
“Thus, for those who were too greedy, too conniving, or even too lucky, the state must step in to ensure that we end up the same.”
This is the heart of the disingenuousness of the right . . . minimizing the nature of the wrong in order to defend it rather than fix it. It’s more than greedy or conniving or lucky . . . it’s the blatantly dishonest and very often criminal behavior that we’re addressing.
But conservatives consistently stop short of forthrightly describing the issues. It’s why conservatives say, “Oh, waterboarding, a little water sprinkled on your face, ooh, ooh, putting underwear on your head, ooh, what’s so bad about that?” It’s why Sean Hannity volunteers to be waterboarded for charity, then disappears. Why, Sean? As your friend Ann Coulter, worse things happen at a fraternity hazing.
Complete nonsense. The root of obstruction. the redirecting of energy from solutions to outrage for purely political purposes. Proof that nation and family are not your core.
(1) President Barack Obama’s foreign policy reset: hold out an open hand to the fists of enemies, dictatorships, and tyrants – Iran’s mullahs, North Korea, Russia, Venezuela, Arabs; and a fist to the open hands of allies and democracies – Honduras, Poland, the Czech Republic, Great Britain, and Israel. He is anti-American, a power-hungry Chicago mobster, and communist.
How he got elected I do not know. His dreadful record was not secret, yet the Mass Media swooned over him.
(2) Indeed, the cultures of the American Indians were destroyed when the Spanish, English, Dutch, et al. came to the Americas. It was a blessing for the Indians, who had engaged in much warfare among themselves and got peace when the white man came. See Thomas Hobbes.
Yes, indeed. I wrote in October that Obama is a “millenarian without a plan,” but that single-party rule makes an actual plan unnecessary. (Please, I make a distinction between having goals – making Amerikkka a socialist nation – and having a plan to get it there.
Millenarianism is usually thought of as a religious ideology and it often is. But millenarianism does not have to be either religious or apocalyptic. There are secular-political millenarists who believe that human society may be brought to flourishing by properly enlightened human institutions. For example, in 1964, the general secretary of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union was Leonid Brezhnev. He promised that year that the USSR would achieve “true communism” by 1980. In Marxism-Leninism, true communism was a state in which material production was so great that all human needs were met without shortage. Greed would therefore disappear and the inherent but capitalist-suppressed natural nobility of men and women would emerge. They would be transformed into true communists – altruists who worked each day for the good of the people, not for crass, selfish profit. This was the doctrine of the “new communist man,” whose fallacies were fully exposed by Viktor Suvorov. And we know how Homo sovieticus turned out.
Political milleniarians believe that society is in deep need of profound change. This change must be compelled from the top because the people are either powerless to bring it about themselves or are too complacent or uninformed to effect it. The present order is corrupt and must be vanquished.
Millenarianists have an unbounded (and be honest, historically unjustified) faith in government and its ability to order the lives of the people better than they can order their own lives. Political or religious millenarians are always firmly authoritarian and use the power of government to cement the control of institutions and agencies over the daily lives of the people.Millenarianism always opposes personal freedom. Whether religious or secular, millenarianists have that much in common.
Brilliant! Exquisite! Abraham Lincoln would have been proud to have written this piece.
Merry Christmas!
A Merry Christmas to you and your family, Dr. Hanson – to Pajamas Media and to all the commentators, and a Much Happier 2010 to you all.
#42 Bilgeman:
You’re probably right; that concept would have been too devious for either party to figure out.
On a different skew, I don’t believe the left is prepared for the crap storm that’s comin’; my fervent prayer is that Senators and Representatives are scared to show their face in their home areas. What’s the phrase? You can never go home again? Seems to fit this situation.
Oops – sorry, the correct link to Viktor Suvorov’s explanation of the fallacies of planned economies is here.
Coincidence it may be, but we are hearing far more discussion of the men who founded this country and their principles than any of ever heard in (gack) school. High time, too.
I once had–and really, really needed–Tom Paine’s words about ‘the times that try men’s souls’ posted where I could always see them. As it turned out, the ‘good guys’ won, although there was a price to pay.
2010 is going to be like that. We have marvelous companions, past and present, and I for one look forward to it.
I’m always amused when I read about Obama’s overwhelming
charisma. He really doesn’t have any. Obama is one of
the most boring speakers I have ever heard. He says nothing,
has absolutely zero sense of humor and is clueless without
his teleprompter (really at times it is embarassing to watch
the unscripted Obama). Obama doesn’t seem to have any
command of details and even the most casual observer has to
admit you can’t believe ANYTHING he says.
The country wasn’t under his spell last fall. There just wasn’t
much to choose from. How much of a political genius does it
take to defeat Hillary Clinton or John McCain? At the end
of a Presidential cycle someone has to win. Many times
the last man standing is truly unimpressive which last
fall happened to be Obama (also see Carter, Johnson,
Buchanan, Hoover etc.).
Public opinion hasn’t thrown Obama overboard yet, not because
the public is so enchanted with him but due to the realization
that we’re stuck with him for the next three years no matter
what happens. Nobody is wishing for him to make a huge mess
of everything (which appears ever more likely) and many are
still unwilling to admit to themselves that the situation is
hopeless.
If current trends continue, Obama will go down as one of
the most reviled political figures in American history.
I think people were already pissed off in ’08 and many stayed home, unable to deal with two bad choices for President. Now the blinds are off and we see the menacing Democratic political machine in all of its ugliness. Some of us saw these people for decades in their rise to power but frankly many in the conservative and independent side were just too fat and happy to see the threat. Now you all know it, and are getting to know it well.
This won’t be changed just at the ballot box. The Democratic Government/Academia/Media complex has to be eliminated at the root.
When the ship levels itself, and it will, the ancient laws of Talion require that the left and their enclaves be treated to the same brutality that Obama & Co. are meting out to our nation. Ruthlessly remove the food from the bulging troughs at which the useless Left feeds. Starve the entrenched machinery of their unearned funds. Drastically cut taxes, and without qualm crush the nearly infinite Federal and State Bureaus of This and Departments of That.
Their sinecures and privileges must be shattered. It is THEY who have showed the rest how to govern for the foreseeable future, and it ain’t pretty, but neither is war. Sometimes it’s necessary to take the gloves off and punch as hard as possible, and after the debacle of Obama, that time is near.
If anyone needs a refresher course in the horror that was the French Revolution, they should consult The French Revolution”by contemporary historian Hippolite Taine, available online courtesy of the Gutenberg Project. Really illuminates the idea of “Liberte, Egalite, and Fraternite’.
Another commenter said, “November can’t come fast enough for our great country.”
Obviously, I understand your useage of that line, but it scares me terribly that you may be literally and specifically correct in saying that. It may turn out that November, 2010, does not come fast enough for our great country.
Taxation without representation for 4 years! Before 1 person gets obamacare.
Anyone for Tea?
Merry Christmas, VDH.
I hope the coming year finds you and yours in perfect health, prosperity and happiness.
As for the NY Times, academia, and Hollywood not caring about putting out inferior product, the answer remains the same in all instances.
It’s not about the product, it’s about the by-product.
(one quibble, I think liberals are absolutely fine, upstanding, reasonable folks, I just don’t think they exist in large measure, the leftists ate them whole)
When leftism dominates the cultural landscape, it first strangles the truth, then crushes dissent, and finally murders the remaining dissenters.
A liberal is more than happy to weigh issues and come to compromise. A leftist has no need to hear “the other side”, because nothing that is said, no fact presented, no objective truth…is of the slightest consequence.
When objective truth is not the object, the subject, the major premise, the minor premise or any part of the syllogism…then what the masses think, the poll numbers, the hurtling toward bankruptcy (financial and moral)…is of little moment.
Apply this to EVERY current event circumstance and EVERY pop culture weigh station, where the lemmings go to slop at the trough of premasticated opinions.
In legacy media, the tilted, slanted, fun house mirror…distorting facts, bending to leftist whim…is so brazen, so naked, that no serious seeker of objectivity would bother. The crushing emptiness in the shell that remains, is there for the echolalia, a sort of hippie autism.
Academia is not about expanding minds and exploring all sides of an issue, but finding peer pressure points, acupuncture of the soul.
Hollywood is legendary for infidelity and rehab recidivists lecturing the “little people” on how to live. Their flirtations with every treason is matched only by their closed door society for a differing opinion.
And the modus operandi is precisely the same. Distort the truth, crush dissent, wipe out any differing voice.
Everything else…is a con game. And we…are the marks.
Liberty or death,……….we are heading, full circle, it appears. Then Brits, now brats.
Merry Christmas to all!
41. Mike, that would be 12/31 of next year. We still have one more year before the tax rates return to Clinton-era levels, barring legislation to the contrary (of course the health care bill is such legislation, but the levy it imposes is separate from the income tax).
Remember who Obama’s associates were in his past. Alinsky, Ayers et. al. All sworn enemies to the American way of governance.
Google Cloward-Piven Strategy, and look at everything this administration has done through that filter, and it all becomes crystal clear.
Mark my words, people, 2010 will be epic in how universally bad things will get, and I firmly believe that Obama wants it to happen, for he will not be able to do what he really wants to do until things totally and completely fall apart.
Merry Christmas everyone! (even the trolls)
Donald,
It was Khrushev who promised in 1961 to build communism in 20 years (i.e. by 1980), not Brezhnev. In 1980 there was a joke that instead of communism we got the Olympic Games.
As I remember, he said: “Our generation will live in communism”. Sound like Obama, doesn’t it? Except Khrushev freed million from the concentration camps, and gave rights to Russian peasants.
As I stated before, we owe it to ourselves, our forerunners and our posterity to give the ballot box one more chance, but if they run roughshod over us, either by canceling the elections, by stealing them, or by ignoring the results, then it’s war. “Is life so precious, is peace so sweet, that it is to be purchased at the price of chains and slavery? Nay, I know not what course others may take, but as for me, give me liberty or give me death.”
The expected victory for President Obama’s top domestic priority, the Senate bill would constitute a positive change of historic proportions. The legislation, according to the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office, would extend health insurance to more than 30 million Americans currently lacking coverage while reducing the federal deficit.
Merry Christmas, Dr. Hanson.
I never thought to end 2009 as a fellow-traveler of Ayn Rand, but I’m beginning to look for John Galt.
Here you go – http://www.Indoctrinate-U.com
I’m curious who the “true believers” are. Does even Obama believe in what he is doing?
My impression is that the Democratic leadership is attempting to turn the entire country into a Democratic machine.
Everything else is rationalization and window dressing.
An accurate and somewhat depressing piece. I’m more optimistic about the current state of play because Obama, Reid, Pelosi, etc have now revealed clearly their strategy to move this country to the far left. We will have to unwind some things a bit later, but this country is center-right and ticked off. I doubt if most Americans will forget this period and it will be a long time before voters allow these circumstances to arise again, and this includes young people as well. Merry Christmas all.
There are rumors that the Obama administration will be compelled to postpone its healthcare agenda until February! If this report is accurate—then the bill is effectively dead. Harry Reid is wasting his time with the vote scheduled later this evening. I have been saying for roughly the last seven months that Obama is a marginalized president unable to get any of his major domestic bills through both houses of Congress. There were a number of scary moments, but it looks like his goose is finally cooked. We now have to worry about Obama getting revenge on the citizens for their betrayal.
Obama makes me think of the grinch and I see termites in his smile…He is a nobody and was put there by a group of people that are running the show, a bunch of frustreded old atheist Jewsih Marxists. Obama comes from the street and when he cannot deliver anymore, they will get ride of him. It is money my friends, trillions of dollars can make a mediocer nobody from Chicago a President of the US. God Save America!
There are simple ways to solve the problems created by statism.
1) Elect a president who will use the line veto. The president will reduce funding to all agencies that enforce administration fiat regulations so they cannot function. Only regulations with the force of legislative action should be enforced. Send the bureaucrats home.
2) License physician assistants and nurse practitioners to practice medicine.
3) Pay off the national debt by inflating the dollar and using every last saved dollar to do so until the debt is gone.
4) Remove the shield against personal liability from corporation officers so corporate malfeasance will amount to tort cases.
5) Revise the court system so that it is empowered to enforce the law and revise sentencing guidelines to emphasize monetary settlements rather than prison time. In Biblical terms, require a hefty fine for stealing – principle plus 20 percent or perhaps twice the principle. If that requires servitude to pay off the debt, so be it. As in the Madoff case, all personal property of the thief becomes subject to disbursement to the victims.
It is a start!
#21 Punkindrublic:
Yes: “America is at that awkward stage. It’s too late to work within the system, but too early to shoot the bastards.” But the author of those words is not anonymous, because those are the opening lines of “101 Things To Do ‘Til The Revolution” by Claire Wolfe.
Prof. Hanson:
One of your best columns. Thanks!
“…minimizing the nature of the wrong…” – Now and Then
You mean like the way you are minimizing the wrong of $2,000,000,000,000 deficits? Like the way you are minimizing the theft of $6,000,000,000,000 from US citizens to be handed out to the Obama favored? Like the way you are minimizing Reid’s purchase of democrat votes using tax payer money for a bill that is guaranteed to make people’s health FAR worse than it currently is?
You are wrong that it’s about “than greedy or conniving or lucky”. The greedy and conniving in the government especially the federal government put all the institutions at their disposal to get more money and power for themselves. Each year congress spends more money, our money, to enrich themselves and to buy votes, while doing as little actual governance as possible. The was to handle the greedy and conniving is to give them as little authority as possible.
As for the lucky, we should be happy that at least some of us see their dreams come true instead of codifying jealousy and envy into our national laws (which seems to be the very purpose of the left).
You may lament the wealth of Bill Gates, but why don’t you lament the power of Reid, Pelosi, or Obama? Have you read the constitution? Can you tell me where it gives the federal government the power to pass a cap and trade, stimulus, or health care bill? I can tell where it explicitly says the federal government CANNOT (the ninth and tenth amendment by the way).
The federal government cannot fix the “wrongs” you talk about because those “wrongs” exist in all of us, especially the political class.
In short you are a fool.
Suck it,
Ken
The body politic will ultimately cough this hairball up. The only question is how much it will suffer before doing so.
The perfect answer is right here:

I come back here late in the evening, after posting at the MSM all day, and getting censored every time, state-side and across the pond.
Merry Christmas, all.
Obama’s March Thru D.C.
(To the Tune Of “Marching Through Georgia”)
Sound the tocsin loud and clear
We must repel their thrust
Our enemies have now revealed
The truth to our disgust
So we fight and smite them
With a power most august
As we go marching thru D.C.
Chorus:
Hurra Hurra We’ll bind them up in Torts
Hurra Hurra We’ll beat them in the Courts
We’ll sue them in the local
And the state and federal too
As We go marching thru D.C.
Now We’ve won We’ll really show
The people we despise
How we act towards those who lost
Out on our fair prize
We’ll harrass them with some law suits
And them falsely diabolize
As we go marching to D.C.
Chorus:
Hurra Hurra We’ll bind them up in Torts
Hurra Hurra We’ll beat them in the Courts
We’ll sue them in the local
And the state and federal too
As We go marching thru D.C.
When we’ve settled in and packed
The courts to our content
Never shall the opposition
Fight our devilment
For we’ve got a strangle hold
On The Government
As we came marching to D.C.
Chorus:
Hurra Hurra We’ll bind them up in Torts
Hurra Hurra We’ll beat them in the Courts
We’ll sue them in the local
And the state and federal too
As We go marching thru D.C.

The Legislative Branch is crooked. The Executive Branch and it’s supplicant Federal Bureaucracy are crooked. The Judicial Branch is crooked and the Supreme Court is about to be packed. The only straight thing remaining in the government of this Republic is its Constitution. Hopefully when the dust settles there will be someone left alive who can read what it says and discern the Spirit of its intent. Thinking ahead to Christmas 2010: Merry Christmas to all Then and Now!
49 Now and Then
Are you claiming the everyone who is not a Conservative is morally pure?
Thomas Jefferson said: “I predict future happiness for Americans if they can prevent the government from wasting the labors of the people under the pretense of taking care of them.” It seems we have failed. Not only have we not prevented it, we –or, that is, enough of us– actively promoted this unhappy result by voting these monsters into office. We are the foolish people, full of ignorance and delusion. No one was ever going to be able to take our liberty away; it could only be surrendered. And we started doing that awhile ago.
Donald Sensing @ 51, that planners inevitability become tyrants, Hayek covered as:
A national emergency such as war or financial collapse “forces national planning”.
To permit total mobilization of your country’s economy, you gladly surrender many freedoms. You know regimentation was forced by your country’s national emergency.
Arguments for “production boards” and “planning commissions” are heard long before the ‘national emergency’ stabilizes or ends.
The “planners” promise utopias to all the ‘categories’ of people and industry are promised something good –a plan for farmers sounds good to farmers, the plan for heavy industry sounds good to unions, and so forth. So, many new “planners” are elected to office.
But they can’t agree on ONE utopia, so soon enough the emergency unity is gone. The “planners” argue but seem to be unable to come to compromise agreements. Factions form around pet plans, and soon citizens can’t agree either.
When the “planners” –much later after much confusion and many secret closed door meetings –finally patch up a provisional or temporary or working plan, citizens in
turn disagree on the elements. What the farmer likes, the factory worker doesn’t, and so on, inevitably and seemingly indefinitely.
“Planners” hate to force agreement (Hayek thought most “national planners” are well-meaning idealists and balk at any use of force), so they hope for some miracle of public agreement to their patchwork plan.
They try to ‘sell’ the plan to ‘the nation’. They create a propaganda machine (which the coming dictator will find handy) and begin to try to build a political rather than a national, or ‘felt’, agreement.
Meanwhile, growing national confusion leads to protest meetings. Fiery populist orators emerge, and form a party of those who have never before been interested or active in politics.
Confidence in “planners” fades. The more “planners” improvise, the greater the disturbance to the well-remembered recent pre-planner normalcy. Everybody suffers. People now feel —rightly —that “planners can’t get things done.”
So in desperation, a “strong man” is given power and “planners” authorize the new leader to hammer out a new plan which includes some way of forcing obedience (later, they’ll take back the enabling power –so they think).
The party takes over the country. By now, confusion is so great that obedience to the new leader must be obtained at all costs. Maybe you join the party yourself to aid national unity.
A ‘negative aim’ begins welding party unity. The early move of all dictators is to inflame the majority in common cause against some scapegoat minority (such as in Nazi Germany where the negative aim was at first to institutionalize anti-Semitism, then with building power became “why not just kill the Jews?”).
No one opposes the leader’s plans. The new secret police are ruthless. Ability to force obedience becomes the No. 1 virtue in the “planned state” and all freedom is now gone.
Anything you do can now be ‘denounced’ as crime against the state. Thus ends the road to serfdom.
I had a student like Barack Obama once. He was a football player, so he was always missing my Friday homework quizzes. As I do with any of my students who needs it, I arranged for him to come to office hours on Thursday and take the quiz in advance. The quizzes consisted entirely of problems from the homework. Every time he showed up to take the quiz, I’d ask him if he had any questions about the homework before he took the quiz, and he’d say no. And he’d fail the quiz. It was pretty clear that he wasn’t doing his homework.
I always answered homework questions for about 10 minutes on Fridays before the quiz, and it happened one week that someone asked about the problem that was on the quiz, so I went over it before the quiz. So when my football player got his quiz back with yet another F on it, he decided to dispute his grade on the grounds that I had solved this problem in class on a day when football did not allow him to attend, and therefore he was being discriminated against for being a football player. He freely admitted that he didn’t know how to do the problem, but expected full credit anyway. I told him that if he had done his homework and he didn’t know how to solve that problem or any other, he could have asked me about it before he took the quiz in my office, but he chose not to.
When he asked for the points, he was pouring on the charm, clearly expecting that his charm and his thin argument would get him the points (which were not enough to change his grade from an F). When he found out I wasn’t moved and was going to enforce the policies I’d put on the syllabus, he quickly turned nasty. And after that I got called into the assistant department head’s office to explain why the athletic director had gotten a report from one of his football players that I was discriminating against him.
Anyway, Barack Obama reminds me of him.
Thank you, Doctor, for the clarity you provide through your words. Merry Christmas and have a safe and happy 2010.
For months now, even the most sphisticated analysts and commentators have been incredulously shaking their heads at the antics of congress. They say over and over, “what in the world do these people think they are doing? Have they no shame? Don’t they see they will be thrown out of office next election?” It’s the biggest background ‘deep story’ in the country.
What the Dems are intentionally creating such a high level of disgust with a congress that is clearly and obviously and delightedly quickly destroying the nation thru debt and Dollar dilution and indentity-group factional angers, because they want the public to see a need for a leader to take control and put a stop to congress’s rampage –and “save us before it’s too late” ?
#16 Delia wrote: “Yikes.

Oh how I pray.

Tom Coburn prayed for Senator Robert Byrd to die so he couldn’t make the vote. God doesn’t hear those kind of prayers. In fact, if God didn’t want health care reform if wouldn’t be happening. So while you may be praying what makes you think that God will fulfill your request? I pray too, but in my case God heard my prayers.
Thank you Dr. Hanson and a very Merry Christmas to you as well. Keep on writing as you and the other bloggers on PJ Media have done a fantastic job for us and it is greatly appreciated.
We’re going to put an end to the mess-making and then do a thorough job of cleaning it up. Novemeber can’t get here fast enough for me as well.
merry christmas victor.
thank you for saying what countless would like to, but cannot.
I often wonder what makes the socialist mind tick. Are they missing the inquisitive, adventurous, risk taking part of the brain that opens different and wonderful avenues of exploration?
It seems their genetic make up resembles that of ants that are programmed to unthinkingly follow the sent trails of the ones in front. They only work well in groups, shunning individuality because it doesn’t offer the security they need to survive. Most work in dead jobs that control every aspect of their work, government, that produces only regulations and the iron rice bowl/steel grocery cart security they need to survive in life. They go from one teat to another and spend their whole lives as dependants in society. Sad little people continually trying to cover up their own inadequacies in life by restricting others.
These people do not have lives, they only exist. It must be a horrible feeling when they die knowing that they are nothing and have accomplished nothing on this earth. The only thing they are capable of leaving behind is their offspring, insects do that as well.
#52 Theo Goodwin wrote: “Brilliant! Exquisite! Abraham Lincoln would have been proud to have written this piece.”
Actually, one of Lincoln’s most famous quotes is, “What is this conservatism? Is it not adherence to the old and tried against the new and untried?
The contemporary GOP left the party of Lincoln long, long ago. Were he alive today he would likely be a Democrat.
Ditto to poster #32.
We will all persevere in 2010 and beyond. Stay strong, everyone. We will continue to speak out and fight. Do not stay discouraged.
Tomorrow is a new day, and Christmas eve, at that. Merry Christmas to all (EXCEPT the trolls…sorry, my spirit is not as generous as poster #67).
Thank you for this and your many other interesting columns. Cheer up! It has to get better because it cannot get much worse!
80. Ken:
My comment was on the nature of disingenuous moralizing of conservatives. To your credit, you did not deny it. Nor did I disavow similar behavior on the left. That’s the difference between you and me; I can admit culpability on both sides, but you are incapable of taking accountability for the conservatives’ role. You have become so enamored with plausible deniability that you don’t know how to take responsibility.
Case in point: Bush ran away on january 20 leaving $1.2 trillion in debt, and yet you prefer to suggest it’s all Obama’s doing. It’s simply not true. But you don’t care, because you don’t like Obama and so you will purposefully misrepresent the truth to make yourself feel exonerated from your identical sins in the past. You have no interest in the health and progress of this great nation. You only care about demonizing the “opposition.”
You have no reason whatsoever to claim a guarantee as to the negative performance of the healthcare bill if passed. You hail CBO numbers as “the gold standard” and proof of a healthcare bill’s demise when the CBO is unfavorable to Democrats. And yet when the CBO issues a report supporting the positive deficit impact, you dismiss their numbers as partisan hackery.
In fact, there is as much credence to the theory that the only reason Republicans are fighting as hard as they are is because they know that all their histrionic fear mongering about death panels and rationing are wrong – that healthcare reform will, in fact, improve care in this nation. When that happens, they will rightfully appear foolish and partisan and divisive – driven only by ideological infatuation and a lust for lost power. And so their only choice is to kill it before it becomes law – before the American people see the benefits
I don’t lament Bill Gates. He is an example of genuine entrepreneurship that drives innovation and creating big chunks of positive economic influence. And I don’t lament the power of Obama and Reid and Pelosi and more than you lamented the power of Bush and Delay and Hastert and Lott and Delay (two driven from office in scandal – one sex and one race, and a third indicted, so there’s that.)
I don’t believe that the agenda of Obama and Reid and Pelosi agenda is to destroy America. i find that patently ridiculous. Shock at buying votes? You remind me of Claude Rains in Casablanca shutting down Rick’s casino. You have no standing on the morals of the issue, so you must posture to save face and direct blame away from your own complicity.
As to your final assertion, that “those wrongs exist in all of us” I find that particularly loathsome. I know many people who have risen above the lowest common denominator represented by our politicians. I count myself among that group. The fact that you don’t may be the most telling admission of all.
Finally, as to finding some guy to suck you, I’m afraid you’ll have to flatter someone else, someone who shares your . . . preferences. Perhaps a trip to the men’s room at the Minneapolis Airport. I here it’s THE place for good family values adventures.
Excellent post, Dr. Hanson.
You touched on a point that has been occupying me for a while. Up until recently the actions of Obama were both confusing and infuriating to me. I was angered by his arrogant flexing of power and profligate spending, while simultaneously baffled by the seeming self-destructive behavior evidenced by plummeting poll numbers.
Lately, however, I find myself more amused by the spectacle than either angered or confused. Obama’s dysfunctional behavior is exactly what is needed at this point in our history. It’s a bit of a cliche that humans learn much more from our failures than our successes. The failure we are going to experience this time around is going to be catastrophic, and hence, extremely instructive. Like the lesson we learned with Carter, Americans will remember our error and the consequences of electing Obama for a generation or more.
So, I say to Obama, “Have at it. Do your worst.” I have faith the republic will survive. Yes, the coming days will be very painful, but the recovery afterward will be strong and lasting.
Texas is Galt’s Gulch.
God Bless you Sir, God Bless, one can one imagine the slings and arrows you receive for speaking the truth so forcefully..
Praetorian, your comment is laughable to anyone who knows anything at all about what the Democrat party –the one in the North –did to Lincoln and the Union war effort. look up ‘copperheads’, ‘draft riots’, ‘election of 1864′ (Democrats ran on what amounted to a pro-Confederate platform). that’s just for starters, you could also search ‘Lincoln’s cabinet’ and see how the long-time practice of striving to cool election tempers by inviting cabinet secretaries from the other party, blew up in Lincoln’s face when the war created anti-Lincoln opportunities for the Democrats to exploit from inside the White House –opportunities which alas the Democratic party was unable to resist, even tho the nation was locked in mortal combat and needed a president unvexed by domestic plotting and scheming against the best execution of his wartime duty. Needed, but –thanks to the Democrats –couldn’t have.
So in other words, we’re done.
I never thought it could happen in my lifetime (I’m 52), but now I am fairly certain it will: the breaking up of the USA, and get this, within 2 generations of defeating communism.
Fiscal irresponsibility, large scale immigration by the poor/unskilled/semi-literate (mostly of the same ethnic-linguistic-cultural faction), and a loss in confidence as to the superiority of our culture will doom us. I give our country 25 years, at most, absent a tremendous awakening of our people.
Running a great country is, believe it or not, very similar to running a small business — and I am a small business owner — a half dozen stupid decisions made in quick succession will sink your business. To think a great country cannot be destroyed just as fast is the height of stupidity, hubris, or both.
Brilliant piece. I am not as pessimistic as you. Truth has a way of coming out eventually. The election of Barry was a triumph of naive hope over reality. He will go down as one of the greatest embarrassments in U.S. history. The U.S. and Europe desperately need a major swing towards traditional conservatism. With a little luck phoneys like Barry and idiots like Brown will propel that swing. Happy Christmas and God Bless America.
Merry Christmas, Dr. Hanson. Retreat to the beautiful country for awhile, it will clear the mind and cleanse the soul.
No. 76 Palinista is entirely correct with the caveat that the Old Europe moldy monarchies and Rothschild & Co. are itching to re-colonize the New World and Barry is their front man.
No. 96 Praetorian has obviously been hitting the Christmas hooch and has his drunk glasses on. But Merry Christmas anyway.
God Save Us All.
oops, emphasis error, pls read only the penultimate sentence’s first italcized word, ‘needed’, as italicized.
Victor Davis Hanson: he knows he’s looking at a pile of crap, but hasn’t the foggiest clue how it got there.
I enjoyed your description of the mess that Obama is making, but your analysis! Oy! To make up for your lack of any real insight, you trot out all the typical things you despise — multiculturalism, socialism, etc., and you say, “See!” No, I don’t see.
Shorter VDH: “I hate this, and I hate that, so this must be caused by that!”
Praetorian -
“Were (lincoln) alive today he would likely be a Democrat.”
–
As Mr. Lincoln and his son walked the streets of Richmond, one group of newly freed slaves cried out, “Glory Hallelujah!”, and fell to their knees before Mr. Lincoln. It was here the President paused, and motioned for them to rise. “Don’t kneel to me,” he told them, “You must kneel only to God, and thank him for your freedom. Liberty is your birthright. God gave it to you as he gave it to others, and it is a sin that you have been deprived of it for so many years.”
–
Democrat, my (hindquarters).
95, glass, your words distilled for me what’s most fascinating about the mess the Obama followers have put this country in. Which
is the people who march to the beat of the leftist, socialist, collectivist, communist drum.
What makes them tick. That is two and a half trillion dollar question. And until I can satisfactorily answer that, I feel I can’t with certainty create the words that touch the nerve in their brains that makes them jump with fear from the realization that we’re onto them.
Although I do despise them, and that includes every troll who utters a discouraging word in our presence, I don’t condemn the puke Democratic mob of anything more than reckless stupidity. Except for maybe the smartest ones like Schumer and Obama, and hapless Harry Reid. They, I believe, have the requisite scienter to be judged guilty of intentional high crimes.
And while it may be true that the highest Democratic leadership intentionally brings aid and comfort to the enemy as they go about the dismantling of America, still I don’t think it’s in their nature (the schumers, obamas and reids) to take up arms against innocent Americans and snuff out lives with sordid glee.
Osama Bin Laden, though, is a horse of a different color. If his big head were in the sights of my scoped M-14, on a held breath, between heart beats, I could squeeze the trigger with the ease of shooting a rabid dog about to attack a child.
But what is the x factor that turns progressive politicians into rabid decision makers? Is it greed? Childhood anger acted out because when sides were chosen they were always chosen last? Or, to put a topical, timely spin on the question, is the problem as simple as an undigested bit of beef, a blot of mustard, a crumb of cheese, a fragment of underdone potato?
How does Obama lie through his teeth day in and day out and still fall asleep without needing 10mg of ambien to help him forgot what a miserable creature he’s become? As I write, though I have no definitive answer to “what makes them tick,”I do find myself moving to the edge of uncontrollable anger such that I’m the one in need of the ambien before I can lose this razor sharp antipathy for everything the three aforementioned Democratic misfits stand for.
What do they have in common? Well, they all use their wits to make as much money as they can stuff their bank accounts full of. Is this it? Is it simply how people like this put food on their tables and Porche’s in their garages? Is it simply how they make their living? AIG bigwigs get bonuses. Maybe Obama and his inner circle look upon the work of dirty filthy rich politics as the means not just to a socialist America, but to a rich, secure life after politics.
All of this is still speculation. The question remains what makes them tick. Or more precisely. What caused their patriotic values train to jump the tracks? What was the switch that sent them hurtling down the lie-paved path of red white and blue destruction? Has them pushing for a health overhaul that’s really a declaration of dependence, rather than independence?
Why are they so insistent on screwing this country up? I honestly want to know.
Merry Christmas to you, too, Dr. Hanson!
The modern American left’s basic problem is a misunderstanding of what makes totalitarian statism possible. This is why despite some rather dire observations by VDH and other very worried luminaries of the right I remain guardedly optimistic.
The absolute key to totalitarian power is the monopoly use of force. Without this the Statist totalitarian has no hope of success. The wisdom of our founders is now abundantly clear in the enshrinement of the 2nd amendment. In order to obtain a monopoly or near monopoly use of force the statist would have to be reasonably assured they could count on either the US Military or the local police forces of the US to support them in a usurpation of power.
Thankfully our current crop of leftist elites have done their level best to alienate both groups to a point where I very much doubt they could count on the support of either. I am reasonably sure they could not count on enough support of either to either dissolve the electoral cycle or compel anti-constitution obedience.
This is a good thing because while change will be expensive and these mistakes will be painful to the country it doesn’t appear their cost will be so great as to require blood to correct them, or put the overall existence of the country at stake to correct them.
The biggest mistake the left made which is relatively common for them is the assumption that the salutary neglect with which the bulk of America tended to view politics could be sustained in the face of a massive assault on prosperity. America woke up looked around threw one party, not necessarily to blame but convenient, out of power and will happily do so again before returning to it’s slumber. Americans in truth ask and expect very little of their leaders. When they feel that trust is breached they respond violently. What they expect is prosperity at home and respect abroad. The statist agenda yields neither. So the modern leftist totalitarian will be frustrated without exactly knowing why. It is likely in a generation he may have a better shot but now he is doomed completely.
This truism makes my Holidays bright.

Good old fashioned Jew hating ain’t gonna win you any elections. It’s gonna be a rough eight years for you people.
I have a couple of quotes I would like to share which are profound pieces of wisdom (IMHO, of course) with regard to Dr. Hanson’s article.
“You cannot strengthen the weak by weakening the strong. You cannot help small men by tearing down big men. You cannot help the poor by destroying the rich. You cannot lift the wage earner by pulling down the wage payer. You cannot keep out of trouble by spending more than your income. You cannot further the brotherhood of man by inciting class hatreds. You cannot establish security on borrowed money. You cannot build character and courage by taking away a man’s initiative and independence. You cannot help men permanently by doing for them what they could and should do for themselves.”– William J. H. Boetcker (This quote is often misattributed to Abe Lincoln.)
“Of all tyrannies a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of its victim may be the most oppressive. It may be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron’s cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated, but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience.”–C.S. Lewis
^^^Are these quotes not wise and illustrative of what the Dems are trying to accomplish?
Merry Christmas

questioning Obama’s antiamericanism and worldwide illusions
Thank you Mr. Hanson, for everything you’ve done for me peersonally (the education).
I’m sure the a countless people like me who can’t vote, for I am a legal immigrant, but not a US citizen.
I am angry in what I observe, seen this all before; and want to add one thing though: Barack, and Michelle a filled with rage towards white americans, and those black americans who do not follow their logic.
Hate causes to be irrational; everything he does is also out of spite!
Brilliant analysis. Perhaps there is one other part. Obama is truly the “man without a country,” having learned well the lessons he was taught by the statist progressives who schooled him, funded him, and pushed him forward as their figurehead. This plays out in his near-perfect disconnect from the lives, concerns, and values of ordinary Americans and in his endless willingness to suck up to tyrants abroad (so long as doing so bashes America in some way).
“Enantiodromia is a warning against extreme conscious attitudes which inevitably get compensated by our Shadow.”
http://ionadove.blogspot.com/2009/03/enantiodromia-credo-lviii.html
There is little question that an intense polarization in the body politic has been developing for decades. Indeed, the entire 20th century could be looked at in this light with only half measures being taken to resolve the conflict. The Second World War came the closest to defining human reality but was derailed at the last minute by the establishment of the United Nations.
The reality of Evil is a problem that only briefly surfaces before it’s existence is rationalized away “until the next time”. In the case of the 9/11 attack, the memory of this heinous crime and the utter insanity of the perpetrators has already faded and the very methods that have prevented a recurrence are even now being dismantled while the public’s attention is diverted to domestic policy issues.
While the dismantling of the best health care system in the world by a cadre of statist’s is cause for alarm, the awareness of the real threat is being diminished on a daily basis for purely political ends. This is a precursor to disaster and the cry, “we were attacked” is destined to be repeated until the threat becomes so obvious to everyone that our very survival becomes paramount.
Obama shows every sign of being the most incompetent leader in the history of the country at a time of the greatest peril to not just the United States but for the entire world.
If there was ever an “interesting time” to be living in, this it.
Victor, I hoped you would have a last post before CHRISTmas! Merry Christmas to you, your family and all of my poster friends who watch for your writings with great anticipation.
We are going to be ok. We are patiently waiting for our representatives to do the right thing as is proper in a Republic such as ours. We will try to cure their insane laws with forthright communication and at the ballot box. If they disregard us and find ways to subvert our country, we will take peaceful measures to strangle their ability to govern.
They do not own us, they are not smarter than us, they will not prevail.
Many of us have been seeing to our farms, our businesses, our local schools, our youth sports, our gardens, hobbies, our Churches, our family and friends.
Now, they have our full attention and the Republic is now first. We will not be ignored, we will not fail. God bless you and all of your readers. We begin in 2010.
Your essay is a great start at analyzing the Liberal Experiment with Society, but to describe the entire agenda might take over 2,000 pages.
One or more people should take a hard look at describing the Liberal Experiment with Society and describe the entire agenda.
This is the first time that they have total control (or almost if we let them).
But I will leave that Herculean effort to conservative academicians. I do part of my part by just voting a straight Republican ticket.
Part of the anger that we see at the Tea Parties and in ordinary people on the street has to do with the fact that they are realizing that we do not have a system of checks and balances. The Republicans got out of control when they ran things because they accurately understood just how crazy the Democrats are and they accurately did not think that the American people would ever want the Democrat agenda.
Unfortunately, most Americans do not follow politics all that closely and thought that the Republicans’ dire warnings were merely political hype. Now the majority of Americans are sadder but wiser. The problem is that there is still no way to keep Republicans under control when the only political alternative is progressive fascism.
David Thomson’s (#75) usually sound opinions notwithstanding, you fantasize if you think the purposely dumbed down indolent American public (including illegals) will “rise up”. It IS way too late!
I’ve been around a long time and since the 1950s I’ve suffered the smug and sneering American public’s derisions of the jeremiads of groups of good citizens and of individual good citizens, including myself, telling in clear and terrible terms of the calamities it was breeeding with its cynical and corrupt “progressivism”.
By “American public” I include so-called Republicans and Conservatives.
As America enters what looks like this hemisphere’s 70 year desert of Sovietism I’ve moved from Libertarianism to Anarchism, and I relish seeing you finally pulling the excrement down over your heads. It’s deserved.
Gone Galt.
In case you haven’t noticed…there are no excuses anymore..you need to dismantle this sh*t or else.
The best and only human solution to all of this Liberalism is for Christians to remain steadfast, and focus on strong families, bound together by traditional Biblical Christianity. Learn about Creation and Noah’s Ark. Learn about Christian apologetics, and know what the Gospels actually say. The Liberals have a foothold in Christian’s ignorance, and guilt (alleged of all Christianity).
This is a pretty good site (Pajamas Media), but every time I find something that seems pretty smart, or at least anti-Liberal I will see them endorse Evolution, millions of years of earth history, or an allegorical Bible. This is shooting yourselves in the foot. Evolution (molecules-to-man) is the Liberal’s Genesis. (If you didn’t understand that I meant molecules-to-man when referring to evolution since the beginning of this it proves you need to research the topic.)

Great piece Doc, Race/ Gender/Class, has always been the number one play from the liberal playbook.Jesse Jackson, Rev wright Louis Farrakhan Bill Ayers ect ( all from Chicago and Obama mentors) have used this to enrich themselves and bolster their image. For years these Chicago hustlers and con men tried to bring this nation wide with Jackson’s run for the presidency but was always rejected. Then Obama comes along and can sell this like no one else.If anyone wants to see the destruction these people have created using race/gender/class as the catalyst for their agenda’s, go into the neighborhoods where they espouse this garbage. This is really the Chicago way,but they have a great image
Merry Christmas to you Professor Hanson. It is always a privilege to read your posts. May you and your family have a healthy and prosperous New Year.
It is time to stampede the sheep. And that will best happen if our people learn who their enemy is and who is behind all this. I find it helps tremendously to get the well-documented book by Perloff into the hands of the large number of American people who are rapidly becoming aware: The Shadows of Power, The Council On Foreign Relations And The American Decline.
Profound as always, Dr. H.
I’m reading biographies, in order, of all our presidents. I’m currently at Monroe. I believe our founders got it 99% correct. The one small error, which is proving our undoing, is constitutional term limits for the executive and legistlative branches. Maybe we could have used them judicially as well.
Clearly we’re seeing in Washington the work of the forces of evil (“our struggle is not against flesh and blood…”). At this stage our only hope is intervention by the Sovereign God, and I would encourage other Christians to pray without ceasing that He would intervene to return this great nation to Him.
“Maddest of all is seeing life as it is, rather than as it should be.”
The problem with Obama’s French-style New American Revolution is that, as in France, his revolution will end in a reign of terror and — instead of liberty — a totalitarian Emperor.
Today’s statist Democrats (talk about an oxymoron) want a king — or even an emperor or dictator.
Has Obama met a tyrant he disagrees with?
Brilliant….once again, Dr. Hanson. Thank you for exposing the tactics and lunacy of the left.
And, of course, a Merry Christmas to you and your family.
We are witnessing a quiet coup.
The reaction, when fully realized will be dramatic.
The unintended consequences of obamunism will be even more dramatic.
God save us all.
Merry Christmas

I have watched this trailer many times. I have cried a few of those times and I am a big, tough boy who’s not supposed to cry. But I have seen the future. If our collective ‘act of defiance’ does not come in the next ten months we are finished.
Watch the trailer, read the story, spread the word, not much time left.
Merry Christmas.

Dr. Hanson is a national treasure, and we don’t have nearly enough like him.
Should the Health Care Abomination be passed into law, our next peaceful recourse is to pressure our respective State legislatures to pass State laws declaring the federal law to be null and void within the borders of the State in question.
This has been done on a number of occasions, most recently in response to the pernicious effects of the Real ID law. This is not a theoretical exercise. You can rest assured that the Statists do not think their Health Care Abomination is theoretical.
“Law is often but the tyrant’s will, and always so when it violates the right of an individual.” — Thomas Jefferson
Merry Christmas, Happy Hanukkah!
Excellent article as usual, Dr. Hanson, and every week I thank God you’re on our side.
There are a few folks here who assume that Obama must be somehow willfully ignorant to be pushing ahead with issues that the majority of Americans are clearly against. You must not think that Obama is ignorant, for that only makes what he does more dangerous. You must understand that Obama knows EXACTLY what he is doing, and he’s doing it all on purpose.
Obama is intentionally stoking the fire and aggravating the anger of conservatives… he is willfully doing all he can to exacerbate the racial divide… he is doing all he can so We The People get so angry that we revolt and take to the streets. Only this way can Obama take control of the public via martial law. Conservatives are the enemy, and Obama will see that we are taken care of and our will suppressed.
Also, everyone here should read about Cloward-Piven… this strategy is set up so that the federal government is weighed down with economic responsibilities which will ultimately cause the government to fail. But obviously, the federal government is too big and important to fail, so teetering on full-on economic disaster will give Obama the latitude to seize private business and private property in order to find the capital to keep the federal government going. Slowly but surely, more and more private business and enterprise is coming under government control under Obama — and it’s only been 11 months! Just think of all the damage he can AND WILL do with three more years under his belt.
I honestly fear America is doomed. We are literally seeing the end of this great country, and when we finally revolt, we will be picked off by Obama’s government. It will be very ugly indeed.

Merry Christmas Doc, keep up the great work.
Lincoln the hawk would probably be an Independent such as today’s senator from Ct.
Lincoln also said to preserve the Union he would free all the slaves, or enslave all, or ship all back to Africa if he could. Though the slavery issue, because of the radicals on both sides, brought it to a fight, it was about preserving the Union versus States Rights and the balance of power in the federal govt.
Ron at 128 got it right, TERM LIMITS for all would make public servants and not politicians.
I loved this article. I was 7-11 years old when Carter was in office and 40 now. Those in there 20′s and 30′s don’t remember Carter and have had bought into the logic of central planning. Have a problem….banish it by decree. Markets don’t work in a moral way, self interest is not moral.
Lets raise the voting age to 38.

#49 NAT say: “…minimizing the nature of the wrong in order to defend it rather than fix it. It’s more than greedy or conniving or lucky . . . it’s the blatantly dishonest and very often criminal behavior that we’re addressing…”
This poor old sod NAT doesn’t seem to know that Ex-Congressperson Jefferson is already in prison. No need to “address” that one further. But the AG has much more work to do, e.g., Rangel, Dodd, Pelosi, Reid…damn near the entire Dem mafia, the culture of ongoing corruption. Oh, and waterboarding ain’t torture. We don’t torture our own military in training, though some of the training feels like torture. Right, NAT?
BTW, NAT, what about that MOS?
Merry Christmas, Happy New Year, Victor. Thanks for a year of great opinion pieces. The same good wishes to the rest of you fine people. The small-minded, the insincere, the wannabe spoilers, the passionate but thoughtless? I wish you a supersensitive, To hell with the lot of you.
Dr Hanson, in your essay, “The Origins of Obamism” you hit another home run!You commented …
Here’s what you might add in the future: Hence the line in the Health Care bill that virtually makes the bill impossible to reverse long after all the current Marxists are replaced with more future Marxists! Page 1020…. creates a Senate rule that makes it out of order to amend or even repeal the law.
The HC bill is but one example of this philosophy that makes the system superior to the person which drives the idea down the road further. These people are killing us and we will not die easily! They have made one big mistake. These people have mistaken kindness for weakness. We are not weak and the course of history that usually follows such tyranny is about to unfold! I’m happy to report for duty.
Merry Christmas. Keep chargin! You are the one solid source of sanity that we have!
129. Koblog – the possibility of the Obama experiment ending as badly as the French Revolution is real.
However, one wonders whether the military will support it if it comes to significant armed resistance to the left’s agenda. Is there a budding leftist with the talent of Napoleon out there in the officer corps? Without him, no 13 Vendémiaire stopping the Royalist insurrection, no 18 Brumaire and no empire. One suspects the dynamic in the US is very different.
Well, it’s all specutlation. The only thing that is sure is that things are going to get a whole lot worse before they get better – if they get better.
I think Obama wants to be a dictator, but Obama lacks the military accomplishments, or at least military connections, of almost all of history’s successful dictators. Can one really even imagine him in the company of Caesar or Augustus? Napoleon? Lenin? (where would he have been without Trotsky’s Red Army) Mao? Hitler? Mussolini?
99. Now and Then
Forgive me for intruding on your discussion but I am puzzled by your attitude. First, why are you hovering above second tier propositions such as an equal moral compass of discreet individuals within groups. Who but a sophomore assumes that all members of a group are equally moral (or live up to the group’s standards equally)? Surely by now you’ve clued into the fact that in any group there are some decent, sincere, fair-minded people and others who are more deceptive and manipulative? If that is the basis for your principle argument, then I’m sorry to have mistaken you for someone else. Either way it is beneath us here to waste time on such juvenalia.
Still, I must admit that it is refreshing to hear, after years of the likes of Howard Dean saying “I hate Republicans”, President Obama referring to us as “teabaggers”, Michael Moore calling us “haters”, Jimmy Carter “racists”, Nancy Pelosi “Nazis” and “Astroturf” etc etc. ad nauseum…to hear a man of the Left admit that the Left has at least an equal measure of opportunists and deceivers. And by implication, that not everyone on the Right is motivated by base instinct. That is quite rare. Thank you.
The second possibility is that you believe that the Conservative worldview itself is morally inferior to the modern liberal one. But here again I can’t quite bring myself to believe that, since you are obviously an intelligent person, and only a blind, self-deceiving fool, or an actualized sociopath could entertain such a view. And you don’t appear to be the former. (What I mean is that Obama-Pelosi-Reid and the rest of the current liberal elite’s brand of Socialism is really just a watered down version of the Authoritarian, Centralized, Bureaucratic, Freedom-Suppressing, All-Knowing Redistributive State that brutalized hundreds of millions of human lives in the 20th century, and led to vast poverty, despair, and a crushing of the human spirit, all in the name of Progress of course, but really in the name of vast wealth and power in the hands of a tiny, chosen elite. To not see that you must be blind, and to not hate it, you must…)
So let me ask the question that really puzzles me, though I do not expect an answer. How are you able to live with yourself? Seriously? I don’t mean that as an insult (you must be aware of what you are and so are unlikely to be offended by discussing it), or as an attempt to trap you in a “gotcha” kind of way. I’m sincerely interested in how your mind works. Specifically: do you really believe the things you write here? Do they really seem to you to be coherent arguments based on objective facts and rational analysis? Or are you aware of the elaborate misrepresentation, selective recall, single-frame induction and generalized ad-hominem (in the guise of thinly veiled disdain and hostility) – all of which are the hallmarks of someone arguing in pursuit of a given conclusion, rather than allowing the conclusion to flow naturally. And if that’s the case, do you simply not care? I ask this so that I may better understand myself.
Thanks in advance, and please feel free to answer any way you choose, any response will be instructive and I’d be happy to reciprocate.
Merry Christmas to all, and a special thanks to VDH for sharing his wisdom and courage.
#76 Governor Palin would loathe you using her name and spewing your hate. Maybe it’s acceptable on Daily Kos, but not on this Blog.

“On a different skew, I don’t believe the left is prepared for the crap storm that’s comin’; my fervent prayer is that Senators and Representatives are scared to show their face in their home areas. What’s the phrase? You can never go home again? Seems to fit this situation.”
I wish that that were the case. In fact, the Left is far more prepared to burrow in and survive the likely coming political tsunami.
When your “grunts” can make their nut in the untouchable permanent bureaucracy, your platoon and regimental officers in the (again subsidized), foundations, while your generals and admirals go to ground in (there’s that government teat again!), the halls of academia and media, you’re situated pretty well for a secondary and supplementary firing position, (as a Dragon missile and machine-gunner would put it).
Besides that, the Left has been out of direct electoral power for far longer than the Right, so they’ve had more time to line the bunker floor with plywood over pallets and sand-bag the walls.
As long as conservatives eschew the government activism necessary to not just undo the latest Moonbat outrage, but also the two or three Moonbat madnesses that preceded it, and that form the structural foundations for it’s survival and resurgence, then we will forever be “reactionary”…and that means ceding the initiative to the Transnational Progressive Statists.
If you’ve ever seen the explosion of plant growth in a desert after a rainstorm, it is a perfect metaphor for the dynamic of our domestic partisan politics.
Unfortunately, conservatives just don’t LIKE wielding government power to that extent…even when it is necessary to advance their agenda.
I guess we’d rather just make money and be left alone to enjoy it…us poor dumb bastards.
# 124 I think this episode of Star Trek http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZRIcUQYFMqU more accurately reflects our current Government.
The Democrats, who are up for re-election, are going to spend the rest of the year campaigning on ObamaCare & bashing President George W. Bush. Sound familiar? Obama has done this before he came into the Office of the President when he won last November. He has been campaigning on ObamaCare since April of this year, yet only inertia has happened. Yet when Obama is forcing the House & Senate to vote on ObamaCare, I fully expect a lasting firestorm when the clueless legislatures campaign later next year.
President Obama is, at his core, a spineless coward as most bullies are nothing but lily-livered cowards. Worse, he is as politically tone deaf as they come given his immature arrogance & feckless leadership. Expose Obama for the truth behind the carefully constructed masque. He is nothing more than a self-absorbed narcissist.
He is not a leader. He is not charismatic. He is not eloquent. Just watch without a teleprompter. True, he is a thug, but most thugs are just spineless cockroaches.
Obama will come undone by his own self-destruction. ObamaCare is the bomb. And Obama, Nancy Pelosi, & Harry Reid has lit the match. 2010 is not going to end well for any politician with a D by their name.
Congratulations, Dr. Hanson:
It has only taken a year for you to define, in your clear, authoritative style. what was apparent to cassandra’s like myself a year and a half ago. On more than one occasion I commented. pleading that you, with your erudition and deep knowledge of history, to call it like it is.
The whole campaign was a Lucifarian scam. The American voters would never have elected an identified Socialist to the Presidency. Obama’s record was in he public record, readily accessible. Not a thing you refer to here is a revelation. Yet not one candidate or campaigner on the GOP side used the word “socialist” or made any reference to the dirty Chicago machine that sppnsored him or his Communist Organizer credentials.
Pur nation is in a deep crisis, with many conservatives still dithering over “surely he must realize”, thanks to the unwillingness to “act like them”. I admire you personally, and you have always been one of the top commentators, butI consider pundits like yourself as complicit in putting us in our present plight as the MSM. It is a little late for outrage.
Christmas will afford little consolation..Christ-like toleratance will not serve this nation well over the next few years, with either Obamism or Islam. We should be seeking a” Throw The Bastards Out!” state of determinism.
I liked the title of this article: Where Did These Guys Come From? I believe many if not most prove that there are no intelligent life forms elsewhere in the universe. Or these guys have been expelled from their home planet because their brains had not fully matured or evolved to intermingle with advanced civilized humans. Can we just return the favor to whatever planet they came from and return to sender?
Gylippus – The arch of your prose is of astounding height. One could assemble a largish Tea Party or even harbor an elephant beneath it’s lofty vault. It could provide shade in the summer, and protection from the elements in the other three seasons.

Are you sure, Fred? Did you check?or are you just trusting your gut? I hope you made the right decision on that one.
BTW, how’s that anecdote about your last fire fight coming along? Just about ready to share your fiction? Here, let me help you get started, “It was Christmas Eve, but I was pretty sure we weren’t going to see any snow. Not this year. Not here.”
I can fill in that one . . . can you?
So what do we do with these ideologues who cannot be dissuaded by anything as prosaic as the loss of elected office? Is there anything we can do to thwart their mission, short of revolution?
Excellent. I could feel it rammed down our collective throats. Clearly you understand the man….now can you tell us how to get rid of the vile taste he leaves in our mouths?

“So what do we do with these ideologues who cannot be dissuaded by anything as prosaic as the loss of elected office? Is there anything we can do to thwart their mission, short of revolution?”
See my #42 comment. Dismantling the system of government subsidy that nurtures and sustains these neo-socialists and narcissists would go a long, long way towards neutralizing their power.
And if you wish to stop short of armed revolution and/or mutiny, then there’s no other option but peaceable and lawful secession.
Note that despite the horrendous human price the Union paid to end the War for Southern Independence, the Constitution was never amended to forbid secession…which rather tells you all you really need to know about it.
VDH- “both houses of Congress are under liberal leadership with ample majorities”
In a BHO wet dream, maybe. When the 60 votes needed in the Senate include some very much farther to the right, I would not call it an ample majority. The Republican’s tent is almost as big, so why are none of the left-leaning R-s voting with the D-s? Not because BHO is snubbing them, but because it would be political suicide.
The Republicans of Lincoln were truly respectable until Nixon sold their soul with his Southern Strategy. Until then, the Democrats were a nasty, racist bunch. Neither party is good enough for me. Neither has a coherent unifying principle.
Call me a troll if you like, but back in my echo chamber, all of you all would be trolls.
Obama is the front man. SDS has quietly worked in the Universities and foundations they seized since the 60′s and they probably found Obama at Occidental. SDS created ACORN AND SEIU and they are ready, not playin. Somehow they have to be torn out of the institutions.
Once Obama, ayers and wright were connected to Soros/OSI money the plan was in motion. How to stop it? Nov 2010 is a good start. Important to stop multiculturalism and the bolivian revolution in our schools, which are under attack from saudi islamics also.
What exactly are these Chicago Brass Knuckles that Victor keeps going on about? Seems to me that Chicago is no better nor worse than South Carolina in 2000, where Bush apparats were push polling voters to see how they felt if McCain were to reveal he had an illegitimate black daughter?
It’s the same bread crumbs Rove and Atwater would have laid down. Demonize the democrats, they’re anti-american, socialist, comun-nazi jackbooted thugs that want to rape your wife and daughter then force them to have abortions. They will steal your money and give it to lazy minorities, piss on the American flag and outlaw religion.
I can’t admire Rovian tactics, but it is effective.
We have to take back our schools and the legislative body. The states fund most of the schools out there and they can influence their operations and agenda because it’s all about the money. Our Representatives and Senators control the money and only they can reward behavior or cut off missbehavior. Until we get back our legislative power and our schools, we are in for a long haul. Please get involved in the 2010 elections and clean our the dead wood. Even a poor republican is better than a good democract. All democrats must vote the party line no matter what their personal beliefs i.e. Ben Nelson. Dr. I always scan for your posts first. The left can denigrate your thoughts but they can’t put up a viable argument. Keep it up.

Prof. Hanson is more than capable of speaking for himself, but I’d like to respond to your sense of exasperation (which I share). I think, to a large extent, things had to play themselves out before such things could be written and taken seriously. Many commentators were raising red flags during the runup, and immediately after the elections (VDH included, if memory serves). But except for a minority of sharp-eyed observers (I’m certain that Prof. Hanson can be included in that number) few were receptive to such a message. Centrists were fooled by Obama’s charm, and many Conservatives were too shell-shocked to put up an effective fight. Any commentator making such apparently extreme claims about The One being a neo-Communist, polarizing thug) would be dismissed by most as a crank. Instead Prof. Hanson has chosen to consistently highlight the long litany of highly partisan Big Government takeover of the banking and auto sector, healthcare, enormous spending programs – and their likely consequences (not to mention the yawning gap between Obama’s healing campaign rhetoric and actual governing style), and let the facts speak for themselves. It was part of the education process. Now that the public has had a chance to gauge The One, analyses such as this one can be readily seen as accurate, even by former Obama supporters.
Obama effectively rode a wave of quasi-hysterical anti-Bush sentiment, and even revelations of his connections with people like Ayers, Pfleger and Wright could not halt his momentum. I don’t think the conservative media could have done much more than it did to reveal the truth. On the other hand, I wish that John McCain had raised a few of these issues more directly. That may have had greater impact.
I share your sense of frustration that so few could see beneath the sheep’s clothing, but at present it is more constructively directed at the loony Left
Lefty – you aint seen nuthin yet.

There is only one way. Keep pouring it on. Keep talking, writing, thinking… use the phones, use the internet, pressure your representatives, organize meetings, protests, marches, tea-parties… post videos, songs, print billboards, buy newspaper ads, get creative: EXPOSE AND DISCREDIT. Educate the open minded and challenge the ideologues. NEVER LET UP. We will take more hits, such is the pulse of battle, but make sure that their every victory is Pyrrhic one and watch their support ebb away… The lower The One sinks in the polls, the harder it will be for them to push their next Big Project. And for God’s sake get out and vote in 2010-12 (and make sure every Conservative you know does too.) Sadly, its a slow process, so we must be resolute and steadfast.
There is reason for guarded optimism. Undoing the damage done will be trickier, and educating a majority about the dangers of modern liberalism will be trickier still, but it’s all do-able. And as VDH has pointed out, The One has actually made that last part easier. At this point decline is indeed largely psychological. There is no reason for us to go there if we determine not to, and unite behind a leader who understands that above all else. That’s one reason why I like Sarah Palin, I do believe she uderstands that and is prepared to take on the Lords of Political Correctness and to expose their goals and methods. Can she pursuade a majority of Americans remains to be seen.
America has indeed polarized somewhat. Nevertheless we have two choices: allow it to go under and accept the eternal shame that goes with that, or stand up and assert our belief in Freedom, and do so loudly, proudly and without a thought for the nonsensical mewlings of the Left.
Voters get the leadership they deserve & sometimes better. We have a corrupt government and a corrupt and dishonest news media that ignores the rot.
The only cure for what the Obamaton’s are doing is voting the rascals out and repealing in toto everything they have passed.
Well stated and defined. When VDH speaks I listen. I’ve commented on this before in a number of posts, trying to get a feel for exactly who we are up against. “The key is to know your enemy.” Here is my latest that also links to one of my first where I try to outline the players and their motives. Usually lefties are weak because they are dedicated to their own individual goals, which do not always work well with other leftie goals. For example, treehuggers aren’t huge union fans. Unions mean manufacturing- Manufacturing means destroying the environment, etc. However, Obama was a catalyst and emboldened the left to expose themselves and their power hungry greed. A good thing in one way, a bad thing in that he did manage to get them to row the boat of socialism/communism in one direction, with force.
http://truthandcommonsense.com/2009/12/17/talking-about-revolution-war-and-the-current-characters-in-office-why-they-cheat/
Truth is we are living in a time where the left is pulling out all the stops. If they had ethics or honor they murdered them early on in this purge. Their desire, their hope is to create a country where eventually everyone will have to bow to a certain type of government, with them in charge. Three steps forward for one step back is a bargain. This is war. War on your life, your children’s life, your nation’s life. Make no mistake this is what it is.
President Obama is the perfect representative of the values and behavior of the Baby Boom Generation.
#99 NAT say: “Case in point: Bush ran away on january 20 leaving $1.2 trillion in debt, and yet you prefer to suggest it’s all Obama’s doing.”
The Dem majority in Congress spent that dough. Only Congress can approve spending tax money. Bush is no more nor less guilty than they are. This lady or gentleman, NAT, says the silliest things. What a card! A laugh riot. BTW, NAT, how is that research on MOS’s going?
#151 NAT asks the musical question: “BTW, how’s that anecdote about your last fire fight coming along?”
When have I ever said I’ve been in a fire fight, NAT? I’m not a fireman and I’ve never been in combat. To be in the Army is not necessarily to have been in combat. Strange, why don’t you know that? Anyhoo, what was that MOS again?
“You hail CBO numbers as “the gold standard” and proof of a healthcare bill’s demise when the CBO is unfavorable to Democrats. And yet when the CBO issues a report supporting the positive deficit impact, you dismiss their numbers as partisan hackery.”
The CBO has changed it’s mind after they discovered Reids numbers were all lies.
As for the rest of your post, it’s just the leftists talking points that can be proved to be garbage.
While there are also lots of differences, I start to see many similarities between Obamism and Peronism: cult of personality, government control of corporations and unions, “social justice”, “third way” foreign policy (in a non-Cold War context), etc. Except that Peron himself was much more experienced and competent than Obama.
Merry Christmas?
Now, let this Conifer of Harmony that marks the winter Solstice bear witness to this nation’s criminal past and further murderous intention and atone and repent -
[...] Multiculturalism – Our universities subscribe to race/class/gender theory of exploitation, in which much of the unhappiness of today’s [...]
Unfortunately, it’s not only the universities that subscribe to the notion of the relentless, pervasive and oppressive arrangement that the Western civilization is – it’s the state/ government itself, that instead of having been left to its neutral arbiter of the social contract has been hijacked by the left and pressed in actively championing the destruction of the very nation it was supposed to protect and let flourish.
I’ll limit myself to invoke from the multiple absurd “new verities” tenets of the “isms” reminded by Hanson, the absurd infliction of homosexuality as a norm, and the destructive consequences of this action – the state sponsored insertion in the education system of the notion that homosexuality is normal has further distorted an entire generation’s (anyway) distorted view of reality, making it more willing to accept other aberrations as part of a carousel normalness.
Yes, Obamism’s pedigree is not only Marx, Patrick Lumumba, Stalin, Che or Mugabe, but the Stonewall Riot as well –
We live under a form of cultural occupation reminding the communist states in Europe, where the official truths were observed in national solemn ceremonies, after which them, truths, were uniformly derided and bemoaned in private.
Yet, while one can draw from this precedent some resigned satisfaction, this is not how America was supposed to be – and the Winter Solstice Conifer of Atonement is there in the corner, reminding everyone that the Obamism has a fertile ground to live in the American society -

NO, Senator Coburn DIDN’T. Knowing a big snowstorm with blizzard-like conditions was forecast for Wash DC, he prayed that “some (Democrat Senator) can’t make the vote tonight”. If you believe that’s a request for God to smite somebody dead, you need to find a shrink to help explain “projection” to you, buddy.

” … Bush ran away on january 20 leaving $1.2 trillion in debt, and yet you prefer to suggest it’s all Obama’s doing. It’s simply not true …”
Actually, Bush didn’t run away, he was voted out. But do you remember the $550-billion-in-just-a-few-hours “bank drawdown” in mid-September of 2008? The one that Treas Sec Henry Paulson said “threatened the economy of the entire world”? Do you remember the press reports that discussed Bush and various leaders of the House and Senate coming out of a meeting with Paulson & Fed Reserve Chrmn Ben Bernanke, looking “pale and shaken”, and announcing that we had to do something to stop world markets from going into free-fall? Both Democrats and Republicans worked together to get the emergency TARP bill finalized and it was signed into law on October 3rd. (Consider what it took for both houses of Congress to get a bill finalized in about 2 weeks!!) That’s $700 billion of the “$1.2 trillion in debt” you’re complaining about. Yes, we shouldn’t have allowed ourselves to run a deficit that high. And then Your Hero Obama gets into office and the FIRST THING he does is pass a $787 billion Stimulus porkfest. Then more bailouts for banks, and GM, and Chrysler; he pushed the House to pass Cap and Trade (which will cost us beaucoup bucks), and now both houses have passed HealthCare Reform (which will be another trillion or so). So, let me clarify your viewpoint: Bush approves $700 billion for a world-wide financial crisis and it’s BAD; Obama pushes through almost $2 TRILLION in mostly-pork (AFTER decrying “the financial mess that Bush left me”) and it’s GOOD? You need to try your whine again, with different data.

“… I do part of my part by just voting a straight Republican ticket.”
Repubs have been trying so hard to recruit members (note their so-called “big tent”, explicitly welcoming “diverse viewpoints”) that they don’t stand for anything any more. The party as a whole, and especially the party’s leadership, can best be described as “Democrat-lite”; they’re trying to offer a little of everything to everyone. “If you stand for nothing, you’ll fall for anything” is a pretty good description of GOP leadership right now. When the Repubs get back to “small government” and “fiscal responsibility” (a balanced budget each year and NOTHING “off-the-books” — and just think of the screams when they start phasing out entitlements!), and when they stop the “affirmative action” discrimination-against-the-qualified policies which promote equal-representation-by-percentage-of-population for “minority group x” in (pick one: college, the fire dept, military, –essentially any entity that receives federal money), maybe then I can wholeheartedly endorse the New Reformed Republican Party. Right now, there are some –and ONLY some– Republicans who are any better than your run-of-the-mill Democrat. Hopefully the current debacle will force some changes to the GOP’s platform and policies.

“… I believe our founders got it 99% correct. The one small error, which is proving our undoing, is constitutional term limits for the executive and legislative branches.”
Or maybe the error was not foreseeing the rise of claims of “group rights”, which leads to organizations such as the NAACP or CAIR or “homosexual-rights” groups clamoring for favors from the government (while no one notices that “government favors” for one group INEVITABLY means government prejudice AGAINST other groups). If we can ever get back to a small, limited government which recognizes that its purpose includes restricting its own power over individuals, we’ll need to codify some kind of statement into the Constitution to the effect that “government exists to protect the rights of individuals from infringement, not to assure equality of participation or outcome to various competing groups”.

A big AMEN to that…. Now if there was just some way to get more citizens to notice that the MSM actively promotes the Liberal viewpoint and deliberately conceals information that’s unfavorable to the policies and politicians they favor…
Bravo to Fox News and all the wonderful Conservative blogs who help to tell “the other side of the story”. May Dr. Hanson and these others grow in readership and influence in the New Year.
And, in addition, a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to all who take the time and trouble to read and post here. God bless America, free speech and liberty!
To #109 (Rachel Peepers): The Buddha once said, “We live in fear, therefore we do not live.” The Obamanibles are simply a fearful lot. They see the world with a scarcity mentality and many have been raised by equally fearful parents to believe that, even if they must steal it, the end justifies the means because “stuff” is the only true measurement of one’s successful survival. It is through this lens, then, that their worship of money may be understood, their pursuit of dying with the most toys so someone – anyone, but especially those of their own kind – will see them as a winner. In simplest of terms, and perhaps the most kind of terms, they overcompensate.
I sometimes question whether it all started with Man’s finding the means to insure the survival of those upon whom Nature would have taken a pass. The artificial prolonging (and now even the creation of) life most assuredly has, as does everything, unintended consequences. The crippling experience of someone like FDR creates either a lifelong victim or a survivor. It is the victim mentality that gripped FDR. He capitalized on his personal handicaps and snowballed the wholesale attack on America’s soul begun earlier by Wilson out of what I can only call some sort of spitefulness that through simple fate he was not going to ever have exactly the same opportunity of Constitutionally-guaranteed pursuit happiness as others.
But again, this can be boiled down to overcompensating. It is a lens through which, at least to me, much of history makes sense and has become part of the lexicon through snidely noting the arrogance of a short man as a “Napoleon complex”.
It might sound cruel, but Nature has her reasons and I personally believe we do an end-run around them at our peril. Maybe one day we’ll be able to easily and inexpensively be able to document legitimate differences in brain physiology and function between those created with the help of artifical means and those whom the Fates deemed viable from the first gleam in their daddy’s eye. There I think we would be able to group the propensity towards liberalism (dependency) and conservatism (independence), with misguided liberals found more often to be the product not of natural selection but instead man-made selection. And then we would be wise to simply ban the practice.
As to the good Professor’s piece, as usual it is an astute, contextual analysis. I’ve recently read another one that presents a good argument that what will save Obama’s presidency is a true, conservative Congressional majority that restores America’s free market and repeals the Democratic assaults on our Constitution. And while I would like nothing better than to throw off these chains of gut fear for my beloved country, I can’t help but wonder if such a thing would still not be enough to kill the pervasive ideology of progressive liberalism here once and for all. For to allow one such as Obama any victory, no matter how small or how ill-conceived or not of his own doing, would continue to provide the fodder of false hope to those who need to truly understand the dangers of the modern-day Democrat.
An excellent, articulate summary of what has happened to our country and what we can anticipate going forward. I appreciate this blog for both the superior analysis provided by Dr. Hanson as well as the courtesy, congeniality and intellectual quality of the comments!
VDH’s reference to Caesar in a column about Obama is appropriate since Caesar arose during the Republic and changed the form of the Roman government forever. Definitely and unsettling comparison.
On the other hand, Caesar was a military man and Obama is not, in spite of Predators in Pakistan.
Obama has partially nationalized many industries, now has unlimited political power (if Congress cooperates), has demonized the opposition, and has disregarded the law (see the VDH list under “Why are we tiring of Obama”). Obama has also expressed astonishing moral rectitude and frequently declared his many failures to be triumphs.
Turn now, if you will, to the 1935 book by George Seldes, “Sawdust Caesar”, and you will find episodes parallel to the above, (at least in the early pages, before Ethiopia (1936) and il manifesto della razza (1938)).
With that in mind, another, far less flattering name comes to mind when pondering the first year of Obama;
that name is Benito Mussolini.
20 / 20 hindsight identifies the pieces that allowed liberalism to morph into the communist / facist system we are now subjected under. I enjoy Victor and his writing is excellent and his arguments spot on, however they miss the larger point. As Plato recognized, the polis wants to be ruled. Obama recognizes this also…. or his handlers do.
Merry Christmas Professor and Happy Birthday Jesus.
Dr. Hanson
It is so true on BHO. He is so self-centered. God, Country, and Family are very hard for him to talk about. Liberlisiam is mental disorder. It is right on the dot.
It is going to take a generation or two to recover from all this mess that he created. We need and must act now.
“It was the best of times, it was the worst of times.”
Merry Christmas, indeed.
VDH’s extensive commentaries have our respect for their measured pace, like using a stop bath in a photography dark room, in developing his indictment of our historic first Islamic apostate president and the phalange of our authoritarian rulers. He knew from the beginning how the picture would eventually turn out.
Shouting out all at once the raw truth that we’ve elected a communist inspired, blame-America-first, third-world grievance mongering multitude in every corridor of sovereign power, shocks most Americans living responsibly, whose natural decency makes the idea of this rapacious conspiracy bulging throughout the labyrinth of Washington bureaucracies too repugnant to contemplate. Serious speculation of such deleterious designs is too foreign to our experience to casually accept without resistance.
We all know that the giant of responsible Americans finally awakens at a culminating point, yet only after constant prodding of him to first open his eyes to the impending peril will he then take a stand.
When our rulers’ plan to extend dependency on government into the middle-class relies on policies that weaken America, we need to strengthen our independence, not by going Galt, the practical consequence of which, if achieved, only adds another degree of decline in furtherance of their intent to induce our perdition; we need the steady arousal of traditional Western instincts held by the majority who, with reason, had lived carefree of the self-serving machinations of career politicians.
They will be punished with our votes, by the invisible hand of the markets, from the unintended consequences of their avarice, and for attempting to immanentize the Eschaton against a nation founded on freedom, individual rights, and a marital heritage in preserving them.
No George Bush, no Barack Obama. Had John McCain or Al Gore won in 2000, Obama would probably still be an ineffectual state Senator in Illinois. And the Al Gore of 2000 was not the nut the Al Gore of 2009 is.
And while I am not happy with the current administration, I guess I do not chare the apocalyptic views that many conservatives seem to have regarding him. In fact, there are even a few things I agree with (for example, that Europe should be responsible for its own security from now on).
#151 stickyshift, and et al great patriot posters. Do what I did just an hour ago and regester as a precincnt charirman candidate. All counties/ disctricts have them most, of them are vacant, it only usually takes 10 signers. So go to your friends and neighbors. Just a few hours a month is all it takes. I did state that I wanted to be a conservative ‘community organizer’ We can control the process! Grassroots here we come.
P.S. Arlington Texas is pretty conservative but we need to Keep it that way, good luck on our taking OUR country back fellow patriots
There is only one problem. Obama has totalitarian insticts. Once the socialists take over it is often too late and very difficult to dislodge them. I think this is the begining of the end for capitalism and freedom these pukes now have what they always wanted, the power over who gets born and who dies and the power to order our lives as they see fit. I really believe that this is the end of the family. Reproduction will be state sanctioned, no need for mothers and fathers and love, we have will have gene banks!
A brilliant essay. The only question in my mind is what the reaction to Obamaism will be like. However that may be, this recent turn in our politics promises severe nastiness for the foreseeable future.
Dr. Hanson,
I have said many times, like your dear Mother, even before the election, “everything happens for a reason.” The question is, will this be the beginning of an American rebirth, or the definitive end of American greatness?
Your article is as always spot-on, and I would add the Alinsky factor: obama is applying Alinsky’s teachings almost flawlessly. My hope is that an ideology based on lies cannot win in the end. The Truth must win, mustn’t it?
Evil such is this (the obama machine) requires much prayer and fasting. Prayer, and ACTION.
On this day after Christmas, be assured, this man will fail. Does anyone think that we get these horrific Winter Storms, everytime these Climate FREAKS get together, by accident? The LORD works in mysterious ways. The enemies of FREEDOM do NOT work in secret. They’re right out there, in your face, when they think they have even a slight advantage. And they overreach. This GODLESS Creature, that sits in the White House, is an ENEMY of Freedom. He IS the “DOMESTIC ENEMY” that every Military Members’ OATH speaks of. “I swear to protect and defend the Constitution of the United States from ALL ENEMIES, Foreign and DOMESTIC”. And I believe that he has been foretold in other pages, as well.
“And I saw the BEAST rise up from the Sea. And he was given a MOUTH to speak haughty and blasphemous words. And he was allowed to exercise authority for forty two months.” Revelations 13-5.
He has NO CHURCH. He’s been in office a YEAR, and he has NO CHURCH. He REFUSED to speak at Georgetown University, unless ALL REFERENCES TO CHRIST, were either REMOVED or COVERED UP. He blew off the National Prayer Breakfast. The first President to ever do that.
What did he say in his campaign?
“WE are the ones we’ve been waiting for.” Haughty? Blasphemous? He’s the ONE.
Isn’t that the change we were warned about?

OBAMUNISM.
Dr. Hanson:
I wish I could muster up something either articulate or informed in response to your excellent column. However, my sugar cookie and wine induced haze is precluding me from doing so. Great column–illumuniating, revealing and, as always, in great historical context.
Wow, I have to admire this. It’s hard to pack this much crazy into one short article.
Q.What motivates Obama?
A. Obama wants to make America weaker (in every way possible), because he believes America has been a force for evil, not for good, since its inception.
So far, Obama has been very successful at acheiving his primary goal.
“Et tu, Brute?”
And since we all are now aware of the mistake visited upon us, where do we turn?
What do we do?
And how do we turn back the clock on the horrendous debt on our backs, that we must work out of? Obama is making it worse. . much much worse. . .
And in the event some “sane” politicians take over the houses in 2010, how do we begin to repair?
Even Michael Goodwin, an unapologetic Obama supporter wrote a column “Dreading our Future”. . .where he self flagilates via confession: shame on me for voting for Obama.
I was shocked by the turn. He voices that he finds Obama’s constant “crisis de jour” boring, his lack of understanding of international situations, our Nation’s place. . . .the will of the voters. . .
————–
President Obama, for whom I voted because I believed he was the best choice available, is a profound disappointment. I now regard his campaign as a sly bait-and-switch operation, promising one thing and delivering another. Shame on me.

He expresses disappointment at all of congress, and Obama’s push that “everything” be done NOW. . NOW. . .there’s no TIME. . .we must do it NOW. . . .
What concerns me is that Goodwin’s disappointment is more borne of the slow progress to the left, and not the far left push itself.
What I did enjoy was his glee at Washington being snowed in, because he took comfort in the idea that “hell has finally frozen over.”
While we may not agree on the reasons Obama and others are pushing so hard on an agenda no one wants, we all agree the country is spiraling downward under Obama.
What I haven’t heard yet is how we’re going to fix this. And I find that the most appalling about the GOP. Not a word from our up and coming prospective leaders.
Nature abhores a vacuum. . .
VDH, You have expressed what I have been feeling since BHO’s conversation with “Joe the Plumber”. Merry Christmas will hopefully have alot more meaning int 2010.
The SCOTUS, COTUS and POTUS, accumulatively, have brought us to a point of decline. They have systematically, over time, enslaved you and me. These elect and appointed elite’s
have legions of deeply entrenched bureaucrats;
unseen, unknown and uncaring that our liberty,
freedom and futures are being disregarded. We, the serfs, can only sense the invisible chains of our captivity. The Prison Industrial Complex is now become the American Gulag; The Soviets practiced what our masters seek to perfect. ” Lock um up; ” we cry, as we line up to be next. Pitiful that history demands a free republic have a 200-year life; then bondage. Forgetting God, allowing murder of unborn citizens and contemplating the destruction of traditional marriage has a cost; enshrined in the inescapable history of
other arrogant and childish civilizations. It is the leftist BHO and effeminate congress that knows the time of our bondage is now.
It is lucky for us that Hugo Chavez is on the world stage at the same moment in time as Obama. People see the similarity in speech and action between the two and recognize the damage done to Venezuela by Chavez is a precursor to the damage Obama is and will do to America.

Victor is out of his mind. This supposedly extreme left wing agenda has escalated a war, emasculated healthcare reform and has focused on restoring Wall Street to stability. You wouldn’t know a liberal if one bit you on the tuckus.
Yes! Yes! Yes! Very well written. Incisive. You get it. We get it. I think the level of backlash is going to surprise us. Obama plays golf while America burns.
Reading the comments is heartwarming. America is waking up. slowly but surely. A much needed education is being received, though many are not quite aware as it seeps in. This education is in direct opposition to the intentional indoctrination of the PC Dems and Stupid R.I.N.O. You hear logical arguments, supported by undeniable facts. As opposed to the shrill, hate-filled diatribe of the PC whose arguments cannot be supported. The PC has yet to learn that violence repels. Thus, the sane message exposing the hidden agenda of the PC , seeps into the consciousness and the individual has to respond, first subconsciously, then consciously. Truth prevails, because there is no defense against truth. Americans are inherently fair, compassionate people. Morality and character is deeply imbedded in the vast majority. The PC has striven mightily to remove religion – moral compass – from American life, failing miserably. Remember, ” what GOD would destroy HE first makes ridiculous” ! Obama is becoming more pitiful by the day. It is somewhat sad to see an individual disintegrate so completely. But he deserves every humiliation he has begged for. He is not respected. He is seen as week, naive and unbelievably inept, incompetent, unqualified and disgustingly stupid. He thought being a black, anti-America hating Muslim, he would be automatically loved and received by the terrorists as ” one of us. ” He is actually despied. Those killers respect strength and force. They both hated and respected George W. Bush. They never had a moments doubt that he would seek them out and bomb them into another world. They have taken the green-light Obama has given them to try to kill as many Americans as they can, before their hated, dis-respected cohort, Barack Hussein Obama is kicked out of office, impeached, tried for treason and imprisoned!
They understand American politics much better than Obama and his corrupt, treasonous Congress. Obama and his corrupt regime are working at a frenzied pace to get their devious agenda – imposing a socialist, totalitarian society – on America. Our enemy knows that Americans will never allow the nation to be enslaved. They will kick the home grown, domestic terrorists out of the White House and Congress straight into the waiting maximum security prisons.

“You have been sat here too long for any good you have done. Depart and let us be done with you. For the sake of God, go.”
He is seen as weak, naive and unbelievably inept, incompetent, unqualified and disgustingly stupid.
I’m sick and tired of my countrymen being plain rude and nasty to each other over Democrats and Republicans. Republicans still think they’re the party of Reagan and Democrats FDR. I sat through eight years of the most socialist president in history only to watch the other side elect another one last year.
Turn off Rush Limbaugh or Keith Olbermann or Ann Coulter or Michael Moore or Jon Stewart and get a clue.

Well, until you have . . . “like a rhinestone cowboy”
Assorted schools of the left are forever talking of anarchy and revolution. Perhaps they will get what they have always wanted but not with the outcome they have longingly hoped for.
#21 I am in total agreement with your #2 observation if the left keeps pushing us down the road to serfdom i.e., “America is at an awkward stage: Too late to work within the system, Too soon to start shooting the bastards.” It will only be awkward for so long. I will certainly not go gentle into that good night.
Socialism came to Europe and Canada because the people are sheep. I’ve lived there and love them, but I don’t believe for a moment that socialism in the U.S. would end up looking anything like the E.U. or Canadian experiments, which by the way aren’t finished yet. In the U.S. try something more like the old USSR or China model as the end game. We Americans are not a docile lot and won’t be sheared so quickly by the elites of the left. I’m thinkin they have probably begun the unleashing of a spirit we haven’t seen here in quite a while. But certainly they don’t understand this at all. They can’t. After all they are elites among the unwashed masses they look down upon from on high.
Thanks
So now it’s ‘Obamaism,’ a non transparent attempt by the right to brand anything THE PRESIDENT supports as Stalin-like. The right has nothing, except vague suggestions that anything Obama supports is against the ‘will of the people.’ They are certainly right that is against the will of THEIR people, the ones who read the constant criticism of anything the President does, the ones who take every opportunity to lash out at the President for every stand he has taken since he was still in the womb and take the criticism as gospel. The subscriptions to National Enquirer must be on the rise. They have nothing and so they break out the vague arguments, again. I would once like to see their evidence beyond one poll written and taken by some vague organization from which they have cherry-picked the results. Please remember that the so- called national polls are generally based upon somewhere between 900-1,200, a miniscule amount from the over 200 million non-children. The right is going to end up being the losers when health coverage for those not now insured, at least some of them, kicks into high gear and the economy begins to recover. Obama has owned up to these being his problems, not relying on the oft used statements about the problems having begun under GW Bush.
This is the best article I’ve seen that explains why the Dems are acting in ways that appear to spell their doom in upcoming elections. It’s because they’re ideologues; these are not mainstream Liberals, they’re fanatics for whom their ideology is like a secular religion. They’ll gladly go down to defeat…as martyrs to the cause. And, after all, they really aren’t taking that much personal risk. Even when they get thrown out of office you can bet there will be a comfy sinecure awaiting them at the University of their choice.
California the Golden state, American future, is fast becoming the poster child for an bankrupt third world State! If Obama & the Democrats are successful the Calif. Nightmare will soon be the Nation,s Nightmare!
An unholy alliance of Socialist Democrat politicians, Unions, and Illegal Aliens supporters are feasting at the trough of tax payers paid benefits while taxing & regulating business and the tax paying public into poverty.
The pandering of Left Wing Democrat Politicians to their constituency of Unions, Illegal Aliens and open border supporters, are driving business and citizens to other states & countries, while leaving the parasites & welfare leeches in an increasing bankrupt, crime ridden, dysfunctional state!
For years California has ignored economics 101 and imported Criminals, Uneducated Peons, and poverty from Mexico, which increased Medical, Welfare, Crime, Prison, etc. & adding a estimated 10 to 16 billion per year to Calif. State expense to support the invading horde of Illegal Aliens while exporting business and educated tax payers.
Like all Socialist countries the results have been a astronomical increase in social welfare, schooling, prison cost etc. and a lowing of Living standards, Heath care, Education standards, Tax receipts & finally Bankruptcy.
The policies of Obama and Wash. DC Democrats are intent on following Calif. policies and Pro-Illegal Aliens and Anti-tax paying citizens and are endorsing the same socialist process of rewarding the Corrupt, Stupid, Foolish, Lazy, Greedy & Criminal while punishing the responsible, honest, law abiding & hard working citizens of American.
Failure to abide by our Constitution against invasion & enforce our Immigration laws and constraints on wages and benefits for public employees will result in turning the Golden State into MexiCalif and the end of the Calif. Dream and the beginning of the MexiCalif. Nightmare!
Amnesty & Citizenship as a reward for their invasion of the USA, will result in the rest of the USA turned into a Spanish speaking third world cesspool and follow California into a polluted, over populated, Spanish speaking, third world Nation of Crime, Corruption, Poverty, Cruelly & Misery modeled on Mexico!
This will result in a population depending on Welfare and the Democrat party, thus assuring the lock on power for the Socialist Democrat party of the United States of Mexico!
re: “Otherwise, Merry Christmas…” and the Lincoln discussion, the quote that comes to my mind is this:
“…well, other than that, Mrs. Lincoln, how did you like the play?”
But I do appreciate Dr. Hanson. I must continually remind myself that if I don’t keep a long and deep enough perspective, I will certainly become an unhealthy, unhappy scrooge with high blood pressure.
Pray for a good crop and get out there and hoe.
Arm up America, decision time will soon be here. Resist or Submit are now the choices we face. Are we destined to become sheep herded by our oligarchic rulers or do we stand up and say “No More?”
Sedition in the face of tyranny is not a crime.
Never give in Never give up, Never again
So what drives his agenda?
Apparently personal grudges do as well!
I just read an article at http://www.ourchangingglobe.com which describes how Obama blames the British for torturing his grandfather in Africa 60 years ago and is destroying US – UK ties because of it.
Jane
Thank you, Professor Hanson. Well done.
Arm up America, decision time is fast approaching.
Resist or Submit to the oligarch regime are now our choices. I for one choose to Resist.
Sedition in response to tyranny is not a crime.
Never give in Never give up, Never again.
This article is full of hyperbolic fear mongering and flat out lies. Obama has been attacked and demonized in his first year more than any other president in modern history, and most of it is based on assumptions or predictions about Obama destroying the constitution and turning america into a socialist country. The constitutional argument that is thrown out by conservatives seems to only apply to policies they disagree with. Where are the conservatives calling for the end of the unconstitutional war on drugs? And what has Obama done that reeks of socialism. Pledging to let the Bush tax cuts for the wealthy expire next year is not socialism, statism, or whatever scary hyperbolic description of his philosophy you wish to throw out. Pledging a more diplomatic approach to America’s traditional authoritarian foreign policy is not surrendering to our enemies. Talking about race, gender, and class as legitimate issues in a realistic dialogue is not a multicultural conspiracy to redistribute wealth to poor blacks and inner city crackheads. The chicago way is an oversimplified explanation of how washington has worked for generations, and is nothing specific to the Obama administration.
This irrational hatred and fear of Obama for trying to make rather moderate reforms to the system is based partially on what Obama is perceived to represent. He represents progress, a multicultural heritage, and somewhat liberal policies. Thus, he must be destroyed by these kinds of ridiculous attacks. Disagree with his policies, but don’t come up with this conspiratorial crap about how he is purposely undermining America. I disagreed with nearly everything Bush did during his presidency, but I don’t question that he believed what he was doing was the right thing for the country. The anti-Obama movement seems to be driven more by who he is, and what he represents, rather than by any concrete actions he has taken. This article is perfect example.
*** This is the best Obama article of the year ****
This is Simply a brilliant article as seen though eyes and ears of a man filled with great depth , wisdom and obvious common sense rare these days on either side politically
and even far worse the out of tough with the earless and eyeless American media .
Mr Davis is a well known PHd Historian , Author of many best selling book , guest Lecturer and a man of Letters .
He sees quite clearly though Obama’s smoked filled Chicago looking class with no glass or class in the windows of his highly deceitful life always with a big smile . Behind that smile gives one the feeling he has read and studied Machiavelli as well as Alinsky where he worked for 5 years .
Obama is everything all those that dislike America Love and praise . Especially our enemies sadly and those that are jealous of this small nations huge success’s The greatest by far of all time … Obama has great distain fore .
Obama to our enemies and productivity is what France was to Germany in two wars .
We see daily with Iran .
In Obama we get countless promises actually lies as too our betterment as a Nation really meaning the collective .
We have leaned in the making of his Pie for all in the last two years in nothing eatable than a pretty picture with no substance , filling or fruit inside costing us 12.4 Trillion at this early point .
Three more years of this massive spending and becoming far more socialist ? God save us .
Tom Ontis:
While you probably believe that the nation isn’t turning against Obama, there is a contstant stream of polls now which say you are in fact, wrong.
As a matter of fact, 44% of the nation now wishes Bush were back in office again.
While the democrats are whisling past the grave, the nation seethes in anger at what the liberals are pushing.
Remember the youth group that Obama carried so heavily? Over 30% of them now view the democrat party with hostility. Yes, over 30% now give the democrats VERY NEGATIVE poll numbers. Not because of what you’re not doing, but because of what you ARE doing.
Consider it an awakening. Our youth will not be so easily deceived next time.
You’ve lost the seniors, the youth, the moderates, the independents, the soft republicans. . .you’ve even slipped 22 points in hispanic support.
You can’t win elections much less hold majorities with that much of the nation hating your policies.
Dem Rep Capuano told the democrat caucus just last week what he learned on the campaign trail, and he opened with 2 words: “You’re screwed.”
Seasoned Dem strategist Pat Cadell said he has never witnessed this level of heightened sustained anger in the nation. He said “America is angry Washington, and they’re COMING for YOU.”
Obama’s childish push to force an agenda no one in the nation says is the top priority, and never HAS said is the top priority is to witness how incredibly immature he is.
Pelosi blubbering on TV about the protests, while she spends over 10K a month of OUR money stuffing her face while 1 in 7 americans is struggling to buy food. . . .
One thing that Obama will be credited with, a resurgence in the nation of people who are proud of our form of government, our freedom, our nation, and our ability to resoundingly tell someone NO, even if they refuse to listen.
Our ability to completely gut a corrupt party from Washington without having to resort to bullets. We have ballots now, we don’t need bullets.
“Just say No” works for more than just drugs.
And the democrats are about to find out just how angry this nation really is.
Reality check for you: In a little over 2 weeks, some states begin EARLY VOTING in primaries for 2010. The democrats won’t be able to play the “hope the voters forget” game. Very soon, the nation will be turning their eyes to the new up and coming leaders, searching for a leadership quality, searching for someone who will stop this insane train right on the tracks, and put us back on the RIGHT track to recovery.
And that won’t be the democrats. Tic toc, tic toc. . .
Thank you for a fine article professor. I am curious why, after reading you consistently for the past nine years, that you are not more active on the “chattering class” circuit. I understand that it revolts you however there is a need for clear, rational voices and in this very rough time too many miss the opportunity to hear you … Hoping this year you will force yourself to take some of these steps .. Merry Christmas.
I don’t agree with most of what is being wrought by this administration and Congress. Checks and balances were built into the system for a reason. But when you have people such as Holder at DOJ there are no checks, no balance. Instead we have this stilted ideology that on the surface says it is for improving the lives of the poor and disenfranchised when in reality these same programs will grossly enrich the corporations and entities that fall in line. Do you think MSNBC would be so obfuscating and to negative Obama press and so conciliatory to the radical and subversive acts taken by the likes of Rahm Emmanuel if GE wasn’t getting an inside track on government contracts for military and “green” programs? Of course not. This is a corrupt administration and a corrupt Congress. We need to implement term limits and true transparency. The healthcare bill was simply a means of diverting a revenue stream for private use for government programs. Does anyone else wonder what the money we will pay for four years until the program goes on line will be used for?
Well all of a sudden he is shocked by bare knuckle politics. He must have been asleep during the previous administration with Karl Rove, the push for the war in Iraq, Valerie Plame affair etc. Shocking!
“[W]hen he [messianic narcissistic Barack Obama] is done, we will suffer, but also sicken of it [the mess... liberalism had devolved into] for quite a while.”
Well, Christmas is called The Season of Hope. Still, I must remind one and all that among the good doctor’s currently-teaching colleagues there remain some who profess that Soviet Socialism only failed because the will of its dictators wasn’t committed enough to the True Belief to force a pure, perfect socialism upon the people.
I see little evidence that America’s Obama experience is closer to its 1989 than its 1917.
I can only disagree with one point in Dr. Hanson’s brilliant summary of what makes Obama and his anti-American Marxist party tick. That is the notion that merely irreversibly transforming America into statist, socialist society is reward enough and that they will willingly be defeated at the polls.
This ignores the obvious fascist elements of this criminal cabal. They will never relinquish power at the polls.
We have already seen the purpose of government-funded jackboot “community” groups like ACORN. Their purpose is to defraud and destroy the electoral process. We have already seen armed Black Panthers intimidating voters at polling places in America, with impunity, because the Attorney General of the United States approves and supports fascist thuggery.
Obama and the Marxist party are and will use the entire Federal government apparatus to subvert free elections. They will buy all of the local apparatus in America’s major cities. America will not win back its freedom without a price.
Why do we keep calling the agenda outlined by Mr. Hanson as “liberal”? There’s nothing liberal about it – where’s the liberty? It’s socialism, pure and simple. The Western elites are thoroughly infected by it with the recipients (“oppressed”) in tow. If the West is to have any hope at all, it will take generations of vigorous grassroots activism to take back the culture. But, will there be enough people with the stomach to fight for it? I don’t know.
Good article. The Roman Empire went through an extended period during which Romans could not get a decent or even mentally stable person to rule them. To make an analogy the last four presidents, and one has to include Obama on this list, also leave a lot to be desired; of course, they were not and are not as bad as the worst of the Roman emperors. But we have definitely been going through our own extended period during which we have not had a good president and even the field of candidates has often left something to be desired. One can even see Reagan as having been an intermission in an even longer period.
So, is what the dems doing now bad enough to force the political dynamics of this country to bring forth better candidates? My own answer is a very emphatic yes.
This is one of the most depressing pieces I have ever read. What will become of this once-great nation? Will the populace wake up and vote all these incumbants out, or will it be business as usual until America is run into the ground? I fear the latter.
199. Now and Then:
“Well, until you have . . . ‘like a rhinestone cowboy’”
NAT, which indecipherable poet are you imitating, Hart Crane or John Ashbery? I can get no meaning from this comment. But really, time for the MOS yet?
Really best description of what is going on. Often they point to Teddy Roosevelt as the father of progressivism but then they say we should follow all the U.N. laws and policies, same sex marriage, overhaul the police, etc. which TR would have never dreamt of.
This is indeed a control game- predicated and sustained by lies. As long as the press continue to show this small, petulant socialist off as a smiling minstrel he will have further opportunities to destroy free enterprise and individual liberty.
Ask your friends who buy into his redistribution lies to give their homes to an Indian tribe before you can take them seriously…

It has only taken a year for you to define, in your clear, authoritative style. what was apparent to cassandra’s like myself a year and a half ago…”.
As an old-school centerist Democrat, I too anticipated all three of Prof. Hansen’s present concerns in early 2008. For me it happened the day the freshman senator from Hyde Park made clear an astoundingly narcissistic intention to disrespectfully jump the line on the historic bid of a female candidate who had been paying her Democratic Party dues for decades.
I might add that I’m doubly dismayed to have watched HRC gradually secumb to the Stockholm syndrome, ever since O tucked her away in what he’s made sure would be a jobless job.
What a bunch of nonsense. This column was anti-Obama from start to finish. Merry Christmas from the grinch? Where do you think we were coming from? A President who cooked the books by putting the wars and much of the military expenses “off budget?” A President who added $5 trillion to the national debt in his eight years of relatively properous times? A President who comes from a state that has the highest percentage of residents without health care insurance and another 25% or so with awful policies that will be next to worthless if services are needed? Come on. We’ve got nowhere to go but up under President Obama. Take a seat Obama-haters, at least for the holidays. Give us all a break with your lies and distortions.
THE REID-PELOSI HEALTH CARE COLLECTIVIZATION ACT OF 2009 —- Parallels with Soviet Collectivization of the 1920-30s —
The year 1928 marked the beginning of the government’s “war against the nation.” The people were not to be bargained with through market forces or offered incentives. They were to be coerced and regimented, so that they would become not merely employees, but virtual slaves of the state.
THE REID-PELOSI HEALTH CARE
COLLECTIVIZATION ACT OF 2009 —- Parallels with Soviet Collectivization of the 1920-30s —
Without any formalities the propagandist asked Mother whether she wanted to join the collective farm. She said: “Yes.” He then sat down at the table under our icons and wrote the petition for her. It said:
Whereas the collective farm has advantages over individual farming and whereas it is the only way to secure a prosperous and happy life, I voluntarily request the collective farm’s management to accept me as a member of your collective farm.

VDH, excellent article. Great analogy of where we are as a nation. This is my first visit to the website, but certainly not my last.
We are now in a battle to save the republic. And the opposition has the advantage, but I believe with the angry that I hear and see around this nation, many are not getting what they voted for. Promises made, have not been promises kept. The 2010 election will be a trial run for 2012, and the success of trial run, could be a glimpse of what needs to be done in 2012. Once again we have a Carter-like President, but much more severe because of the numbers held by the majority in congress. The battle ahead will be difficult, but we must not let ourselves be overwhelmed. Government organizations (ACORN AND OTHERS) will be funded (our tax dollars) by congress for this campaign. Therefore, we be constantly monitoring what the other side is doing from the beginning of the campaign until the polls close on election day. If these people believe in buying senators, don’t believe for a moment they wouldn’t try and buy the vote of your neighbor. The battle will be long and hard, but we can win, we must win, so that we may pass on the better America that we received. The misery index of 30 years ago now looks so small in comparison to what we now have before us. So, for those who don’t know what our government is doing, tell them. Those who say they don’t care, show them the advantages of caring. Those who oppose us, tell them why they should not. There are so many reasons, and it only takes one reason for the wake up call. Before election day, request a voter list and compare it poling places in your region of registered voters, and be ever informed of new registers to help combat voter fraud. We may not stop it all, but if we do it nation wide, it could change the outcome of the election. As the working-class, we certainly don’t want to be lazy. Help in the selection of good honest conservative candidates. Draft them if you have to and tell them it is their patriotic duty. Tell them that they should do it for one term anyway. We can make the 2010 election our revolution, and this might just keep another kind of revolution from ever happening.
I agree.
You forgot to mention, communism, socialism, Marxism and Muslim all behind the cloak of hidden or destroyed documents of his upbringing. What does this recipe equal? America has been asleep in the naivety of abundance. I on the other hand had to flee from communism. God save our republic.
Professor – Based on the 200 plus comments most of your readers seem to share your opinions and regard your piece as brilliant. While I doubt that you meant it as your central point, I believe that your essay shows the historic inevitability of the events of the last year. Finally, in President Obama, we have a politician with the courage of his convictions. The President (and his party leaders) have proven that he and they will do what ever it takes to bring equality and justice to our nation.
While some of your readers seem to yearn for a revolution, I believe that, despite the discontent that you and others try to foment, more people lean closer to the President’s philosophy of sharing the wealth and helping the downtrodden than the more stark “every man for himself” view that many of your readers appear to applaud.
Our democratic process will prevail, the worst of the rough edges will, eventually, be removed from the legislation. The ultimate idealistic vision of our President may not be achieved in his term(s), perhaps not even in his lifetime. Inevitably however the march towards justice and equality will be attained. I rejoice to have the kind of visionary in office which will bring us closer to a” more perfect union”.
Merry Christmas to all and thank you for your thoughtful essays, please keep them coming!
Brilliant article, you lay it out concisely and accurately. It’s a shame that due to the dumbed down nature of our public school system and the mind numbing simplicity of our mainstream media that most Americans won’t find this, and if they do, won’t read past the first sentence.
As i have said from the beginning…do not listen to what Obama says,,watch what he does. That is all you need to do…he is a destructive force, and we can only hope that 2010 mid term elections bring back some balance into the system…for the first time in my life I am glad that I am old…so sad to say
A very cynical article, but it strikes home on enough key points. The president has no qualms about letting the media uphold the facade he so carefully crafted while he runs a very different game behind closed doors.
But I think the point that struck me most was an observation I’ve had for quite some time: Obama is rabid egalitarian obsessed with a warped vision of social justice. A captive of his own past, he sees all of American culture against a framework of victimization.
Yeah, the state and the college professors and their delusions about what they call race and gender and class inequalities and all those other “multicultural” types who are out there aiming to get us…. They’re trying to make us feel so bad about our wonderful heritage. They want to take everything away from “Our America”. They make me so very angry. My name is Stephen Colbert and my nation supports you!
A ray of hope is Lt Col Allen West running for the House in Florida. He would give Nancy a run for her money. Please look up his name…..he is an American hero.
Where do these guys come from, like this intellectual fraud who is just recycling the same old tropes and generalizations with his trademark classical allusions thrown in to make himself look smart? VDH has about as much credibility as Palin these days.
JohnR22:
yes, the Dems take no real risks, just like all the right wingers who got us into Iraq while safe, secure and not only not sacrificing anything, but getting a tax break to boot!
Just a quick note of appreciation for the impressive way in which Victor Davis Hanson can articulate a complex idea, such as this:
“In short, equality of result doctrine ignores the role of markets, of skills, of tragedy itself that renders some of us ill, others in perfect health, some born gifted, others less so, some evil by nature, others good, and instead promises that the state can even us all out through its power of material redistribution.”
Wish I’d said that.
What a bunch of paranoid drivel. Equality of result? What is your evidence for that, just to pick one of the conspiracy theories in the above article. I read in this post a lot of shop-worn generalities, but no evidence that is anywhere equal to the extreme fears being raised. I guess VDH’s point is that raising taxes a little bit here, and bailing out a company there, and some pork-barrel spending and vote buying…is some sort of fundamental threat to the system of American meritocracy, risk-taking and effort? Do you all really need to be reminded that the things you are saying are so terrible about this Administration are always with us regardless of whether Republicans or Democrats are in charge? Are your memories all really that short? Do you people have some psychological need to be afraid? For people who profess to love our country, y’all sure do think America is awfully fragile. To the people who consume this fear, I’d like to ask…what has changed in your life personally to merit such extreme doomsday-ism? Probably nothing. You just read over and over that if Obama does X then Y and then Z will happen and it will be terrible!!!! And now you believe it. Look around your actual life … not just the propaganda you consume. America is still America even if a person you don’t like is President. Our country is great and strong, and Obama is not changing anything fundamental about America, and couldn’t even if he wanted to. And if you think our system is so weak that he could, all of your chest-thumping patriotism might be misplaced. Sorry to have to break the news to you, but the existential challenges you fear are just small changes at the margin of government and the economy. That’s it. Seriously. These are modest shifts that go back and forth every few decades. For example, the maximum income tax rates Obama has proposed are about the same as tax rates when Reagan left office. So whatever redistributionist rhetoric you want to trot out now, applies also to St. Ronald. So there’s really no need to make sweeping references the French Revolution or Communism. Anybody actually experience in their actual life anything like the fears being stoked here because Obama is now President? I didn’t think so. Y’all need to unplug from this site and Fox for a few months, and start making up your minds by what you experience directly. Not by the fears that are being sold to you. America is fine. No need to panic.

Countervailing Views, what flavor is it today? Personally, I’ve always liked orange.
Rahm Emanuel is the bamster’s ‘wife.’ The story of Obama & Michelle is as made up of fabrication as Tiger Woods and Elin. With the bamster sweating it out in Chicago steam rooms. Instead of at strip clubs.
As to Skippy Gates, and haarvard, we also know Dubya got an MBA and a ten year old has a better grasp of monetary values than anyone in the Bush team actually has. Except for their hired accountants. And, they look down their noses, collectively, on smart people.
As to McCain “winning,” which he didn’t even come close to the threshold to do; there’s no difference between him and Dubya, as far as being born into the “legacy expecting people to kow-tow.” Kerry & McCain are both gigalo’s. And, if anything, Kerry is the more accomplished of these two. So, I’m not impressed.
If McCain had won we’d be facing race riots right now. While by having the bamster win, and NOT wipe out the debt of those snared by lack of qualifications for loans … what can I tell ya? You’re at the bottom of the totem pole. Especially where kids are born to unmarried women are concerned. And, you’re not going to fix that by waving a fake magic wand around. Or, by holding silent beer summits.
One year into this presidency and the biggest surprises remains how stealing a trillion only whet the political appetites. And, I don’t care what political label the critter is wearing!
Herbert Hoover crashed the GOP back in 1932. He swore he was “the better man.” He did everything in his power, except carry a sign that said FDR was as dumb as a feather duster. And, he caused FDR to stand and walk stairs to the inaugural. Changing the date to January from March, after 1932. And, letting the president get to the podium even if he uses a wheelchair. What did Hoover prove? He held the power. (While what saved FDR were the republicans at Treasury, who had all the plans in place for the day FDR walked into the White House.)
Are there any politicians left with any awareness in them? No? Then they’ll come to learn what Japan learned on December 7, 1941. Now, why would you want to wake a sleeping giant?
What wasn’t brought out was the Harry Reids don’t care about something so passe as getting re-elected anymore when it comes to purveying their agenda. They have many billionaires and green industrials who will support them should they fall victim to the tea-partyers.
Very well written. This collapse of our government was likely inevitable and perhaps necessary to awaken the apathetic public in our post cold war world. Fortunately I think, the ultra progressives have shown their entire hand far too quickly — I am sure much the chagrin of Hillary, who would have been far more skilled at slowly implementing her far left agenda. Hillary and her ilk are more like a metasizing slow growing cancer, while Obama is the rapidly growing encapsulated mass — both seek to kill the host by eating it alive, but the Obama-Pelosi-Reid cabal can be more easily excised and reversed as long as they do not bankrupt us or get us nuked before we can put them out to pasture.
Interesting piece. I got a little confused when you were talking about how people are willing to self destruct in order to push thru their leftist agenda, but at the same time tend to their messianic narcissism. I think it is more just plain old narcissism driving them. The chink in the armor is that if they think their plans are so great, why not jump on board with us? Take the health care. Put your thermostat at 65. Take a commercial jet. Maybe that is where the messianic part comes into play.
The thing is – what do we do about this? It scares me. Try being a business owner in this climate of uncertainty… in a hopelessly liberal state. Saying I am scared is not hyperbole.
I agree with Dr. Hanson’s analysis of the driving forces in Obama’s presidency. I would add BHO’s overweening ego as another powerful factor. But for all its accurate summation this is not a very well written article. It suffers from poor and repetitive phrasing and a pressured, haste-ridden tone. I’ve noticed this several times with VDH lately and I’m wondering if anyone else has.
This article is high brow Glenn Beck. There is no real analysis, insight or fresh perspective here, just a recycling of the standard right wing talking points. Clap clap clap, oh bravo, just brilliant.
I have to agree with Mr. Wells – guy sounds like a fraud to me. I won’t even start picking apart this essay point by point because it would take so damn long to correct all the inaccuracies, plus, judging by most the comments, my efforts would be in vain.
You’ve got it right. The Obama White House is persueing backdoor socialism. An exalted statism will be financed by increasing taxes to the point of no return. It is an ideological hijacking that will succeed if the U.S. taxpayers don’t revolt.
Where were all these people in Nov. 2008. The level of hatred and cynicism are mind-boggling.We guys from the far right wish the guy to fail from day one. Why? because he do not embrace reagonomics ,laissez-faire ,deregulation of wall street that bring this country into this mess at the first place. As far i am concerned Conservatism is a backward , outdated ideology. you Guys , are Anti-immigrant,Anti- science, Anti-Multi culturalism , Anti-Hispanic ,Anti-gay, religious nuts, we guys might have to go back to the middle ages
In 2010 the job market will back on track , people will start feeling better about the country. Some blue dogs will be defeated(DINO) replace them with true progressive.
VDH, as always, uses a sharp pencil: Outcome equality, white male oppression, gangsterism. I would add pacifism and Malthusian thinking to the mix. But there is something else, power and partisanship. Neither of these is wrong or unusual in a President. But what disturbs here is that losing midterm congressional majorities and losing the presidency in ’12 (if that is the outcome of over-reaching) does not fit. BHO, if nothing else, wants to be a King. He has not decided whether of the nation or the world. What is his endgame? I hope it is not something desperate.
#236 Wells say: “…just like all the right wingers who got us into Iraq…”
Horace, I didn’t know you were in Iraq. Thanks for your service.
Dr. Hanson has written a more illuminating column on the Obama phenomenon than I have read before.
Insofar as the star quality of Obama, I am disappointed to relate the following anecdote. My son-in-law was at Fort Hood when the massacre took place. When Obama made his cursory visit afterwards to Fort Hood, he was appalled to see the general hysteria, adoration and downright silliness of many military people. We tend to think of the military as being more impressed with those that fully appreciate their mission and embody patriotism at its highest. But today’s military is not the military that we might think.
Every citizen who seeks to vote in this country should be required to read and fully comprehend this article.
VDH is the most learned racist I have ever read.
Thanks for all of your work during the last decade. Your thoughtful piece is one of the few that gets to the heart of the problem: the capture of our education system by leftist PHD’s who made up the core of the anti-war movement during the Vietnam era. We will defeat Obama/Pelosi/Reid, but only when we take back our universities will we make the country safe again.
Dear Dr. Hanson,
Thanks. In my opinion, you and a small group have single handedly shifted the tone of debate in the United States.
It was caustic, and has shifted to constructive. The latter requires a measured assessment. What are the strengths and what’s missing. A healthy ratio, of positive to areas requiring attention of 3 to 1 or even 5 to 1 earns the right to weigh in.
Under the impending and present, adverse political circumstances, you demonstrate extraordinary leadership, grace and insight.
And you inspire others in so doing, evidenced by the comments and conversation to each post.
What a gift! Thanks for that, and here’s to hoping the groundswell of strong and sensible continues next year and beyond.
I hope your Christmas was filled with joy and peace and wish you good health and prosperity in the New Year.
DS
Dear Horace,
When will you give up the anger inside?
Ridiculous. And conservatives constantly scratch their heads and assume that minorities flee from their ideals because of some inherent (literally) inability to understand the brilliant logic of conservative thinking.
How about this: certain conservatives truly have no idea what the experience of being a minority in this society entails. As a result, instead of assuming that when a person relates their experience, that they have some idea what their own lives are like, they assume that the person is lying. That they, the conservative not in the situation, knows far more than the person describing their circumstance.
My response: please, by all means, keep it up. The demographic changes in this country will punish conservatives or their arrogance for decades to come.
Either change your thinking or be steamrolled. Your choice.
Percy Sutton died – official obit avoids mentioning Sutton’s describing how a clique of Muslim supporters paid for Obama’s years at Harvard (subject he himself carefully avoids to address) -
Link to the story and video clip of Sutton’s testimony regarding this, yet another mysterious chapter in Obama’s life bellow:

201. Mr. Ontis
Nothing is vague about the arguments the right has with Obama. You’re very new to ‘Works and Days’ if you think that.
What is vague is Obama’s college and Illinois legislative records et al.
And yes…what would a conservative thread be without at least one contrary ‘Bush did it.’ gripe?
237. Engram
I second that!
If you are writing a blog of opinion, and your comment sections is an echo chamber, then you’re doing it wrong.
AngryBlackGuy –
When will you see that the policies of the Democrats do nothing more than keep minorities just where they want them: In their place and beholden.
Angry Black Guy:
“…assume that minorities flee from their ideals because of some inherent (literally) inability…”
Ideals or ideas. I would think our ideals are similar. Unfortunately, the liberal approach to our common ideals is inherently illogical, regardless of their race, color, creed, ethnicity etc.
“How about this: certain conservatives truly have no idea what the experience of being a minority in this society entails…blah blah blah”.
How about this: most Americans’ ancestors came to this country tired, poor and hungry. The overwhelming majority were not blue-blooded Puritans. They worked as indentured servants, farm hands, sharecroppers etc, and many were treated as scum for years.
Our President is African-American. Time to stop playing the victim card and get a life.
RE # 259/Angry Black Guy:
[...] My response: please, by all means, keep it up. The demographic changes in this country will punish conservatives or their arrogance for decades to come.

Unfortunately for you, ABG, the correct reading of the demographics shows that it’s the afro-Americans who will be completely marginalized in future by Hispanics – and carefully consider this observation since it comes from one who observes the fight around the shrinking pond right in Los Angeles.
Not a nice spectacle -

“Horace, I didn’t know you were in Iraq. Thanks for your service.”
” . . . gettin’ cards and letters from people he don’t even knooooooow . . . and offers comin’ over the phone.”
If you knew anything about radicals, or “leftists”, you would realize that Obama is no leftist. Are you kidding?
Did he immediately institute single-payer health insurance when elected, & outlaw insurance comapnies? Did he end both wars? Did he throw the lobbyists out of Washington? Repeal don’t ask, don’t tell? Bring up Bush/Cheney, both Vietnam service evaders, the latter actually a draft dodger, on war criminal charges?
He actually broadcast a Christmas message! Christmas! I know, there was some secret message in the tree that read: Death to The Infidel!
He asked the legislature to propose a modest health care plan that was even less “liberal” than the ones proposed by Nixon & Truman. This was deemed too “left-wing” for most people.
Oh my God! He appointed czars! I think it has been settled that czars have been a fixture in Washington through several administrations, a fact conveniently ignored by you Righty-Tighties.
He kept on some of Bush’s appointees, which Ann Coulter was even happy about.
Though you are well-read & literate, you really have no argument. We all know his faults, he is not, however a “communist”, or “socialist”.
The very same things were said about Roosevelt when he was up for re-election, e.g, he was part of the New York political machine, he was a Communist, he was going to expand social welfare programs that would interfere with business and people’s personal lives, take away private & personal initiative, etc.
I would think being a student of history that you would realize you are repeating the same swill over and over, ad naseum.
You would trust health care companies, but not the democratically elected government of this country, with your lives, & let the insurance companies keep the stranglehold they have on every person in this country, from birth to death. So it’s ok for private corporations to control people’s lives, but not the government?
Wake up fellas, why do you think insurance co’s lobby, at the rate of 1.4 mil a day? You think that they don’t want to control your lives? That they have your best interests at heart? Talk about naive.
What was the unemployment rate two years into Reagan’s first term? And the defecit?
Just let me know.
Oh, I suppose I could help you out a bit with your research.
Oh my God, your hero Reagan gave you some tax cuts! Whoops, didn’t help.
Bush did it? Yes, he did, along with some help from Reagan.
Bush got Congress to pass No Child Left Behind and the Medicaire prescription drug act, with no provision to pay for it.
In the words of one insightful commentator, Victor D. Hanson “makes a doorknob look intelligent & interesting”. His article on the “origins of Obamism” is just about the most idiotic drivel I’ve read in the current year.
If you truly believe that Obama is advocating and pushing a ‘far left’ or progressive agenda, then you’ve really got to take another look at the divisions and goals of the groups within the democratic party. Obama is not liberal nor is he progressive. He’s a corporate centrist. It’s important that you get these things right, because his policies and failures, when viewed through the lens of him being a liberal, cause harm to the longterm goals of actual liberals.
Angry Black guy is the typical guy who thinks no one else understands his plight. He talks like he knows all about slavery from experience. Nada!
Why don’t you give up always telling the rest of America nobody knows anything about the poor in this country unless he is a person of color.
Slavery was a terrible thing. No argument there. I dare say that the average black in America is much better off than the average black in Africa or any other part of the world for that matter.
Let’s hear it for moderation in all things. This thing Obama has going on is way left of liberalism…left of socalism as well as communism…how about Baby Doc???
Bill M. The flavor I like is reality….see the comments of Fred, George Fulmore, Tom Ontis and a few others in the comments section. The panic and fear that is trying to be created in many Blogs (and a network or two) will not serve our nation well.
Any of us who are over the age of 20 know that we live on a seesaw, it is moving today one way (I believe up) before it comes down again.
My only hope is that somehow we continue to stay “up” a little higher with each cycle. I remain impressed that so many Democratic political leaders seem to be committed to that vision, regardless of the personal cost. God Bless them.
VDH is a fine writer and can make make many thoughtful points. I enjoy reading his essays but I never want to live in an echo chamber.
Best of luck to you Bill and a Happy New Year. Happy new Year to you Professor Hanson.
Great summary, Dr. Hanson.
Your gift is a calmness and precision in laying all this out, which helps tamp down a sense of rising hysteria.
In appreciation for your sharing of insights on PJM and wishing you Happy New Year.
Sincerely,
“no free lunch”

‘the existential challenges you fear are just small changes at the margin of government ”
I hope you’re right but most of us disagree strongly.
so much conventional wisdom is just bunk. Let’s just take one example, that the country is hopelessly polarized. How can that be when Independents are the biggest voting block? America has sunk into a relativist muddle. Conservatives are as bad as any. I watched them nitpick candidates to death over thankless issues as Mormonism, uable to stir themselves to vote for a war hero and lifetime public servant. That showed me that Americans have no creed, anymore.
SOCIALISM DEMANDS CAPITALISM [TO PAY FOR IT]SOCIALISM DESTOYS CAPITALISM [ DESTRUCTION OF PRIVATE PROPERY RIGHTS] PEOPLE THAT WANT FREEDOM WILL BE FORCED INTO SELF-DEFENSE OF THAT FREEDOM.
