The New Reactionaries
Our New Regressivism
About fifteen years ago, many liberals began to self-identify as progressives—partly because of the implosion of the Great Society and the Reagan reaction that had tarnished the liberal brand and left it as something akin to “permissive” or “naïve,” partly because “progressive” was supposedly an ideological rather than a political identification, and had included some early twentieth-century Republicans like Teddy Roosevelt and Herbert Hoover.
But twenty-first century progressivism is not aimed at political reform. There is no new effort at racial unity. There is not much realization that we are in a globalized, rapidly changing, high-tech economy or that race and gender are not as they were fifty years ago. Instead, progressivism has become a reactionary return to the 1960s—or even well before. The new regressivism seeks to resurrect the machine ethos of Mayor Daley, the glory green days of the Whole Earth Catalog, the union era of George Meany, Jimmy Hoffa, and Walter Reuther, the racial polarization of the old Black Panther Party and the old Al Sharpton, and a Walter Cronkite, John Chancellor, or Peter Jennings reading to us each evening three slightly different versions of the Truth.
The New Old Chicago
Barack Obama is trying to turn back the way of politics to the era of the pre-reform Chicago machine. He was the first presidential candidate to renounce campaign-financing funds since the law was enacted. He opposes any effort to clamp down on voting fraud. Even his compliant media worries that the president’s current jetting from one campaign stop to another in the key swing states is a poorly disguised way to politick on the federal government’s dime. Bundlers are, as was the ancient custom, given plum honorific posts abroad. Obama has held twice as many fundraisers as the much reviled George Bush had at a similar point in his administration. Obama supporters now target large Romney givers and post their names with negative bios on websites, as if we are back to Nixon’s enemies of the people. Websites sprout up that go after administration critics in Agnew style, but without the latter’s self-caricature. The 2008 criticism about ending the revolving door, lobbyists, and pay-for-play renting out of the Lincoln bedroom was, well…just examine the career of a Peter Orszag. An embarrassed media keeps silent about the new reactionary ethics, apparently on the premise that not to would endanger four more years of the “progressive” agenda. On matters of presidential style, we are likewise retro, as Obama sets records for playing golf, and in Marie Antoinette style the First Family bounces between Vail, Aspen, Martha’s Vineyard, Vegas, and Costa del Sol, often in separate jets, as if we, the people, receive vicarious joy from catching glimpses of the Obama versions of Camelot. We have Kennedy wannabes without their own Kennedy money.
Earth Day Forever
On matters of energy, Obama has regressed to the Earth Day mindset of the 1970s, when we were reaching “peak” oil, and untried wind and solar were soon to be the new-age remedy for soon-to-be-exhausted fossil fuels. Add up the anti-empirical quotes from Obama himself, Energy Secretary Chu, and Interior Secretary Salazar (inflate your tires, “tune up” your car, look to U.S. algae reserves, let energy prices “skyrocket,” hope gas rises to European levels, don’t open federal lands even if gas reaches $10 a gallon, etc.) and, in reactionary fashion, we are time-machined back to the campus quad of the 1970s. In this la la world of Van Jones, evil oil companies supposedly connived to stifle green energy and hook us on fossil fuels, inferior energies that have nothing to recommend them. It is as if the revolutions in horizontal drilling, fracking, and discoveries of vast new reserves never occurred, as if Exxon and Chevron dodge taxes in a manner that Google and Amazon never would, as if efficient smaller gas engines, clean gas blends, and pollution devices have not made the American car both clean-burning and economical beyond our imagination forty years ago. The Obamians, frozen in amber, really believe oil is about to run out, “tuned up” internal combustion engines powering underinflated tires pollute as they did in the 1920s, and Teapot Dome U.S. oil companies need to be “crucified”—as regional EPA director and Obama appointee Al Armendariz, in fact, boasted. So we borrow hundreds of millions of dollars to subsidize money-losing solar and wind plants, while putting federal lands rich in oil and gas off-limits to companies eager to pay royalties, hire thousands, and supply the U.S. with its own energy—and all for a regressive ideology. Few see that Solyndra really is the new Teapot Dome.

I think it also spelled a move from a focus on positions on things like civil rights and freedom to simply bigger, more socialistic government.
Progressivism really is simply just a nicer name for fascism. They want the government to control every aspect of your life.
The gay marriage debate is a great example – rather than trying to simply change public’s opinion on it, most of the war has been fought in the government, without the public’s consent, forcing gay marriage on the country, instead of slowly getting it to happen because the majority of people want it to happen.
Liberals/Progressives/Democrats were NEVER for Freedom and Civil Rights. On BOTH counts youre ack basswards. The Civil War and the Civil Rights battles of teh 60s were both fought by Democrats, one to the death.
I’ve been calling it “Regressivism” for 15 years. No thinking person should concede the term “progressivism” to these fuddy duddy throwbacks without at least employing scare quotes.
Once again, the inestimable Dr. Hanson has summed up the subject with deadly clarity.
I believe that is supposed to be ‘bass ackward’ …
Calling a rabble of marxists liberals is as outrageous as the soviets labeling the old communist puppet state of Germany a ‘democracy’.
Its not just splitting hairs. Words have meaning. Or else debate has to come to violence and force.
Liberality is by definition generosity, fairness, attentitive to the law. It springs from a Christian tradition.
The 1963 Civil Rights act was carried by more ‘r’ party than ‘d’ party people. The 13th and 15th amendments were Republican. By any useful definition to me liberal measures.
Conservatism, God and Country fidelity is loyalty, it is my dads favorite aphorism of measure twice cut once.
The immigration debate is one of the few examples of a true conflict between liberalism and conservatism. Generosity toward refugees from failed cesspools versus a conservative we cant save the whole world mentality.
The gargantuan federal edifice is by no means a liberal construction. If anything it is regressive.
The old communes were the very opposite of central control. It was a ‘go live your own life’ idea. All welcome. No one demonized for skin color.
Socialism is when the government or managing entity care at least ‘equally’ for the masses and not just the wealthy….the managing entity wants the masses to have the best and affordable education and healthcare that can be had because that makes their nation great…(this can be done by allowing the student to pay back their education by not leaving America for a certain period of time (keeping the talent here); also, they don’t educate anyone before they educate their own people…. But generally they care about the futures of all their citizens…
Fascism is when the managing entity (corporations) care more for those corporations and the wealthy, but very little about the rest of society… This is what we have had for the past 30 years or more, and why the masses are falling behind in every way – while the corporations are making record profits and the wealthy Millionaires are now wealthy Billionaires and yet still receiving government handouts (tax breaks) aka: welfare for the wealthy…
Nice try. Socialism especially Marxism is always about semantics. When they are not in charge the police and military are called oppressive agents of the state and things like social services are considered to be agencies of the people as if there would suddenly not be a need for police. Put the Marxist in charge and now the police are concerned with counter-revolutionaries and the state is very much in charge of that piece of government power. Your definition of socialism and fascism is of a piece.
Of course you are pro-Obama so are not calling his policies fascist but progressive. The truth is he really quite the fascist and fascism can be a softer version than what was created under Nazism. Its basically national and not international socialism and can be related to Fabian socialism.
What makes the Obamamists particularly galling is their outlook that corruption is a fact of normal life and that if the socialists can achieve a visible level of corruption its proof of socialist ascendancy and we should all cheer it. Gee thanks K. Its a wonderful alternative you’ve got.
In the 20th Century, Socialism and Communism killed over 100M people; what are you saying, “Let’s give it another try”?
“Fascism is when the managing entity (corporations) care more for those corporations and the wealthy, but very little about the rest of society…”
Get back to us when you learn some history, ‘mkay?
“Fascism is when the managing entity (corporations) care more for those corporations and the wealthy, but very little about the rest of society… ”
Couldn’t you at least read the article before you post your Progressive talking points? If you had you would see how lame your comments are when held up against the light of Dr Hanson’s facts and logic.
So just how do you see the corporations as the “managing entity”? No business can force anyone to do anything. All they do is invest money of their stockholders (which includes almost everyone except the chronically poor held down by government programs) in facilities and other assets, hire people, obey government regulations, create products, attempt to sell them into a free marketplace and pay taxes when they do.
You live in a fantasy world and your inability to see things the way they are keep the Progressives in power and our country on the downward spiral that you try to attribute to “corporations”. This is why we need limited government – because people like KELLI2L get to vote.
Quite the contrary on fascism. In Nazi Germany, Fascist Italy, and Fascist Japan the government utterly controlled corporations. Fascism requires unlimited state power over the economy. Kinda like where we’re heading.
Hitler and Mussolini were Socialists before they became known as Fascists. After you learn a little history, lecture me again on what a caring bunch Socialists have always been, boy. Lenin, Stalin, Mao, Castro, Obama….etc. The list is endless. ABO2012
You have a very confused viewpoint on these two Leftist & related political philosophies.
Just a little confused aren’t we. Clue: the word “corporatism” associated with fascism does NOT mean the same as corporate in your sense. It has nothing to do with making the wealthy richer. It derives from Latin – i.e. “body”, as in the grouping of society into different corps.
Fascism is a command economic ideology the same as communism. Read about how and why the VW beetle was first designed and produced. Perhaps you could even try an original thought….
Big hint – a “radical” right-wing ideology is not going to be premised on appealing to a group ideology. As soon as it is focussed on the “good” of the “group” (e.g. Aryans) you know you are dealing with a left/progressive/regressive ideology. The right by definition care more about the impact on the individual and maximising the benefit to the group by maximising the benefit to the maximum number of individuals. The left couldn’t care less about the individual and hasn’t the intellectual maturity to recognise that the “group” is nothing more than the sum of the individuals in it.
We don’t see ourselves as “masses” in need of “management”. We are free citizens. We are the ones who do the hard work, take the risks and come up with the ideas that generate the wealth that fund the government.
Without us, government eventually grows to the point where it controls everything. Even our thoughts. So protecting our economic freedom, also protects your political freedom. If you understood history, you would not stop thanking us.
The goal of progressives is to eliminate opposition in purge after purge. If any opposition remains, plan B is to make a whipping person of those oppositions.
“Socialism especially Marxism is always about semantics”. “ The means are the means, to squander each and every day in cognitive dissonance, embroil everyone in interminable sermonistic pseudo-moralizing. And have so-called progressives set the table of discussion. And find the suckers to do it outside of the inner workings of the machine. The ones who imbibe the perverse pseudo-sacraament, and go and do likewise.
“We don’t see ourselves as “masses” in need of “management”. We are free citizens. We are the ones who do the hard work, take the risks and come up with the ideas that generate the wealth that fund the government. “
Therefore the principle of a government that “rules by consent of the governed” must be inverted 180 degrees to seem as though our very right to exist is transmuted instead into a benevolent gift of a government monopoly on everything.
“The rights of man, come not from the benevolence of the state, but by the hand of god.”
Gay marriage? Mr Hanson states that “race and gender (he means sex) aren’t what they were fifty years ago.” Now that is a statement that ought to make you stop and wonder about people who are not learning from history. Race and sex are what they were 50 years ago and 50,000 years ago. As long as nobody genetically re-engineers our DNA, race and sex today are what they are going to be a thousand years from now.
Another home run from VDH.
Progressives have been legislating through the courts and activist judges for decades because they know a majority of American voters don’t support their policies.
It’s only when SCOTUS indicates it may uphold the constitution that the progs question its legitimacy or push for a work-around strategy a la Schumer.
Hanson is far too quick to take a victory lap around the track. I see no mass exodus away from the Progressive zeitgeist. Liberals continue to have a grip on everything that matters, always and everywhere. When push comes to shove the people still vote for the enabling of every leftwing initiative and swallow every leftwing trope spewed by every leftwing politician in every district in the land. We should not claim that the Liberal/Progressive beast is slain until the day arrives that such utter abominations such as the monster Hussein and his gaggle of fellow fascists never again see the light of day.
I agree: I literally expect the insane give-away and micromanage Federal bureaucracy alongside the larger political correctness to continue on into the future until the country is, for all intents and purposes, destroyed. The liberals will go down with the ship clutching noble papers they are holding in front of an immigrant’s still puzzled face as they both sink together.
PC is particularly dangerous since it posits things that are not seen in reality, haven’t been seen in history in the last 1,000 years, and cannot be proven – namely that immigrants from the Third World will continue the tech innovations of the English and Americans 1700-1990 and their social innovations that are, in the end, despite cries of racism to the contrary, institutionalized notions of the greater good.
If PC had not so infected America, perhaps there would’ve been a chance, as new immigrants wouldn’t get a lawyer and organize an ethnic lobby first thing, or be a living embodiment of something for nothing. But maybe this old immigrant was merely a false-positive due to relatively manageable numbers in the past, but also with that massive lack of foreign aid on our own soil and PC.
Because when has there ever been a notion of the ‘greater good’ in the Third World? If you think that you haven’t been there. Combine that with PC and the future of an America where 90% of our immigrants come from the Third World, and you have, politically, a Tower of Babel where social progress, real social progress, will be frozen due to bankruptcy eventually.
The effortless productivity and creativeness will decline and vanish eventually – technology will hit a ceiling and spread sideways in an illusion of wealth. Monies which would have gone to such things as NASA and R and D for tech will be spent on senseless social programs to make the unequal, equal, as if you could ever do that with a de facto Third World population of 60% by 2060.
It’s nice to pretend and imagine everyone in the world is as good as everyone else. When one can afford to do so and come back home, it’s fine. What has happened is that we have brought those people home with us and it’s not fine. Despite lamebrain ‘proofs’ of Indian and Korean software engineers that are in fact the cream of their own countries and who are mimicking, not creating, our own tech.
Anyone with half a brain who takes a solid and realistic look at the world around them, who has been to Guatemala City, Rio, Cairo, Djakarta and more, who then takes that, puts it in America and extrapolates out the immigration policies of Europe and America can see that the world is headed for a dark age.
Think, who is it who’s REALLY been a de facto defender of South America’s shores all these years, and Europe since WW II? Who is it who is REALLY protecting the entire continent of Africa, through the international criminal courts, from their own selves? Who saved Europe and Asia from empire in WW II? What happens when that country’s energies are gone, spent?
PC is the single most dangerous entity America has ever faced, because it demands we find the solutions to problems, due to it’s crazy misreading of the phrase, ‘all men are created equal,’ in the exact spots those solutions don’t exist. The greatest irony in all this is that the very people who think they are benefiting the most by running away from their problems instead of standing and fighting, will be the most to suffer in the end. They benefit from a strong, exceptionalist culture, not we from them.
Think again, on the liberal Left, a lack of creative innovations and high prison populations among blacks doesn’t mean a problem within the black community, but within the white community. The solution, more minorities and diversity. It’s a losing proposition.
Think, the more largely white, European civilizations are successful, the more evidence of their racial notions of supremacy, exploitation, colonization and oppression. Despite the fact that the institutions these so-called racists created enabled Gandhi and MLK to flourish rather than disappear into a death camp as they surely would’ve in a real country dedicated to hating non-whites.
In fact, there is not one mainstream institution in America today organized around white people, but who are the supposed racists. For that, you have to go to the anti-racists, and there is America’s future. The same one Haiti is finding doesn’t work when you run out of white people to blame. By the time that happens in America in 200 years, Africa will be an order of magnitude worse than today, South America fighting its own wars against the Chinese and perhaps Africans, Europe and North America swallowed up by a tide of failure. That failure will roil and agitate and eventually settle down into a sad simulacrum of the Third World with which it was populated, complete with failing infrastructure, no lending libraries, which you still can’t find in Rio, the home of the Olympics and a city of 10 million people, and shanty towns, put up by force of will and babies. This is the world’s future, not Obama’s insane confidence and love of all things non-white and non-Western that will turn out space stations and superconductors and orbital arrays to feed us power.
You think what I’m saying is racist? Well, continue to ignore your history books and newspapers and sue me or put me in jail as would be the case in Canada or England. We are undone – admit it.
There is only one solution: end all immigration today, and kick out every illegal there is. Maybe, maybe, we will recover. I doubt it, but try, And don’t blame me when Texas and California secede to Mexico and then immediately start sneaking out again, just when Idaho and N.Dak started breathing sighs of relief Their federal revenues would stop going to make cardboard space stations. To extrapolate out any other scenario, now THAT’s science-fiction.
If you can prove to me that 2,000 Aztecs marching into the heart of Spain in 1520 and bringing the whole structure down while enslaving the population is an equations that ends: Spanish – equal, I’ll admit I’m wrong. If you can show me why modern downtown Cairo is not a pitch perfect analogue of Blade Runner, with internet cafes and jet overflights next to jury-rigged electrical systems outside of high-rises full of cobwebs and lobbies that are scoured and destroyed with people cooking over open fires on the roofs in medieval garb, I’ll admit I’m wrong. If you can prove to me that the Olympic’s Rio de Janeiro doesn’t in fact have mountains of garbage going back decades, thrown there carelessly, and which have avalanched and killed sanitation attempts to clean it up, I’ll admit I’m wrong. I’ve seen all these things and the first OWS-style shanty town in America is, in my judgement, a few years away. Then you’ll see and avalanche of copy cat.
Fail Burton, this is a really great post. It is a future no one really wants to contemplate. Let me add just one bit of hope without sounding too trite. In your statement of misreading “all men are created equal”, the context that is left out is God. Everything the Left does is to leave out God. Our faith in God is the one belief that has made our Constitution unique in today’s world. We are created equal by God. Man can not hope to replicate what God does, but can try to honor the the value of each individual, while at the same time recognizing the extreme diversity of life, and know that there is no way that he can possibly have domain over that which is God’s alone. Man’s justice is corruptible, which Political Correctness is a perfect example of. When we, as a society, look to government alone as the arbiter of justice, we fall victim to hubris. Man’s equality is not God’s equality. Life is far too diverse to be made into a preconceived flat continuum of equality. Our faith and belief in God or Providence, in that which is mystery, can be our saving grace.
Well, the context left out is indeed God, but in regard to the divine right of kings, which these new Americans categorically rejected, but not faith in God himself.
The liberal Left has replaced God with their own faith that everyone is in fact equal – all cultures, all civilizations, all people. There is one exception to this, and that is the snake in the Garden – the West. Liberals have ironically taken up the white man’s burden in the old sense, but also in a sense that the Third World will in turn uplift the West with their innate innocence and morality. Third World immigrants don’t wait for the arrival of a Messiah, but themselves, and the Left buys into it.
I have my own sense of equality. It goes like this. I google ‘civil war bridges,’ and then think of Bolivia, which I’ve visited 3 times. There, they have valleys across which they’ve propelled themselves on jury-rigged steel cable they can’t make themselves, like Spider-Man, dangling and risking death and for 20 years. These valleys are heavily forested. This is now, 2012.
I go back to the google image search about Civil War bridges and see match-stick after match-stick bridge – scores if not hundreds of them. They were built in days and from 1861-5. We built America out of a wilderness, just like the one those Bolivian’s cross.
I am sick to death of the Left and their PC telling me I’m a racist cuz I like and admire myself just like other cultures like and admire themselves. Nor do I apologize for being in first place. And, like any smart team, I should be allowed to fight to stay in first place. Instead, the Left, throughout Europe, Britain and America, says everyone is everyone and they will destroy the West through massive immigration of people who sit and stare out of cinderblock or corrugated tin shacks and do just enough to get by to prove it. This is the Third World, it is real. It is not something I have faith in but was driven into my head through more sad bus rides in the back of the world over 7 years than I can count or tell you about. They are really, really nice people – they are not great – I am.
I agree, military mom2. I’m reading a fascinating book by Vishal Mangalwadi called The Book That Made Your World. It necessarily skims the surface, but he talks a lot about how the Bible has affected life in his own country of birth, India, as well as all the other places where Judaism, Christianity, and western culture have spread.
The difference is NOT race. It is worldview. Other than that, Fail Burton makes great points.
What a great day. Dr. Hanson brought some thinkers to the party. Thanks to him and the previous 3 or 4 commenters.
VDH doesn’t call our current society fascist, and neither do I. If anyone has ever lived in a truly fascist society, they would think twice before trashing the Progressive movement with that moniker. We still have the first amendment and private sector activity. That we may be protofascist is a more convincing claim. One thing that Obama does is discard accurate descriptions of class position, about which I wrote here: http://clarespark.com/2010/09/11/is-wall-street-slaughtering-the-middle-class/.
But you won’t even have that next year if the Communist in Chief gets what he wants. Wake up, please.
“An embarrassed media remains silent about the new reactionary ethics.” What media have you been following, Victor? The Malignant Socialist Media is no more embarrassed about Obama’s Chicago Machine ethics than Pravda was about Stalin’s. They are silent because it is OK with them. Today’s “Schools of Journalism” are the Madrasas of Socialist Faith, and the true believers do not deviate or express doubt.
The bitter irony that, while all over Europe Nations which Progressed down the Road to Serfdom are floundering in economic chaos, here in the richest and most successful of any Republic in history, we have a lying, ineffectual Red-Diaper Chairman pitching the new proletariat on he wonderful world of his Communist daddy. And 40% of them are buying into it!
Instead of referring to the addled-brained as Leftists or Liberals, or Progressives, making them happy, we should adopt the term Regressives. Our politics today have become much more uncivil nd confrontational, particularly on the Regressive side, yet conservative writers and pundits and opinion-influencers of all stripes, insist on being polite and not using terms of opprobrium which might upset the gutter types. We need good pejoratives. I lament the loss of “Reds” and “Commies” and “Wobblies”. Regressive and Socialist are not exactly snappy but they carry an element of contempt that Left and Liberal and Progressive do not. And they make the Social Democrats go into tantrums of denial. Please try to be a little more insulting. They deserve expressions of contempt.
“Liberals claim to want to give a hearing to other views, but then are shocked and offended to discover that there ARE other views.”—William F. Buckley, Jr. (1925-2008)
Excellent. My take:
Progressives: That which you cannot debate, you denigrate; that which you cannot empathize, you dehumanize; that which you cannot create, you destroy (America); that which you cannot have, you steal; that which you cannot understand, you discredit; that which you cannot love, you hate; that which you cannot believe, you curse. Progressives are self-loathing, narcissists incapable of life-affirming living.
A sad show, but not inexplicable.
Happy days.
I clicked on your link. Forgive me, but what in the mighty name of Andrew Breitbart were you trying to say?
I think it’s one of those that, when you’re reading it, you’re supposed to say to yourself, “I’ve no idea what this is supposed to mean but I’m going to pretend I do and I’ll feel smarter when I’m done.
Indeed. You’ve heard of “Finnegans Wake” [There is no apostrophe showing possession in the title, FB]? Well JMH [whatever] was one of the mourners.
One of the manifestations of schizophrenic psychosis is called “word salad” where the afflicted individual strings together meaningless words and phrases. You need to get some help there Skippy before you blow a fuse.
No, it’s really much simpler. This is that Old Reactionary Stolen Teleprompter dba MegaDildo Jr. randomly looking for another master.
The circuitry is “feeling” doubt about “that job” promise as Mrs. President’s post election friend. And there are so many buses lined up at an undisclosed location in Chicago, that dba MegaDildo Jr. is sensing the handwriting on the pavement. Plus, It has sensed that a total decline in it’s nuclear core is possible as well by post election. Battery back up lasts only so long. Hence the randomization algorithm has been elevated in status to what humans would characterize as a fight or flight mode.
Blowing fuses, maybe, but that would require Some Government Agency approval, and reamed Prompter work.
Anyway, dba MegaDildo Jr., who the hell is dba MegaDildo Sr.?
No…. not Him!
Thank you, doc. For years, it’s struck me that the “regressives” were reactionaries of the Left.
Nice to have someone so astute validate my assessment.
Under that definition of progress, the “progressives” are the most regressive bunch to be observed anywhere outside of North Korea.
(Say, what’s their definition of “progress?”)
The entire world looks like North Korea, with themselves as the Kim clan.
cheers

Yes, America is changing by the hour. Unfortunatley, it seems to be going in the wrong direction. With the Left firmly entrenched in big government bureaucracy, education, media and entertainment, it does not appear to me that they are fighting an end game. What is to be done?
What is to be done ?
Nothing needs to be done because socialism stops working when the money runs out. The problem is what happens once the money runs out : does the “street” blame the rich, setting off major public strife, possibly leading to a police state (perhaps like Greece 12 months from now) ? Or does Society become reasonable and responsible by refusing to spend beyond its means ?
I forget who said it but : “Liberals,Aren’t”
I’ve taken to calling them TOOLs: Tedious Obnoxious Offensive Losers.
Always remember Alinsky’s rules of power tactics. Personally, I’ve adopted #5
5. “Ridicule is man’s most potent weapon. It is almost impossible to counteract ridicule. Also it infuriates the opposition, which then reacts to your advantage.”
Liberals, in an archaic sense of the word, have open minds but not empty heads. I prefer to refer to the current crop of “liberals”/”progressives” as Libruls. They do not have open minds and to the extent that their heads are not empty they are stuffed with platitudes.
How ’bout calling them Librulers. because that’s all they want – to rule everybody else. There’s a budding little totalitarian inside each one of them.
Yeah, I like that…LIBRULERS.
OK. I’ll drink to that.
Best keep it simple, there’s no need to be too clever, just clear and consistent:
regressives, sans scare quotes
“progressives”, with scare quotes
media bigot, sans scare quotes
“journalist”, with scare quotes
race baiter, sans scare quotes
”clergyman”, with scare quotes
socialist, sans scare quotes
”liberal”, with scare quotes
“And as the world leaves behind the progressive and as he turns regressive and bitter, give him some credit: he does not go down without the old fight against Rockefellers everywhere, … and all the other old enemies of the people.”
Ah yes, the constant reinactment of fighting old battles whence all the actual partipants are long dead and the self-congratulatory bromides regarding their own “bravery.” They’re a boring lot and won’t be missed when their gone.
Thank you for your writings Dr. Hanson. Despite the dark boding messages, it’s a source of comfort that the truth is recognised and honestly discussed.
Progressives will always provide you with Santayana’s saw about “those who forget the past are condemned to repeat it.”
More properly though, they fit the my modest corollary to it: “Those who dwell obsessively on the past are trapped within it.”
How about: “Those who can convince enough people to forget the past, can get the chance to screw them all over again”?
Left wing reactionaries—that’s what we’ve got now.
What an almost perfect undressing of them by Doctor Hanson.
At the grossest level, though, American—and western nation—people are on a path to becoming like the fat lady at the circus. Where’s Pogo when you need him—we have met the enemy, and he is US!
Obesity IS malnutrition, folks.
The plethora of (over)-processed foods that are eaten these days don’t provide the required nutrition. Period. Therefore, the body, being wise, demands more eating, which leads to obesity.
I’m just now finishing my yearly juice and broth fast, which this time lasted 14 days and removed 16 pounds of accumulated fat and toxins, as the body weight went from 141 to 125. Most people follow the “common law”, and never give their body such a break, which simply means that over time what’s within the epidermis quickly changes composition.
From a healthy full-of-energy youth, to a couch potato energy-lacking slob, in a few short years—that’s the new normal. We live AS a sick society. Literally.
“When hungry, eat.
When tired, sleep.
Above all, don’t waver” A Zen poem
Americans—always hungry! And, at the end of a typical day, having definitely eaten a lot, the poor growing-old body is certainly tired.
What is the in-your-face message, anyway, that can’t be avoided when in public, or for individuals themselves, when before a mirror?
Too much eating of bad stuff! I am what I am!
Besides the VDH examination of left wing reactionaries, I’d keep in mind an even deeper all encompassing human tendency—see no evil, speak no evil, hear no evil. It’s also been called vested interest.
Hey—I’ve lived X years and built my current “body” and “mind”, and it’s therefore got to be okay! Don’t mess with my exquisite expression of being human.
The human comedy—indeed.
Who, you should run for the Senate as a Democratican. You could then, with the backing of the Obamas and noted cowboy poet Harry Reid, become Chairperson of the Senate American Diet Committee and force us all into the 125-pound weight class. “Feather Weights for Fiefdom!”
No, Fred, all I wrote was just a free sharing of my personal experience and conclusions from a life of almost 70 years.
Far be it from me to play a food fascist!
I offer, you decide whether to ridicule or take seriously, what I give.
No doubt, one must be “ripe” enough to seriously get past CW stereotypes about health nuts like me. Anyway, know that there is a health “fringe”, maybe the true one-percenters, who are living a right diet lifestyle.
I noticed another 60-Minute joke of a scientific materialism segment broadcast last night, wherein it was claimed that it’s in the brain—addictions, that is, are all due to physical stuff. Well, come on!
How many people know about Pavlov’s dog? And, of those who do, how many are able tp realize that they are FOOD DOGS? That is, from birth on, the Standard American Diet or SAD programs them into the sick bastids they become—sooner or later.
It’s really simple. For each unique person, there exists a best diet, which if followed rigorously, would lead to maximum health. And, guess what?
Most people don’t even come close to following such a regimin, so of course they get fat and sick.
By the way, as you slip and slide among your fellow tubbies—no offense, if you’re lean, people—know that the average person has something like TEN POUNDS of fecal matter stuck on their colon. See all those sagging bellies—inside, there: CRAP!
i wonder if a side effect of the “yearly juice and broth fast” is gross hallucination
The INSIDE effect of fasting is health, you fool.
Starvation is the best sauce.
I don’t need no freakin Congress.
I don’t need no freakin Supreme Court.
I am OBAMA.
Actually, I AM…BARRY SOETERO…!
Kinda like movie stars who change their names to match what they want to portray on the big screen, with the help of agents (handlers) who “have his back,” hoping to ride the celebrity horse to the mountaintop.
Who “helped” Barack in the days he was plain and simply, “Barry?”
And why?
The Communist Party of America helped him, I says.
At the rate he’s going, one day soon he’ll appear in leotards, mask and cape, and announce to us, “I’m Batman.”
“Progressive” is nothing more than a coat used to cover one’s central political beliefs…”neo-marxist” if my thinking is accurate. This chosen perspective that is being used to grab “power” by these beta types is nothing new.
You can use as many words, produce many sentences, and talk around all you want, when your thoughts are rendered on this subject it seems to me we are at the same place looking at the same reality.
These are stupid, dangerous, and evil people.
Yes, Dr. Hanson, but the trouble is, your Regressives aren’t sniping back-seat drivers, they’re in the driver’s seat.
We have only six months to vote ‘em out. Got any suggestions?
Let them keep talking. Of course we have to retranslate into dictionary terms for the public.
“He [Obama] opposes any effort to clamp down on voting fraud. Even his compliant media worries that the president’s current jetting from one campaign stop to another in the key swing states is a poorly disguised way to politick on the federal government’s dime. Bundlers are, as was the ancient custom, given plum honorific posts abroad. Obama has held twice as many fundraisers as the much reviled George Bush had at a similar point in his administration.”
I think this is what is going to turn off most people to Obama in November. Not only was the nation lied to when it voted for him when it came to his many campaign promises, but all the country got with Obama was the same old-style boiler room Chicago politics from the 1920s and 1930s. There was nothing new in Obama and what the nation really got was a man who brought hypocrisy up to a new level, a level people are just now getting sick of. Maybe Obama’s own words are going to doom him in November. Let’s hope so. But it doesn’t hurt to keep reminding the voting public on what a bunch of lies the country was sold back in 2008.
As the philosopher Eric Voegelin once wrote about the trend-lines of the modern leftist “progressive” movement as purveyors of “the word” or ultimate moral “truth” (“The Vision of the Anointed” as Thomas Sowell puts it) in the best tradition of the Gnostics: “The end result of ‘progressive’ politics is totalitarianism.”
VDH, they are not “progressive”, they are not “liberal”, they are not “elite”, they are not “Democratic”…or even Democrats.
They are radical leftists, a permanent protest culture, stuck in a past that never existed to the extent they claim, staining the present with lies and warping the future with “solutions” to problems that do not exist.
They are marching inexorably toward totalitarianism, as they must, because unless they control the Inversion Narrative with the sniveling and compliant Propaganda and Lies ministry, unless they promote the Workers Party beyond their limited and out-dated utility, unless they advance the only wars they intend to prosecute (class, racial, gender, sexual orientation, …basically a stewpot of suspect class cooked up grievances), they cannot thrive.
This is not European social democracy gone wild. It is not even socialism. It is, as one of its sires proclaimed, Small C Communism.
Anita Dunn and Thomas Friedman and Carl Davidson genuflect to the Maoist version and swoon at the iron-fisted brutality of it.
The Che poster-hangers treat vicious “revolutionaries” as rock stars.
Fidel and Chavez are embraced in Hollywood by Sean Penn and Sheen the Elder.
Academia indoctrinates its charges in hard leftism, with all its toxic impurities, its anti-Americanism and its constant revulsion against the state of Israel.
It bows deeply to dictators and the serially deranged UN.
It seeks a One World governance by fiat and absolute power, absolutely.
This absolute power begins, sustains and ends with absolute control over facts, evidence and “truth” meted out to the masses in heavy doses of state controlled mendacity.
Secreting and covering up ACTUAL facts, evidence and “truth” on a daily basis, so that the Small C Communist “brand” is not only never tarnished, it is never exposed to sunlight. It is camouflaged, masked and hidden from view.
We tremble, hesitate and waver at the notion of calling it what it is, because they have cowered us with threats of slander, smearing and fierce sliming of anyone who dares to speak its name…with “McCarthyism” never far from their lips and “tinfoil hat”, “extremist”, …and their favorite “racist”…slander always at the ready. It’s effective…because we indeed keep calling them “progressive” or “liberal” or “elite”…instead of what they are.
Traitors engaged in treason.
The overthrow is underway. George Zimmerman is a sacrifice on the altar of of the Inversion Narrative. If the Martin case didn’t exist they would have had to invent it…in fact, they mostly did.
A Southern, gun-toting, racist with a murderous agenda hunted down and killed an innocent waif eating Skittles and drinking sweet tea. Except that’s not what happened. At all. He’s now a “white Hispanic”, whatever that is.
The Propaganda and Lies Ministry edited out the words of truth and fuzzied up the pictures of the gashes on his head. Hollywood can’t wait to put out another movie about Southern racists, except the “Help” that is needed in this country in 2012…is for any patriot strong enough of character to stand up and resist the Small C Communist overthrow.
Soros is for taking down capitalism, he is on record saying so. Van Jones is for taking down capitalism, he is on record saying so. The Maoists are for taking down capitalism, they are on record saying so. The Midwest Academy is for taking down capitalism, they are on record saying so. So was Frank Marshall Davis, Don Warden, the radical professors at Occidental and Columbia, Bill Ayers, Alice Palmer, Jeremiah Wright, Michael Pfleger, Saul Alinsky, Rashid Khalidi, Derek Bell, Barack Obama, Sr. ….how many more signs and signals do we need to awaken from our slumber?
EVERY person in Obama’s past who held a position of influence, who was a mentor, a father figure, a close and dear friend…hates the free market with a passion, was never “proud” of America, said it was a fraud, a scam, needed an apology for its very existence.
Let’s stop pussyfooting around here. This is not a debate where we need to score more points in ethereal subject matters. We are in a fight for our very existence. They are NOT liberal, they are NOT progressive, they are NOT elite, they are NOT tolerant, they are NOT innocent.
They are Small C Communists and they are the enemy of freedom.
jojo-
your comments and observations are spot on and brilliant. We need to stop pussy-footing around and identify these bastards as the Alinsky-communist traitors that they are and have been for decades in this country. The hour is late and these communists will never relinquish power peacefully. America needs to wake up and realize we are on a dangerous threshold.

Excellent thoughts, cfbleachers and VDH.
Our Weltanschauung War can perhaps be described as to who loves or hates the following two statements:
There is One God above us all (more or less described by Judaic/Christian Orthodoxy, which forces itself not on others)
There is One Universal Philosophy (as more or less described by Western Enlightenment, far above North, East & South)
Who hates, loathes, despises, fights against, and spends huge amounts of expensive resources to discredit the above two Truths of Love, the above summum bonum, mankind’s highest pursuit?
The Modern University. The Mainstream Inverted-Narrative Media. The oligarch political class. Devolutionary Hollywood. The Left. Democrats. School Boards subsumed by Idiocy. The Communists, Socialists, the Community Organizers. The Teachers Union. Divorce Courts. Gun-Grabbers. NYC. Boston. DC. L.A. San Francisco. The L.A. Times. The Race-Baiters. Public Education. Extreme Muslims. Euro-globalists. Almost all Elite, Powerful High-Money People. Almost all So-Called Experts. Unions. Government Employees. Federal Overlords. The EPA. etc.
Note that these sorry establishments require a huge amount of money for their Reality Distortion Machines. Why? Because over time, truth is a truth detection machine. And for 112 years, the enemies of One-God, One-Philosophy… keep encountering failure of their ideas and confirmation of the truth of One-God, One-Philosophy. So it takes more money for the propaganda to work against the ravages of time and history that keeps proving them wrong.
(As a side note, this explains whack-job broadcast Christianity, because whereas it might believe in One God, it has become the enemy of One Philosophy of Western Correcting Protocols: i.e. it believes its leaders angelic, just send $s!)
Most of this post comes from redacting the fine work of Dr. Larry P. Arnn (President of Hillsdale College) in Liberty and Learning.
Redacting Arnn, we might say that of Those-Who-Hate a) One-God-Above-Us-All AND b) One Western Philosophy-Above-All-Else-Tried… are going to be incapable of defending existence in a non-hubristic, sane and moral world, and will in fact, become champions for some surreal realities that cannot end well, because death and hate are promulgated.
Bishop Berkeley said famously: “And, whatever the world may say, he who hath not much meditated upon God, the human mind, and the summum bonum, [the highest end humans must pursue] may possibly make a thriving earthworm, but will most indubitably make a sorry patriot and a sorry statesman.
Our Founders put One-God, One-Philosophy this way: “laws of nature and of nature’s God”.
Our faith in One-God, One Philosophy is live and let live, don’t force ideas on others, simply defend these our two ideas against attackers who would replace them with lesser/death-creating ideas, and to find and support among us those who by virtue and talent honed are able to be statesmen for man’s best hope on Earth, Western Freedom, Western Liberty, Western Correction, Western understanding that men are not angels, nor are any leaders… so make allowances against all proud things unable to yet see that above us all are always One-God and One-Universal-Philosphy.
And finally, is not the sum of these two things Life and Love? (A fair trial for Zimmerman would be justice.)
And is not the result of lesser ideas Death and Hate? (A non-PC outcome of above trial would be what, riots & death?)
And therefore Hate, Hates Something, and that is that in the end, Hate will lose. And Hate Hates to lose.
Because Love conquers all, does it not? Like Ronald Reagan said, We win. They lose. Love wins.
Well said. “Ignorance is Strength,” drone the liberal fascists.
But in the end we shall all love Big Brother—but I never dreamed He would have big ears.
Ah, yes, our indignation at its best. But what are you/we willing to do to not only stop the left in this election but exorcise them from out nation. Unless you are willing to use “by any means necessary,” then….(cut into Col. Jessup’s soliloqy.)
You said,”EVERY person in Obama’s past who held a position of influence, who was a mentor, a father figure, a close and dear friend…hates the free market with a passion, was never “proud” of America,….”
And every person in his past would have failed in a Free Market. Perhaps that’s why it is attacked so vehemently. The Free Market doesn’t reward laziness, lack of imagination, or sloth in general. It will reward creativeness, effort, and a work ethic. This President’s day usually begins at 10:00 AM in a meeting with advisors and it doesn’t get much more complicated as the day wears on.
When he offically kicked-off his campaign the other day (spew alert) he said this election was about the survival of the middle class. I can’t help thinking he was lying. The centrally planned command economy run from Washington, D.C. as envisioned by this fraud would crush anyone under the weight of Utopianism as it’s layers of red-tape suffocate those trying eke out a living that could be classified as ‘middle’. Wielding the Commerce Clause as a club will see to that. Straight-jacketing a Supreme Court will cement it like shoes on any social climbers.
The pack of liars running the country are obviously bent, yet our Brokaws, Jennings, and Rathers today refuse to expose them as they haven’t in the past. I don’t expect things to change in the future. Exposing their lies is Job #1.
I think this election could be summed up simply as the Lazy vs the Non-Lazy. A mouth, a telepromter, rolled-up sleeves, and a lot of words have yet to convince me the President is capable of anything. I see lazy people. Not that there’s anything wrong with that, but they shouldn’t be in positions of leadership, ever. These last four years will go down as the most unproductive and wasteful in our history. Sadly, the Free Market will reflect this somehow because it simply doesn’t reward laziness. The cost of something is going up because we haven’t been productive. I just haven’t figured out what that ‘something’ is.
However cloistered the world view of the “Progressives” they have managed very well in achieving their goals. Only now when they are about to pass the finish
line do numbers of non-progressives understand just what are these goals.
Non-progressives are now challenged by events engineered by the “Progressives” to decide whether or not and how much they value the liberties from commands, dictates of self-selected, self- propagating “elite”. Dictates disguised as benevolence in the words equality, fairness and justice. “Elites/progressives” who, abrogated – STOLE – rights of Americans. Rights protected in the fundamnetal law of their nation. The Constitution as the base on which ALL law in America is justified. The documented protections Changed /dismantled repeatedly by representatives of the People, enjoined by their personal and freely taken oath to “uphold and defend” that document
Instead they have Interpreted and re-interpreted as expedient to their ends the protections and this law. Whils Americans dozed in their affluence, 24/7 entertainment and general immunity from external threat. So safe they neglected to notice the internal threat from these “Progressives” in the Congress, Judiciary and Executive offices of THEIR government. From local through state and federal. And of course in the entire “educational”/braomwash framework of the nation from nursery school through university graduate school.
Conspiracy is a boo-his word for progrssives to dismiss such interpretation of this long-term activity among many different people to achieve the same ends. What actually is a conspiracy?
The half century education by the “Progressives” geared to pit citizen against citizen in every possible way: sex/gender, race/ethnicity, age versus/youth,, non-Christian against Christian, military as bogus evil of the nation, police another of the fiends, anti-social acts deemed legitimate rebellion, mass gangs to menace citizens called peaceful assembly is a fixed tactic to get control of the neighbourhood.
And how it did work for their destruction of the American ethos amd identity.
Brother against brother. Defining American identity with hyphens, fracturing that identity. No more melting pot. Instead this Administration fans the flames for a racial civil war. For the moment cold. A proven tactic to destroy a community, a neighbourhood, a nation. Is this the usual way for “community organising”?
True Grit is now the need for American to see off the progrssive destroyers of their identity.
Then the elephant in the room, the Front Man Obama. Of whom we know nothing trustworthy. Some of whose documents under examination by disinterested acknowledged legal document proving experts are considered to be forgeries. Documents with official seals. This Obama whose mentors were convicted terrorists and America haters.
Americans now must chose how they want their country to proceed into the future. If they chose to remain in their protected cloisters and ignore or dismiss this incredible event in the highest office of honour in their gift, hoping it goes away or all works out for the best,or whether they choose to insist it be examined in its entirety shall be decisive for their future as Americans.
Progressives live in the past. I’ve said it often.
Another excellent essay by the good doctor. Nothing better illustrates the awfulness of the Obama administration than the fact that the ignorance of ‘low information’ voters is the only thing it has going for it right now. But keeping these people ignorant is becoming a daily challenge for the Old Media vanguard. They and their progressive elite buddies elsewhere must be in a constant state of anxiety over the fact that even Dear Leader’s most casual, off-the-top-of-his-head comments–not to mention those of his loyal minions throughout government–threaten their efforts at keeping people slap-happy ignorant of his gruesomely ongoing incompetence. But there’s nothing like a combination of easily digestible and highly toxic sound bites delivered on a regular basis by O et al to ruin a prog’s whole day.
vdh has offered a dangerously benign explanation for the vile and violent leftists.
They are marxists, a long tradition going back thousands of years, the sole purpose of which is for a handful of self-styled elites to utterly dominate and control the population; to steal the entire output of a serf class, and to live lives of total power and immorality.
It doesn’t have the slightest thing to do with returning to some halcyon liberal heyday, except perhaps in the most juvenile and naive minds in the thuggish coalition..

Spot on, Mr. Hansen. There’s nothing “progressive” about the progressives, other than the cancer they promote (see abortion, national debt). Funny how they have to tell us they’re “progressive,” — like saying they’re the “really, really smart people — really!” Because we certainly can’t tell by their words and deeds.
the era of the pre-reform Chicago machine??
Reform? Reform?
Excuse me, but I’m from Chicago. What on earth are you talking about?
You guys need a little historical perspective. Loony movements die real quick here, being destroyed by their leaders. I will spare you a list of failed preachers. Look at how fast the Klan died, Prohibition lost its power quickly too and for the same reasons. Could anyone find an America First member in January 1942? Eugenics hecklers in 1946?
The best thing is that they don’t see it coming sort of like the frog in the cook pot. Or you might look at the USSR. They didn’t have the resources or will to stop their downward spiral.
The Left will meet the same end, and whine to the very end.
“the left” is a movement that has lasted ten thousand years.
It is the modern day equivalent of the devine right of kings…unaccountable, total power over the lives of everybody else, with no basis in competance, wisdom or benevolnce. The only basis is might makes right.
It will never go way, and it can’t be debated.
It can only be defeated, and even then, it will morph into something they claim is new.
It won’t be new. There have always been and will always be people who demand complete power and are willing to do anything to get it.
Strongly concur with the idea that liberalism (post-1972 variant) has now become a regressive and corrosive replay of the politics of an America of half a century ago.
Courtesy of the radical-feminists (Catharine MacKinnon put it all out there in her 1989 book on the feminist theory of the state), Marx-Lenin was sucked into the demographically-desperate Democratic Party via Gramsci’s culture-war strategy for subverting established Western polities (they couldn’t be overthrown the way it was done in 1917 in the Russian ‘East’). Alinsky’s methods are the fruit of the same poisonous tree.
The pols may have presumed that Marxist-Leninist praxis and method could be ‘baptized’ into progressive-liberal politics without also piggy-backing the alien principles from a political universe so utterly hostile ot the Framing Vision. Surely the radicals felt that the Framing Vision and the American political universe were so tainted with ‘dominance, hegemony, and oppression’ (Gramscian terms) that they weren’t worth keeping anyway. And if most of the citizens ‘just don’t get it’ then why have a deliberative democratic process in the first place?
This approach has lethally infected the Beltway in all the Branches now and the bureaucracy as well.
And it is bipartisan, since this new Leviatha merely joins the ancient Leviathan caged by the Framers in 1787. A centralized government that ostensibly can work so much ‘good’ can easily turn to the dark side and work so much that would be alien and repugnant to the Framing Vision and its first principles.
The past half century – for whatever good has been accomplished – has seen the playing-out of very toxic (perhaps lethal) consquences that existed in the ‘baptizing-adoption’ gambit from the get-go. We have to realize this and deal with it, and make whatever repairs can still be effected.
Dr. Hanson:
OK, we get it. It’s like the Old Left and the New Left are desperate to fulfill each and every pipe dream they’ve had since their inception. I want to ask a question, however, and that’s this: Supposing that we conservative types WIN the 2012 election, we get a Republican president in the White House, we win the Senate and keep the House, and we get some gains in the state houses. Then what? It seems to me that all of these indicators of problems you cite are coming from institutions that the government has no direct control over. I mean, the Executive branch doesn’t “control” the media (they are in alliance, yes, but it’s not control. I don’t think anyway). Likewise they don’t control the faculties of the Ivy League, the Unions, the management of the major entertainment and media companies, and the vast numbers of NGOs that are all pushing the “progressive fascist” (or what I like to call “Unionist”) agenda.
If the situation facing the nation is really that dire, if all of these other institutions, many of which are not part of government per se, are detrimental to our way of life, then what is it that we really need to be doing here? Are elections enough? Clearly they are not, otherwise the Republicans had in 2004 exactly the same setup that we seek now.
Our focus should not be entirely on who sits in the White House, what we need is a liberation of society at large. That can’t happen, however, if we’re too tightly obsessed with just the political system. What I want to hear from conservatives and others is not just a diagnosis but a resolution. We know the reasons WHY things have to change, but we haven’t heard the HOW to really do it yet. We need that more, I think.
The problem is that the totalitarian virus has infected all the aforementioned institutions and rendered them deathly sick of mind, body and spirit, and though one may not be in control over the other [yet], they each autonomously (often times unconsciously) work toward the same collective end – which is to say; they strive to achieve the utter subjugation of the ‘masses’ under the wise direction of a benevolent aristocratic elite concomitant with the subversion of all productive output to serve the ends of said elite’s will to power – often in open coordinated alliance with each other. National socialists of yore used to call it “Gleichschaltung”.
At this point, the infernal machinery is on full autopilot with several generations of Americans educated in the maintenance thereof. As such, it hardly matters who the president is, or whatever lofty principle he is said to represent. What was meant to be, will be…Unless it is opposed. The Collective will triumph unless men stand ready to sacrifice their very bones to be ground to abrasive powder with which to grind away the gears of the Marxian sociopolitical machine from within. The forces of Liberty need embark on their own long march through the institutions or suffer the fall into the depths of endarkenment.
We the people are each and every one at war whether we know it or not. Every individual inconsequential act of defiant free will is a poison in the gut of insatiable Leviathan. Resist enslavement or be enslaved.
You make a good point SP and one that I’ve made before. The Leftists are so deeply burrowed into every aspect of our lives, not only government but culture as well, from academia to news media to entertainment, that one election, or even a series of elections with Republican victories as far as the eye can see, will not solve the rot that is at the very core of our foundations as a free and independent people. They’ve been infiltrating for generations and they will not be rooted out with a few elections.
Rooting them out has to start with funding, or more accurately, the cutting of funding. First start by embracing federalism and eliminating all the redundant departments that stack layer upon layer of beauracracy into everything we do. Accept and enforce the principle that, but for a very short list of duties – Defense and Intelligence being at the top of the list, most all governmental tasks should be decentralized and performed at the level closest to the people. I’m talking education, housing, even welfare – for the truly helpless. Policing as well. Just how many layers of federal, state, county and municipal police agencies do we really need? And how much do all these layers cost? And how many statist burroweing rats does it support?
Start a populist assault on the pampered and tenured professariat who, with the exception of the hard sciences, seem to do little but infect and poison the minds of future generations of Americans – turning them into America haters. Why in the world should there be a single cent spent or subsidized by the taxpayers to support these ungrateful wormtongues. Let them sell their poison on the open market, vying for jobs along with the rest of us rubes, rather than living in their pretend fiefdom’s sucking at the government teat, all the while undermining and spitting on the benevolence of the people who pay their salaries.
The media is a different task, as control of speech should be viewed with great caution (although the left spits at the idea with their ingrained worship of political correctness). I don’t know how you get the propagandists out of the information reporting business. Maybe a licensing process for bona fide, so-called news organizations. Hell, you have to jump through interminable hoops to get licensed to run a hot dog stand. Why not some thought out and agreed upon standards imposed on those tasked with presenting us the information we as citizens need to make informed judgments about the course our country will take. As expensive as television advertising is, making up the bulk of the obscene amounts that political campaigns cost, how much more valuable when 90% of it is in the tank for one Party. And actively trying to destroy the other. I don’t call that free speech. I call that making unreported campaign contributions. If we can figure out how to send men to the moon, is it too much to ask that we impose some reasonable standards on what constitutes fair presentation of information to the public.
Just a few of my humble thoughts.
And taxing the uber wealthy. For Pete’s sake why do we not see this as a way of cutting the legs out from under the progs/regs.
Create a billionaires wealth tax. Tax union dues. Create a millionaires tax for anyone making a million who does not own a business. Tax entertainment-Hollyweird, NFL/NBA, etc. Remove the tax credit for foundation who give money for political purposes; tax all 527s.
Use the very tool they wish to use against us aganist them. And if you have to sugar coat it, say the money will be used for health care for the uninsured.
What I would find to be the height of irony and poetic justice would be for us non-brainwashed, unsuffistikated roobs to start occupying college campuses and burning them down – at least the humanities and liberal arts portions of them. And driving those tenured communists out. Kind of as payback for their acts back in the ’60′s.
Yeah. I’d like that.
I’m in
Excellent column but you are skating on thin ice with National Review to make such observations, no matter how true. At least you have another outlet Rich Lowry Derbyshires you.
Dear Mr. Hanson,
Your a pretty smart fellow. You write very well and I have for one gained much insight into the tyranny being imposed on my country and myself and fellow American’s.
In light of what you have posted here, I would like to respectfully request you write about what we as a sovereign people can do to go on towards Liberty instead of the fascism that is rapidly encroaching upon us.
I’m confident you have some fine ideas on how to redress the statist agenda that would be well received by many.
Please allow me to state the time for pointing out what is become obvious in the general sense is nearing the end of its usefulness. It is well past time for a narrative of recourse and redress in peaceful lawful manner to be published in the mainstream blog/new media.
Many would follow your example. It takes courage and conviction to do so, your lead would set the standard for many to take up flag of recourse to Liberty.
There is not much time remaining to do so, for the ruling elites are making peaceful redress increasingly impossible. Once that Rubicon of petition and peaceful redress is crossed, the ruling elites will have made violent redress possible.
A road full of terrible suffering and mayhem for sure. Yet a road that must and will be taken if peaceful redress is not capable of saving this here constitutional republic and preserving Liberty.
Kind regards,
Mt Top Patriot
God bless you and America too.
Hah! That’s easy – end all immigration. They are the fuel the Left is using to burn down the West.
That is a sacred cow that would be more difficult to slay than the beloved Medicare & Social Security.
I agree, the most obvious and effective solution is therefore the one that will never happen. We are no longer pragmatists interested in survival or aware the world’s nations compete. We are our great-grandfather’s children, with no ability to sense, or react to, threat.
Regressives! Absolutely perfect. I think we should do all we can to make the title stick.
I truly can’t imagine allowing the republicans to bring America down again, like they did during Bush/Cheney…. Resulting in this Depression they call a Recession!
Are the repubs supporters that clueless..? How can you possibly think that taking away our rights is caled “smaller” government (it takes more people to regulate that) DUH…
Or that “for-profitizing” our prisons and everything else the government has run for years could possibly be a good thing – it’s a very BAD thing… – don’t you realize how much the price will go UP for everything when they all need to make a PROFIT… note: the government doesn’t try to rip you off and make profits!…. Don’t you have any common sense? Seems not -
My God you are annoyingly clueless. The waste and fraud brought on by removing the need to make a profit against competition (as is the case in all government run organizations) far exceeds the profits enjoyed by any corporation. Look at the cost/productivity ratio of anything run by a unionized public employees. It’s absolutely frightening and a total rip off to the citizens of this country. Even the ones who don’t pay taxes should be against this.
The simplicity of thought boggles the imagination. I live amongst mostly liberals and this is about the extent of their capacity to argue. They have no knowledge of the world, how it works, its history, economics or its failed ideologies. Their vision of the world can be encapsulated on a windshield wiper-pegged flyer. No recognition of complexities or unintended consequences. Its human development retarded in preadolescence, still repeating mother’s dictums in hope of just being able to remember them.
“note: the government doesn’t try to rip you off and make profits”
Like Solyndra? Evergreen Solar?
Like Warren Buffet making money off of Obama’s decision to disallow a pipeline from our closest ally?
Like three public employees/grant recipients at NMFS for every groundfish permit in the Atlantic Basin?
Like underfunded pension funds for public union employees that were purposely never fully funded by the unions and that the unions are demanding be brought up to “snuff” entirely by taxpayers?
The cost of government IS a rip off of the taxpayers, and a profit for government employees, grant recipients, and donors who have the ear of the inner party.
Do you even know of these things? Have you heard of them? Your information stream has been edited to make sure you never did.
You see, Kel, if one listens to NPR, and reads the NYT, and posts on Kos they will never be introduced to anything in their information stream critical of the left, its heroes, and its policies. Ever. Whole web pages have been dedicated to lists of news stories that NPR will NOT cover. They only do “hard hitting” coverage of the center and right. Never the left.
Oh, and NPR does this filtering with…our tax money. Another ripoff.
Well over 95% of government employees aren’t there to do anything good or useful except by accident. The ONLY reason they are in government employment is because they know it is a guaranteed paycheck with a guaranteed pension regardless of one’s skills, intellect, etc. That is an inherent and forever ripoff of the taxpayer, because when these types get their perfect job security they work less hard (human nature). Always.
The social contract between the private and public sectors was violated by the public. Our Founding Fathers knew from their experiences with the monarchy in England that a certain type of person would always seek these sinecures. Knowing that this type of person had to be kept on a very short leash or they would badly damage society, they set up a type of government that would be, first and foremost, LIMITED. Because limiting these sorts is essentially for a decent society to exist. In the beginning, in exchange for the perfect job security these pathetic creatures crave above all other things, they agreed to take a VASTLY smaller pay grade and a VERY modest pension. Since WWII, though, they have decided that they want the unassailable job security AND to make as much or more than the private sector. They broke the contract – they take and give up nothing in return – so they are at fault and any remedy must come out of their hide. Their options are:
-Go back to the contract as it was created and take the massive pay cuts they deserve, or
-Keep your overpay but now you can easily and quickly be fired for cause and lose your pension.
The current situation is unsustainable.
And a ripoff.
Beautifully said no mo.
Kelli, You must be a recent college grad? Which institution of higher learning printed your degree?
– prior to typing out the cheat sheet the Left distributed.
Really?
by using terms like ‘liberal’ ‘progressive’ ‘reform’ the left has cleverly mass marketed the idea that they favor taking power structure A and improving, humanizing it so that it is an improved power structure A.
But of course their real interest is creating and transferring power to people in system B.
Now objectively system B is just as unfair and suboptimal as system A is…but the New Class members get the perks…bling…etc.
they have made great strides in doing this.
These are the “regressive’s”.
AhhhhKelly, me boyo—-or is it me lass—-anyway, you would do well to go back to capitalism/free enterprize, and such to find out that the profit motive is what creates efficiency and brings prices down. The Socialist way always produces the opposite result—-and then dies, taking millions of people along with it into servitude, debt, poordom and worse.
Do you really NOT know this? Note; the government always rips you off and creates losses. Figured you knew that. How can you NOT know about the tremendous cost overruns on anything government? Look at Debtclock.org, for heavens sake. Are you blind? Right now, do you really figure that the progressivist democrats are NOT bringing America down? Eh? Well, do you? Think, think, think………
And what on earth does one or the other political party have to do with anything? Back to the drawing boards with you, kiddo. Get an education and maybe you will cease making imbecilic and self-embarrassing comments on public sites.
The media definitely doesn’t do their jobs. How else to explain so many people who think Paul Ryan’s budget is “fiscally conservative” despite it adding trillions to the debt and not balancing the budget until the year 2040?
2. Stay on topic.
I see “Progressive” thinking in almost all Politicians. Republican and Democrat. they all believe in “Government” . Majority have never had a real job in the economy and have been in running for election all of their life.
Scott Brown from Boston is a Liberal. Not a Consertative, same goes for
Collins and Snowe from Maine. Newt Gingerich is a Statest. Dick Luger and
John McCain think America should get involved in every action through out the
World. Nation Building is good politics and Big Business. If it is a idea from Washington DC, be very careful. All in all, Politicians know how to spend money
on worthless projects, that never end. Republican or Democrat.
The Political Class Extort money fromm every business wanting some deal from Washington and the News Media protects both sides.
Drunken Sailors spend their own money, The Sheriff of Nottingham was the Government, Robin Hood and his followers were the voters of today.
Don’t expect any change from this bunch in Washington, unless we force them to change.
I remember which side Democrats were on in the race wars of the 1950s and 1960s: They were against integration, which is why M.L. King was a registered Republican.
Its nice to have Dr. Hanson to Xray the body politic so well for us. Don’t stop now Doc we a few more symptoms.
In the “progressive” mind, America is some sort of undemocratic fascist imperialist one-percentist corporatocracy run by Bush, Cheney, Halliburton, the Koch brothers, and their lapdog Obama, who promises to bite the bad guys as soon as he gets re-elected. This gives me an idea. After the current social-democratic utopia collapses in a blizzard of worthless currency and unpayable debt, perhaps we should give that other system a try. Turn the states into for-profit corporations, where votes are counted in proportion to taxes paid. Let the bravest entrepreneurs start their own states by seizing undeveloped countries and, well, developing them. If you’re going to be called a rapist no matter what you do, you might as well get busy raping.
Jim your makin’ me mad.
What you are saying is that even though progtards their very own selves say they aren’t liberals, you still have to tarnish liberalism with windmill marxism. And then you get to say, see look, liberalism is not about open mindedness, generosity, justice its progtardism just like the progtards say it (isnt). Because they always lie or something.
I’m pissed.
Its exactly like progtards saying conservatism isn’t really about fidelity to country, fidelity to justice, and not eating your seed corn. And then they point to west boro church and other lunatics who themselves say they arent conservatives and say look its just like a conservative to want to burn fags and lie about not being a conservative.
Mr Hanson. Why is it that to be conservative one must conserve the oil-swilling engine. Why isnt conservative someone who wants to conserve the land, by using the best on ingnuity and market force to invesnt a better solution to the internal combustion engine. i drive an electric car. its wonderful. Its quiet. it shoots up the incline. I dont handle stinky pipes any more, i plug it in. when the traffic stands, or waiting for the lights to change, the car is utterly quiet since the engine does not need to run. The price is competitive, and is likely to become more competitive as battery tech matures. All without government subsidies. Sticking with oil means subjugation of the world, and world policy to the Persian Gulf. Please think about it
How much did you electric car cost you and where do you plug it in? How many miles can you drive before it needs recharging? What is your annaul income per chance? Those investments you pine about would yield better results if the market forces (thats a conservative issue) and not government (eg. Solyndra failure costing taxpayers $500 billion– where did the money go– maybe you should look) were unfettered.
Please think about it. It’s not all about you.
Were it all that, I’d have one. Or if I had yet to hear of all these virtues, you can bet that plenty – PLENTY – of private investors would have heard of it and been in on the action already. There would be absolutely no need of government intervention, and you would have no need whatsoever to plead your case. The market would make it happen.
Electric cars may be the future, but not the present. The markets will decide when and if, not the government.
when it comes to our going to work, or visiting, or running errands, in our cars and trucks.
But electricity won’t run military ships, planes and such, not for a long long time. That takes oil, a lot of it.
And without more oil than our enemies have (and we have plenty of enemies) we’re kaput.
Nuclear vessels don’t use much fuel oil.
Electic cars have been losing to the internal combustion engine for over a hundred years now.
When they invent a battery that weighs about 5 pounds, is totally disposable, gives 20 to 30 miles to a charge, takes 5 minutes to take on 15 of them, and has 100,000 ready-to-go recharge stations never more than a few miles away….then electric cars will be competitive.
Until then, they are only for nuts and people who want to throw money away to make inane points.
yuval: There were gov’t subsidies of $7500 for purchases of electric cars. There was talk of raising them to as much as $10,000. (By progressives, I guess). There is no free lunch: 50% or more of electricity in this country is generated by coal burning plants, so even electric cars cannot shed the reliance on fossil fuels.
We could have less reliance on the Persian Gulf countries by switching some vehicles to natural gas. We have a lot of it, it turns out. The largest fleet belongs to the federal government. Why hasn’t this administration decreed that they will begin such a switchover? Fleet vehicles seem to be a natural for this type of propulsion, moreso than electric, given their cost.
Whenever anyone talks about subsidies..(….choose any from the long list…) it should be remembered always just where all of the cash for those subsidies originates.
Remember Margaret Thatcher’s reminder of what happens when other peoples’ cash runs out…..printing more cash only increases that downward spiral.
[to see this beautifully performed in microcosm, hasten thee all to your nearest video rental store and take out "Margin Call"....it should be required viewing.]
There are no fireballs and explosions, no flying figures in tights, just old fashioned tightly edited acting on a very tense theme.
Not off-topic here at all.
You should be writing speeches for Rommney. If you won’t run for office, at least lend a hand.
to kick Obama out of office begs the question, what does it take, and what will it, take to do it?
Brains, of course, but what else?
Guts. It’ll be ugly.
Will, or we’re lost before we start.
Understanding. We are fighting for our lives.
And that’s not all we need it’s only just to get started.
Strike first, and stay on attack.
From Instapundit…(Glenn Reynolds’ site)
‘… [a passage from] Jonah Goldberg’s new book is fitting:
‘Ronald Reagan . . . was confronted by a bunch of screaming hippies back in his days as governor of California. They swarmed his car yelling at him for cutting education funding or some such. One fellow — who I like to imagine looked like Shaggy from Scooby Doo — held up a sign to Reagan’s car window saying “We are the future!”
Reagan quickly grabbed a pen from his suit pocket and wrote something down on piece of paper and thrust it to his side of the window so the kid could read it. It said: “I’m selling my bonds!”’
What will it take?
Cutting Humor from an Irrepressibly Likable Poet/Prophet/Politician who Fights our Founders Fight… that’s what.
Schwarzenegger had it when he said Arianna Hugginton’s tax loopholes were big enough to drive his Hummer through.
When an inflammatory press wanted to make a huge issue out of a conservative politician who told Schwarzenegger’s reporter/wife to shut up. Was Schwarzenegger going to demand the man’s apology? No. He told the press he’d been trying to get his wife to do that for years.
Schwarzenegger said, “Money doesn’t make you happy. I now have $50 million but I was just as happy when I had $48 million.”
Please, don’t get hung up on the persona. Sure, Schwarzenegger has had his problems. But he demonstrates what it actually will take to take down the liberal machine: Cutting Humor from an Irrepressibly Likable Poet/Prophet/Politician.
When Douglas said his opponent, Lincoln, was two faced… The Great Emancipator replied to the audience, “If I were two-faced, would I be wearing this one?”
Self-depreciating humor can be sign of intelligence, acute self-awareneness and charming confidence. We brainiac VDH lovers can appreciate such an one. But then again, so can the plumber and bus driver. Anyone can.
Granted, Schwarzenegger went, well, limp. Right up until that time, he won the confidence of the majority of Californians!
A lot of our current crop of champion-dreadnoughts take themselves too seriously. They are warriors, but not self-depreciatingly humorous warriors. They are action heroes, but not believable action-movie type heroes.
Our cause should be likable, but the masses have not found it likable enough.
Schwarzenegger said, “The best activities for your health are pumping and humping.”
We can’t help but like such an one, down-to-earth yet high-powered yet as real as the day is long. Funny to boot!
Send us a Deliverer. We need a Moses with a sense of humor, some… Irrepressibly Likable Poet/Prophet/Politician who Fights our Founders’ Fight.
This might explain how the Latinos afforded those up-to-date vehicles which were driven up to your property as you described in “Vandalized Valley”:
