As always, VDH does an outstanding job of expressing sentiments that go to the heart of the situation in the world today. Most particularly, I am referring to the take on the Persian pursuit of the nuclear program. While trackbacks are not done here, I follow up his words (and cite them) with recent information concerning the race to go nuclear throughout the Middle East. VDH question: will we turn this problem over to our children? Salient, and frightening. Thanks, and keep up the good work.

As much as I like President Bush's performance, he has failed in two critical areas: expanded US oil and oil substitutes production and border control.

VDH's "It's the Oil Stupid" is so, so obvious to me that it drives me wild that the Dems are opposed to this. Open up ANWR, FL coast, build new US refineries and get serious about alternate fuels besides corn ethanol.

Brazil - of all places - is now no longer dependant on foreign oil because of its ten year sugar cane ethanol program. Why the US doesn't have a better one than Brazil is a mystery to me.

And when we lose control of the border and the absence of the rule of law invades our culture, that's the beginning of the end of the American Republic.

Failure to deal with both problems strikes me as pure insanity and we have no political will to solve either horrific problem right now.

I wonder if this is representative of what others are experiencing: No environmental argument could move me to get rid of any one of my four suburbans. Recently, however, I bought three Hondas. Now, every time I get in my Civic, I take a perverse pleasure in the notion that it is just my little way of thumbing my nose at the Islamic fascists. "The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked: who can know it?"

Willy Shake....I hadn't heard that observation of Will Rogers. Thanks, I've use it twice already this morning; it has application to personal relationships as well as foreign.

I was at dinner the other night with a table full of liberal academics--grad students and professors in the humanities. It was fascinating to listen to their disbelief that Al Qaeda would want to reconquer Spain! Utopians one and all, they simply can't quite seem to grasp that the world is a place still tragically governed by the laws of human nature--where selfish people will always try to take what does not belong to them.

How to get them to see that diplomacy, therefore (in the words of Will Rogers), is simply "the art of saying 'Nice doggie!' until you can find a rock."

I'm not sure that the utopians on the left will ever understand this. Yet amidst all of the things we have to be gloomy about, perhaps there are signs for hope--as in news accounts like this one saying that the Brits feel embarressed by the behavior of their military during the hostage crisis. GOOD. I'm glad they're ashamed; it means the West is not dead yet.

Old farmer, I have followed you since the postings on Free Republic. One late night I even posted back and forth with you, although my high school Latin was no match for your classical mastery.
But as to the Re-Conquista you make reference to now in Spain, I can only say that we are witnessing the same here in our own southwest. It is a quiet peaceful retaking, for now. But you know, and I know, that it will take only a spark to ignite into an inferno.
You should not be so timid about confronting this. I suspect that the time is nearer than both of us think.
I've already made plans to move north. So be it.
My great grandfather, a '49er, is probably rolling over in his grave.
I am approaching old age and don't have the fight in me.
Words, is that all we have left?
