3. For much of his long life, a man like the now canonized late Sen. Robert Byrd made the early lives of men like Justice Clarence Thomas miserable. Contrast the present eulogies for Byrd with the past Senate hearings over Thomas.
4. President Obama gave a long, rambling speech on illegal immigration and did not mention the Mexican government once. In fact, the word “Mexico” appeared one time — in connection with a human interest story about an immigrant success story. A man from Mars might have thought the problem was as much Canadian as Mexican.
5. The federal reaction to the BP spill — weeks of initial inaction characterized by shunning offers of international help, coupled with a blanket moratorium on drilling, including the safer sorts quite unlike the BP well — will eventually cost trillions of dollars in costs that will dwarf the financial toll of Katrina.
6. We know now there is no shelf life to “Bush Did It.” If unemployment hits 12% two years from now, we will be told we are lucky to have Obama saving us from the 20% rate that would have otherwise followed from the Bush legacy. It will be as if in 2006 Bush was still blaming Clinton for eight years of appeasement that led to 9/11. It will never cease; we accept that now. In 1944, FDR was still running on the Hoover depression of 1929. So it shall be again.
T – 3 months and 29 days to election day.

We can’t tell yet what they’ll try to pull this November, but by 2012, they intend to have control of Free Speech one way or another — whether by control of the Internet — Banning Political Books and TV Ads, and by “subsidizing” Newspapers. Let’s not forget about the “Kill Switch” which can be pulled at his whim — especially if it looks like he’ll lose — he’ll call it “national security” no doubt.
This is a Gangster Government like we’ve not seen in our lifetimes. To them the Law is a joke and, as opposed to dealing with Iran, all options are on to table — against the rest of us.

Listen, we’ve had plenty of notice with the Kenneth Gladney beating and Pajamas Media coverage of the dismissal of the voter intimidation case against the New Black Panthers. Take a hint from the riots in Europe that occur whenever there’s a climate change conference or the G-20 meet. I really do think that SEIU attempted to influence the election of Scott Brown, but were unable to change the outcome with their methods. Violence is actually their preferred method.
We have to do something concrete to ensure that the elections, both 2010 and 2012, will not be marred by violence. Should it involve the National Guard? We just had a close call, 5-4, with the right to protect our lives in our own homes. The founders’ calculus is still working for us.
I’ve been beating this drum for a while: we MUST take concrete action to ensure than the elections can take place peacefully.

In regards to Number 2, Steven Chu (“no more agriculture in California”), I drove up the 5 FWY to Seattle last week. It was stunning to see all the brown, unproductive land.
On previous trips, I was amazed by the miles of verdant, fruitful fields and groves. The vast tracts of of green you could see from the freeway were beyond description, it looked like Heaven on Earth.
I live in southern California and knew nothing of this. According to the roadside banners posted by ranchers and farmers, Feds were diverting water to sustain something called a Delta smelt. This started under the Bush administration (yet another reason not to defend his legacy of failure).
And like many Bush policies, Obama continues it with enthusiasm.
I could only see this loss of productivity in economic terms. The state of California is flat on it’s a$$ right now. How many jobs, how much cash, how much tax revenue is being lost? How many schools and senior centers and police departments aren’t being funded because the Feds are destroying amazingly productive land?
What is Senator Barbara Boxer (up for reelection) doing to restore the lost revenue?
Have a look at Roman Polanski/John Huston/Jack Nicholson. Faye Dunaway, et al in the film Chinatown. And tell yourself this IS NOT a script for what you notice now. Plus ca change… And then regale yourself with the film Cabaret. Sometimes film really is the best teacher if only people will understand and apply the lessons.
What is happening in central California truly is a man-caused disaster. And beyond the banning of all off-shore drilling, the EPA has now de-facto shut down oil refineries in Texas.
My question is, what would the response be if Texas (and the rest of us) decided to ignore the EPA? And can the farmers and residents of central California band together and force open the valves and start pumping the water on their own?

They have not shut the plants down they are making them obtain new permits as they don’t like the variable permits the Texas version of the EPA allowed. At this point they are allowing the plants to continue to operate while going through the permitting process. What I find mind boggling about what the EPA did is that the variable permits Texas allowed was a form of Carbon Trading. If one side of the plant gave off excess pollutants the other side had to make up for it. The FED must be pi**ed that they aren’t getting any taxes for it.
After the construction of the Los Angeles Aquaduct, and as the Owens Valley started to dry up, there was a campaign of vandalism by some to wreck the aquaduct infrastructure and prevent L.A. from getting the water.
It did not play out well for the previously prosperous growers of the valley.
As an example of how much water Los Angeles was taking, 100 years ago, Owens Lake at the southern end of the valley, had steamer service across it; today it is a “dry lake” that generates tremendous dust-clouds during periods of high wind.
I read the Constitution today and it explicity says taht when a government of the governed is oppressive and no longer represents the best interests of the governed, the it is the right of the governed to overturn and replace said government! It is our duty and obligation as freedom loving citizens of this country to kick their a$$es out. If MILLIONS of citizens march on DC or Sacramento, they either listen or clean out their desk and hit the road!

You are absolutely right. I saw it last year when driving from the Bay Area to P Springs and back. Hannity came to California and did some shows about the destruction of irrigation to save the smelt. It has caused massive farm unemployment in CA and higher prices on fruits and vegetables and far more imports. It is again, the environmentalists as Nanny/Big Daddy allied with politicians pandering to PC and who simply do not care about economic self-sufficiency.

During the campaign one of the grand unanswered (or at least un-responded) questions was “what exactly is a ‘community organizer’?” I’ve long regarded a community organizer as a person who (kindly) “enfranchises the disenfranchised,” or (unkindly) “gives direction to the clueless.” A big fish in a small pond, corrupted by the power he wielded and having lived so much of his life through that prism, Obama has come to believe that ALL people are as clueless as are those who need a community organizer.
From that, it is not a big step to realizing that what you stated is exactly Obama’s position: he really does think that he knows better than you what you need, because that’s all he himself has ever known.
Absolutely correct. The US is now and for the foreseeable future the flywheel of the global engine. We probably don’t deserve to be, but we are. Someday logically, India or China, with their greatly larger populations may displace us, but that will take a lot of societal evolution within either of them and a lot of dysfunction within us. And, if the flywheel fails, we better all hope it spins down instead of flying off the crankshaft.

But I believe that even this level of non-response will not be enough to satisfy The One in his never-ending quest for personal adulation and Utopian perfection. Here is what I think is likely to happen;
1. Joe Biden will become increasingly abusive and outright hostile to anyone who even speaks to him, let alone anyone who he sees as disagreeing with him or his boss. About the time Joe uses a Louisville Slugger on somebody, Al Capone style, The One will just laugh and make jokes about Joe’s “common touch”.
2. Holder will openly call for “proportional voting”, Napolitano will openly call for tea partiers, the NRA, and the Cato Institute to be redefined as “domestic terror organizations”, and Ken Salazar and Steven Chu will demand the death penalty for anyone operating any power-generation system other than Holy Wind or Holy Sun. The excuse for all of the above will be “change we need”.
3. Any African-American conservative, or even moderate, will be Borked by the “forces of Good” if they so much as try to run for dogcatcher. (J. Kenneth Blackwell knows all about this, already, I suspect, after his Ohio gubernatorial run as a Republican in 2006.)
4. The One will accept only one “solution” to our problems with Mexico; instant amnesty and (Democrat Party) voter registration for anyone coming across the Rio Grande from the south. Please note that this will include jihadists, to avoid “profiling”.
5. The BP spill bill will be paid by the passage of another progressive dream- a 1000% tax on each liter of motor fuel sold to the public in this country. (They’ll go to KMS to make the bite seem smaller.) This will make gasoline too expensive for poor people, who will end up on public transportation, another liberal icon. It will also pretty much kill the airline industry, which isn’t feeling too well today anyway. The elite’, of course, will hit the taxpayer up for the fuel in their limousines and private jets.
6. The progressives will go past BushDidIt to “It’s all Reagan’s fault”. After all, he’s dead, and can’t talk back, and besides, they’ve hated him for the last half-century. In their minds, it’s payback time.
7. Argentina in the Falklands will provoke sanctions against Great Britain. No matter what Israel does, they will be hit with sanctions. Turkey will not only get a free hand in Cyprus, they’ll get the green light to go into northern Iraq after the Kurds. If Venezuela tries to take over the northern half of South America, we will speak up on their behalf at the UN. When Pakistan takes India on, we will “caution” India not to try too hard to defend itself. And when China goes after Taiwan, we will say that it is “outside of our area of concern”, echoing the remark made by a U.S. diplomat in 1949 re the Korean Peninsula that set off the Korean War. The difference being, this time we won’t come to the rescue of the people we’ve hung out to dry.
8. Gitmo will be seen as a great “vacation spot”- for CEOs who don’t sign on to The One’s next round of corporate “makeovers”.
9. They’ll stop the Predator strikes as a “gesture of goodwill”. (I’m surprised they haven’t done it already, in fact.)
10. They’ll say something even stupider, on the principle I have used in this response; just when you try to imagine the most ridiculous, idiotic, or just profoundly stupid thing The One and his minions could do- they immediately go out and do something even more moronic, not to mention bizarrely improbable. Partly because their dogma demands it, but also because they think it’s fun.

This administration is a terrible mess. The President “B.O.” is a stranger to the truth with a rappidly dimishing number of supporters. But if she (or he, or whatever) “slept with” two men voluntarily, either separately, together, or one after the other in succession, that’s a different thing altogether, legally speaking. (Hint; in most states, it’s only illegal if money changed hands either way for “services rendered”.)

I don’t recall either of the guys who were involved with Haley saying that she forced the relationship. I do, however, recall the “friends” of the woman who accused Gore telling her to keep her mouth shut, or else “the world will be destroyed by global warming”.
This tells me that even her (progressive) friends understood that Gore’s (alleged) actions stepped over a line in the law.

I5 traveler – VDH needs to update “Fields Without Dreams”. So much has changed since he wrote that excellent book. Even if we had the water we wouldn’t we still end up with cheap produce, meat & seafood grown in counties with far less restrictive standards than us? If I am not mistaken some of our markets dried up because of cheap imports, not water rationing. I believe a lot of the crops grown in the Sacramento Valley ( rice, almonds, plums/prunes) ends up in export markets as well. Love to hear from farmers on this.
If no one else will say it bluntly, then I will. President Obama is on a mission to reduce our country to second world status. All of his actions, and those of his cohorts in Congress, are directed at achieving that goal. He is succeeding. Perhaps the upcoming elections will derail this plan somewhat, but great damage has already been done and will likely continue for a few more years.

I was talking to my niece recently about her family life back home in China. She said her grandparents were prosperous merchants who’s property was confiscated by the government during the Cultural Revolution. Mao’s revolutionary vision for China required that all “reactionaries” be reeducated or eliminated. Her parents toiled in government-run industry until the Second Revolution of the late 1980′s when the government “sold” the business to her father. Her family’s financial situation rapidly improved as the business prospered; ergo: her parents can now afford to send their children to America to pursue their MBAs.
As my niece was speaking a shutter went up my spine as I realized that America is in the early stages of a cultural revolution not unlike what Mao did to China. Mao’s goal was to destroy the old Chinese economic, social, and political structures by the force of the government and to replace them with a radical collectivist model. IMHO, I believe Obama and the leftist true believers in his administration are implementing a similar strategy for our nation.

I was talking to my new niece from China this weekend about her family. She explained that her grandparents lost everything during the Cultural Revolution under Mao. You may recall that Mao used the power of the state to force upon his people his radical vision to transform China into the world’s largest collectivist state. Anyone who resisted the teachings in Mao’s Little Red Book were condemned as reactionary bourgeoise and sent to re-education farms where they were either brainwashed or murdered.
My niece’s parents grew-up poor and were thankful to find jobs in government-controlled (read: unprofitable) businesses. It wasn’t until the late 80′s and the Second Revolution that their financial prospects improved dramatically. The radical Maoist experiment in national transformation collapsed under its corruption and incompetence and was replaced by a pro-free enterprise communist regime. Her father was able to purchase the business where he had worked for over 20 years. The business prospered under his ownership to the point that they were able to send all their children to America to study for their MBA degrees. As my niece shared her story I suddenly felt a cold chill run up my spine. It suddenly struck me that Obama’s efforts to transform America into a collectivistic society was disturbingly reminiscent of what Mao had attempted in China. Dr. Hanson has clearly and repeatedly enumerated in his columns the full-frontal assault by Obama on the traditional American culture so I will not repeat them. We know them well. What we do not know so well is the relentless attack of faceless and nameless bureaucrats on the regulations, laws, and policies across the federal government. Step-by-step the constitutional republic of America that we know and cherish is being erased and replaced with a social democracy model based on leftist ideology much like that revealed in Mao’s Little Red Book. It is doomed to fail as all collectivist governments have failed throughout history. But the damage being done right now by Obama’s leftist agenda will take a terrible toll on our liberties and our fortunes.
The leftist agenda of the Obama administration must be stopped. George Santayana said it best, “Those who do not learn from history are doomed to repeat it.” If not us, who? If not now, when?
