What Our Media Taught Me
I’ve been over here in Europe for about ten days, getting a different perspective on our illustrious media and how it is handling the various Obama “troubles.”
Perspective and distance are sometime valuable. I used to think, given the enormous size of the bureaucracy and the tragic nature of the human condition, that from time to time disasters would overwhelm us — and there would be not much the president of the United States could do about them. But after Katrina, the media taught me that neither the mayor nor the governor nor the Army Corps of Engineers nor the people of New Orleans were at fault for either the vulnerability to the chance of a catastrophic Katrina or the response after its arrival. No, you see, the commander in chief is the ultimate arbiter of successful or unsuccessful reactions to all such disasters. OK, so be it.
So while I am not inclined to blame Barack Obama for the scandalous federal laxity in the now polluted Gulf, the media long ago taught me that I most certainly should.
I don’t play golf. Never have swung a club. But in the spirit of live and let live, I also never cared much for deconstructing the game in terms of culture and sociology. The media, however, in 2002, taught met that I should in the case of George Bush — that his swing and even his use of a golf cart reflected a certain class disdain for us, or at least a frat-boy frivolity at a time of two ongoing wars. So while I would like to give our present president a pass on his obsession with playing golf at a frequency far in excess to poor George Bush’s, I cannot. I am conditioned now to grasp that Obama’s golf craze is a sort of self-indulgence reflective of a disturbing narcissist who entertains a shocking indifference toward the rest of us.
Press conferences were always painful to watch. Finger in the wind pundits try to one up their commander in chief, who, in turn, is always one slip of the tongue away from global scandal. But the press during the Bush administration also taught me that we need these feeding frenzies frequently, and must demand that our executives prove to be both eloquent and veracious. So while I don’t much care whether Obama stutters off the teleprompter, or idiotically says things like “corpse-man,” or misleads us on matters of fact, or even grossly says things such as the beheading of Daniel Pearl “captured the world’s imagination,” the media lectured me that I very much should care — namely, that President Obama almost never gives a press conference, and on the rare occasions when he does, we know why he was wise not to have done so in the past.
I used to think leadership meant from time to time taking on public opinion, advocating an unpopular position in a genuine belief it was for the long-term good of the country. However, here too the enlightened media taught me once that it is not so. When George Bush wanted to reform Social Security, Barack Obama was widely quoted by the press as a voice of wisdom in warning Bush not to beat a dead horse — given that the public polled overwhelmingly against any changes in Social Security (apparently fiscal insolvency will alone be the remedy for long-needed changes). In other words, we live in a democracy, and even a popularly elected president should not ram down something the people don’t want. Note that argument was advanced again with the Bush insistence on the unpopular (but ultimately successful) surge in Iraq.
Therefore, while I want to say that it was the president’s prerogative to push through an unpopular health care takeover, and to oppose a very popular Arizona law, I have learned that it was almost undemocratic that he has done so. The press instructed me on that again. Why tear apart the country, virtually create a tea-party movement, or pit Arizona against California by stoking the fires of resentment by so diametrically opposing what 60 percent and more of the people want?

VDH, don’t worry too much. You have something like Fox news, we in Europe don’t. We have ‘public’ broadcasters, owning three channels per country. Public means fully funded by tax money, even though much of them fill the screen with commercials as much as commercial television. Now guess who is pulling the strings within the broadcasters? Yeah the Social Democrats and Christian Democrats (Centrist corporatist). What we have as commercial television needs to make money and is thus not that interested in politics that much because it doesn’t sell like soaps, soccer, games etc do.
This together with the completely public educational system (same culprits) explain a lot of the Post WW II European mindset. Before the internet we didn’t had a lot of alternative views. Thank God that has changed. So keep it coming please
but there is http://www.libertaddigital.com (Digital freedom) in Spain
FOX news is done. They are showing their bias daily. They are compromised and no longer have the moral ground they once had.
WTF?
Right – unlike that bastion of truth – MSNBC.
What a warped sense of ‘balance’ you must enjoy.
Why don’t you crawl back to your hole at blusterington post?
Get a life!! FOX is the only channel we watch for news..the others are wieners with forked tongues..hidin’ hind “Yessa Massas!” backside.
The MSM hates FOX cause they actually do have viewers and tell us the straight truth..
If telling the truth makes one bias, then I wish we had more biased FOX stations!!
All news agencies are biased. This isn’t a “modern” thing – newspapers started in this country as party-funded platforms that could be used to attack political opponents, and they haven’t come very far from those roots in the centuries since.
The bias in the reporting on FOX is just shocking because they slant to the right in an era when essentially every other major news outlets slants to the left.
What drivel! If anything FOX goes too far out of the way in their quest for “fair and balanced”. They lean just slightly to the right with their news coverage only because they report what the socialist networks refuse to acknowledge (e.g. ACORN, Van Jones, Climategate, etc.). Baier is good. Shepard Smith is useless. Beck is great. Hannity is useful. O’Reilly is a waste of time. For the most part, their news is just news (although they report some stuff the other MSM media choose to ignore). Their commentary definitely leans right but no where near as far as MSNBC leans left.
Right on Dave 100% accurate on Fox reporting. And also all the news guys you listed.
But that is exactly my point, because every major outlet leans to the left, it is a good to have Fox as a counter balance. No newspaper or broadcaster is neutral, in matter of fact no person is neutral. That is not the issue. Information should, like all products and services, compete in the market, only than will you get diversity. State owned media doesn’t provide that.
You’re in the wrong room commander.
Yes, clearly a legend in his own mind …
More importantly, Supreme Allied Commander, do you have all your plastic army men in the right positions in the sandbox??
Obama promised us hope n change. Black is the new White. White is the new Black. Promises are the new money and Obama says you can take them to the bank.
I wonder how history would be changed if we had an internet in the 50s, 60s and 70s. How accurate was news reporting in those days? The reporters had the same biases as they have today. But we would have known in the 60s what was really happening if there had been an internet.
And today we would realize that JFK and Obama are clones. JFK was as incompetent as Obama in both foreign and domestic policy. For example, it was a JFK blunder that built the Berlin Wall and the press covered up for him by praising his “ich bin einer berliner” speech.
‘Doublethink’ is the new common sense.
Sir: I am no Obama supporter but I beg to differ on some points: JFK did not “cause” the Berlin wall anymore than FDR “caused” the invasion of Poland etc by the USSR. Your bitter comments re JFK betray you as ignorant of a great deal and inclined to lambaste the opposition for things they didn’t cause.
One, at the end of WWII, Russia was the biggest land power and we wanted to get the hell out of europe and back to the US. Nothing could have prevented it short of nuc war. That’s reality pal.
Two, the Wall went up because we were accurately perceived as not willing to start a war over it. Its good to remember that for most of our history, we did not meddle incessantly in european affairs–particluarly when one big country wanted to put up a wall. It stood for decades as communisim’s shame and again, short of war or moral suasion whose time ahd not yet come, there was nothing JFK could have done about it.
Three, Obama did not cause the gulf spill and he is probably powerless to fix it: the current hysteria by those who think that we elected an Emperor who must control everything is insane. We can see before our eyes one reason for the fall of the roman empire–evrything devolves to one man and his staff. That mania is I believe, the point of this article.
Four, the reason we are stuck with a law professor as President is the GOP’s total failure to run the country properly under GWB (not one spending veto! Not one!). The insatiable greed of the republican leadership under Fat Dennis Hastert and the moronic senate counterpart–not to mention the collapse of the economy just before the election and the failure of the GOP to have ONE decent candidate–not even ONE–other than a tired old man who served honorable in the 60′s and did nothing as a senator except vote to restrict free speech, help out some shady S&L types, and bore us all to death as a campaigner.
The GOP ought to be criticizing Obama for a lot of things, but speeding up drilling is not one of them. On that Obama was doing the right thing. The GOP will again show itself as unwrothy of trust if it focuses on dishonest hysteria over an oil spill as its reason for electing republicans.
Maybe JFK could have stopped the Soviets from
building the Berlin Wall, maybe not. One has to
wonder why the Soviets didn’t build the Wall while
Eisenhower was President. After all they had
eight years in which to do so. Could it be they
had more respect for President Eisenhower, having
seen him in action during World War 2, and knew
he wouldn’t have tolerated it?
It’s a question worth pondering.
It is a good question and I don’t mean to minimize the effect of Ike in the White House, or JFK’s perceived “lightweight” image. But I suspect it was largely because west Berlin–pulverized in 1945–was not much of a draw to east berliners until it rebuilt with US assistance after roughly 1955, and the stream out to the west from East Berlin eventually became intolerable. And let’s not forget that despite Ike, the USSR crushed the Hungarian rebellion in 1956–the US standing by while that went down probably contributed to the belief that the wall could go up with no problem.
But the US does not have infinite resources, or a people that want to endlessly fight in foreign wars. There is a limit and we prudently recognized that in the 1950′s and when the wall went up. As it turns out, the wall fell anyway and what was Hungary is now free. Prudence rewarded. Not great for the people that lived there, but all in all, a plus for the US that avoided what could have been an expensive war on two occassions.
Wrong Mr. Sprout.
Bush did actually veto a farm bill that was over ridden.
http://vitalsignsblog.blogspot.com/2008/05/why-did-bush-veto-farm-bill.html
Check your facts before you call somebody as bright as VDH ignorant.
Please re read my comment or have it read to you. I didn’t suggest that the author of the article was ignorant, and know from his books that he is not. I suggested that the poster to whom I replied was, in suggesting that Obama was “responsible” for an oil leak in the Gulf. He’s not. He is a lot of things-inexperienced, rash, egotistical to an extreme, lacking in JFK’s actual experience off campus…but he’s not responsible for an oil leak. I agree that the cult that assigns all creit and blame to one person in the executive branch is idiotic.
On the veto: OK you got me…GWB finally bestirred himself in MAY 2008 to veto one bill, after allowing pork-laden bill after bill
to pass into law in 8 years. The collapsing economy in June August 2008, the fall from the bubble created by high interest rates and unchecked financial practices (the SEC and FDIC were asleep–GWB didn’t believe much in walking the factory floor, so to speak–), speak for themselves. Don’t play gotcha: the fact is GWB and Fat Dennis Hastert allowed the US economy to drink past 2:00 am and we’re all paying the price–one price is the election of an even bigger spender.
I am loathe to agree with Mr. Sprout, but I’m afraid I must. There are a few similarities between JFK and BHO. Both were elected young and neither had any experience in foreign policy. Beyond that the similarities vanish. JFK had far more executive experience as a Senator than BHO prior to his election. By today’s standards JFK would be viewed as a Republican.
Obama didn’t flush an M80 down BP’s oil well pipe any more than GWB flipped a switch and caused a Cat 3 hurricane to make landfall in NOLA. The federal incompetence preceding and following each incident is telling. NOLA was a disaster waiting to happen. Local and state incompetence set the stage for the disaster, not the federal response after the fact. My question is why did ANYBODY allow BP to drill a hole in the ocean floor a mile deep when they didn’t have a contingency plan to deal with a disaster? Why is the Obama administration proceeding with a “thumb up their butt” policy of incompetence and finger pointing more than a month after the event?
Katrina hit, was gone and left incredible devastation in its wake. BP hit and is steadily producing ever increasing devastation every day for over a month now.
The Feds are limited in their ability to stop the gusher, correctly leaving it to the experts who are trying alot of problematic second level “solutions” never tested before at 5000 feet deep, until the two relief wells can be drilled, which should fix the problem. (God help us if they don’t). But the Feds are the leading edge of the clean up and betters heads than mine, down in the Gulf, can best judge how they are going with that. Standing in the way of Jindal doesn’t help. As Moral and Morale Leader in Chief, though, Obama is a bit too cool, and a bit of too Chicagoan, to be much of an historic leader in either department. He will fall below the middle mark of Presidents I am sure. But to the Minorities who identify with him, he will be a shining beacon forever. And rightfully so no matter what his shortcomings. And though that sounds racist, it is certainly not meant to be, in either direction. It’s just a fact.
MR SPROUT:
I too do not support the current regime. WELL WRITTEN! The entire debate is not about GOP vs. Dem. IT’S ABOUT THE CONSTITUTION. Both parties are entitlement parties hence BOB DOLE JOHN MCCAIN HILARY DILARY JOHN KERRY ALGORE RICHARD NIXON and I’ll stop there.
sol- No. You misheard or misread the slogan. It isn’t “Hope & Change”, it is “Rope & Chains”!!!! (h/t Subotai Bahadur)
“So we will shortly see that now as they unrelentingly turn their scrutiny on Barack Obama and his legion of ethical and competency lapses.”
You might want to make yourself comnfortable while you wait.
Well put, in spades, again.
I was apoplectic early in GWB’s presidency, about his failure to simply control the Mexican border. When one clearly thinks about it, throwing feelings and biases aside, the former president should have been impeached.
After all, the FIRST act he makes is to swear an oath to uphold the Constitution and ENFORCE the laws of THIS country, and most vitally to preserve and protect it.
Meaning, of course, that the prez is the TOP COP, the number ONE Chief of the Police, and the borders are the most obvious physical places he is supposed to do his job of preserving and protecting. And, obviously, he refused to do so, which simply put, means he CHOSE to dare the people to impeach him.
That the retards in DC who have the power, nowadays, were unable and/or unwilling to do so proves to me that we are living in a state of disconnect between the governing class and the governed sheep.
I think it was Dick Morris who piquantly noted that Slick Willie dallied with Monica because he could.
Well, just as in sports, where the GAME is always evolving as new individuals come up with new and unstoppable moves, just imagine, realize and weep about what all the Clinton “moves” have brought to American politics.
I, personally, was positive that Clinton would have to kill himself when the shame of his sexual actions became known by everyone. But, NO! Both he AND most of the post-modern dumbed down public in this amoral country have—MOVED ON.
It reminds me of a situation I once experienced. I had to use an elevator to move my things to an upper apartment, so I was busy filling it when this burly guy yelled at me for hogging it. I said the requisite “I’m sorry”, and he angrily retorted, “Sorry doesn’t cut it asshole!”
And, with Obama taking Clinton to even exponentially higher—I mean, LOWER!—levels, we can not escape that HIS new move is that even pretending to be sorry is kaput as a factor of American life.
I think we are absolutely approaching an unavoidable climax, resembling those subatomic dances in a bubble chamber when particles slam into each other. But in our oh so human case, it will be between two hoary sayings–
Absence makes the heart grow fonder.
verses
Familiarity breeds contempt.
Right now, I’d say more and more awake people are firmly in the latter mood, witness 22% approval for congress, etc.
And, what is most yearned for by such aware citizens is that the desire for, and love of, the absent U.S. Constitution epitomizes the former saying.
May the truth will out!
If you’re trying to shame the MSM into doing their duty as the third estate,
it won’t work…..they have no shame.
Fourth estate.
Of course. Thank you.
I’m trying to reduce the number of neurons in my brain…….
Fifth Column :)
To true.. The entire Obama admin is shameless too.
The odd thing is that in some past and present totalitarian regimes, the press was and is forced to tout the leader’s goodness or face death, distruction or confiscation.
Here, the press continually volunteers to flatter a President who has obviously flawed policies, far out appointments, dubious qualifications and a secret past. Along with certain members of the administration, the big media degrades FOX – the one and only network that doesn’t consistently flatter and faun over him.
The media continues to be AWOL by not giving riotous Mexican protesters and ever more disgraceful SEIU arrogance the chastisement they all deserve.
It was scary last week when many buses full of SEIU protesters demonstrated on a citizen’s lawn scaring a young boy enough that he locked himself in the bathroom. The police sent 3 officers to watch and later said there was nothing wrong. Tea Party grannies get swat teams in riot gear who look almost as fierce as Black Panthers outside a voting station.
In the USSR, Party members got special treatment. I fear the unions – police included – will get more and more special treatment until THEY are the government as we know it.
Foreshadowing is in Greece. And that the world is a smaller place, how could there be such disconnect in accepting that the U.S. is on the exact same path.
“We know all about Greece, but it’s very different there…”
There’s more answers in the study of behaviour and the distortions and delusions people make, than in presenting the facts. The latter will unfold as truth over time, but right now, opposition to the current regime (word chosen on purpose) is going to require much more effective communications and messaging. And frankly, the Republicans have not really advanced the cause that well unfortunately.
As Dr. Hanson puts forward so clearly, is raw material that one would think an opposing party could take and put to work to advance their popularity. Let’s hope they get it soon, or this path is going to continue with all kinds of very negative consequences.
Policies that prevail with the pundits consist of those that help the party, albeit they hurt the country.
To career politicians, the calculus of partisan power dictates the subordination of national interest to the interests of the party, the success of which preemptively supersedes any other measure of what is good for the county.
An erstwhile French autocrat, Charles Pasqua, summarized succinctly this sentiment with “la démocratie s’arrête là où commence l’intérêt de l’Etat” (“l’Etat, c’est moi” echoes eerily with those words).
It is old news that statist journalists form a tribe whose creed is power, and fetishism the thug antics of Democrats, so long as celebrity, or obsequiousness, insulates them from the consequences.
Their avatar is, of course, our historic first Islamic apostate president: duplicitous without remorse, mendacious without conscious, and nemesis of the existing order, what more could they ask for?
“An erstwhile French autocrat, Charles Pasqua, summarized succinctly this sentiment with “la démocratie s’arrête là où commence l’intérêt de l’Etat” (“l’Etat, c’est moi” echoes eerily with those words).”
Charles Pasqua was Minister of the Interieur (of the police and of the organisation of the territory) or a modern Javert. He didnn’t mean “L’Etat c’est moi”, but rather that the State has reasons that are above citizens’s heads in the domain of Defense.Especially when security matters. He was the one that innaugurated the anti-terrorism special laws and services, and also that limited the Maghreb immigration.
Louis XIV seems to have said (with no certainty) “L’Etat c’est moi”, means that a king with divin annoitment has not to justify his decisions to a parliament.
The today illustration of this royal motto, would rather be Sarkozy.
Et apres moi, le Deluge…:)
Your attitude has been noted, Dr. Hanson, oh, yes, it has been noted.
They’ve got a little list…
and no more ability to act on it
than The Mikado’s Executioner
The president’s primary job is to manage the federal government. The Federal government was charged with supervising oil drilling in the Gulf to insure that there were no adverse environmental effect.
It appears that the supervision was improperly lax. Good management would have caught that. The only reason we know that there was bad management was that there was a spill.
The president and his subordinates screwed up on this one.
Which other departments are poorly run?
So it is your contention that given enough management you can eliminate all risk. Drilling at 5000 ft is cutting edge technology. When you are at the edges risk is greater. If the current explanation for this accident is reasonably correct all the management and regulations in the world couldn’t have changed the outcome.
Yes they could have changed things..when the BOP blew, they should have stopped..but nooooo…they were in a hurry. Now they have a real mess.
The Feds have to approve anything that goes on in cleaning up the Gulf, obama said so,and so far they have failed at that too. Obama went for a photo op and people were hired for the day to pretend to clean the beach.
The little oil balls they were looking at were nothing compared to what is going on. The state wants to build the sand barriers, but the Feds have to approve it..eventually they will get around to it I suppose…in time. Jindal and Billy could have had this going weeks ago. So, yeah Obama still scores a 0.
Well, so far so bad. He may not have blown up the well, but he’s sure not helping the people he should be helping, but then the Gulf coast folks aren’t a basketball team, golf party etc..so I suppose we should understand. Damn good thing this didn’t happen under a Rep president. The MSN would be awake 28 hours a day demanding answers from him, so why not now??? ohh yes, the double standard. The token president gets a pass as they try to blame the former adm..bull S#@t
it’s time this boy president took on the mantle of a leader. Personally, I don’t think he can.
They should make a monster size lead pyramid and insert it point down in the hole.
They should make a steel screw the size of greyhound bus.
Chemman – “So it is your contention that given enough management you can eliminate all risk. Drilling at 5000 ft is cutting edge technology.”
Check out the piece from 60 Minutes a few weeks ago of one of the survivors who was senior personnel of the rig. (He jumped off the platform, 90′ into the Gulf to save himself, and fortunately was picked up by some guys who were fishing, and happened to find him).
The large sized o-ring had appeared to be disintegrating one month prior to the explosion. Trans-Ocean instructed the drilling to carry on. Nothing done, even though rubber pieces were being found in the muck refuse from the drilling the comes back up to the surface.
Also, the pressure tests were failing for the blow out preventer (BOP). In other words, the pressure in the BOP has dropped, but preventative actions were not taken.
That is not about management. That is about doing the effen job! And it wasn’t done … period.
Very droll, doc. This has been building for about 40 years, but it has certainly reached its climax (pick your connotation) today.
The media is overwhelmingly biased towards the left…and that’s just the way it is.
A guy like George Bush will never get the fawning treatment the leftoid media’s hero, the New Messiah, gets…and there ain’t much we can do about it.
Well, there is plenty we can do about it Dave. PROTEST this corrupt usurper until he is driven from office!
Our media is so biased that when Bush was in office they pretty much kept his nether regions firmly planted in their collective mouths.
Lib bias my buns!
More like weapons manufacturer bias.
Keep squabbling with your foolish notions that Conservatives and Dems are at odds with each other.
The concept of a separate group of people existing to keep the general population informed of people and events in a factual manner is apparently too much power for our current bunch of 21st century journalists (sic) to handle.
Most of the journalists today want “to make a difference”. To them, it means shading the truth and ignoring facts. It doesn’t mean presenting a chronicle of events to the public. Therefore, in the 21st century, journalism is a platform from which to present a singular point of view.
Some would say that this is propaganda; others claim it is a constitutional right. Regardless, their selfish need for reporting in a subjective manner is dangerous to everybody.
I don’t get it. Why would the government be responsible for what BP created? BP is solely responsible for stopping the leak, cleaning the environment and compensating the victims.
They have the technology. Government enforces the laws.
Why haven’t the other oil companies helped?
What makes you think they haven’t been?
The federal government has the responsibility to contain the oil leak. Procedures were established following the Exxon Valdez oil spill. It was not Obama’s fault that the oil spill happened, but it is his responsibility to contain it. He can order BP to do it, or he can have the government do it and send BP the bill, but it is the president’s responsibility to ensure the oil spill is contained and cleaned up. On that Obama has failed miserably.
Why make a clearly BP-caused disaster into a political game?
I’d like to hear the CEO’s take responsibility and admit they are incapable of coordinating salvage efforts.
“Why make a clearly BP-caused disaster into a political game?”
Indeed, Vivo. But also why make an act of nature, like Katrina, a political blame game?
But a better question. Why is Obama taking responsibility for this thing YOU say he has no responsibility for?
You should wish rather that they will say that they ARE capable.
Finishing his last sentence, Dr. Hanson inhaled deeply, held it, and awaited the inevitable outcome.
God Damn a Buffalo Tar Baby’s all over Obighead :)
The Obama regime is working very hard to destroy the American republic and replace it with a socialistic dictatorship where Union are the new brown shirts who will viciously enforce the will of the Obama/democrat totatlitarian state. All those brainless Americans who voted for this government should suffer the most; after all they worked so hard to produce what we have now, a corrupt, amoral, violent American dictatorship.
MSM has and is being punished for their bias. Subscriptions tumble, advertising revenue dissappears, try as they will to spin it, the public is voting with their pocketbooks. NYT, WAPO, all are on the verge of insolvency, they are trimming employees, blaming the “new media” for their woes. NBC is susidized by parent company GE, however GE is a public company, the stock holders are in open revolt. The MSM, in full view of the American people have been slow to react to the complete lack of compitence in handling the “Blow-out” in the Gulf of Mexico, now with undeniable results appearing on the shores of the Gulf Coast, projections that currents will take the oil to the Eastern Seaboard soon to appear on their shorelines, the media can no longer excuse Obama. In the act of one desperate to survive, they are starting to investigate what happened. Attempts to blame Cheney and Haliburton is falling on deaf ears. Revelations or mutual backstroking by BP and Obama is stoking fires of anger. Will this be Obamas’ Katrina, well the MSM, as the author has stated has set the standard….so yes this is, Katrina on steroids. BP cannot stop the flow in time to erase memories prior to November. It dosen’t take a rocket scientist to see through the “Plug the Hole” tiraid, He was counting on success by BP to show He was in control. One could say “Hope & Change” didn’t work out so well on that one either.
“Most of you covered me; all of you voted for me. Apologies to the Fox table.”
Glad to see you’re coming ’round to what I said was Obama’s game from the get go:
“Get even with Whitey!”
Meet the new “bond slaves!”
I, too, have spent the last week in Europe. I was sitting in the Madrid Plaza Mayor an hour ago, finishing a delicious lunch and a beer and reflecting on the European experience. It made me sad to think of what an idyllic life the Europeans have had the past 50 years. There was no war, we fought those that appeared. There was almost no responsibility as the welfare state took care of that. Spain is a lovely and prosperous looking country (at least the Madrid portion) but that is almost over, I fear. The Europeans have lived above their means, as have we Americans. Soon the bill will come due and, even if the Obami wished to pay, we have no money.
I felt, just now, like Sir Edward Grey who said in 1914, “The lamps are going out all over Europe. We shall not see them lit again in our time” I wonder how many of the throng of carefree Europeans I saw today have any idea of what lies ahead.
“So we will shortly see that now as they unrelentingly turn their scrutiny on Barack Obama and his legion of ethical and competency lapses.”
Except they won’t.
Ha Ha spot on Professor.
The left doesn’t do hypocrisy well.
For those of us who actually look at media behavior and performance overall and in context, this whole right wing meme about how the so-called mainstream media was so harsh with Bush and is now so easy on Obama is eye-rolling, laughable nonsense. Just this morning, I saw this piece in the NY Times calling the Gulf oil leak Obama’s Katrina. Comparing the two is roughly the same as comparing apples to radiator gaskets. Bush got an inexcusable free ride on the Iraq invasion despite numerous red flags for there being deception behind it all. While you could blame much of this on post-9/11 jitters and anxiety, the bottom line is that the entire mainstream got played as propaganda mouthpieces for a massive deception that cost countless lives.
Even when the media slowly started getting around to pointing out discrepancies in the Iraq affair, Bush still managed to get re-elected in 2004 thanks to unrelenting smear campaigns against not only his opponent, John Kerry, but against any critics, most especially Joe Wilson and former members of the Bush Administration like Richard Clarke. In those scenarios, the right wing media managed to do a wag-the-dog on the much larger mainstream media in getting the most vile BS into public discussion, courtesy of utterly bogus propaganda outlets like the Swiftboaters.
The Killian memos saga was a complete debacle for the mainstream media, but not for the reasons the readers here might think: there was zero real evidence for the memos being forged (the stuff about fonts, formats, dates, etc. was all utterly confused or malicious BS), but plenty for them not to be (they corresponded to DoD records down to the finest detail — including, notably, records belatedly released after CBS had obtained the memos — as well as in being in keeping in format with other military memos from the late 60′s and early 70′s when proportional printing was a common feature on both typewriters and the first generation of word processors that were were far numerous than was portrayed by moronic, self-described experts.) But go back and try to find any media outlet that made any sort of real effort at doing the obvious: collecting other military memos from the time, looking at equipment records; interviewing office equipment suppliers and others actually having demonstrable first hand knowledge of common office back then; and so on. Even CBS, who had the most at stake, did a major fail with its laughably inept “Panel Report” on the matter.
And then there was Katrina — all Bush and his people had to do was send in troops and supplies, as was in the plan, but…. The right wing did their usual bit to try to blame local officials for matters, even though they mostly successfully managed a massive exodus from a major American city (the flooded school buses, which were BFD’d by the right wing media was never more than a red herring. Also the evacuation route was at least 8 hrs long, and the buses, if used, would have had a lot of elderly passengers — do the math.) Even official reports can’t hide the utter fail of Bush, FEMA and everything else associated with his misadministration. But the MSM was again soft on Bush when harshness was the only appropriate response.
I suspect that the right wing’s obsession with their myth of how Obama has been treated so gently relative to Bush and that there is is some sort of “Blame Bush” conspiracy thingy going on is based mostly on cognitive dissonance: a lot of people who voted for Bush or were suckered into thinking Hussein had something to do with 9/11 refuse to believe they could have been played so completely as such utter fools, hence they are doing their darnedest to find ways to somehow equate Obama to Bush, thereby salving their egos with the self-deception that “Well, maybe Bush made mistakes, but Obama is no better.” No — if you voted for Bush, especially in 2004, you were a friggin moron. If you are trashing Obama, especially if you started to as soon as he took office or even earlier, you’re a friggin malicious moron. No exceptions, sorry.
I’m sorry but what utter crap! The doyens of Big Media had their knives out for Bush about eight seconds after the Supreme Court handed down their decison concerning the 2000 election. The first offensive against him was that he was “illegitimate” based on the results of the Florida recount (remember the “hanging chad” hullaballoo?)and the fact that his brother was governor of the state. That was followed by a systematic undermining of Bush as a person. Remember the unlamented Comedy Central show “That’s My Bush”? That was a moronic but significant event where the entertainment media decided to begin a calculated weekly attack on the person and dignity (I know you disagree with that) of the sitting President.
Let’s face facts about 9/11. The 9/11 attacks terrified the Left and the MSM not so much because of the actual threat to national security but because here was a cause that had fallen into the lap of the miscreant Bush and which he could use to rally the country behind his Presidency. That oculd not be allowed to happen. Even as the media gave lip service to the “evil” of the terrorists they were developing a strategy based on decrying the terrorist threat while being equally critical of the administration’s response to it.
The result of the 2004 election, as we know, was the signal for gloves-off and no-holds-barred open warfare on the Bush administration. Every mistake was placed under a microscope and every success ignored. Terrorists morphed into “insurgents” and every policy misstep was skewered by both the pundits and the celebrity class. Hurricane Katrina was a gift fromt the gods – A bad natural disaster that could be plausibly “blamed” on Bush. After that all bets were off concerning the evil Bush, the stupid Bush and the lazy Bush.
And Bush still has his uses. We are 18 months into the Obama administration and the cry of “Blame Bush” remains evergreen. The MSM still uses it to insulate the Obama administration from criticism and from having to take responsibility for their own policies.
Ignoring the really gross trolling behavior, BC, I too am an observer of the media, and your contention that there is no left MSM media bias is very unconvincing. The major indicator of this bias is the popularity of more right leaning outlets – like Fox – but also right leaning intellectuals such as VDH or say Water Russel Meade. What I believe happened is that as the mid century liberal/left consensus broke down with the rise of neo-Liberal critique of that consensus under Thatcher and Reagan the population of the US moved to the right. However, the MSM didn’t move with it enough to avoid creating a market for more right leaning outlets. When the people formerly known as the audience found an outlet on the net the depth of the discontent with the MSM became even more apparent.
As someone in charge of a typesetting operation during the transition from mechanical to computer typesetting I can’t accept your analysis attacking the credibility of the bloggers who exposed the Killian memos. It is clear to anyone who understands typography they were produced by a modern wordprocessor – which is to say nothing about whether they were fabrications or derived from real originals pertaining to Bush. To my knowledge the originals have not come to light and Killian is dead – so we don’t know.
As to the Swift Boat incident we discovered that the highly educated Jeffersonian John Kerry was disliked by his Jacksonian brothers in arms. When the Republicans discovered this perfectly predictable phenomena they showered the Swift Boat vets with money. I’m shocked, shocked! Just like I’m shocked that a highly partisan group like ACORN were given money and got up to monkey business. Or that the Jeffersonian Obama experiences Jacksonians as ‘clinging to guns and God’.
As to the effect of the Killian memos and the Swift Boat kerfuffle I think the electorate pretty well ignored both as attempts to manipulate them. In the end it was a choice between the mediocrity in charge and another mediocrity with nothing much to offer.
As to being a moron for voting for Bush are you aware that the charge of stupidity or being a moron in such circumstances sounds to people familiar with Marxism like the idea of ‘false consciousness’. That is, the claim that people are voting against their ‘real’ interests as understood by members of the Marxist vanguard? For example, British readers of the Guardian newspaper organized a letter writing campaign to appeal directly to voters in Ohio in 2004 in the belief that they could convince the voters of Ohio to vote their ‘true’ interests.
Keep snorting that magic dust, BC. . . The tired old dumbocrat talking points just don’t work anymore. When your dem compadres get their butts handed to them this November maybe you will wake up, but I doubt it.
Dan Rather outed himself with the whole “fake but true” line. When the person broadcasting the story admits he lied about a document’s authenticity, how can you possibly defend him?
To chambers: No. While it’s certainly true that the outcome of the 2000 “election” left a foul taste with a lot of people (no thanks to the acquiescent media “coverage”), Gore wasn’t exactly an inspirational politician, and that stuff was mostly forgotten with 9/11. All Bush had to do was be a responsible President in a time of national crisis and pretty much all would be forgiven. Instead, after a brief flurry of going after those responsible, he decided to then use 9/11 jitters as an opportunity to execute some brain dead policy wish of the neocon non-think tank, the PNAC, members of which peppered Bush’s administration. While it would have been nice if Obama had a nice big blue “Undo” button for everything and anything Bush did involving Iraq, but, well…there you go.
To myth buster: Sorry, you get a very big “No” as well. Here’s a little exercise: try to find an instance — Google and Bing however much you want — where anybody in the mainstream media actually did the most elementary of research into the Killian memos, the most basic being in rounding up other military memos from that time for comparison. The accusations by “Buckhead,” Charles Johnson and the like initially centered on proportional printing being something rare if not prohibitively expensive, and certainly not something you would find at an early 70′s air base — true or not true? Where are other memos for comparison? The later accusations about terminology and formats being wrong — again where are other memos from that time for comparison? When I went Googling for other military memos, I first found out that “Memorandums” are not considered official records so are generally not archived (there isn’t a single “memo” in the DoD repository of Bush’s records), unless they were classified at one time. So what about declassified memos? While there aren’t a ton of declassified memos out there, there are enough to to see a pattern, like this PDF bundle for example. In it are two documents: a long, declassified memo from 1961 and a shorter 1993 memo regarding an FOIA request for the 1961 memo. If you look carefully enough, you’ll note that the 1961 memo is proportionally printed while the 1993 one isn’t, although that one is right justified. That doesn’t quite fit anyone’s explanation regarding when proportional printing became widely available, does it? It turns out that proportional printing typewriters use to be common prior to the non-proportional, but apparently more reliable and more convenient Selectrics mostly taking over offices, and that the electronic word processing market shot up so quickly that IBM was making more money selling word processors by 1971 than typewriters. Granted that I actually had to go to big physical library to find any info on early office technology, and had to spend more than 5 minutes with Google to dredge up other military memos, but you would think with all the hand wringing and charges, and with maybe a Presidential election at stake, someone, anyone in the mainstream media would have decided to finally get the bottom if all this Killian business. Didn’t happen. Personally, the most WTF! moment for me came when the DoD released this particular PDF packet of Bush’s records on Sept. 24, 2004. This was just two days after CBS appointed a “panel” to supposedly probe what happened, and just four days after CBS backed away from the memos. What’s so special about that particular packet, aside from it yet another belated release long after the Pentagon claimed that it had released all of of Bush’s records? Go take a look. Some pretty funky fonts there, starting with page 3, eh? But of more immediate interest is the document on page 6 — the only proportionally printed record in all of Bush’s files. And I believe not a single mainstream media source took any note of this.
I know that the Killian memos episode, aka “Rathergate,” is considered a huge milestone for right wing blog sites, but….it was more really a huge milestone for the mainstream media — your supposed conservative-bashing “MSM” of lore — and not in any good way whatsoever.
I hope the sky is a pretty color on your planet. Ours is a lovely shade of blue.
People like you won’t understand if history treats Bush well. Many think it will.
I used to think leadership meant….
So I take it, Prof Hason, that you don’t share Frum’s “Obama leads from the rear” viewpoint?
I regularly “spar” with a progressive liberal friend who, despite a fit of reservation about Barry O. shortly after he took office, continues to defend him by blaming his failures on things done by Bush and his administration. Thoroughly addicted to the likes of Maddow and Olbermann and the entire cast of the lame-stream media, they are unable to fathom the real depths of the hypocrisy pervading both the presidency and those who waste air time to opine on it.
From time to time I share your pithy perceptions with them, and inevitably the reply is venomous in its declaration that they are “garbage”. But what can be expected from those who would leave ugly, capitalistic America to live in sweet socialist Europe, except for the hypocritical fact that they are bound to their pursuit of the almighty dollar via their business and principle alone is not enough to forsake their quest. In the same manner that principle is not enough for forsake the hypocrisy of traveling around the country in a so-not-green motor home to see their favorite band in concert.
I fear that we will not see the media step up to their rightful role as reporter of facts, of watchdog, until the cold reality of all this hope and change causes a significant emotional event for those like my friend. Unfortunately, such will inevitably take the rest of us down with them.
The Wapo, I recall it is, is now giving space to Joe McGinnis so he can explain that he is not really a stalker of Palin. No no, Palin is a hate monger and Joe is the victim of her juju. The media also teaches us daily, and for at least the last sixty years, that in general people who do bad things are victims of something or other. A really valuable thing to keep in mind.
Here is another thing the media is teaching us. Arizona is a bad place full of bad people. I must note that I’ve also posted the following at Don Surber’s blog and at Gateway Pundit:
I’ve not been more angry about anything else this corrupt, incompetent, and crazy administration has been doing than this attack on Arizona and the majority of its people. There is a federal law against illegal entry into our country. This and previous administrations have failed to effectively enforce it. This has led to numerous serious problems for lawful citizens and visitors, particularly in border states.
The state of Arizona adopts the fed law in an attempt to lessen the problems. The President of the United States threatens and attacks Arizona using false charges that the law is racist. If there were ever a “high crime”, this is it. If Obama and the leftist nuts win this one, we’ll need to change the name of our country to The Subjugated States of America.
The media set the tone and raised the bar during the GWB presidency. We shall not lower it for their Messiah.
Well said! Agree completely.
Their avatar is, of course, our historic first Islamic apostate president: duplicitous without remorse, mendacious without conscious, and nemesis of the existing order, what more could they ask for?
Amen…
and thank you C.G…….spot on.
Dr. Hanson,
Can any of the required dismantling be civil? So, the Left can just give US their automatic “sorry bout that” and retire? No message sending, no venting, no payback, no prosecutions? Without such, I doubt it can be contained to simple political disagreement.
If the Once can’t be impeached for any number of reasons, the effort to right the ship will never be worth it. We need the moderates to pick a side; not doing so means they’ll be obstructions no matter which side is winning.
sol@2,
Well, it’s not as if Ayn Rand and Orwell and Hayek, etc and et al didn’t flat out lay it all out in black and white. Any compromize between good and evil only benefits evil.
ron@6,
Yes, one needn’t be paranoid to see it as very scary. What property rights? Wonder what would have happened if that terrified kid had picked up his father’s assault rifle and let loose a few magazines into those trespassers, as he was fully justified in doing.
Police shooting at the property-owner? Calling in SWAT snipers? Another Ruby Ridge? With mother and brother to defend at home and we coulda had a mini-Waco.
Organized menacing and mass trespass supported by armed police? Every one of those unionized officers (including their superiors all the way to the chief) should be immediately discharged and prosecuted for consorting with “mobs” and encouraging criminal behavior.
Here’s the scariest part: The police could not know beforehand that this crowd would be peaceful vandels, unless they were colluding!
If we don’t severely reprimand police forces for such activity, what’s the message going forward?
Iscariot@8,
That’s getting less funny. Should we expect visits from bussed-in crowds of union thugs to our homes, or midnight knockings by some Dept. of Justice kapos?
I’d like to add Isaiah to the list of people who spoke out against this in advance, “Woe to them who call good ‘evil’ and evil ‘good.’”
Do I detect a note of sarcasm in the last paragraph?
I used to think that those in Washington worked for me. That they looked at me as a fellow citizen who just wanted to live the American Dream of a good, stable job with a future that would allow me to send my children to college and for me to retire comfortably.
I now know that politicians are in it to get a “win”, not to advance any of my beliefs.
That is what the MFM has taught me.
Never was “tu quoque” put to better use!
Well, this oughta be interesting.
Somewhere between the goose and the gander The Right and VDH have finally admitted that it’s not about principle, it’s about revenge. It’s a game made far easier by the current ruling class – Googling YouTubians. And yet, as noted in post #5, any semblance of shared responsibility falls on deaf ears among conservatives who decry the “MSM” as failing in their duties as “the third estate” (sic) because “they have no shame.”
Who is the MSM? What are the duties of the fourth estate? And what deserves shame? As I’ve said here more than once, it’s not about what i’ve done but what I can accuse you of doing. Does hiking the Appalachian Trail deserve shame? Does smearing a president’s daughter, mocking her education and innocence, does that deserve shame? Does editing out applause from a president’s speech in front of our military deserve shame? Does making an abstinence video with your mistress deserve shame? Well, adjudicating ethical or legal lapses of the imperfect among us deserve the righteous indignation of The Right. Unless, of course, you’re David Vitter or John Ensign. (BTW – one guy gets diapered by a Bourbon Street hooker and the other begs his parents for money to pay off the cuckold of his mistress. And yet, there they sit. Why? Because that kind of stuff is nothing compared to getting a 2% break on a mortgage.)
And golf? Please. Here’s the difference between Bush’s golf game and Obama’s golf game. Obama didn’t say he was quitting golf out of respect for the families of fallen soldiers and that get photographed golfing two months later.
As for the media – The White House produces an interview with Kagan and Fox immediately trots our assassination fantasists like Liz Trotta and a host of other banshees to declare it “like Pravda!” and that it is “an outrage!” Now remember, this Kagan interview is on the White House website. It wasn’t cloaked in secrecy or produced in the back room and shuttled off to some ersatz journalist to be slipped into the mainstream dialogue – like Judith Miller parroting Dick Cheney’s WMD dreams or Armstrong Williams being secretly paid to pimp Bush’s education policy.
By all accounts here in conservative land, Fox News is the most powerful, most respected and most believed news source in the universe. And talk radio is the loudest voice you can’t see. So, who is mainstream? Who is deadening journalistic principles? And who is consistently the most inconsistent, hypocritical media organization the universe? I imply. You decide.
You have no standing.
Hail Rush. Go Sarah.
I guess 1 news media (yes and some radio personalities are the same as or equal to all of the newspapers in the country, except maybe the Wall Street Journal; CBS, NPR, NBC, ABC, CNN, all their offshoots; newsweek, time etc. I’d say that’s quite a fete!
What happened to my other one?
So one (1) cable news media (yes, NEWS MEDIA) and some radio personalities are equal to/or way more than every newspaper (except Wall Street Journal); CBS. NPR, ABC, NBC, and all their off shoots; plus almost all magazines – newsweek, time, etc. Funny that the one NEWS MEDIA keeps gaining viewers and so do the radio personalities, while the libs above keep loosing theirs and the newspapers are failing. Most of us could tell them how to gain viewership/readership, but they are toooooo dumb to get it. They are tooooo invested in their lib pushing views to ever want to present both sides of an issue!
Mr. Scuzneck say: “Well, this oughta be interesting.”
But your comment under this promise wasn’t interesting, Mr. Scuzneck. It was more of the same old cherry-picked and exaggeration-laden stories you always use to formulate your little propaganda pieces. And to think I was full of boyish expectation when I read this first line of yours. How could you dash my hopes like that!
Anything in there you disagree with?
It is hard to disagree with gibberish. I will assay one example from the mismash. Here is your description, Mr. Scuzneck, of the quid pro quo BRIBE (aren’t all bribes that way?) given to a UNITED STATES SENATOR. A SENATE BRIBE for God’s sake: “And yet, there they sit. Why? Because that kind of stuff is nothing compared to getting a 2% break on a mortgage.” You seem to be saying such a bribe is of almost no importance. I disagree.
Same old skeeziks, same old crap..just another day..
Same old for sure: “I’m going to prove you wrong, therefore I’m right”. The guiding theme of his political genre and that of the left and Democrats.
What constructive ends can be had from that m.o. – if it’s about antagonism, or an attempt to attract attention, then for what?
“More Kool-Aid sir? Or should I just bring you the bill?
Fine, that Obama you ordered comes to 70 trillion dollars.
Will that be cash or charge?
“So we will shortly see that now as they unrelentingly turn their scrutiny on Barack Obama and his legion of ethical and competency lapses.”
don’t stand on one leg waiting
A couple of things. First, none of the journalists in the past went to journalism schools. Second, you can fool some people some of the time, but you can fool all during election time. Third, you must remember that brilliant lawyers do not run for public office, nor do brilliant constitutional scholars. Congress is a model of Darwinism in reverse with corruption added.
Bush may yet have some blame coming his way – but more second hand that most in the major news media can understand. His Casper Milquetoast brand of “conservatism” directly led to the election of Obama.
However, this oil spill fits perfectly into BP’s global future strategy. From its huge investment in Russian oil fields – that don’t pay well when oil is cheap – to embracing the global warming lie, BP does not want cheap oil. Counting also their contributions to Obama and his fellow Democrats, I can’t say I’m all that confident they want to stop the oil spill any time soon.
Further, the Obama administration’s recent “attack” on friendly Goldman Sachs makes me wonder who else is willing to fall on the sword held out by Obama in his quest to reshape America into Marx’s image
Heh. Whenever I hear someone speak of a Bush “legacy” I simply point to Obama.
Without sounding way too contradictory, here goes: What we need is a non celebrity, non “politicized” executive. Bush, to a certain degree and Obama to a much greater degree brought this on themselves.
Bush, by overselling the Iraqi position via as part of a global war on terror, and Obama by selling the myth of the stimulus/healthcare man-god-president.
Both jumped in front of the camera to sell us politicized highly subjective versions of the truth instead of truths that are objectively observable to all persons.
In the case of Bush, Iraq. Everybody on earth knows that Saudi Arabia was far more complicit and culpable in 9/11 due to their faustian bargain with the salafi/wahabi.
Obama sold the middle on what was nothing more than the long held left wing vision for america–and when he lost that middle and couldn’t regain it, he rammed through anyways. Now that the country is at the breaking point in terms of debt and people can watch the situation in Greece…
Then there was Katrina and the BP oil gusher. Neither man could have prevented either and neither man could have done a better job in response to these things–the reason I say that is that nobody wants these kinds of disasters regardless of their political bent.
It’s easy to critique others mistakes and missteps after the fact. But, Obama did quite a bit of this to Bush….so I guess his karma ran over his dogma.
a non-celebrity, non “politicized” executive…
Sorry, Cincinnatus has left the building;
I wonder if Bill cosby would take the job ?
Nice tongue in cheek. The only thing worse than Washington’s way of doing things—particularly with democrats in charge—is the MSM. The latter will vaguely understand the satiric intent of your article, but its substance will elude them.
Honestly, you guys are a bunch of crybabies. You guys deserve your time in the political wilderness. You’re not fit to lead. GWB showed us that. And whining Palin/Teabag yahoos continue to show us that.
Unfortunately, America has to get its leadership elsewhere. Maybe one day the Republicans will get their act together again. In the meantime, enjoy Rand Paul and Sarah Palin, and keep dreaming while America moves on without you.
My goodness, Anonymoses, are you using the nefarious term “teabag yahoos” to describe loyal Americans? Why do you hate homosexuals, Nony, demonstrated by your denigrating one of their loving adult acts done in the privacy of their own homes. You ought to be ashamed of yourself. Sexual bigots like you could make a person sick.
I’ve always thought people who use the term ‘teabag’ would enjoy it.
Nicely done Doc. Wry humour beats cynicism every time.
I don’t know.
With the media, the universities, and the schools controlled by a well-organized alliance of marxists, black supremacists, anarchists, nihilist, and filo jihadists, and with this alliance covering and protecting the actions of an administration bent on destroying the country…
I don’t know how much space we still have for sarcasm.
We may think that sarcasm is funny, but it could be tragic instead.
You, know, like the last defiant sentence pronounced while the serial killer is choking you.
I don’t know.
Ouch! You scored a hit with me.
We know that bo2 hates America–and England and Israel, for that matter.
I believe he may manage to get Israel destroyed before the end of this term. The only question: will America be mortally wounded–or worse–by then?
Sherab:
Your comment reminded me of Giles Corey, who uttered what I would regard as the most bad-ass last words ever.
It was during the Salem Witch Trials. Giles Corey was accused of witchcraft, tried and convicted, and sentenced to death by “pressing”.
This method of execution involved placing the condemned on the floor, and laying a board over his body. Rocks would then be added to the board, with the ultimate intent of crushing the victim to death under the weight of the stones.
Giles Corey’s final words, before he died: “More weight.”
VDH expertly articulates what I’ve been thinking, albeit with a slightly different twist. Something radical has happened to this country’s media (no I don’t mean Obama’s election). The media has become the ultimate “decider”, if you will of all that “is”. Journalists no longer report the news, instead they’ve become a self-appointed mob of judges, juries, and executioners.
The media rooted for “W’s” demise and characterized everything he did (or didn’t do) as a misstep. They despise this country and like their demoncrap brethren eschew American exceptionalism. Now, like the sharks they are the media are beginning to smell blood over Obama’s mishandling of the gulf crisis. While I am no fan of the POTUS, and I certainly oppose many of his policies, I fail to find glee in blaming OBAMA for his failures.
The Press may have run around blaming Bush for everything but I’m not so sure the country did that. He did win reelection in 2004 after all and he wasn’t on the ballot in 2008. McCain lost that election not Bush and McCain ran a poor campaign. A better GOP candidate might actually have won or made it even closer.
I’m also not sure that the Press’ failure to blame Obama for everything is only because they’re in his camp. They probably are in his camp politically but I think until recently Obama has been perceived as popular with the country in a way that Bush never was (outside of that period of time after 9/11 when his approval ratings were in the 80/90s) so there’s been a tendency for the press to pull its punches a little bit because of that popularity. And we probably can’t discount completely the racial factor either. Obama’s election was supposed to be historical and there’s probably a certain sentiment within the press that it’s important for Obama to succeed in a way that wouldn’t have applied to Bush at all.
We can blame ourselves for the now polluted gulf. I don’t see how they recover from this. But there is a silver lining here: playing Russian roulette with the planet is a bad idea. Hopefully even some retro Republicans might get it this time.
Mr. Hanson, this is not a comment on the above article, but a request for another article. I would like to read your speculation on what would happen if Biden became President.
Thanks,
Joe Smith
Dr. Hanson:
I remain genuinely amazed that anyone still attributes the least bit of journalistic integrity to the MSM. I’m not quite ancient, but I’ve been paying attention to the MSM since the Vietnam era. Please allow me to reminisce about several instances that have clearly indicated the MSM’s utter lack of fairness and honesty for a very long time.
(1) Lyndon Johnson, after Walter Cronkite’s false reporting of the US defeat during the Tet Offensive, is reported to have exclaimed that if he lost Walter Cronkite, he lost America. Cronkite was known as “the most trusted man in America,” and despite that fact that the Tet Offensive was one of the most horrific military debacles in history–to the detriment of the North Vietnamese, not America–many assumed that Uncle Walter merely, honestly, got it wrong, and was guilty of, at worst, letting his emotions get the best of him. Now we have evidence that Uncle Walter was actively aiding the anti-war movement, even offering helicopter transport on at least one occasion for anti-war types.
(2) Access to Soviet Cold War archives and the Venona papers reveals that many in the MSM were more than willing useful idiots in the dissemination of anti-US propaganda provided by the Soviets.
(3) During the 90′s I was sitting in a doctor’s waiting room, reading a copy of Time magazine. I chanced on an editorial on gun control. I wish I had saved that editorial, but the gist of it was that Time considered private gun ownership such an evil that they were no longer going to pretend to be unbiased and would unabashedly agitate for the destruction of the Second Amendment. They did not dance around the point, but said it up front, and kept their word.
(4) MSM election night reporting on the election of 2000 nearly cost George W. Bush the election, and their reporting on the 36 days of legal wrangling that followed revealed an overt level of bias never before seen. In many ways, this was the media’s left wing “coming out.”
(5) Dan Rather, who still believes that the idiotically fake documents he used to try to elect John Kerry were “fake but accurate,” merely revealed what much of the MSM lacked the courage (or blatant stupidity–both?) to do.
(6) Many MSM reporters blathering on and on about Barack Obama swatting a fly during an interview as though he had won the Medal of Honor was a new low in a sea of lows descending to the level of the Marianas Trench.
(7) Newsweek Magazine went a bit lower when it announced that it would no longer maintain even the pretense of covering the news but would instead be a journal of elite leftist opinion, which was what they had been for as long as anyone could remember. At last count, their circulation was already in the Marianas Trench and was still descending.
(8) Newsweek’s Editor, Evan Thomas, called Obama “a god or something,” and wasn’t kidding. No doubt many in the MSM were upset that Thomas scooped them.
(9) The MSM’s election coverage of Obama was so blatant partisan that even some of them were moved to admit it.
(10) Barack Obama and Bill Clinton say that nothing happened regarding Rep. Sestak and what they did was completely legal. Both are renowned liars, and one is a convicted perjurer, yet the MSM is essentially saying “Oh, OK. As long as Obama and Clinton are saying it, it must be true,” if they’re bothering to report on it at all.
(11) Don’t get me started about the New York Times.
It seems self evident that the MSM has been an organ of the hard left for decades. The only recent change is that with the election of Barack Obama, they’ve dropped about 98% of the pretense of journalistic integrity.
We have an imperial Presidency that has evolved to that state over time. We’ve never had a president more in love with that idea than the current one, not even Nixon, LBJ, or FDR. Therefore, the oil leak is his fault because he and his minions have fostered a perception of his omnipotence.
Tough Toenails, Barack.
Yeah. You had to learn that during the Bush years. Because you weren’t yet born for the eight years of the Clinton administration in which you blamed everything on him. You young whipper-snappers always think you’re inventing the wheel. Your propagandizing ancestors were at this “blame [insert person/group here]” back when Germany still had a decent night life.
The Gulf of Obama continues to swell…
You’re good at the refined art of sarcasm, Perfesser Hanson (or is it the art of refined sarcasm) I haven’t seen the like since “President Palin’s First 100 Days” back in May ’09.
For those of you who may have forgotten, here is VDH at his sardonic best
http://article.nationalreview.com/394185/president-palins-first-100-days/victor-davis-hanson
Hi Lennie. Haven’t heard from you since you got PO’d at AT.
Sir,
There must be a technical fault in your web-server. It could not find your font ‘ironic’.
How does that song go? You know. The one that the Marine Band always plays when President Obama makes his entrance…….Oh, Yes.
“Hail to the TWIT. He’s the leader of the land……”
Very soon now, one of the other media empires will start emulating FOX but do a better more serious job of investigative reporting of Democrats. Their ratings will soar. Once that happens, it’s Katy bar the door. The gold rush will be on.
Its not just cynicism, its the actual personal hatred of anyone not GOP, or DEMO, that sits in the White House. President Clinton had plenty of personal issues, but he was not a bad president, same with Reagan.
But the people that did not vote for them could not stand each as president, so the personal attacks and undermining went on, still does today. Actually in the last few years has taken on more intensity.
The United States is a grand experiment in representative republic, limited democracy, freedom, liberty and all those great words we use to describe the goal of self rule. But its being thrown away to satisfy personal political blood lusts.
It is a shame to watch, but history teaches that this is the path taken by most societies, a nail biting beginning, a grand ascension, and a tragic fall.
Alex, I agree completely. For better or for worse, there used to be a sense of “well, he’s OUR President now,” after an election. Now it is simply day one of “Let’s get this bastard out of there.” I don’t know if it is caused by the internet, talk radio and cable news, which get the most extreme of the opinions out there immediately; not just the extreme opinions of the writers and readers of news, but also the extreme opinions on the other side which they find meticulously, and then rant and rave, “look what the far _______ is saying and doing.” I have heard Sean Hannity complain that Obama has never stopped campaigning, but what does he expect with the campaign against Obama, led by the likes of him and Rush began from the first week on.
Connected to this phenomenon is, of course, whatever the latest poll numbers show.
I am not prepared to declare that the Republic is about to fall, but the political atmosphere appears to more toxic across a wider spectrum of the population than at any time since 1968-1970, and it maybe be even more widespread, just less passionate than it was during the height of the anti-war demonstrations.
The only recent break in this phenomenon, since Clinton was elected, happened between 9/11 and shortly after we invaded Iraq. If we are now supposedly in a constant state of war with Islamic terrorists, we also appear to be in a constant state of war with each other. What saves us is that we are usually a bit more reasonable with each other out there while we are doing things in the real world, than we are on the internet, talk radio, etc.
I’m not going to let you get away with that, alex.
Liberals TOLERATED John McCain, as he reached with his tortured, bent arms, ACROSS THE AISLE! You fairly swooned over him. Until he got the nomination. Then, you eviscerated him, as you do to EVERYBODY TO THE RIGHT OF HO CHI MINH!
The priapic, sexually addicted Bypass Bill Clownton was an abyssmall president. The Obamessiah is worse. But, because you are still an emotional child, you will defend the idiots to your death.
Tell you how I feel about the New Tutankamun Of The World(Google this on Youtube.)
If I were in close proximity to the little freak, and a Squeaky Fromm(Repubs don’t have many Squeakys) pulled out a gat and tried to plug Him, I would take the bullet if I could.
This, because, assassinating the leader of the Once Free World, is a BAD THING!
Leftists want to exhume Nixon, McCarthy, Reagan, Jerry Falwell, have a 15 second trial, then behead, stone, draw and quarter, keel haul, mince, sit them in the electric chair for a few years, on L, and eat them.

You ALL deserve, several Nipple Cripples, Swirlies, Dutch Rubs and Public Pantsings…

Postmodernism is fundamentally frivolous. Postmodernists routinely condemn racism and intolerance as wrong but then say that there is no such thing as right and wrong. They are clearly not being serious. Either they do not really believe in moral nihilism or they believe that racism cannot be condemned!
Postmodernism is in fact just a tantrum. Post-Soviet reality in particular suits Leftists so badly that their response is to deny that reality exists. That they can be so dishonest, however, simply shows how psychopathic they are.
Juergen Habermas, a veteran leftist German philosopher stunned his admirers not long ago by proclaiming, “Christianity, and nothing else, is the ultimate foundation of liberty, conscience, human rights, and democracy, the benchmarks of Western civilization. To this day, we have no other options [than Christianity]. We continue to nourish ourselves from this source. Everything else is postmodern chatter.” (EVERY BLOG ON THE INTERNET.)

ON PACIFISM AND BUDDHISM
Communism is the polar opposite of the Sangha (community of the Spirit). It is a counterfeit, taking on the name of ‘the brotherhood of man*.,’ but without God in the equation, the system will eventually breakdown. Much damage and evil works are done before this happens though. Millions of lives are lost and culture and religion destroyed. It is a battle of Light vs. Dark with reincarnated leaders at the helm who have no allegiance to God, the Buddha, the Sangha and the Tao.
(*In John Lenin’s Communist Anthem, IMAGINE, He refers to THE BROTHERHOOD OF MAN.)
The current Dalai Lama admits he is not the thirteenth Dalai Lama. I think this is born out by the fact that ‘the thirteenth’ saw the need for military solutions.
I do know that the U.S. should have come to the defense of Tibet. They did so but it was limited. There are forces within the U.S. government that have always supported communism. Whenever the U.S. tries to help, these strategically placed individuals subvert the plan at the highest levels and at the scene. Right in the midst of a U.S. trained and sponsored counterattack by Tibetan nationals, the U.S. ambassador to India, John Kenneth Galbraith, refused to send U.S. aerial support, dooming the mission.
The United States cannot not be the policeman everywhere in the world, but there are places and times that demand our intercession. Tibetan Buddhism is the closest form of Buddhism to the original teaching and intent of Buddha. The Fire, Light and Love of this religion and people in Tibet is a tremendous sublime power that uplifts and supports the forces of good in that part of the globe, indeed the whole world. The U.S. failed in its Dharma of protecting the Sangha.
How dare you you cannot hold the MESSIAH up to the same merely human standards of paltry mankind. He exists on an exalted plain far above yours and whose morality and standards we are just not capable of understanding.
Lemings. November cometh.
Dear Mr. Hanson,
I cannot tell you what an honor it is to address you.
I’m not being obsequious here.
When I heard Rush Limbaugh read the report that you gave of Al Qaeda, roasting children and feeding them to their parents, I KNEW at that point, you were a Good Man. Not many of us around.
The Pure Evil, that is Atheist/Communism and Islam, is Celebrated by the Godless Left, in the Western World.
Dennis Prager said…There are two races of people in the world, Good People and Evil People. And, I am MOST DEFINATELY A RACIST, THAT BEING THE CASE!
Here is part of my latest blog entry(rest in my link.)
Truth Is A Tough Pill To Swallow…Yin, Yang/Darkness, Light/Evil, Good
4merly_a_person
May 31st, 3:10 The Western World has been spinning out of control at the behest of Neo Marxist Feminists, Pacifists, Warmists, God and Dad and America Haters, Nihilists and Phobic Suicidal Hippies, since their coup in 1968 at the Demon-O-Crats Convention In Chicago.
Leftism is actually a Personality Disorder/Religion and it’s dogma is Political Correctness. (Newspeak from 1984.)
The West has been rudderless for so long, that people on the right seem to hate Christians and Bible believing Jews, as badly as Leftists and Muslims do.
The personality disorder is called, Malignant Narcissism, and expands from there…Cluster B, Histrionic, Borderline, Anti-Social, Passive Agressive…
Some snippets from various sources, to prove my case;
http://www.narcissisticabuse.com/evil.html
EVIL
No one wants to talk about it. But if they do, the talk is of Hitler, torturers, child rapists.(I usually add 15 or so, of Leftist Bogy Men here, you know who they are.)
Is it EVIL to belittle, denigrate, scapegoat, and make fun of someone until they are demoralized, subjugated, and traumatized? Is the verbal and emotional abuser who keeps his victim in suspense and fear an EVIL person? Is the person with the need to control others evil?
According to M. Scott Peck, M.D, psychiatrist and author of The People of The Lie, the answer is yes.
According to Peck, most of us view a situation in light of how we are affected by it and only as an afterthought do we stop to consider how it might affect others involved; we do eventually consider the viewpoint of the other.
Not so those who are EVIL. Theirs is a brand of narcissism so total that they seem to lack this capacity for empathy…. We can see then, that their narcissism makes the evil dangerous not only because it motivates them to scapegoat others, but also because it deprives them of the restraint that results from empathy and respect for others….The EVIL need victims to sacrifice to their narcissism, their narcissism permits them to ignore the humanity of their victims as well. ..The blindness of the narcissist to others can extend beyond a lack of empathy; narcissists may not “see” others at all. (EVIL PEOPLE DO NOT EVEN CONSIDER US HUMAN. WE DO NOT EVEN EXIST TO THEM.)
Ah Victor, I learned all sorts of things from the last election.
I learned:
It’s perfectly ok to a call someone names as long as the media agree with you.
Experience is not a prerequisite to being hired for a government job. As long as you are thin, articulate, are well connected (to people with money)and a member of a protected minority, you’re a shoe in.
Lying is the new truth.
Integrity and sacred honor are passe, now we have foul language and irresponsibility to look to as our examples of leadership.
It is absolutely appropriate to vote for someone based solely on the color or lack there of, of their skin.
A leader does not have to care what those they lead think, a leader is smarter, better and more important than those they lead, see N. Korea,China, Argentina the US et al.
When one works in the film industry one is immediately bless with knowledge (far greater than those puny experts) about ever facet of human experience. These people are expert on everything from raising children to governing countries.
I have been saying this since before the election of He Who Must Not be . Welcome to the party.
Blame for the BP Disaster may be laid directly at the door of the Obama administration. ELizabeth Birnbaum, an Obama appointee, granted drilling permits to BP.
I’m a SPATIAL KIND OF A GUY (Right Brained.)
Many SENSITIVE GAY AND MENSA TYPES FROM THE LEFT, ARE AS WELL.
They LOVE pictures. Well, so do I.
Muslims commit suicide to kill innocent people. Demented Leftists, commit suicide, to RAISE CONSCIOUSNESS, for people they wouldn’t get caught dead, even speaking to.

Christian men, treat their women as CHATTEL(ARCHAIC.)
http://i257.photobucket.com/albums/hh205/dishmael_bucket/realdv.jpg
In conclusion; There is no outrage, left. People on the right will report evil…It gets kicked around and excused by the Left, for about 30 seconds, then it’s gone. And, the Right will report on something else, and the Evil builds in layer upon layer, until we don’t even dare discuss it any more, lest we have our heads handed to us.
Take abortion, for instance(PLEASE!) No, I’m not for criminalizing abortion the Sacrament…Give it back to the states.

The Big Guy, to His disciples… http://niv.scripturetext.com/matthew/10.htm
Jesus Sends Out the Twelve
1He called his twelve disciples to him and gave them authority to drive out evil spirits and to heal every disease and sickness.
If anyone will not welcome you or listen to your words, shake the dust off your feet when you leave that home or town. 15I tell you the truth, it will be more bearable for Sodom and Gomorrah on the day of judgment than for that town. 16I am sending you out like sheep among wolves. Therefore be as shrewd as snakes and as innocent as doves.
21“Brother will betray brother to death, and a father his child; children will rebel against their parents and have them put to death. 22All men will hate you because of me, but he who stands firm to the end will be saved. 23When you are persecuted in one place, flee to another. I tell you the truth, you will not finish going through the cities of Israel before the Son of Man comes.
AND, THE MONEY PASSAGE…
34“Do not suppose that I have come to bring peace to the earth. I did not come to bring peace, but a sword. 35For I have come to turn “‘a man against his father, a daughter against her mother, a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law— 36a man’s enemies will be the members of his own household.’e
PEACE, DUDE!
Obama is destroying America. Everything he touches… destroyed. If there is a God in heaven, which I believe, God has provided a “Delieverer”, and this one will deliver the world from stupidity. Obama is king of it. And nothing destroys like stupidity. Nothing. For this reason, Omigod will be remembered.
“Note that argument was advanced again with the Bush insistence on the unpopular (but ultimately successful) surge in Iraq.”
Successful in terms of winning the battle but you can certainly argue in a war that never should have been fought. Meanwhile the Gulf of Mexico bleeds and nobody can define what the end goal in Iraq or Afghanistan really is. Jimmy Carter is a favorite target of the right wingers but people are beginning to realize he was a true visionary in terms of shifting us away from our dependence on foreign oil and our lust for oil in general.
Obama is certainly lacking in leadership skills. You do miss GW Bush’s dogged determination even if you consider it to be misguided. In the end we get exactly what we want to hear from the corporate media sources. The question is where do you go for the truth? Probably not through the filters of Drudge or Huffington.
Peggy Noonan (representing the MSM) has *finally* figured Obama out. He’s in way over his head. He doesn’t just lack experience and judgment. He’s incompetent.
This isn’t name calling. Just the facts.
Obama will make Jimmy Carter look like George Washington by the time he’s done.
My main theory on Obama? He’s Denzel Washington acting like the black JFK.
Post Racial America?
America was told– by some people– that the election of the first bi-racial president, Barack Hussein Obama, signalled a new era in America and in American politics, a brave new post-racialism era. Those people may have been wrong.
Indeed, instead of being a unifying force of race-neutralism, President Obama has been the most divisive figure in American history on race and on virtually everything else.
The signs were there long before Obama beat Hillary Clinton et al. in the Democrat primaries and won that party’s nomination for the presidency in September, 2008.
Current Court Jester, aka Vice President Joe Biden during his vainglorious run for the Democrat top spot let slip a now-famous description of Obama during that campaign when he said of the junior senator from Illinois that his opponent was the “first mainstream African-American who is articulate and bright and clean and a nice-looking guy.”
Time.com added that “the implication was that the black people who are regularly seen by whites–or at least those who aspire to the highest office in the land–are none of these things,” i.e., neither articulate, bright, clean, or “nice-looking:” http://tiny.cc/qtzca
Nevertheless, inexplicably, Obama added Biden to the ticket . . .

I owe you an apology, Dr. Hanson.
In my very first comment I gave you kudos for reporting on al Qaeda, roasting children and feeding them to their parents. In my sleep last night(where a lot of my inspiration comes from,) the first time I heard of this, it had been reported by Michael Yon.
How I got Victor Davis Hanson, confused with Michael Yon, God only knows. But, I’ll bet you would like to have scooped this story, which is all but invisible in AmeriKa. YABBUTBUSHCHENEYWATERGATE…

Iraq : Muslim Terrorists Cooking Children ?
From Monday, November 27, 2006
Iraq: Children being cooked
Christians like the thousands of frightened Iraqis who face Christmas in the context of escalating anti-Christian violence. In the most shocking report from Iraq we have received, a toddler was kidnapped in Baghdad in October 2006. The mother could not afford to pay the ransom, and so the kidnappers killed the child. They returned the body to the mother. The little child had been beheaded, roasted and was served on a mound of rice. In another incident a 14-year-old Christian boy was held down by his limbs and beheaded, or, as Iraqi Christians have described it, “crucified”. His Muslim attackers called him a “dirty Christian sinner” and chanted “Allahu akbar” (Allah is great).
What I WILL give you a little grief about, though, is to your absolute indifference to the stuff I’ve commented upon.
The World Wide Media is Politically Correct/Sexular Subhumynist/Atheist/West Haters/Jihadi Boosters.
http://www.narcissisticabuse.com/evil.html Good vs. Evil;
The results of indifference, callousness and carelessness are destructive and malignant. In a talk he gave at the White House, Elie Wiesel, concentration camp survivor and philosopher, says that from anger and hatred we can often make a difference, BUT TO BE INDIFFERENT IS EVIL.(MIDDLE OF THE ROAD.)
Once You Have Been Overcome By Evil, YOU WILL NOT, BECAUSE YOU CANNOT COME BACK

The second video, is one of the most beautiful songs ever. Most of you have never heard it, I will wager. Why not? Gram Parsons, had at least ALLUDED TO THE LIGHT, but he couldn’t stay in It.
Sorry,
There’s not enough caffein coursing through me yet, to REMEMBER all I wish to say.
Please notice that Gram Parsons looks like a little girl in his video. And, that goofy jumpsuit, with marijuana leaves all over it, and the pork pie hat.
I’ll bet, Gram would have been a Great Man, had he lived. What a TALENT!

In my quest to receive a little justice for my children and myself, I found Femarxist Martha Coakley’s e-mail address. Martha had been the AG of Gayfemarxorganachewshits, before she got the stuffing kicked out of her by the Ultra Conservative, Family Friendly MAN, Scott Brown, in her bid for Congress. Martha the Succubus, ignored my messages for over a year and finally blocked my address.

I parted with the Neo Marxist/Stalinist/Maoists, physically, in 1975. I got sane(somewhat) and sober. But, I ALWAYS KNEW, they hated America.
How can it be a shock that they Installed an absolute abomination who reflected their VALUES, or lack there of.
Sometimes it takes somebody from OUTSIDE the family to point us in the RIGHT direction. But, I actually believe, that this time, we’ve gone too far, WAY TOO FAR!

Barack Obama and the CIA: why does President Pantywaist hate America so badly?
By Gerald Warner Politics Last updated: April 24th, 2009
If al-Qaeda, the Taliban and the rest of the Looney Tunes brigade want to kick America to death, they had better move in quickly and grab a piece of the action before Barack Obama finishes the job himself. Never in the history of the United States has a president worked so actively against the interests of his own people – not even Jimmy Carter.
Obama’s problem is that he does not know who the enemy is. To him, the enemy does not squat in caves in Waziristan, clutching automatic weapons and reciting the more militant verses from the Koran: instead, it sits around at tea parties in Kentucky quoting from the US Constitution. Obama is not at war with terrorists, but with his Republican fellow citizens. He has never abandoned the campaign trail.
We have, Healthcare REFORM, Wall Street REFORM, Banking Reform, Femarxist FAMILY and GENDER REFORM(boys into girls, men into wimmin, Same Sex Marriage to replace..), Immigration REFORM.
