The Liberal Super Nova
Two parties, left and right, are central to good consensual government — one the perennial check on the other, both within the general boundaries of constitutional free-market capitalism.
Yet the hard-Left takeover of the Democratic Party has meant that there is no longer a credible balance in our system, as almost all the tenets of contemporary left-wing ideology are blowing up, imploding super nova style — unsustainable ideas that are contrary to human nature and demand coercion for their implementation, given that they are increasingly anti-democratic and have to be implemented from high by an elite technocracy whether in Brussels, Sacramento, or Washington.
Far too much is always seen as not enough: Greeks are angry that there was too much “austerity” and not enough of the old borrow and spend; Obama is blamed for only borrowing $5 trillion for too “little” stimulus; Democrats threaten to withhold from the community-organizer Obama because he was not hard enough on “fat cats” and the capitalist state; in California, a 10.3% income tax is too low, not too high. When the remedy is seen worse than the disease, then the patient is indeed terminal.
Let me do a brief survey of the fissuring liberal world in which we live:
Economics
All of Europe to some degree is democratic socialist, but some states–the PIGS, for example — are more so than others. So the current meltdown is a morality tale of those nations and regions that sought to stay fiscally responsible — say, Germany, Scandinavia, the Netherlands — and those that did not: France to some degree, and, of course, Greece, Ireland, Italy, Portugal, and Spain. Cite geography, Catholicism versus Protestantism, weather, geography, history — any cultural barometer you like — but the truth is that one workable paradigm reflects human nature, of spending only what you make, and the other does not.
The latter insolvent states now call for “growth” instead of “austerity,” but what intellectually dishonest euphemisms! The choice is really between “borrowing to spend” and “fiscal discipline.” Frame it like that, and would Obama be demanding that Greece and Spain “borrow” more and not be fiscally disciplined? (OK, yes, he still would.)
The liberal model — borrowing huge sums, rigging interest and the currency to enable state profligacy, turning large swaths of the population into less productive unionized government workers or dependents on the dole who vote in thanks to political hacks — simply does not work. How could beautiful blue-state California lose almost a millions refugees to arid Texas? I like Texas, but Dallas had far less of nature to work with than did San Francisco. (It takes a lot of human failure for thousands to give up verdant California to move to Utah or the Nevada desert.) What we are witnessing is nothing short of surreal: in the manner that Tijuana was a different universe from San Diego, so too the entire state of California is becoming a different world from its neighbors. Whether one examines its near dead-last schools, its oppressive income and sales taxes, its decaying roads and infrastructure, its absurd prison system, its dysfunctional state offices (try the DMV), or its priestly public employee caste, California is becoming Detroit.
Do any believe pre-Walker Wisconsin was more viable than it is now? Did union memberships of public workers soar after Wisconsin state employees were given the chance to join or not join the union, or did they dip precipitously among the very class who protested the reforms? (So is it to scream publicly against Walker and then quietly go home to quit the union and get your dues back?)
From Greece to Italy to California to Wisconsin to Obama’s Washington, the verdict is in: the democratic statist model of trying to provide cradle-to-grave benefits, administered by an elite technocratic class, using demonization to bully the opposition and redistribute income, not only does not work, but cannot ever work. Note that President Obama — $5 trillion in new debt, “stimulus,” millions added to food stamps, unemployment benefits vastly expanded, near-zero interest rates, enormous subsidies for wind and solar — never concedes his blue-state neo-socialism is not working (even though it is almost impossible to stymie the U.S. economy).
Instead, the tsunami did it. No, it was the Republican Congress that after 2011 stopped all the good things he did between 2009-2010. No, it was automation like ATM machines. No, of course, George W. Bush damaged Obama’s economy in the manner that Reagan could not do anything because of Carter’s legacy. No, it was the EU and its failure to spend and “grow” more. No, the private sector is “fine”; the problem is cutting back like Walker is doing in Wisconsin.
Green
Everyone understood that industrializing economies were hard on the environment and at some point ecology and conservation would have to restrain the idea of unchecked development. Without a green force, we get 1970s Lake Erie. But the present liberal green orthodoxy has become an absurd paradox.
Why? Because it cannot resolve two mutually contradictory impulses: the romance of a pristine pre-industrial paradise and the reality of all the appurtenances that go with the present affluence. Even environment-correctness is not exempt. Want a solar farm in the desert? Not if you disrupt a turtle migration path. Aren’t windmill farms the answer? Not if you shred red-tailed hawks on occasion. Don’t you want to put nuclear waste in a safe place rather than above ground? Not if you wish to endanger salt formations hundreds of feet below. Radical environmentalism is nihilistic: it cannot progress or regress, a victim of its own contradictions of wanting nice things to spontaneously generate ex nihilo.
No one believes that Al Gore lives his life according to nature, or that Bay Area communities do not flush their treated wasted into San Francisco Bay, or that professors and actors pass up granite counters, hardwood floors, and cell phones. Take three or four emblematic careers of well-known liberals — a George Clooney, Michelle Obama, Oprah Winfrey, or John Kerry. In the environmental sense, does any doubt that they are both green and indulgent? In the economic sense, both populist and, in terms of their own lexicon, overpaid? In the social sense, both egalitarians and one-percenters?
Look at greens in Germany: all the nation’s nuclear plants are to be shut down. Its sizable coal reserves are too hard on the environment. There is little domestic natural gas or oil. Solar is a joke under cloudy skies. Huge windmills look like frozen dinosaurs on the landscape stuck in tar. Where then comes the power to make matchless BMWs, where the electricity to run sleek “mass transit”? I suggest that soon, if the mentality does not change, Germany will buy electricity from France, or import natural gas to power its dynamos, or quietly rely more on coal. Again the essential truth: free-market Western democratic capitalism is sustainable, both environmentally and economically, and alone gives us the affluence and freedom to allow a sizable minority to divorce itself from the gritty daily tasks of production to critique and revile the very system that nourishes them.
As long as we realize that parlor paradox, we are fine. But once we allow the poseurs to run things, we are back to Icarus of myth. In other words, it is only annoying that a Senator Obama on the back bench from time to time is grandstanding and demagoguing Guantanamo, calling for “millions of green jobs” in subsidized solar and wind industries, or insisting on “cap and trade”; but no one in his right mind would ever vote such a megaphone into power, no more than young Phaethon would be given Helios’s chariot or Narcissus would be pried from his reflecting pool.
Race and Culture
The current multicultural paradigm in the West simply does not work, again due to its innate contradictions of wanting what is supposedly wrong. Ostensibly because of past imperialism, colonialism, racism, and privilege, dominant so-called white (if any can define it) culture in the West must not only apologize for Western influence, but assume it exists only through ongoing exploitation of the “other.” And, second, due to endemic bias, so-called minorities must be given exemption from social norms — different requirements for hiring and admission, politically correct no-go zones in discussions of crime and pathologies, and a general culture of self-censorship about why, say, a Detroit looks like Hiroshima did near 70 years ago, or why millions flock to a Cologne, Los Angeles, or London, but no one is dying to reach Cairo, Algiers, Oaxaca, Lagos, or San Salvador. Race is not the reason, but culture most certainly is.
Consider just two news items that reflect the modern liberal implosion: the Trayvon Martin case and the Elizabeth Warren fraud. Both tell us a lot about liberal notions of race. In the former, the media did all that it could to construct a racial fantasy: on the one hand, Martin was to be a preteen model student, eating Skittles, when gratuitously assassinated; Zimmerman, on the other hand, was a white gun-toting German vigilante out to racially profile blacks and shoot them “like a dog.” The goal was to prove again that America is a dangerous place for young black men, given the ubiquity of roving white shooters, and, in a larger sense, to remind us of the ongoing need for the entire liberal idea of guilt and reparations.
Absent, as it had to be absent, was the truth: Martin was a suspended, not a model, student. He bragged in social network pages of both drug use and violence, and was kicked out of school for possessing “a burglar” tool from school. He likely beat Zimmerman to a pulp and did not cry for help, but rather was on top of one who far more likely did. Zimmerman suffered head wounds and a broken nose. He was Hispanic (had he spiced up his name to Jorge Zimmerman, he would probably not be in jail). He was not a racist vigilante, but a nervous neighborhood watch monitor who assumed that black youths had recently burglarized his middle-class community. He found himself in a fistfight with a 17-year-old, fit youth who was pounding his head to the pavement. And then he shot the attacker who was not armed.
Whether that act was reckless endangerment, self-defense, involuntary manslaughter, or second-degree murder, a jury — not the commentary of Al Sharpton or Barack Obama — will decide. What we do know, however, is that almost nothing that the media and the Congressional Black Caucus told us about the case proved true. The notion of a white male berserker on the hunt for preteen candy-eating blacks lost in the rain was critical to the racial narrative. And in a larger sense, there could be no collective worry about frightening statistics of black-on-black crime, vastly disproportionate black-on-white crime incidence, and soaring illegitimacy, incarceration, and single parenthood. The pathologies of the underclass minority community, then, are critical arguments for compensation and reparation for an elite careerist class such as the Congressional Black Caucus — all of which brings us to the Warren embarrassment.
You see, in our sick world the two incidents are somewhat connected. Because of the pathologies of the inner cities and disparate rates of success for some minorities, a pink Elizabeth Warren can con victimhood. There are impediments, of course, to inventing a victimized identity: intermarriage and immigration have made irrelevant the neat distinctions of black/brown/white. The soaring success of Punjabis, Chinese, Japanese, and Southeast Asians has rendered the old liberal dogma — non-white=a bleak future of racist oppression without massive government intervention — obsolete. There is a rising awareness that Great Society remediation worsened, not ameliorated, the struggle of the underclass. Millions of so-called white youth who grew up under affirmative action are unlikely white oppressors, who daily stifle the aspirations of minorities, or who perpetuate 19th-century oppressions, or who have helped created a Western system that no one seeks to join or wish to benefits from.
Yet Warren — pink and blond — managed to con Harvard University and the law profession in general. What was brilliant about her scam was its utter cynicism about modern liberalism.
“Race” for Warren is a Foucauldian construct. It did not even matter that she lied about the meaningless 1/32 drop from a mythical great, great, great grandparent. It did not matter that she did not even attempt the Ward Churchill-like effort of dressing up in buckskin and playing Indian. Instead, she knew the university and so she knew it was essentially a racial fantasyland where upper middle class elites can fabricate oppressed backgrounds, often through mere assertion, hyphenation, and accentuation, to take a guilt-ridden class to the cleaners, in the unspoken bargain that in return the latter can continue to enjoy their rather insular lives apart from the world of Trayvon Martin.
The result was that Warren was a minority with all its accruing perks because she said she was and to question that would be racist, reactionary, you name it. When pressed, family lore and high cheekbones were cited. But no matter, in postmodern thinking there are no facts, just competing discourses. And hers was just as valid as the old white male doctrinaire reductionist creed of asking for proof of ethnic heritage.
Warren, you see, was the twin of Trayvon Martin. Because we as a society, despite a trillion dollars spent, have a poor track record of keeping Trayvon Martin, and fifty-percent of the urban minority class, in school, away from drugs, and prepped for an equal shot at the good life, we compensate by allowing an overdog like Elizabeth Warren to be a safe surrogate Trayvon Martin — especially because she is white, blond, fuzzy, non-threatening. And so, presto, the Harvard faculty has a pet “Native American” to feel good about. The dimensions of that fact of race and affirmative action were well known to Barack Obama throughout his career, and are not hard to fathom in his own memoir.
We could go on forever with illegal immigration, the therapeutic university, or the media, but the message is universally the same: we are coming to the theoretical limits of liberal orthodoxy. Detroit is liberalism’s Nagasaki; California its Greece — and the hated Scott Walker its Angela Merkel.
All the old shiny chrome is rusted and crumpled: Harvard? Knee-deep in the Elizabeth Warren scam. The Nobel Peace Prize? Neither Al Gore nor Barack Obama had a record of bringing peace to anyone. The postmodern EU and its vaunted euro? The mystery is how even technocrats could design such a suicidal currency. The paper of record? The New York Times has become a sort of shopper’s insert, its op-eds and news accounts synopses of yuppie and baby-boomer angst.
Like a super nova, contemporary liberalism is imploding through its own irreconcilable forces.

Obama Strong on National Security? Of Course Not

Obviously the left has collapsed in its philosophy and morals, but it still gets votes; Rasmussen and Gallup consistently show Romney and Obama in a dead heat. Elizabeth Warren, who is named in this article as an example, is tied against her opponent Scott Brown. Polls that specifically ask the question, “Is your opinion of Elizabeth Warren affected by the Cherokee story?” indicate that people aren’t.
I think the metaphor we need for liberals is the zombie, not the supernova. An organism that can lose its mind and conscience but still walk, ruling by terror and gaining more cohorts by eating the brains of the healthy. They’re not done, not by a long shot.
^THIS
Exactly. This whole liberalism is dying thing is ridiculous. Liberalism is the quest for power and control, which is evil. Evil does not die, it is part of life.
You are right… evil does not die.
What I would like to see though is it being beaten into submission for a time. That’d be nice.
Evil feeds upon itself and everything else. Liberalism is indeed dying, but it’s going to take us all with it as it goes.
Y’all are WACK!
Not only do I not know what you are trying to say, I don’t even know which side of the argument you are on – do you?
But it can be forced into a state of dormancy by the power of united good. Of course good and evil are inseperable, and the struggle to battle our own internal evil{the urge to denigrate and control] creates the force field to subdue evil.
Of course the clowns will still vote for these bozos, but in the end, when taken to its logical conclusion, the state will fail. It isn’t about who votes for liberal bozos. It’s about this peculiar disease in the West called the Reverse Casandra Effect – believing the unbelievable. Liberalism must fail – it just happens to take entire civilizations with it.
Y’all are WACK!!
Usually, as a Progressive, I convince myself that most of those 1% wannabees don’t believe what they write about how liberals are all about power, or evil, or name your epithet. The comments here sadly suggest otherwise.
The Republican AKA Whig party will continue to lose big elections as long as they underestimate the intellectual power and pride of commitment of Progressives. I know a lot of Progressives, and none of them are in favor of handouts. We look for a hand up, not a hand out. I think Progressivism has at its core a desire to find fairness of opportunity and freedom of opportunity. Just because you chose your parents well, or your skin color fortuitously, a citizen should not expect an advantage. If you are not a citizen, you should expect an opportunity to be a full citizen member of society.
Progressives are not interested in worshiping at the altar of the false free-market. We look for a fair market.
So go ahead and call Progressives Godless, foolish or zombies. This Progressive is one of the 1%, and does not fear taxes because they build roads, pay teachers, and keep firemen at the ready. I wasn’t born this way and would be happy to have others follow the road up after me. Earn your own way. If Social Security is so bad, then where are all the starving old people (see 1933)?
Very Truly Yors,
Joe the Carpenter
You mention that Progressives don’t want a “free” market but a “fair” market. What does that mean? How would a fair market look? How would it operate? Don’t just throw out a phrase that sounds pretty, define what you mean by fair markets. Adam Smith defined a free market economy, now it’s your turn to define a fair market economy.
If this is what you want, why do you call yourself a “Progressive”? There is nothing progressive about taking money from one group of people and giving it to another group of people in the name of equality. This is truthfully called stealing. Wealth is the difference between the value gained from what you produce and the value lost from what you consume. Value in the marketplace can only be determined by the individual, who decides for himself whether the price of goods or services is worth it to him/her. Government cannot determine value for the individual and therefore the idea of the “fair economy” cannot be supported by any acceptable axiom. By the way, this is why collectivist economies fail. You follow?
“This Progressive is one of the 1%, and does not fear taxes because they build roads, pay teachers, and keep firemen at the ready”
Those are municipal and state functions paid for by city, county and state taxes. The fact that you throw it out as an argument for federal action shows that you do not understand the Constitution or the threat from centralization of power .
Joe,
I commend you on your well-stated sentiments about what progressivism means to you and how it shapes your beliefs about what the goals of a democratic society should be. I would describe myself as a “conservative libertarian” who’s a registered Republican and in general have no disagreement with most of the goals you set forth. In fact, I don’t even know of any right-leaning people who would disagree with your general statement about fairness or freedom of opportunity. What leads you to believe non-progressives are against equal opportunity?
Similarly, I have yet to meet any conservatives who dispute the necessity of paying taxes to support public infrastructure, fire and police protection, schools, or military. What I gather from your message is that YOU seem to believe that most conservative-leaning people would happily do away with all those things if given the reins of political power. On what basis do you arrive at such a conclusion?
People on both the left and right across the political spectrum mostly desire the same goals; whether it be fairness, longevity, true love, prosperity or whiter teeth. The sharp differences appear when MEANS and METHODS are discussed. I believe you already know this, but for some reason you have chosen to follow along with the lazy, simple-minded approach where differences in means and methods are solely attributed to prejudice, bad faith, or pure venality on the part of those with which you disagree. It’s a rather tired and ineffective and unserious argument.
Agreed with the zombie metaphor.
Every time I read one of these “progressivism is doomed” articles, I want to pull my hair out.
There will always be people who want something for nothing, and there will always be cynical power-hungry people willing to promise something for nothing. Therefore, there will always be some version of liberalism/leftism/progressivism.
If you want to go back further, add “bread and circuses” to your list…
“If a politician found he had cannibals among his constituents, he would promise them missionaries for dinner. ”
HL Mencken
There will always be people who want, but as my ex-wife says occasionally to the kids “How’s it feel to want?”
As grownups, we can look at the unworthy who yearn for the unearned, and say “No”. They will cry, they will pout, they may even scream and kick their feet against the floor. When the temper tantrum is over you once again say “No”.
And eventually they will learn, and decide to work to be worthy, and earn that for which they yearn.
I agree that “The Left”tm is about burned out as an ideology, but the real question is, what comes next? I don’t believe for a minute that the end of history is at hand and we’re all about to become good libertarians. We still have a lot of problems and don’t agree on the best ways to fix them. I’m just hoping that honest people who are concerned with solving problems will give up the leftist pipe dreams and engage in some real discussion about where we go from here. We need their input on issues like urban reform, poverty, foreign aid, immigration, education, social mobility…all the stuff that they claim to want to fix. Let’s start working on some REAL bipartisan solutions and not just throw talking points at each other…
“Let’s start working on some REAL bipartisan solutions and not just throw talking points at each other…”
I used to subscribe to your way of thinking about our problems. The trouble with that line is the fundamental way in which each ‘side’ sees the solution to our problems. Kind of like someone that wants to kill you – how do you negotiate a solution to that? Agree to a half death?
It is quite apparent the Democrats have no love – and no use – for capitalism other than the money that they’d love to take from it. It is very apparent to us on the right that capitalism is what got us to our dominance in business in this world. Just as you cannot negotiate being ‘half dead’ you cannot have half dead capitalism. Certainly there are problems with capitalism but thoughtful regulations are more than capable of reining in the bad practices – try that with communism – marxism – or socialism. In those systems the foxes are guarding the hen house.
Power corrupts and there is no better example of that than in congress and the WH. We need turnover in both to help cure the ills.
I agree with K.T. Leftism is narcissism cast into the form of politics, and you cannot negotiate with narcissism. To a narcissist, an offer of negotiation is a sign of weakness, and a compromise is a surrender.
Although we all know getting rid of the zombies is a necessity, I have yet to hear of a practical cure for the problem of Lib/progressive/socialist/commie ( or whatever they are calling them this week). Are there any working plans underway to cure the problem? We are broke, so interventions and a long stay at the de-programming centers must be evaluated on a cost-effective method must be taken into consideration. Are these “humans” worth salvaging?
Moving beyond the discussion as to whether the problem needs to be dealt with we must start a discussion as how to .A “nuts and bolts” plan must be implemented ASAP as this is time-sensitive.
You are correct, but we can never expect Congress or the Executive to give up any of their power.
Therefore, we must find another way and as luck would have it, our Forefathers, with great insight into the hearts of men, gave us Article V of the Constitution.
This unique article gives us, the Citizens of the Several States, the right to call a Constitutional Convention and rewrite our founding documents to gain a ‘More Perfect Union’. Article V does not give Congress the option to call a Convention, the words are ‘shall call’and then step aside while the Citizens of the Several States work their magic.
With this power: WE can create Term Limits and restrict Consecutive Terms. WE can set the Salaries and Benefits of all elected Officials of the Federal Government. WE can stop the appointing of Czars and any other crap bureaucrats. WE can abolish the Privately Owned Federal Reserve System. WE can create a National Currency Reserve System directly under the U.S. Treasury, with 50 State Reserve Banks and a Controlling Board of 51 Citizens, one from each State and one from teh National Reserve. We can create a directive stopping Congress from exempting themselves from any law that falls on the rest of the Citizens. We can create a law that says the SCOTUS must declare the Constitutionallity of any law before it is implemented, not years afterward. We can define within the Constitution exactly what a ‘Natural Born Citizen’ is and we will never have another Obama.
Think about it. We already have a Nationwide Organization to move this action forward. It is called the TEA PARTY, it is active in every State. We can force a Constitutional Convention even before the next election. Join the TEA PARTY and lets get into the fight…
Naive…
Opening a Constitutional Convention presents the likelihood of our basic freedoms being negated while “positive freedoms” from liberal wet dreams are established.
The Founders made the amendment process difficult for a reason. In our history, the Constitution is often the only thing that has prevented the government from running roughshod over the citizenry.
“I think the metaphor we need for liberals is the zombie, not the supernova. An organism that can lose its mind and conscience but still walk, ruling by terror and gaining more cohorts by eating the brains of the healthy.”
Both analogies work. American Heritage dictionary defines supernova as “A rare celestial phenomenon involving the explosion of most of the material in a star, resulting in an extremely bright, short-lived object that emits vast amounts of energy.” Liberals must have huge amounts of light on them at all times, as does a supernova. . . except when their programs & policies fail (explode) – and that’s when they become rare (or, nowhere to be found). One difference is with liberals, the (spot)light comes first, the explosion next, then the rarity (disappearance). Barney Frank & Chris Dodd’s involvement in the housing crisis & Fannie & Freddie’s collapse is an example here.
And like supernova, liberals are also energetic . . . they never stop pushing, scratching, muscling & inching their way toward totalitarianism over the rest of us. Conservatives generally believe there are enough laws and that adding more creates more bureaucracy, more government, more taxes, more control by the state over us, and thus, less freedom. Liberals believe there are never enough laws – your life must be micromanaged by a myriad of laws, rules, regulations, codes, policies, ordinances, statutes and bureaucrats, and further, that you must be taken care of by the state, from cradle to grave, else you will self-destruct. Bloomberg’s recent attempt to ban super-sized sodas is an example here.
Your zombie analysis has merit, too. Liberals truly have lost their minds, and yet, they still live & breathe and try to rule over the rest of us by terror, just as you say. (“No, you can’t have a 32oz Slurpee! Now have a donut & shut up!”) I would also add that the really sad part is that we have allowed them to take control of public schools making it much easier for them gain more cohorts by eating the brains of the young healthy. And just as with zombies, shooting them (figuratively, not literally) doesn’t help, either. Liberals just got shot in Wisconsin, but to no avail, as they refuse to accept it and continue to march forward, seeking to eat our brains and convert us into their fold.
Love it! Beautifully said. We need to say it again and again. Expecially when the media lets perps like Dodd and Frank escape with out any notice of their culpability.
The animal world gives us better analogies or metaphors: The Cowbird lays its eggs in the nests of other birds. These other birds raise the baby cowbirds which push the rightful nest owning baby birds from the nest thereby killing them. Meanwhile the adult cowbirds congregate in little groups perhaps discussing the good trick they played on the hard working and responsible middle class birds.
And then Aesop tells us about the ant and the grasshopper except in the Liberal World the ants would be forced to feed the grasshopper because the grasshopper is a victim.
two thumbs up!
+1
If I’m not mistaken, right before they explode, supernovas colapse in, on of themselves. They expand to a point where they no longer can sustain their size. This followed by a gravitational colapse and tremendous explosion. Like I said, it has been a while, but if my memory is somewhat intact, this is the case. Liberalism’s nutshell.
The true success of the left has been its ability to leverage the efforts of the small number of its true believers with resources extracted from all citizens, including the left’s most strident opponents. In order to be defeated, the left must be pried like a barnacle off the ship of state. It is time to revive an important concept from the mid 1990s that of defunding the left. Without the steady stream of political money and resources acquired from taxpayers and funneled through entities like ACORN and public employee unions, the left will cease to be politically competitive. Walker’s reforms were a good start. The dramatic drop in membership and dues will cause the employee unions to lose most of their clout, paving the way for further reforms.
Been saying this for about five years. Tax them into oblivion. But nobody on our side will get on board. It is our side that protects the money on the left which the left uses against us.
Why not create a wealth tax on Buffett and the uber wealthy? Why not tax the wealthy left at a higher level around 40%. Why not tax union dues? Why not tax punitive awards of lawyers and law firms? Why not create an entertainment tax on Hollweird and pro-sports? Why not tax leftist foundations and charities who support leftist political 527s and groups?
I don’t get it. We can always make an exemption for business owners with less than 100 employees…..
If voters allow it the left will tax and regulate the host until they kill it.
I like the zombie metaphor, but think what precedes it is worth a mention.
While they do suck at solving ‘real’ problems, they didn’t start out brain dead. They were just envious, ill-prepared betas (if that) whose minds are focused on a more immediate problem:
“How can I create the impression that I’m intellectually and morally superior, compassionate, and worldly…really cool – without actually having to do anything?”
The answer is as easy as signing up for one’s favorite progressive cause. Thanks to Hollywood and the MSM. It’s a magical social ‘brand’ of sorts, and assumption (by idiots) of the superior attributes mentioned above is automatic. That’s your typical progressive voter and the reason they are so adverse to a reasoned debate on any of the issues.
Those Now Describing Themselves As “Liberals” Are Very Sick People!
And let me be clear from get go that I mean sick in the clinical sense because only a sick person welcomes his own demise.
Liberalism is the manifestation of the sickness and political correctness is the virus that they are spreading!
Starting at the top, or maybe the bottom depending on how you look at it, we have Obama who was an active communist just 13 years ago …

RE: Treyvon Martin Meme;
According to Reverend Al, is “all too common” that whites are killing blacks.
But the statisticss don’t bear that out.
What they do show is that blacks kill blacks more often than whites kill blacks.
The also show that whites kill whites more often than blacks kill whites.
.
BUT
.
They show by a ratio of 3.774 to 1 that blacks kill whites more often than whites kill blacks.
The also show that though Blacks are roughly 12% of the Population, Black on Black murder accounts for 33.23% of all murders.
Add to that, the numbers show that Blacks committ 52.22 percent of all murders, Whites commit 47.08 percent of all murders and other commit 0.7 percent of all murders.
That’s math, not racism.
Check out the Statistics for yourself
http://bjs.ojp.usdoj.gov/content/homicide/race.cfm
NOTE: the source is the D.O.J. dot GOV!
Keep in mind these statistics were compiled by the FBI, which clumps whites and hispanics together under the category “white.” The real eye-openner would be if the two were classified independently. Keeping the two together conceals the fact that American white non-hispanics are probably about as likely to commit violent crime as Europeans.
Keep in mind, that the fact of some black criminality – about 6% of the black population – does not justify treating the rest of the black population – 94% – as inherently suspect. Bringing up black crime statistics to justify the shooting of a specific black tells me that ,not only are you and idiot, but you’re also a bigot. For some strange reason, blacks always seem to be judged by the worst of blacks, whereas whites never want to be judged by the worse of whites.
Spoken like a true leftist race hustler. Blacks will suffer until they accept reality and deal with the pathologies of the culture. I teach medical students, quite a few of them black. It is interesting that foreign born blacks, from Africa or the Caribbean, have none of the victim status pathologies of American born blacks and do well in school, taking advantage often of programs intended for the amelioration of the traditional slavery effects on the present generation. It is tragic that race hustlers like Al Sharpton perpetuate the myth of white racism when the problem is actually the opposite.
Trayvon Martin’s Facebook page does all the demonizing of that poor kid, abandoned by his parents and caught up in the “sizzurp” culture of black inner city youth.
Have you heard of the drug “Lean”, which is a southern rapper favorite?
Trayvon Martin’s Facebook pages were deleted soon after his death. However, they have been retrieved, as they were and are part of public internet record.
In an investigation by a blogger who calls himself “The Conservative Treehouse” – you will find Trayvon’s Facebook pages and clues of Trayvon’s life. Connecting dots led to new information and more dots to connect. It is riveting, painstakingly documented and photo-backed.
Google: “The Conservative Treehouse Trayvon Martin”
In the 12 month period before his death, Trayvon’s Facebook dialogue refers to “DMX”. “DXM” is an abbreviation for the cough suppressant Dextromethorphan Hydrobromide — which is the active ingredient in the cough-syrup brand Robitussin.
The evidence (from Trayvon on Facebook) suggests that Trayvon was concocting a risky drug called “Lean”. If this is not just supposition, but fact, then Trayvon may have been quite ill, and possibly affected mentally and physically the night of the conflict. Furthermore, the Florida medical examiner may not have checked for “Lean”.
Mr. Treehouse shows photos of the type of fruit juice Trayvon carried that night: Watermelon Fruit Juice Cocktail by the Arizona label. These are two of the popular culture preferences for “Lean”.
Three ingredients make up a Lean cocktail: 1) Carbonated fruit juice,), 2) plus codeine or cough syrup and 3)candy (like skittles) Mr. Treehouse pulls an internet “drug dictionary” source into the discussion. This suggests that “Lean” is a very powerful drug and has dangerous side effects. Used often it can destroy the liver and cause personality changes.
I raised two boys. I thought I had my eyes open, but if I had found an empty Arizona can with a fruit juice face – and an empty candy wrapper – I am sure my antenna would have stayed down.
Speaking of Trevon Martin what ever happened to all the news about that case, oh yeah all kinds of facts came out and so now there is silence, wonder if there is still a bounty by the Black Panther Party for George Zimmerman DEAD OR ALIVE since that bounty and the declaration of a race war I now carry at least two weapons as well as many magazines daily!
The heart of man is truly wicked. color doesn’t matter, the heart matters.
I believe Zimmerman is innocent. I believe he was attacked.. I could be wrong, but the jury will decide..
Jury: Let OJ off the first time, let Edwards off this month, let Casey Anthony off. Yea , I really trust juries.
Another idiot lefty who tries so hard to have an open mind that his brain fell out. I submit that if the approach on a dark and deserted street of a group of young white men in business suits and the approach on that same street of a group of young black men in hoodies causes the same reaction in you, then you are a prime candidate for this year’s Darwin Award.
Actually, race doesn’t even have any part of it. Imagine a group of black kids, dressed neatly, or even in suits vs a bunch of white kids, hip-hopped from top to bottom. Which side of the street will you walk on now?
The key element is culture not race. Embrace of the cool, gangsta’ counter-culture has killed any chance these kids have of integrating successfully into the mainstream. Lost lives, lost opportunity.
Race is a component in crime, whether it occurs in Detroit or Dakar, in London or Lagos. To blame American “pathologies” for the disproportionate rate of crime committed by people of African descent is simply to ignore global realities. There is a reason why the people of the Eurasian continent resist invasion by the various sub-Saharan peoples, and it has a lot to do with self-protection.
Well, unlike lefties I have a little sense and I’ve been around a couple of different blocks a time or two. Like any sane person, if I were approached by black kids in suits and white kids in hoodies, then I’d look for more subtle signals. Formost as we came close to each other, if either group insisted on possessing the whole sidewalk rather than leaving me room, I’d start feeling for my pistol; yeah, I usually have one. I’ve seen that form of confrontation with punks of all colors, affects, and clothing style; we’re going to force the old guy off the curb. Well, this old guy might just threaten to shoot you over it. “I was afraid officer, really afraid.” See how easily it comes.
Your personal attack shows that you clearly are unable to face the facts!
The other point I’d make is you are completely unable to read.
I did not bring up the statistics to ‘Justify’ the shooting of Treyvon Martin by George Zimmerman.
I did, however, post the statistics as a Refutation of the Assertions made by Reverand Al Sharpton. Now then, if you read my first sencence, you know the one where I say, “According to Reverend Al, is “all too common” that whites are killing blacks.” it makes it pretty clear that was the intent of my dissertation of the statistics.
However, since you had no cognitave argument for those facts, you chose to create a Straw Man that I was “Bringing up black crime statistics to justify the shooting of a specific black” which by the context of my post I was clearly NOT. You then justify a Personal Attack based on the False Straw Man you yourself created.
Perhaps in the future you can stick to what is said in order to respond. (Of course then you can’t make yourself feel superior while making other people look bad if you do that.)
Please put the above info on the Progressive/Lib/ Black sites
So, youre saying that a mere “6″% is responsible for 33% of the homocides?
Yeah, that makes me feel SO much better about the “darkening” of my neighborhood
Actually, he’s saying that 6% of 12%, which is 0.72%, is responsible for 33% of the homocides?
No, he’s saying that 0.72% commit 52.22% of all homicides.
If you’re going to do that, you need to compare it to the percentage of whites in the population who murder. What you just did was meaningless. Both percentages are small numbers.
But “jd” already did that – “Whites commit 47.08 percent of all murders…”
So, if we assume the same fraction (of murderers) that Mike Giles picked, 6%, and that whites make up approximately 60% of the population, it follows:
6% of 60% equals 3.6%. Against a total population of 300 million, means that just under 11 million “whites” commit 47% of all murders.
0.72% of 300 million, or just over 2 million “blacks”, commit 52.22% of homicides.
Wow, “blacks” have a homicide productivity about 6 times that of “whites”.
Hope that clears it up for you.
Snork, you need to compare both small numbers against one another in order to get the really big number that is the basic fact illustrated by these disturbing statistics. If you get confused by numbers less than 1, try multiplying both numbers by 1000 and then compare them. But I will help you in case you mess up your numbers. Black people are far more likely to commit murder than white people in this country. The question is, why isn’t that ever part of our, seemingly never ending, race relations discussions?
First of all, race is incidental to the Martin shooting. Zimmerman shot him in self defense, not because Martin was black. Focus on that, it’s important; Martin was pounding Zimmerman’s head into the sidewalk, during an unprovoked attack, after Zimmerman had broken off following Martin and was returning to his house.
Secondly, the statistics clearly show that shootings by blacks, of both blacks and whites, are far in excess of proportion to their percentage of the population. Combine this with the “gansta” culture prevalent among young black men (and it’s a quite literal term, originating with the clothing and culture of black gang members and prisoners) and tell me why I shouldn’t be twitchy around young black men? It’s all very well for you to tell me to not judge a book by its cover, but when the price for picking the wrong book is getting shot, I’m going to be very careful about examining the dust jacket art!
I have a friend who used to be a public school teacher in Baltimore. Most of her students were black. A small fraction of her class wanted to learn. A larger percentage didn’t really care, but didn’t bother her or other students. Unfortunately, a significant percentage not only hated school but actively disrupted the classes, bullied those students who did want to learn as being “too white”, and actively threatened her. More unfortunately, the administration (Democrat) did nothing about it and refused to give the teachers increased security or any way to remove the disruptors from the classroom.
Citation of fact met with accusation of bigotry, complete with assumption of foul motives.
“…blacks always seem to be judged by the worst of blacks…”
That’s because black culture identifies with the worst of blacks. Yes, there are many examples of good, solidly moral, fully employed, completely functional black people to choose from. But ask yourself who really sets the tone for “blackness” in America today? Who is seen as the rule while normal, successful black people are seen as the exception? Who gets most of the attention, the adulation, the emulation, from black people as well as white people, and why?
Whose fault is it? Is it white racist propaganda designed to marginalize black people? Is it white liberal “compassion,” so focused on black people’s problems that it can’t see the “normal” aspects of African American life? Is it capitalism, making tons of money from movies and music sensationalizing black crime and dysfunction? Or is it black culture itself, accepting and even cultivating its dysfunctional aspects rather than rejecting them?
You’re the expert – tell us.
Too right! It’s not Clarence Thomas or Colin Powell or even Barack Obama who are held up as examples of what a black man ought to be. Nor do Condi Rice or Oprah serve as examples in the gangsta culture. All of the above would’ve been accused of ‘acting white’ because they did well in school (maybe not Obama, not sure about that) and what’s more, CARED about education and improving themselves. Taken in light of the experiences of Frederick Douglass and many other former slaves who were denied education by the racist culture of their times it is those doing the name calling who are acting white, and in the worst sense; they are the modern-day slave owner substitutes, doing everything possible to guarantee that no ‘uppity’ blacks ever escape the plantation. Al Sharpton, Jesse Jackson et al, going back to W.E.B. Dubois, have all done everything they could to build & maintain that plantation of the mind, and those who escape, like Clarence Thomas especially, cannot be enough detested.
Mike Giles,
You say “bringing up black crime statistics to justify the shooting of a specific black tells me that, not only are you and idiot, but you’re also a bigot.” But the post that cites the statistics did not try to do what you said the poster was doing. The statistics show that there is no statistically significant problem of white on black crime, that whatever happened between Martin and Zimmerman was co-opted into a false narrative and that the real issue is young black males murdering young black males at an epidemic rate.
The real issue is young black males murdering. Who they happen to murder today is a matter of luck.
I’d agree with you except for one thing – he didn’t.
By the way, “bigotry” is about religion, not race. The word for that is “racism”.
Trayvon Martin was not shot because he was black. He was shot because he attacked Zimmerman, pinned him to the ground, and was beating him to a pulp, marshal arts style. All of the is independently verified by the injury reports, and by an independent eye witness, all of which support zimmermans testimony. And while it is still true that the majority of blacks are not criminals, they are criminals at a much higher rate than whites.
This particular black, TM was shot after he assaulted GZ, broke GZ’s nose, knocked GZ down, and was smacking GZ’s head into the ground. The bullet was fired through TM’s shirt while the shirt was about an inch away from his skin, meaning that TM was on top of GZ leaning over, as one witness says, striking GZ.
Just the facts. The gun didn’t cycle when fired, indicating that TM was holding the slide as it was fired. TM was less than 18, so by preventing TM from getting the gun, GZ prevented him from committing two felonies. Theft and illegal posession of a firearm while under age.
And aside from the bullet wound and the marks on his hands, TM didn’t have a mark on him, indicating that TM was the aggressor. Couple that with his previous thuggery and anger management issues, the cops made the right case when they investigated and didn’t arrest, didn’t charge GZ.
No, not a racist. Two of my children are black. What is your explanation for the high black on black murder rates? I home school my kids to keep them away from people like TM.
Seems to me that “judging whites by the worst of whites” was exactly what was happening in much of the Trayvon Martin case commentary.
“Like a super nova, contemporary liberalism is imploding through its own irreconcilable forces.”
Yes it is, but what will contemporary liberals do after the implosion? I don’t see many of them converting to conservative thought. They may well remain true believers in something that has gone extinct – like Stalinists after the USSR imploded. If so, there will be millions of angry socialists who feel lost, forsaken and angry because their belief survived the death of their religion.
After mourning at the funeral of democratic socialism where will they turn? Some years ago, after mourning at the death of Communism many people rushed straight to worship at the altar of radical Environmentalism. But radical Environmentalism is also on the way out so what are the alternatives?
I expect that democratic socialists will find new altars at which to worship. I don’t expect worship at these altars to generate peace and goodwill for and towards the rest of us. It will be a while before we see a happy ending.
The “altar” is there and always has been there and described since at least Plato. It is called “utopia or utopianism” and, in each and every interration, calls upon a specific elite to provide for the unter mench. In turn, that inexorably leads to absolute power and tyranny, led by the “elite” and providing that “elite” with money, power, and prestige. The siren song is loud. It was noted by Thomas Jefferson while he and others were writing the Constitution. Its threat was well understood by the founders; they feared it would awaken at some point in our history. They were right. Around 1910 the U.S. professoriate class outlined a program to change America from the land of the individualist to the land of the sheep. It was pushed by Wilson, FDR, and LBJ, aided and abetted always by the dons of academia. Deprogramming is a long and difficult task. The siren song is loud.
For more in-depth discussion on this, Mark Levin does a bang-up job in his book “Ameritopia”. He cites every reference you made and hundreds more and how the framers of the Constitution knew that humans have the tendency to become despots.
There has been more infiltration of communist ideas into the Democratic Party than most realize. I wrote about that here: http://clarespark.com/2012/06/03/connecting-vs-connecting-the-dots/. Irrationalists have been in charge since the beginning of the Progressive movement, and it was only exacerbated in the late 1930s. Rational analysis would lead us back to limited government. The Clinton administration was a rare example of centrism among Democrats, not to be repeated with the current dispensation.
The sheeple are weak and ignorant. Thus they do not want to compete, but hate the “man” for his successes. They are easy fodder for the neo-bolsheviks. A promise of “a chicken in every pot” , free cellphones, health care ,food etc are the opiate of the masses, not religion.
Little do they know that, once the marxists take control, they will be relegated to the bread lines , akin to the soviet union workers paradise. They will be told how many children they can have and when its time for them to die.Only the most obsequious will attend university and then only for government approved studies.
The elite technocrats and apparatchiks will have their private planes and dachas on the coast. You see “All animal are equal, except some are more equal than others” (orwell).
The amazing, incomprehensible march of marxism is playing out before our eyes. The great American experiment is circling the drain, a victim of its own system of democracy. The weak and ignorant will get to vote and eventually demographics will prevail and they will control it all.
This phenomena is not new. Weak, ignorant and lazy sheeple have been around since time immemorial. It’s just that now they have the vehicle to succeed.
You lost every serious-minded adult on this site at “sheeple.”
Le Cracquere, we can all only hope that you are one of the “lost”.
He lost me as well. That some are so comfortable to delve into the depths of misanthropy in order to make a political point should give every thoughtful soul pause.
Casually turning fellow citizen into rhetorical animals is so painfully disjointed from what it means to be a conservative that further discussion is not possible.
Your self appointment as the word-police is also a great and deep contribution. Are you simply incapable of appreciating the core of the comment — Go away.
AVET, whild some of what you have written is true. I have a challenge for you. In keeping with leadership principles, wrap your message in more positive terms, keep the faith brother. America in NOT going down the drain, and the reason in in you, and many of us who will not allow it. Envelope your beliefs in America in an activism that will support the principles of freedom, liberty, and constitutional conservatism. Don’t be seduced by the current difficulties into darkness. Lift yourself up for good, and your Nation. We need your service again, now in a different manner. Thank you for your service. Semper Fi. God Bless America.
Afghanvet, Le Cracquere is correct in that the use of the term sheeple does not help, but your comment is not lost. I understand your frustration and anger, especially since your experience in the military gives you a perspective that most civilians don’t quite grasp. I’m not sure of your age or branch of service, but thank you from the bottom of my heart for your service. My son, a USN officer, is about to deploy on his third deployment in six years. I have always worried during these deployments, but the one coming up with the situation in the Middle East, Israel’s dilemma, Iran’s belligerence, and a Leftist President willingness to do anything to get re elected, gives me great pause. My son is also very disenchanted with the society he is risking all to defend. We are in a cultural war as well, and at some point we all need to ask ourselves what side we are on. I hope that more than 50% of us will say, God, Liberty, and E Pluribus Unum.
Afghanvet, You’ve earned the right to use whatever descriptive phrasing you’d like. This ain’t no dang English class anyways. ;-)
Besides, I actually like the word “sheeple”. It’s perfectly descriptive and apropos when talking about people who behave like sheep. And hey, Wikipedia has a page for it.
We’ll let “serious-minded adults” like Le Cracquere look down at us backwoods rubes. Our skin is thick.
California has long walked in the path that was not pleasing to the Lord. They chose all that was degraded and unworthy of uplifting the spirit of mankind and desired all that brought only debauchery and misery.
So, that is what they have. It is what they chose and it always get worse.
The lefty socialist/marxist self entitlement, self worship is the dregs of intellectual comprehension.
Who is actually fooded by calling organised envy and covetness as ‘social justice’? One can not simply re-name evil and thereby make it a good thing. It is time for the lefties to understand that evil is not able to build. You can call it by any name you like, in order to deceive, but it still can not build. All that one can get from this futile effort is continual poverty, crime and destruction. Nothing else will it provide.
People must return to the old ways, that which was good and walk in them. Until the delusional can comprehend this … they will always fail.
Those of us in the wonderland of liberal academia surely have our own stories. So I will tell just some of mine. Years ago, before ill health ended my career, I, Full Prof. at Uni. Colo, Boulder, was one of the 6 or 7 profs., along with a dean, who decided who gets tenure, promotion and more money. A young mathematician wanted early tenure, promotion and salary increase. His department made a very negative evaluation. Turned down unanimously. Two weeks later, the mathematician returned and identified himself as a member of a specific genetic minority. Vote was 7 to 1 for immediate tenure, etc., and without much discussion. (The reader can guess who was the one nay-sayer.) I learned how skin complexion evidently transforms one into a scholar. (Alas–and I mean this seriously, this sort of preference decisions makes me wonder about the wunderkind Obama. I would like to read his uni. papers.) One person in my department, a person of female identity, was, against the full vote of all members to the contrary, “appointed” by the dean to be chairperson. One year later this “brilliant” (sic) scholar of two articles was found worthy (sic) to be appointed Dean of Research. (One of the articles was so poorly written that it would deserve a deconstruction from Cashill.) One year I was to be away for a year (having won a research grant) and, pursuant to orders from on-high, a selection process was enacted with the guarantee that a female replacement would be, “objectively” of course, found. For this one year job some 50 male applications were placed in one pile and ca. 50 female applications in another. The male applications were at NO point examined. Not a single one! No surprise that the “objective” choice was for a person of female persuasion. (I was happy upon returning to work a year later to learn that my “male” colleagues had chosen for my replacement a Medusa of Greek fame. She was a fury of discontent. At least justice can be “poetic” at times.) I do not mean to imply that I saw no discrimination against women or other minorities. I did see some, particularly when women left the room where collective decisions were being made under a male dean’s direction. But, overwhelming I can tell tales that illustrate Hanson’s point. — By the way, if I had only known then that there may well be some Neanderthal genes left over in my Germanic DNA, I could have anticipated Prof. (sic) Warren with her supposed tommyhawk progenitor sometime wayback then and been immediately appointed president of my university. A Neanderthal on the faculty would certainly have trumphed Warren’s Sitting Bull(sh-t) identity. My silly comparison here has been made as a poor comic relief against the very real schiziophrenia inherent in liberalism, leftism, greenism or obamaism. To obtain the ideal desired, one is, indeed, forced to undertake cul-de-sac actions resulting in a zero/zero game. And, alas, such a game is still being played.
I think you’re onto something there with that Neanderthal gene thing, a new wrinkle, a new category of oppressed. :(
We’ve compromised ourselves with selection and advancement on the basis of category as opposed to talent and competence.
Michelle and Barack both agitated at Harvard for more minority hiring, for faculty choices based not on personal competence but on melanin in the skin.
(Joe Biden (aka Crazy Joe) told us just last week that without a hand up neither Michelle nor his own wife Jill would have made it. I would imagine that insulted the hell out of M&J, but they had to keep their mouths shut.)
We now have many morons up the food chain in positions of real decision making that affect all our lives.
I still haven’t heard back from Rome for my demand for restitution on the centuries of slavery and execution of my Christian ancestors. THEY OWE ME!
Hear, Hear; perhaps we can start a movement? Anybody here with ancestors that were U.S. sailors circa 1700 and captured by Barbary Pirates? (There were more white slaves in Africa at this time than blacks slaves in North America).
The idea of one tenet of liberalism trumping another sets up some interesting conflicts. One small but clear example I’ve seen is when Native Americans are allowed to hunt buffalo in case of herd overpopulation, or go whaling to preserve their culture. For conservatives, who have guiding principles, conflicts are easier to resolve. But for those who just follow a cobbled-together set of values that aren’t necessarily related to each other, it’s a problem. And that’s why there is so much internecine fighting on the left.
It’s simpler than that; They all hate each other. They only hate conservatives more and that’s the only glue that holds them to a task. Left to their own devices, they stab each other in the back every chance they get.
I broke up more than one lefty union “solidarity coaltion” by tossing a bone to one of them and then as they tore each other to shreds trying to get that bone, picking them off one by one; never fails.
Professor, I’m a professor too – actually, an adjunct looking for tenure. It sounds as if some crimes were committed in your school: violations of the 1964 Civil Rights Act. White males were surely the victims. It’s really so sad to hear; this happens all around academia. If only someone would stand up for these victims of leftist discrimination! Someone – someone like – you…
In other words, people like me suffer in these stories, and guys like you who are in a position to help and are protected by tenure, fail to lift a finger. But – it makes for a great story! Wow, those crazy academics!
Edmund Burke is supposed to have said that all that is required for the triumph of evil is that good men do nothing. What did you DO?
Basking in your victimhood, are you? Poor, poor you! It’s so easy to point a finger. Nothing so obnoxious as the self-righteously wronged
Professor: interesting story. I respectfully request you use the ‘enter’ key from time to time to create paragraphs. It makes your post easier to read on screen, thanks.
This is the best blog.
Dr. Hanson’s portrayal of Warren as Harvard’s “pet” Native American in recompense for the legion of “disadvantaged” rendered by The Great Society is brilliant.
I agree. “Pet” is exactly right.
“…contemporary liberalism is imploding through its own irreconcilable forces.”
And not a moment too soon, either.
Unfortunately, as their ideology implodes, their “humanity” will explode. Or, does anybody really believe that ex-”peacenicks” are about “peace”, let alone peaceful? Remember the 60′s and 70′s. Remember last year (OW’ers) and be wary, and be prepared!
“Note that President Obama — $5 trillion in new debt, “stimulus,” millions added to food stamps, unemployment benefits vastly expanded, near-zero interest rates, enormous subsidies for wind and solar — never concedes his blue-state neo-socialism is not working (even though it is almost impossible to stymie the U.S. economy).”
A liberal will never, ever, admit that he or she is wrong. They would rather see the entire country go down in flames rather than just say that their silly economic policies were a failure. And what do you call people who would rather fail than admit that they have a problem and can’t correct it? They sound just like alcoholics, who think that just one more drink will be eough for them, or that they can really stop drinking anytime they want to. Just one more “stimulus,” say the liberals like Obama, and that will put America back to work again. “Hey, we can stop spending anytime we want to,” say the liberals, “and balance a budget, too.” But they never do. Only Bill Clinton did that, but he was fortunate enough to have a booming economy and rapidly diminishing defense spending and cheap gas prices. But even here, Clinton still had an enormous Federal government and did precious little to reduce the size of it. It’s one thing to reduce spending, quite another to reduce the size of the government that created all that big spending to begin with.
So will the American people finally admit this fall that liberalism does not work? They can admit it by NOT voting for Obama. But if we do not admit it and decide that the only cure for our economic woes is much more spending, we had better start learning Greek, because we will certainly be no better than any of the failed European social-welfare states. And that would be a crime.
“So will the American people finally admit this fall that liberalism does not work?”
The answer is “no”. Most of the American people don’t have the remotest idea what is going on. Hopefully, they will stay at home on election day. We conservatives may not be outnumbered by liberals but we are vastly outnumbered by the uninformed, the stupid, and the indifferent, i.e., the liberal constituency.
Bill Clinton didn’t balance the budget; Newt Gingrich, the dot-com boom, and some trick accounting in the Social Security program balanced the budget. Bill Clinton has spent the years since claiming all the credit.
Actually, nobody balanced the budget. Congress spent at a deficit every year Clinton was in office. Our national debt increased every year Clinton was in office. Nothing was “balanced”; there were no surpluses.
…it is only annoying that a Senator Obama on the back bench from time to time is grandstanding and demagoguing Guantanamo, calling for “millions of green jobs” in subsidized solar and wind industries, or insisting on “cap and trade”; but no one in his right mind would ever vote such a megaphone into power, no more than young Phaethon would be given Helios’s chariot or Narcissus would be pried from his reflecting pool.
Obama’s philosophy of government: “I ordered it. I’m President. Why isn’t it happening ? Why didn’t it happen yesterday ?”
That’s what you get when you elect a pure tyro, a simple wordsmith, an individual with virtually no firsthand experience in painstakingly building anything.
He’d exceeded the Peter Principle on day one.
Pretty funny words out of our Crony Capitalist in Chief, the guy granting indulgence to supporters & bundlers
“Turning a blind eye to the cronyism in our midst can put us all in jeopardy … and we cannot accept that in the United States of America.”
…elites can fabricate oppressed backgrounds, often through mere assertion, hyphenation, and accentuation, to take a guilt-ridden class to the cleaners, in the unspoken bargain that in return the latter can continue to enjoy their rather insular lives apart from the world of Trayvon Martin.
The defining characteristic of individuals like Teddy Kennedy & John Kerry, so called élites in general: lip service on the plight of those I deem “lesser”>>conscience assuaged>>unbridled & guilt free self-indulgence.
The only descriptive concept missing from an otherwise splendid biopsy of 21st Century American Society is “parasite” or “parasitic”.
And splice this essay with “Zombie’s” article at:
http://pjmedia.com/lifestyle/2012/06/04/i-just-heard-the-n-word-30000-times/
and you have the complete mural of American society eating itself for sustenance.
Only through expose’s, such as these, do I experience any elixir of lucidity in today’s media.
Dr. Hanson is, indeed, necessary consumption for basal intellectual nutrition.
“Biopsy?” Try autopsy.
It’s not dead yet, although there is some necrotic tissue (California, Detroit, others).
Okay “Fail”;
Would “necrotizing fasciitis” be more to your liking?
Bring out the flesh-eating maggots? (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maggot_therapy – it’s still used, BTW, in extreme cases)
used because maggots only consume dead flesh.
“Yet Warren — pink and blond — managed to con Harvard University and the law profession in general.” Really? Harvard is a co-conspirator and more guilty than the Fake Indian #2. Harvard responding to liberal ideas, government mandated minority quotas. Harvard conned American conservatives—again. Karma for Harvard.
Choices in hiring and enrollment at universities these days seem primarily a game of filling categories.
In so many areas the federal government is “out there” demanding you satisfy some arcane requirement under Title whatever under threat of withdrawing funding. If you fill out and file all the correct forms, those small minded bureaucrats (is that redundant?) are usually satisfied you’ve done your duty, bent your hiring & enrollment procedures to meet their nutty parameters.
Reaping what we’ve sown.
and fairly applied, sometimes sheer talent and meritorious accomplishment in academia are the very grounds for one’s not being hired or appointed or promoted to a position, or for being denied tenure, or even for one’s outright dismissal from a position.
There’s an awful lot of venomous envy around.
Supernova seems an apt metaphor. For those not familiar with it: When a massive star runs out of fusion fuel, it burns the ash in a faster, hotter, shorter fusion cycle, making heavier ash. Then again, and again. The last round of fusion produces no heat, but actually cools the interior. The star implodes then explodes.
Although I like the metaphor supernova, the current administration is more like a fire with no heat. A torch incapable of kindling. A supernova bestows an amount of technology well beyond the capability of these dolts. If they had any concept of history or science, we would not be in this black hole.
Although consuming a significant proportion of ether at the moment, it’ll be rendered a mere smudge in the history of mankind.
I think the “supernova” metaphor is excellent, for the reason no one else has mentioned:
When a truly supermassive star finishes devouring its nuclear fuel and self-destructs (destroying everything within a decent fraction of a light-year in the process), its remnant core is so dense that nothing can stop its collapse into nothingness and it becomes –
a black hole.
Ex nihilo, I had to look that one up, “something out of nothing, as in the creation”. That just about sums up the Kenyan by itself.
It’s the Nobel Peace Prize, not the Noble Peace Prize.
Well, it used to be noble…
4. of an exalted moral or mental character or excellence: a noble thought. Synonyms: lofty, elevated, high-minded, principled; magnanimous; honorable, estimable, worthy, meritorious. Antonyms: ignoble, base; vulgar, common.
5. admirable in dignity of conception, manner of expression, execution, or composition: a noble poem. Synonyms: grand, dignified, august. Antonyms: undignified, disreputable, unrespected.
(from dictionary.com)
How noble of you to point that out.
Actually, in the case of Obama it is the Nobel Not-George-Bush Prize.
Only truly devout and mind-twisted liberals could determine that a Hispanic man was white and a white woman was Indian.
Excellent!
My admiration and respect for VDH knows no bounds. However, I must insist. These are NOT “liberals”. There is nothing remaining that is “liberal” about them. To call them “liberals” is to promote and advance them and to give them a credibility they do not deserve and we ourselves, our nation and the world a disservice by being lazy about this. This is not me merely being picky, words have meaning and we are losing the communication war be waged against us so badly, we need to start paying attention.
1)Let’s stop pussyfooting around, nibbling around the edges of the real issue. This is small c communism set loose on the world. It comes today not marching through the streets, launched from the Red Square. It comes cloaked in soft pastels of “liberalism”, hidden by a 60′s and 70′s retro watercolor mask, it’s true face hidden from the world and passed on and promoted by “true believers” too ignorant and too indoctrinated to resist.
2)Small c communism isn’t out to blend in with the free market democracies it hasn’t already destroyed, it is out to obliterate them. It is lead not by a brutal despot backed by the KGB, but by a Fabian backed by ACORN/SEIU.
3)”Liberalism” that gave us the checks and balances of which VDH evoked images of Lake Erie and pollution, marched for racial equality, fair pay… no longer exists. The small c communism that has taken its place seized those half-century old issues and became their taxidermist. It stuffed them and then pretends to the world that they are still living, breathing, animated and relevant today. They aren’t, so we are given daily doses of fraud to help us “believe”.
4)In point of fact, the life-giving sunlight (and transparency) given to issues raised by “liberalism” is gone. That sun that gave off light has blown itself up into a Red Giant, devouring nation after nation in a bloated, overheated bag of gas and solar wind. Small c communism gives off no light, only heat and transparency is replaced by the dark clouds of deceit, distortion and propaganda.
5)The Martin/Zimmerman case and the inane drivel of Warren are the detritus left behind as the Red Giant burns up the fuel of the now permanent “grievance industry”. The Inversion Narrative that is attendant to being a modern day leftist, where you are intolerant, racist, violent, …and you claim the opposite mantle as your own, while you slander the innocent, and you are backed up by a conspiratorial communications apparatus.
The “mainstream” media is no such thing. It’s a propaganda tool of the Red Giant. It is a small c communist outlet, nothing more. It doesn’t represent the “mainstream” of our people. But, we continue to give it power and breathe life into by allowing it to hide behind a name that gives it credibility and strength.
Hollywood dives into small c communism like it was chocolate cake, coming up with lies and distortion smeared across their sneering grins. They have always been attracted to communism, but they LOVE this small c version. It allows them to play a character, rather than deal with life’s brutish reality.
And academia builds the indoctrination farms, while it assists in the destruction of real ones, killing minds and food production in one fell swoop.
6)No, let us not fool ourselves into believing the facade is reality. This is DECIDEDLY NOT “social democracy” or some such watered down thing. It is the Red Giant devouring our Constitution, our laws and regulations, our free market democracy.
It is killing Europe. It has destroyed California, Illinois, Detroit, it is intent on pummeling Judeo-Christian religion and it is no fan of America or Israel.
It is about to “attrition out” elderly, white, stubbornly resistant conservatives and Republicans through healthcare “panels”. Bill Ayers and the Midwest Academy both built this model years ago. Ayers wanted to “get rid” of those who wouldn’t surrender. 25 million of them. “Death panels” do the trick. “We are going to allow you to die” said Robert Reich. This replaces the re-education camps nicely.
This isn’t Stalin marching into Eastern Europe. The Red Giant has crept into Western Europe and into America’s bedrooms through the nightly news, through our movies and TV programs, through our classrooms.
We not only don’t resist, we adopt their words and phrases and give them power.
It is time to make a choice. Wake up or slumber away this land of ours. Pussyfoot around or make a stand.
What comes after the Red Giant won’t be pretty. The One Worlders want…a singularity. And all the dreams of our homeland will be sucked into a giant black hole.
cfbleachers – Well said, especially the point about the use of the title ‘liberal’ for these Leftists. As the Bolsheviks did (when they called themselves, the majority, hence Bolshevik) the Left has absconded with the beguiling titles of ‘liberal’ and ‘progressive’ when it is neither.
arhooley @1 is correct. It’s not a super-nova, it more like zombies or vampires, sucking out the blood of the society until the society is moribund.
VDH – Otherwise, an exellent essay.
Yes, exactly. Everything you’ve said is … the way it actually is.
New words, yes, the least we can do is create some new, more accurate words.
this is the best thing cfb has ever written.
Two themes are relatively unique: the taxidermy of liberal ideas and the recognition that death panels are 100% deliberate and much more explicit than any national pundit would ever say.
Yes, the liberal causes of the 50′s and 60′s have been appropriated and are now simply cynical peas under the shells of the con men marxists: the environment, banishing racism, women’s rights. What an astonishing sight to see noble causes that turned millions of people onto politics now transformed into vehicles to dupe the rubes into following eager commisars as they not so subtly demand to become our rulers for life.
And it’s a pleasant surpise to see a person like cfb, who was until recently the epitome of foolish moderation, now being fully aware that yes, his small c communists want to kill the people they cannot intimidate. In 2012, it seems on the surface to be a shocking concept until you realize that it has been the modus operendi for the marxists for going on two centuries now, and the mo of their predecssors in political domination for oh, about 10,000 years.
It never ends.
Hi CFB;
You’ve nailed it. I’ve been saying it for 30 years that the classical liberal is dead & the Dem party (+ our institutions) has been highjacked by the extreme radical Left of the worst variety. My family, friends & I’ve had direct experience w/ the brutality of the brown & red goons. I call this Moloch the two-headed Hydra – one head brown, the other red. Let us not forget that Nazism/fascism, et al, are a form of left tyranny (national socialism). Even Saddam’s Ba’ath party was a national socialist party. Islam is, therefore, the 3rd head (poison green) of the monster dead-set on destroying the Judeo-Christian civilization. We can blame in large part ourselves since we’ve been warming the snake on our chest for decades.
I am convinced that this November will seal the fate of the USA. It’s up to us, the tireless minority…
BTW, erudite article by VDH, as always & mostly well funded comments; there’s hope, as long as few of us claim, cogito, ergo sum.
I think we need to abandon the C and Marxist terms …and call them what they are: totalitarians …they want total control. And what of Malthus? With all the gaffes and Freudian slips of this admin, it amazes me that the media spin engine hasn’t thrown a rod (a guess we are a nation of idiots… at least the 40 some odd percent that think he’s a nice guy).
They ARE totalitarians, bear.
Stalin was a totalitarian, Mao was a totalitarian, Castro was a totalitarian, Chavez is a totalitarian, the nut in the pajamas was a totalitarian.
What you NEVER see, is a free market democracy and totalitarianism. They don’t mix.
The deeper into the weeds one gets with “socialism”, the closer to totalitarianism it must drift. Because it does not work without an iron fist. Absent the iron fist, it collapses, because you can’t force enough people to be on the “producing” end to hold up all those on the “receiving” end, including the gamers of the system, the insiders, the cheaters and the government gluttons at the public trough.
Absent the abusive dictator, you get…Greece. Spain. Italy. Portugal.
With the abusive dictator you get Venezuela, Cuba, North Korea.
But, let me make this point about why I think the small c communist label is important, bear. In order to obtain power as a small c communist in America, you MUST disguise yourself. Completely. You MUST have an accomplice in this deception in the mass media and mass entertainment and academia settings.
In order to achieve small c communist goals, you must destroy the free market while not letting on that you are doing so, it must look like an accident and you have to then fabricate scapegoats along the way. (recalcitrant Republicans, ATM’s, tsunami’s…the very model of the collapse in Europe, Bush).
Again, this BRAND of totalitarian doesn’t march into America launched from the Red Square, it comes in as a “uniter” of people, with neatly creased pants and a magical teleprompter.
Those Che posters were not an accident, bear. Anita Dunn DID admire Mao.
Totalitarianism isn’t a dirty word to Thomas Friedman…or Barack Obama. And…if you don’t particularly like our Constitution very much…why would it be?
I get all that and agree with you. My point is that for 40 odd percent (the uninitiated that have no clue about ideological subversion and the origins of 20th century totalitarianism) “Communism in its pure for is good”…they ignore the enforcement aspect of the ideology. Contemporaries of mine still spout this nonsense. Even when I argue that any form of government ‘can be good’ but you have to look at its susceptibility to corruption, since as a species we seem to have an inherent corruptibility quotient not much different from other pack species…i.e. you better align with the current (dominant) alpha male.
It’s not that hard to put in terms that the next generation can understand (my kids in their mid to late twenties get it). Unfortunately too many buy off on the arguments thoroughly debunked in VDH’s essays. The spin machines need to be exposed to the useful idiots, that twist and turn with each ridiculous explanation (with or so meticulously contrived nuance)of this administrations policy positions. Private Enterprise is doing just fine…we need more government jobs to grow the economy blah, blah blah. No rational human being buys into this stuff given our current debt bubble, unless they see forgiveness of debt as a human right. We generally call those people thieves. (Not to be confused with good Christians)
CFB — you summarized Hayek’s book, The Road to Serfdom in one sentence: “The deeper into the weeds one gets with “socialism”, the closer to totalitarianism it must drift.” Kudos.
Doctor,
You slice like a hammer.
Thank You.
Irreconcilable forces? Isn’t that Marxist-speak, like “internal contradictions”?
Whatever happens in November the lock on education, K-12, higher ed, and now preschools, will continued unabated until we do an autopsy of precisely what is driving the corruption.
Republican politicians pushing charters and vouchers need to listen up that the real political sovereign in education at all levels remains the regional accreditors. Who are mostly owned by one or 2 entities in the US now. And they are still pushing policies and practices to turn education into the political tool that John Dewey and his ideological successors have always dreamed about.
So you get charters through the school board and state legislature. There is now a legally binding agreement on the parents and taxpayers but the other side knows precisely what the accreditors are about to impose on the charters. And there will be no effective remedies.
Likewise with vouchers one side thinks it has a remedy and the other sees it as the most effective means to push private schools towards the dysfunctional policies and practices too. The accreditors have already bound the Catholic schools in California to operate consistent with their “vision.”
We have got to start looking better for the carefully crafted conflicts in public policy all existing on the taxpayers dollar. Otherwise we walk straight into carefully planned traps. With little recourse.
Oddest thing, for some reason people who think it’s wrong to demonize Mr. Zimmerman, excuse his actions by demonizing Mr. Martin. In short it’s alright to demonize, just make sure you do it to the “right” guy? Here’s an idea, two guys running around in the rain, at night, run into each other, and the misunderstandings escalate from there. Mr. Zimmerman doesn’t have to be a “crazed racist”, Mr. Martin doesn’t have to be a “black thug”. BTW, why would anyone take what’s said on some social site as gospel truth? The fact that you dislike the people on the other side of the issue, doesn’t make the people on your side of the issue saints – or them demons.
Yes, except that apparently 1) Martin may have been implicated in some of the burglaries in the area, 2) he was definitely under the influence of drugs (probably “lean”) at the time, 3) it was a little more than a misunderstanding, since from all the evidence Martin attacked Zimmerman first.
Martin didn’t have to be a “black thug”, yet a thug he turned out to be.
Dig into his past behavior.
The emphasis on Martin’s not-so-innocent character is a reaction to the media’s initial portrayal of him as a poor little adolescent who was just eating some Skittles in the rain when an evil racist snuffed out his life for no reason. Hop on over to some liberal blogs & see what they’re saying about Zimmerman.
But I agree with you on your main point: Neither of these people fits the narratives they’re being shoehorned into. No innocent black youth targeted by a racist vigilante. No well-meaning white man targeted by a violent black thug. Just two guys who encountered each other on a dark, rainy night – wrong place, wrong time, for both of them. I’m hoping that’s the story that comes out in the courtroom but I don’t imagine it will. Sadly, all we’ll get is duelling narratives.
I believe that much of the reaction to the Trayvon Martin case has to do with the inescapable fact that nobody knows what the hell happened and nobody really cares. This is particularly true on the Left. This is an election year and, let’s be honest, the race hustlers were eager for a case that could mobilize the African-american base in the terms that are most familiar – Victimization and “profiling.” Trayvon Martin’s death (and background) was something of a square peg that the media had to hammer away at in order to fit into a round hole. Yet they went ahead and did it for no other purpose than to generate racial rancor.
Lost in this tsunami of outrage was the unchallenged fact that about 90% of all homicides involving black victims also involve a black perpetrator. This should not be surprising since about 75% of all homicides are committed by someone that the victim already knows. But black-on-black crime has no “oomph” to it and doesn’t get out the vote.
In the Trayvon Martin case nothing matters but the story arc. The elite media and their political allies devised a pre-approved narrative that must be relentlessly pressed for the benefit of a few well-placed grievance mongers. What makes the entire situaiton even more surreal is that it is all so freaking transparent. Everyone knows what is going on but if you don’t swallow this flagrantly fraudulent narrative whole then you are automatically a racist.
Tom Wolfe described nearly all of this brilliantly in “The Bonfire of the Vanities.” More proof that life often imitates art.
Talk about how the MSM presents a twisted “narrative’’ to fit their Leftist ideology, check out this new analyses by Jack Cashill (http://www.americanthinker.com/2012/06/what_the_media_choose_not_to_know_about_trayvon.html) who actually looked at Treyvon Martin’s social media writings and accounts, and which argues that the emblematic, innocent sounding “Skittles and Sweet tea” that Martin bought at the 7-11 on the night he was shot were actually two of the three ingredients (the other was codeine or Robitussin) needed to make a local narcotic, high-inducing brew nicknamed “Lean,” “Sizzurp,” and “Purple Drank” that Martin had, according to his postings, drunk in the past, and wanted to try again.
Also in this article find the information that, while articles sometimes mention one of Treyvon’s three suspensions from school, this time because of a screwdriver and some ladies jewelry he couldn’t account for that were found in his backpack, this was reported in such a way as to give the impression that there were perhaps one or two pieces of jewelry, when the fact is that there were twelve–quite a different impression and the likely conclusion you might come to when its not one or two but twelve pieces of ladies jewelry Treyvon couldn’t account for.
This discussion of what will happen to the Libs leaves islam out of the equation and that is a huge mistake. Islam cannot be ignored and must be utterly isolated. The barbarians are at the gate, Dear Friends and are ignored at our peril.
……[That's exactly right.
But, not right here, right now.
You'd like Robert Spencer's "Jihad Watch"...it's just a few clicks away......]
Unsaid in all of these positions is the essential undeniable fact that we are created equal only under our man-made Law…..perhaps including inside the Solitude of the Voting Booth.
Not all of us can become Lawyers. Some may need help in pulling a lever, pushing a key, or even seeing the choices, or need to be wheeled up to the curtain to start.
We most certainly are not created equal in hereditary abilities, or in the way we use our common physical “givens” of arms, legs, brains, eyes and taste. Those physical qualities of running fast or not, golfing, using a keyboard, playing a sonata on the piano, or juggling tomatoes are most certainly not created equally and uniformly among any two of us, much less inside a particular ethnic group…itself a man-made “sociological” concept generated among academics of varying capabilities….then agreed upon by a consensus of peers…..who’re not endowed equally.
Why can’t we accept this obvious innate, inherent IN-equality amongst us?
Why do we politicize this “equality thing”?
We do this “politicizing everything” because in so doing we try to affect the outcome of elections, and establish the tenure of the likes of the Sharptons and the Jacksons and the Obamas because of a need to show we are not in fact…RRRRacist. And,obviously, many of us are not naturally endowed to be as canny and naturally successfully opportunistic as that particular triad….made in Nature.
This self-perpetuating-guilt-laden-idiocy is so very, very circular and cyclical…..this rhythm must be broken…somehow.
Charlie-
Much of the emphasis on equality is precisely because we are so different. Only state intervention can make unequal situations equal in outcome.
Plus in education the “ALL students” emphasis means that the school and coursework can no longer be academic in any meaningful sense apart from basic skills.
But do you know what every student has? Emotions. That becomes the emphasis and boy does history show us what can happen once a government gets unfettered access to this domain.
UNESCO is really pushing the emotional emphasis now in its Education for All and Millenium Development Goals. The US is following right along through all sorts of duplicitous means. Here’s a post where I described the Stealth social and emotional learning that is the essential component of these new Common Core “national standards.”
http://www.invisibleserfscollar.com/how-social-and-emotional-learning-as-the-primary-focus-is-coming-in-all-the-windows/
You won’t enjoy reading it but one or more of the methods I described is coming to your school and district. Unless it is already there as some parents are recognizing when I discuss PBIS.
Robin,
I read it, all of it, and think that it read positively Orwellian….or…North Korean, or Soviet era circa 1928-37 or so. Having been born in 1931, I’ve had the Public School Education of that time,in racially segregated Washington D.C. and went on to receive a BA in Economics in 1954. All previous to Brown vs. The Board of Education. So I’m dated.
Positively Jurassic, I guess; but confess I had trouble trying to follow this “new think” which, frankly, seemed a bit jagged to me as presented, and did not flow freely….but that’s probably just me.
The surprising emphases placed upon such ephemeral stuff as a child’s “emotional growth and/or needs” to be placed on top of the three R’s during class time in the course of a school day would seem to mean that a lot of substance from those R’s would have to omitted. My own ‘emotional and social’ growth or lack of it, was accomplished, or not, after school hours in the usual scruffy ways. Trial and error, lots of errors, gaffes, some successes…the usual flubs and pick-myself-up-again-and-dust-myself-off. How does one synthesize that into a classroom of children in an organized manner? Good grief. How does one write that into a Syllabus to be followed in a classroom? …full of fidgity children or adolescents?
Frankly, if I’d children in school right now I’d be horrified that such arcane “New Think” had been approved by the current crop of “educators”, and was indeed “coming in through the windows”, as the title indicated.
[Not to be snarky, but could you have meant "Windows" as in these computers? That's something else again.]
What’s happened to parents’ involvement in their kid’s school curricula and administrators? What’s happened to that old saw, “You cannot legislate social change”….has our dear, shallow Obama been lurking around faculty lounges?
Pray not. What an example of legislated “Affirmative Action” HE is.
Charlie- I tell a bit of the story of what is currently going on with each post. The windows reference was just a way of saying it’s not coming in where you can see it. But it will be in the foyer just the same.
The new 3 R’s are relationships, rigor, and relevance.
Don’t get excited about rigor. It means an open-ended, untaught problem hopefully relevant to real world needs. No fixed, single answer.
Relevance is the push to be concrete, not abstract. It also makes it more likely the student will relate emotionally, not cognitively.
It’s a tragic story but the only way to stop it is to tell it and I am trying my best. Read the earlier posts. You will see I am essentially writing a tale and laying a trap.
Robin,
We must agree to disagree. I’d disagree here more explicitly but our vocabularies are simply not the same.
My Three R’s are the traditional:
Reading, wRiting and aRithmetic.
And, when I read the “previous” of your link above, I smiled when I came across your,
“That’s the beauty of Orwellian Newspeak–the duplicitous use of language. It makes it a whole lot harder to detect the problem.”
I didn’t read any further.
Zap! Bingo! …that sums up my inability to see your viewpoint. My use of that same thought is so very different from yours.
Cheers….
And of course corruption like the current scandal in the L.A. County assessors office have nothing to do with the growing distrust of the “Good People” in government.
“All of Europe to some degree is democratic socialist, but some states–the PIGS, for example — are more so than others. So the current meltdown is a morality tale of those nations and regions that sought to stay fiscally responsible — say, Germany, Scandinavia, the Netherlands — and those that did not: France to some degree, and, of course, Greece, Ireland, Italy, Portugal, and Spain. Cite geography, Catholicism versus Protestantism, weather, geography, history — any cultural barometer you like — but the truth is that one workable paradigm reflects human nature, of spending only what you make, and the other does not.”
mere bias !
Germany before the euro crisis has more sovereign debt than France and than Spain, 83% vs 81%, 83% vs ~60% ….
This has nothing to do with religious preference protestantism vs catholiscism, then again Britain, or Netherlands sovereign debt would also be lower, say of the sapnish level !
Didn’t it occur to you that that were the 2007/2008 world money crisis that distabilised the financial system? whereas too leveraged world banks became the problem, that made that none trust one other, and thus stopped the liquidities needed in economies, especially those that had a deficit in trades balance with Germany. These weakened economies needed to devaluate to regain competitiveness, impossible by the EZ/ECB/Bundesbank rules, for good reasons, the EZ shared currency, hence weakened euro is but benefitful for the german exportation machine, hence foreign investors pour money in Germany at zero interest, hence the bank runs favorable to Germany… Merkel has no reason to solve a crisis that brings good money into Germany ! this isn’t german virtue, but german merchandizing calcul, and indifference to non german populations !
….you’re very, very angry and jealous because Dr Hanson’s essay (or, assay) here points out the deficiencies of established French Socialism. France is running out of “other peoples money”. The leveling and re-distribution of others’ wealth inside France and/or the Euro-zone is not self-sustaining.
I know it’s impossible, but put yourself in Angela’s place…..would you loan your hard earned cash to anyone, even a neighbor….. proven to have rapidly diminishing credit or little or no real assets as collateral….do you freely donate your cash to any/all who ask? …with no need of it ever being returned?…with interest?…to be re-invested and re-circulated elsewhere?
Are you a charity?
“you’re very, very angry and jealous because Dr Hanson’s essay (or, assay) here points out the deficiencies of established French Socialism. France is running out of “other peoples money”. The leveling and re-distribution of others’ wealth inside France and/or the Euro-zone is not self-sustaining”.
No, I’m just fed up of manipulative papers that are mere lies, our socialism isn’t worst than any social democraty or neo-liberal (european sense) government, just that some need to always put France, and now the latin club too as their metaphor of the worst that governments can do, I tell ya life over there is much better than in your country. There’s no american dream since decades anymore .

pff completly idiottish !
Germany has a expensionist policy through banks lending (so that one is tied with the “made in germany”) and a necessary Lebensraum for her merchendises, which the EZ is !
Are you a charity? BS !
check
“Let’s begin with the observation that irresponsible borrowers can’t exist without irresponsible lenders. Germany’s banks were Greece’s enablers. Thanks partly to lax regulation, German banks built up precarious exposures to Europe’s peripheral countries in the years before the crisis. By December 2009, according to the Bank for International Settlements, German banks had amassed claims of $704 billion on Greece, Ireland, Italy, Portugal and Spain, much more than the German banks’ aggregate capital. In other words, they lent more than they could afford”
“Hey, Germany you got a Bailout too”
http://www.bloomberg.com/news/2012-05-23/merkel-should-know-her-country-has-been-bailed-out-too.html
See the charitable Germany, she is insuring that we share her banks losses through ECB, but deny to any other EZ country the right to do the same
“…our socialism isn’t worst than any social democraty or neo-liberal (european sense) government, just that some need to always put France,…”
Your “socialism” is bad enough to need Obama to go to war against Libya, and also pay the costs. I guess France couldn’t care less that Obama had to borrow the money to do it.
“…I tell ya life over there is much better than in your country. There’s no american dream since decades anymore.”
“pff completly idiottish!” No one wants to live in France.
She appears on PJM to throw her asinine prattle around from time-to-time. Place her in “scroll-over” territory and carry on works for most of us.
oh a adept for freedom of speech !
are you just trolling?
Buckeye didn’t say you should be censored….. only ignored (scrolled over).
“Germany before the euro crisis has more sovereign debt”
The difference is that they also generate, through actual production, enough money to pay the interest on that debt – without asking for someone else to pay.
Similar to their social programs – if they want to spend a lot on social programs, that’s up to them as long as they can pay for them.
Mr. H did an exemplary job at sewing these events together in a cohesive and understandable day. The question is: Notwithstanding these facts and their consequences, how many ‘takers’ are out there who will mindlessly vote for those who represent and advertise themselves as the ‘givers’? Fiscal responsibility in America is the necessity of the present, and it MUST be effected primarily by a reduction in definable, relatively short term spending cuts. Governor Scott Walker has proved his mettle in this regard, we need the same type of mettle in our Nation’s Congress. November cannot come fast enough so that we can truly, in the words of POTUS’ never ending campaign effort…move forward. Semper Fi.
“hence weakened euro” –> hence weakened DM-euro”
“The liberal model — borrowing huge sums, rigging interest and the currency to enable state profligacy”
Economic models are not conservative or liberal. President Nixon Placed the USA on a petro dollar system in 1971, since that fateful day the US dollar has lost 90% of its value. This also allowed unlimited borrowing and issue of treasuries to float debt secured by U.S. Taxpayers.
The economic model President Nixon created provided borrowing capacity as never before seen. From that day democrat and republican congress spent like drunken sailors.
Interest rates are manipulated by the Federal Reserve, the structure of which boggles logic and reason, but they are not a political entity.
US pension funds are the next shoe to drop, they have been regularly raided in the last decade, the money used to invest in dubious mechanisms and derivatives, or to purchase insurance policies that pay the company not the employee.
The USA is on the precipice of serious depression, caused by inept leadership on both sides of the aisle.
Mr. Hanson in in need of no additional accolades – public or private – for his superlative literary skill (though, like the rest of us, he is human and he no doubt appreciates them when they are offered). Nobody Important, therefore, won’t pile on here, except to remind PJM readers that Mr. Hanson has not always been the worlds finest reference citer. In fact, while he may be PJM’s finest wordsmith, he has historically not been PJM’s finest reference citer either. Today, however, he clears both bars with room to spare. The essay he offers, and the references he provides to support his conclusions, are both first rate. Thank you again, Mr. Hanson.
Readers wishing to examine several dozen additional references not cited in Mr. Hanson’s tome today are invited, once again, to visit Another Slow News Day’s blog page devoted to Liberalism’s many “irreconcilable forces.”
http://anotherslownewsday.wordpress.com/liberalism/
Several hundred additional references, collated into sub-topics of Liberalism, are also available by traversing the branches of ASND’s Philosophy / Liberalism menu tree. Several thousand additional references, also collated into topics and sub-topics related to Liberalism, are available by browsing ASND’s other menu trees.
As usual, a well written and succinct discourse by an astute observer of the modern society. Dr Hanson has the ability to seemingly step away and look at our world from the outside, like a thinking man. I agree with his observations but I don’t see an implosion of the left anytime soon. It is true that their policies are demonstrably failing all over the planet. But as long as they continue to control the dialog in the classrooms, courthouses, and media outlets, they will point the finger of their failures at their political adversaries. Those would be you and I. We face a long battle ahead before the implosion of collectivist ideology will be complete. They will win many of these battles. But our renewed sense of hope is that the truth will finally reset us on the truly innovative path of liberty and self governance. We have to wage this fight or else humanity will inevitably return to the political dark ages. We cannot rejoice in the inevitable failure of collectivist ideology, we have to defeat it as if it were the personification of Satanic forces. The immediate fight is the removal of the Communist from our White House. ABO2012
“they continue to control the dialog in the classrooms, courthouses, and media outlets,”
That is the key! All long as the Left controls those institutions, it will require slogging through relentless enemy fire. We shall be called racists, sexists, corporatists, imperialists, Christian fascists, one percenters, right wing-nuts, teabaggers, rednecks and knuckle-draggers. Did you notice the non-stop screed on MSNBC during Wisconsin Recall night? The True Believers will always self-righteously show us that their “Ignorance is Strength.”
But we Bitter-Clingers must resist for at least another generation. We shall not convert the Left; we must eventually replace them.
Good piece. Similar to several of mine over at The Diplomad 2.0. The struggle we face is between taxpayers and voters, and between those of us who believe what we see and the liberals who see what they believe.
VDH, my only complaint,…..you do not write fast enough. You and Mark Steyn are the only writers that ever get forwarded to my friends and family.
Hear! Hear! Vaughn.
I too, send only VDH and Steyn along to friends and family.
It’s a long week of waiting for these patriotic wordsmiths.
Well, either that, or liberals are con artists, fully cognizant of the scam.
Call me cynical, but I’m going with the con artist theory.
I am interested why a lot of conservative political writers use the “it isn’t working, it was never going to work but we need this (fill in the blank)institution to be viable because there is an important function (fill in the explanatory paragraph) for it to fill” essay structure. For instance the United Nations is a club for kleptocrats who hate freedom BUT we still need a viable UN.
Or in this case the blue state model and the parties and interests that created them ruined high functioning states but there is a need for the Left to exist to balance the right.
The truth is that free people don’t need permanent parties. Free people associate according to their needs and ideas and can build up and tear down as necessary. I would hate to see a Tea Party around decades from now that exists just to give the children of the original organizers jobs. I could imagine a writer saying “the original conditions of the Tea Party are long past and it is now a patronage organization BUT we need a party whose job is to provide a check on government growth as a balance against the party that wants to expand government”.
Is it my imagination that political science is not mechanical engineering? The idea of counter forces is a metaphor not a way of keeping an engine from breaking apart.
MC: “too leveraged world banks became the problem, that made that none trust one other, and thus stopped the liquidities needed in economies, especially those that had a deficit in trades balance with Germany. These weakened economies needed to devaluate to regain competitiveness, ”
Think for a second. The BANKS were too leveraged, i.e., in debt with too much loaned out… so they could afford to buy German products… i.e., Bimmers & Mercedes, which they could not otherwise afford … so paying for the cars, with EUROS(!!!!) they now needed to devalue the EURO? That is circular logic.
Lend me money to buy a car, and then complain that I cannot devalue the currency to make it easier to repay you? NO. Get to work, earn some money, and repay your debt. You have the car, now pay for it.
I don’t give a fig if the banks become bankrupt. They bet, just like Gov Corzine, that the government would not let the PIIGS go toes up, and take the Euro with them. They bought the ‘government backed’ bonds that paid so well in order to get the good returns that made THEIR paychecks fat, and the bonuses so rich. Well, payback is unpleasant. May be they didn’t EARN those bonuses and pay checks, and should return same to their employer. May be the bondholders should give up some of their earnings. May be the banks will have to come to the reality the rest of us live with. Worthless bonds are good for starting fires, and keeping them on the balance sheets hoping for a miracle is fantasy. The banks are dancing on the precipice, holding hands, it appears. Either let go of each other, and hope for the best, or take the consequences of bad decisions. Reality is a bleep-bleep.
Speaking from ignorance, they deserve more than they will get. Some will retreat to villas in the South of France, others to balmy climates elsewhere. Few will get what they deserve.
tom
except that these countries aren’t bankrupted because they bought german cars, but because that can’t sell their own products that have become too expensive with a euro = from 1,25 to 1,50 dollar (even for the french products, it was ok when the euro = 1 dollar), they are priced in euros for a world dollars market, whereas concurrence is feroce among the productors that can rely on much lower cost labor forces, which has little influence for german tool machines and expensive cars, because of their uniqueness.
Whatever surgical tape our elites are trying to put on this unbalance, it will fail. The solution is that Germany leaves the EZ, it will cost less than if the whole currency system collapse.
Isn’t Germany able to sell BMWs because of the weak Euro? So if Germany left the Euro for a strong Deutschmark, wouldn’t her exports tank?
And wouldn’t the value of the Euro fall by half?
If a train can’t make it up a steep grade, conditions won’t improve by getting rid of the strongest engine – you have to cut loose the dragging caboose (Greece).
yes, a inflated euro in the southern club made that the german merchendises were lesser expensives than if they were sold for franc, peseta, lira, drachme, escudo currencies. The German surpluses won’t exist anymore or would be benin for the trades balances, because the DM would appreciate, even for non EZ markets the german products would be more difficult to sell then.
A good exemple, during the Bazooka bailing out of greece in May 2010 the euro rating went lower for 3 month, and precisely, during these 3 months the german exportations made a boom (as well the French’s) on the world markets, especially in the BRIKS.
So the euro crisis, by lowering the euro value is but helping Germany businesses
The Swiss had to freeze their Franc appreciation last year, because they couldn’t reach clients anymore
Excellent exegesis, again, Doctor Hanson.
Also–perhaps in a Goebbels-like way—there is a 2012 suicidal use of language: words have been so made PC as to become nihilistic.
What does it mean to label someone “special needs”?
We are ALL “special needs”, just as “We are all Keynesians”—which turned out to be a lie.
As far as the flagrant abuse of money, such as the stimulus spending, and other excessive government spending—
As below, so above.
If I work a day and create $100 worth of wheat, say, and consume $90 of it, at the end of the day I have a $10 pile of it, better known as savings. Multiply this by all the people in a country, but don’t ignore the living people who DON’T even produce anything, but consume someone ELSE’S product.
Well, the takers, epitomized by Obama, are the ultimate power brokers, in that they have stuck themselves between the producers of the savings, better known as profit, and are busy redirecting it to fellow NON-SAVERS!
In short, instead of a free market of people deciding where and how to invest THEIR “wheat”, BHO et al are usurping their rights.
The way a free capitalistic society SHOULD work is by the investment market freely allocating free capital to its best risk-reward uses. Instead, we now have about the best misallocation of capital possible.
Think of Obama and his pals as the equivalent of the Islamists. Our own homegrown inner enemy!
Just as a bin Laden USED western weaponry, to destroy the west, Obama is using American “furnaces” to burn American money—
And, he’s doing a fine job of it.
As I’ve long said, he is the Shiva the Destroyer aspect of reality, circa 2012.
I think real Reality, in physical terms, is starting to “pinch” most people’s awareness, so that humanity is getting a lesson in the create-sustain-destroy nature of Nature. And, that there are those in the destroy camp, who have been in charge for too long, and there are those in the sustain and EVEN create camp, who must get back into charge.
It’s all about balance. Too much “destroy” will overwhelm the other aspects, and here we come, the end of the American “empire”, or what’s better known as Western Civilization.
Indeed, bye bye civilization, itself.
Do we really want to return to the Dark Ages?
Maybe.
Fair disclosure: I stopped liking California when a manaager at a supermarket said that my US passport wasn’t adequate identification. The US passport is a valid form of identification all over the world, but not California?
One word:
Detroitafornia
I was once requested to submit my passport for employment verification.
But, I can vote in many states without any I.D., and several times in the same election if I put in the travel time.
What does that tell you?
Neither Al Gore nor Barack Obama had a record of bringing peace to anyone.
Neither did Yassar Arafat.
Excellent article. I’m generally an optimist regarding the long view. But the weird distortions liberalism has introduced into American society over the last fifty years might be harder to get rid of than merely flushing Obama et al out this November. For my money the apotheosis of liberal insanity has to be DOJ’s ongoing efforts to stymie Florida’s purging dead people and illegals from its voting rolls. But I could be wrong about this being the most egregious example.
The bottom line for the sane people of this country is that Obama and crew are dangerous people. Their scam all along has been a soft coup takeover. Their actions have been indicative of the kind of people that in other countries get into power and never leave.
Thanks for this essay, and students of economic history agree that we are approaching the end of Marx’s legacy. Most of Europe, Japan and the US have unpayable, rapidly rising debt. In the US, that debt extends from the personal through the state and federal government. For 100 years, increasingly since LBJ’s programs, the dollar has been losing its value. If you read foreign economic news, you see the end of the dollar approaching, as countries trying to maintain stable currencies are now abandoning it. The US economy will collapse when the Treasury cannot find enough bond buyers, or China/Japan dump their Treasuries, (or both), and the Fed begins the end game, buying the debt (It bought 64% last year). That is why the Pentagon recently said our debt is our greatest threat.
It’s a very old, oft-repeated pattern that economic historians have studied since Adam Smith. This economic death is the end of ‘liberalism’, which is Orwellian news-speak for Utopianism’s collectivist, elitist-controlled state. What follows is not yet determined.
It’s not a supernova, it’s a white dwarf. And it is a great mistake to think that balance in government is provided by the balance of left and right. Madison conceived of ambition pitted against ambition, not sewage against water, which is more sewage.
“A bad cause seldom fails to betray itself.” Madison made this observation in Federalist Paper No. 41, and our leftist zealots seem intent on making this perfectly clear 225 years later. Their “bad cause” I believe, is the pursuit of vast wealth. How is this accomplished? By their demagogic pursuit of power. The zealous left has realized the error of Willie Sutton’s observation that he robs banks because banks are where the money is. Not all the money.
GOVERNMENT is where most of the money can be located, the zealous left has learned, and those who control government control the keycard to vast riches.
This is — call it what you will — what state capitalism, crony capitalism, guaranteed capitalism is all about, as Madison pointed out in Federalist Papedr No. 57: the “ambitious sacrifice of the many, to the aggrandizement of the few.” The zealous left has no use for a free market, which allows for voluntary choice by consumers. Where there is voluntary choice, there is no certainty of vast profits. Where, however, choice is eliminated with money disbursed by government officials deriving from from involuntary payments, a/k/a taxes, that is where one finds guaranteed wealth.
The Obama-istas are neither socialists nor communists. They are simply plundering plutocrats, using their power to sack the public trough. And, as a 19th century plutocrat famously remarked: “the public be damned.”
The astronomical increase in the federal budget is the root of the country’s problems. 3 TRILLION dollars at the disposal of a few dozen individuals. 99% of humanity simply cannot resist, and the most accomplished liars and psychopaths inevitably rise to the top if the cesspool of crime. Pelosi, Reid, obama, Franks…need I say more. ALL of the people who would have been criminal masterminds 100 years ago, scheming how to rob banks and trains, are now lifetime politicians.
And why not? What gets penalized? How many go to jail? and of the few that do, when they get out, they can go right back to their life of crime. Marion Barry. You can’t make this shit up. One day obama’s real life story will be written. I expect that the most cynical of us will be flabergasted.
The core solution is clear. Thieves will never diappear, but the less they have to steal, the less danger they present to society. I don’t imagine for a second that if the federal govrnment is dismantled to the level it should be (national defense, the justice system, a small cadre of foreign service), that the problems will go away. The thieves will simply migrate to the state governments. But when they only have billions instead of trillions to misuse and appropriate for themselves, the country will be enormously better off.
It really is about the size of goverment. Marxism just so happens to be the favorite tool in our masterminds’ buglar kits.
Here is the past 6 years of US deficits. I include the final two years of the GWB presidency in the lineup, even though President Obama was still a senator. But as a senator he was part of the Democratic majority which wrote the spending bills of 2007 and 2008.
According to the US Treasury web site, “Treasury Debt to the penny” this is what was borrowed in the past 6 years to cover deficit spending:
Year Ending_____________ $ Annual deficit
December 31, 2007_________ 548.9 Billion
December 31, 2008_______ 1,470.6 Trillion
December 31, 2009________ 1,611.5 Trillion
December 31, 2010________ 1,713.8 Trillion
December 30, 2011________ 1,197.7 Trillion
Jan to May, 2012 ______ _____547.7 Billion
Deficit total: 2007 to present____$7.090 ‘Trillion
That’s a lot of cash. Where did it go?
“But no matter, in postmodern thinking there are no facts, just competing discourses.”
No doubt. It is only the story that counts. And ultimately it is the people who accept it, who believe it whatever its merits or lack of facts, and who regurgitate it mindlessly. At the end of the day, the question is whether it is WE that have changed beyond the point of no return. If so, nothing except complete collapse will make for meaningful change. If not, we still have a chance.
The Left wants conflagration, and confrontation, which is so old-school.
Actually what will happen is that when they need help individually or as a groups, they will discover they get none.
Perhaps, in the future, the majority will leave Lefties where they find them, but in the near term we will see ostracism of a sort.
The pity, self-pity the Left markets will be done, and they with it: how many of you would put in a call to 911 for any of them?
I love your conclusion. Yea, “All the old shiny chrome is rusted and crumpled…” Why? Liberals try to remake theinsitutions they take over into their own image, making everything partisan, corrupt and, worst of all, ineffective.
“Pride goeth before destruction and an haughty spirit before a fall.” Kind of sums up Martin, Warren, the liberal mindset and all of humanity. That non- politically-correct Bible, such an outdated, irrelevant piece of antiquity, who needs to read that. BTW, The Walking Dead, season three, begins July 8, but we have had The Democrat Dead for the last fifty seasons, I think the Alinsky Apocalypse is upon us. Time to look, lock and load, metaphorically speaking, of course.(not)
I don’t see the left going away. The leftward course will continue. Too many of our institutions, not just politicians, are far left. The Schools and colleges will still be staffed by professors with far left ideas. I see no chance the media and enetertainment will stop being dominated by leftests. Even so called “conservative” politicians will comprise their values to get elected or to “get allong” The leftward train has been heading to lead us off a cliff for years now. The only thing happening is the train is slowing down a bit, but still moving left off that cliff. Sorry if I sound cynical!
Reading Hanson’s piece, it occurred to me that, ironically, the best case for the evolutionary inferiority of the White European civilization may the triumph of liberalism itself. Hanson’s essay is a catalogue of the ways that various intellectual virtues of the Enlightenment–tolerance, a spirit of skepticism about one’s own culture and tradition, an openness and curiosity about the “other,” optimism about the ability of abstract education to transform humans, the willingness to assume that “all men are created equal,” free trade, and a reverence for nature– have each, in their own way, led to policies that undermine profoundly the very societies founded upon such ideals. The Chinese have evolved an intellectual culture that was the equal or better of Western European culture by 1300. In the 1960s, we were all Whig Historians, and assumed that Chinese civilization’s closed, inward nature put it at a fatal historical disadvantage. Now, are Western historians quite so convinced about that judgement?
An even better analogy for Politically Correct Progressives (there is nothing “liberal” about their doctrine) is kudzu. Kudzu is the “vine that ate the South.”
Once it was planted by well-meaning erosion control experts, the kudzu vine exploded. It found the environment in the South perfect. It thrived everywhere. Drive through the South today, and you’ll see kudzu engulfing entire houses, barns, treelines, forests, roadsides.
You can cut it down, dig it up, burn it, and it comes back. A massive effort of constant vigilance and violent destruction will be required to eliminate kudzu.
So, too, has PC-Progressivism engulfed our culture. PC-Progs found our culture a welcome environment, and the anti-American cult thrives and spreads, safely ensconced in the transmission belts of our culture: media, academia/education, and Hollywood.
And, just like kudzu, it will take a massive, concerted eradication effort to rid our culture of PC-Progressivism. There hasn’t been a supernova. PC-Progs will spring back, like trimmed kudzu, stronger than ever, in a new location.
“Yet the hard-Left takeover of the Democratic Party has meant that there is no longer a credible balance in our system,”
The big-government takeover of the Republican Party has done similar. Endless unconstitutional wars, calling preemptive war “defense,” touting “states rights” while at the same time cheering for the distortion of the Commerce Clause so drugs they don’t like can be federally banned, pushing budget plans that always increase spending and that don’t balance the deficit for literally 30 years, indefinite detention without transparency or due process, murdering innocent people if they happen to be standing next to a “possible” terrorist, no-knock-warrant police raids in the middle of the night, etc etc etc.
There is no balance in the system anymore, that is for sure. But it’s not just Democrats feeding the ever-increasing beast of Big Government.
Someone let me know when the “small-government” “fiscally conservative” Republican Party can do even the basic task of passing a budget that doesn’t increase spending.
True that big gov repubs are still a problem. But at least with the advent of the Tea Party, there is finally a real movement to combat them, while the dem party is entirely corrupt, with no counteracting movement for fiscal sanity. I am not relying on the repubs for fiscal sanity, but on the Tea Party, and at least for now the big gov repubs are in real fear of the Tea Party.
Richard, you are so right. Not all republicans are Tea party, but it is the Tea party that truly cares enough to try and make this economy work again.
There are two bedeviling facts to socialism vs. freedom:
1) Socialism doesn’t work, never has, never will and; it runs counter to human nature.
2 Socialism is so easy to sell that it’s seemingly impossible to stop, cuz receiving other people’s money is always warmly embraced by the recipient.
Posters make a good point that leftism is not dead yet, and eternal vigilance is necessary. But we should at least take confort that, unlike 2008, they are finally on the run, and conservatism/libertarianism has a good chance to make real progress.
Yes, libtards are on the “run” but we must remember that it’s Romney that will be in the White House. He is a brilliant manager and a complete, though very convincing, phony. Reagan/Bush/Bush blunted the rise of the “me” generation’s brand of socialism but it will take a hyper vigilant Tea party (or the like) to keep socialism at bay until the torch is giving to the next generation. It won’t be the “me” generation but the “Why me?” generation.
Unfortunately for the masses if the media doesn’t mention it, it never happened. I can fully understand how the esteemed most honorable decision makers at Harvard accepted Ms. Warren’s claim of Native American blood, considering the fact that every time they tasked her with completing something worthwhile and meaningful, she raised her hand and replied, “How”!
The 10 Virgins.
Ok, going biblical on you. The story of the 10 Virgins, 5 of who were prepared for Jesus return, and the 5 who were not. The 5 that were DID NOT give theirs to the 5 that were not prepared. But they did give them the advice to go buy oil, get prepared..
We cannot help those out that do not do what is needed. or we will all be equally poor.
California state revenues are dropping at a 13% rate over the last nine months. Sales tax revenues May 2011 to May 2012 are -24%. No esoteric studies or polemics need be used to show the decline of California for the people themselves doing that job.
I stopped reading at “the hard left takeover of the Democratic Party”. Anyone that delusional cannot be taken seriously.
Pray tell, what do you consider Obama and his Chicago thug minions and puppet master Soros? The mainstream middle-of-the road? Just like the national media is not overwhelmingly socialist/far left liberal? I don’t even blame Obama for wrecking the country despite his oath. A pox on all the idiots who voted for this abomination and continue to worship a false god.
This simple. Milton Friedman was right and Keynes was wrong. The burden of a government can be measured by its spending as a percentage of GDP.
Bumping up government spending does not help the economy, it hurts the economy. The reasons are simple:
1) Every dollar the government spends must be first extracted from the private sector.
2) Therefore ever time the government increases spending the private sector expects higher taxes and interest rates as a result.
3) Therefore every increase in government spending or “stimulus” is offset by an equal or greater reduction in the propensity to invest on the part of the private sector.
In other words, all government spending is destructive. Some government spending (like on the national highway system) has benefits that outweigh the destruction. But everything that Obama has done fails this test and therefore Obama fails the test of being worth of re-election.
Socialists in Europe and North America are burning the house down with the occupants still inside it. They believe through burning down the house they are creating jobs for the the unioninzed carpenters and fire fighters.
The void and bankruptcy of liberalism is on display, in this fourth year of our “messiah’s” new era.
In economic language, we can look at this as either a bubble about to burst or a pyramid scheme.
The Welfare State, we now learn, was not self-financing, but rather was built upon debt, taxes on the unborn. A massive intergenerational transfer of our descendants’ wealth in order to fund Transgender Studies and SNAP. The future poor (and they will not be in shortage), will have neither Transgender Studies nor SNAP. They will have chaos and Greek-like governance, especially when the parasitical classes are able to outvote the taxpaying class. There is nothing moral about liberalism; liberalism is theft, theft from children.
Well, said, Chris!
This guy is sickening! He is supposed to be a professor and he has so much hatred for the poor murder victim Trayvon Martin? This kid is dead for three months but that does not stop this learned professor from bad-mouthing a dead kid. Evidently, death is not enough so what else would Trayvon had to do to escape this professor’s hatred?
I say this guy (I understand he is a scolar of ancient Greek civilization)is not fit to be in polite, civilized society. His attitude towards Trayvon Martin betrays his real agenda and nullifies everything else he says in this column.
Note to the author: Civilized people do show respect to the dead.
@NRO: It is not the dead Trayvon Martin that Professor Hanson is disrespecting. It is the one that was alive and now just happens to be dead, mostly through his own fault. Your argument is a smoke screen, trying to shut down the debate. Just because somebody is dead doesn’t mean that they are automatically entitled to our respect. We can pray for that person, but that doesn’t mean that their memory is automatically hallowed or we have to pretend that they were a wonderful, innocent person while living. If he behaved badly while he was alive is completely irrelevant to the fact that he is now dead. We can feel sorry for him. We can sympathize with his grieving parents and yet still be angry at him for behaving foolishly while alive, and be angry with his parents for not providing a better home life for him to grow up in.
It just so happens that the good professor is not the one who made young Trayvon a cause celebre. A quite dead Trayvon Martin became just such long before professor Hanson got to him. Their is no disrespect for either Trayvon Martin or George Zimmerman that I can tell within his piece. What he simply says here-in is that both became pawns for the sake of a Liberal narrative that, when exposed, proves just how willing the liberals who infused that same narrative; attempted to pound a square peg into their neat little round hole. Have you ever heard the term “white Hispanic?” I hadn’t heard of it until this case: and I’m a half and half also! What rubbish: and all for the sake of their world view.
The problem is Romney is a big government republican. Don’t get me wrong, he is Infinity better than an all powerful government statist like Obama. Its just that I don’t think his is going to be bold enough to put American back on the right track. We will have to hold his feet to the fire
Victor Davis Hanson does it again! Outstanding post!!!
As far as I can tell, the two parties still work to check each other. They provide the alternative step right or left, depending on which way the wind is blowing. If we really are very close to the falls, over which our ship of state will slide and be crushed at the bottom, then neither party is likely to be able to stop that movement, but if things are about as screwed up as they always are, just with different manifestations, we can give the tiller to Romney and let him steer to the center right. Liberals think that global warming is going to kill us, while righties think that small c communists are going to be the death of us. In my case, I hope that it is old age.
The “truth” is that we are likely to middle/muddle through, but that is so boring that it will not sell the product, and the mad men know that you have to sell the product. Give us some drama, please. The “truth” is far too complicated and pedestrian…and usually subject to forces beyond our puny means of analysis.
VDH lines out the liberal excesses smoothly, but does not come to grips with the general truth that the more “needy/challenged” people which a society permits to survive, first with great medical technology, then with all sort of care, therapy, welfare, special classes etc. and people who all have jobs providing these services is necessarily going to head where we are heading. How do we turn that ship?
High D. Nice day, huh?
“How do we turn that ship?”
With someone at the helm rather than at the 9th hole with another Lady Gagaist Clooneyism. Trying to be so cool.
And the riot squad they’re restless..
Actually if I saw Elizabeth Warren and Trayvon Martin at a gay-wedding reception I would find T much less threatening than Warren. At least to my good humor.
No wonder the Left wants us to be non-judgemental! They don’t want kids to learn the habit of disbelieving liars.
Back to the first topic: the Democratic Party. Here’s an analysis from a different angle: http://www.bayshoreteaparty.org/btpg-blog/2012/5/17/the-death-of-a-great-party.html
I did indeed slog through this piece of whining elitist claptrap. Like so many right wing so- called intellectuals, he who is actually a product of the liberal societies he now decries gets his rocks off by torching the very ideas that made a creature like him possible! And as for his take on the Trayvon Martin / Fauxchahontas stories, it was in fact the MEDIA that exposed Warren and Martin! But this Dick head seems to think he is the only one with Real Clear Vision.
Hogwash. Figures he would be a classics scholar and loves to write about war from his arm chair at the Hoover institute. And yet we have so much in common – both born in 1953, both grew up on a 40 acre tree farm. (albeit mine was near Detroit; i will bet this jack-ass has never even been to Detroit). Main difference is I am not a whining elitist longing for the days of Caesar and needing to throw in allusions to Greek mythology to show off my erudition.
His usual level of greatness, but poor quality editing this time around.

you do have a great blog here! if you’d like to have the invite posts on my blog?
The left does what it does because there are no media consequences. They think of themselves as little Obamas. Living in a cocoon of people who are equally ill-read, uneducated, and bereft of reality, but who control the purse strings and ethos of the nation. They know what the know and care for little else. They worry what they think is a consensus worry. They go to movies that their friends go. They repeat the same things over and over again as if they were deep thinkers. I think of Andrea Mitchell and Soledad Obrien hen i write this. How can people who are so stupid, lacking any sense of educational foundation, assume that they are actually clever and insightful? It is beyond comprehension.
