In ancient Rome, when the emperor or an especially distasteful elite died, his image on stone and in bronze was removed. And by decree there arose a damnatio memoriae, a holistic effort to erase away his entire prior existence. When Tiberius got through with the dead Sejanus, few knew that he had ever existed, such were the powers of the Roman state to create alternate realities. Orwell’s Animal Farm and 1984 explored the communist state’s efforts to airbrush away history. Orwell perhaps was most notably influenced by the removal of Leon Trotsky from the collective Russian memory to the point that he never existed. That force was used in these instances does not mean that something like them could not happen through collective volition; indeed, I think we are starting to see dangerous signs that a sort of groupthink is already beginning.
That Was Then, But This Is What . . . ?
In our own time there are certain growing trends, most of them media-induced, that conspire to rework our collective memory, in pursuit of a supposedly noble and just cause. In the fashion of no other recent figure, President Barack Obama has brought those forces of establishing an official truth to the fore. Last week he lectured the media that things are not just equal with two sides to a story. Instead, they have a responsibility not to fall into the trap of equivalence — the subtext being that he is not subject to the same laws of inquiry as are his earthly opponents.
Suddenly, the Supreme Court is a suspicious organization run by unelected politicos that uses capricious judicial fiat to overturn widely popular laws. The president denigrated it in a State of the Union address and now suggests that such “unelected” jurists (as opposed to electing them?) should act responsibly and thus “must” not find a popularly enacted law unconstitutional.
I am confused: I thought we were supposed to welcome such judicial audit. Was not that the charm of the Warren Court? Did not the Obama administration go to federal court to ask justices to set aside the Defense of Marriage Act that it was entrusted to enforce — seeking judicial help not to follow a law that it chose not to seek to overturn in Congress?
I also thought that a younger Barack Obama once had regretted that the Supreme Court had never addressed “redistributive change” and, per the U.S. Constitution, had confined itself only to defining negative liberties rather than demanding positive “rights” that legislatures were supposed to ensure — or else. And did ObamaCare really pass with broad majorities? I thought that it received no Republican votes in the House and only squeaked by. And it would have been filibustered in the Senate without the Ted Stevens pseudo-scandal and various sweetheart deals to swing senators. Or is that now inaccurate?
Good Little Citizens?
Is public campaign financing good or bad? I thought Obama in 2008 was the first presidential nominee since the law’s inception to have ignored it. But did anyone so note that? What happened to this once hallowed liberal reform? Was it not aimed at stopping the BPs and Goldman Sachses of the world from warping the election process with huge infusions of cash — as in the $1 billion range?
Are the one-percenters suspect and avoiding their fair share, or are they the most generous donors to the Obama campaign? Sometimes one feels bewildered in this now alternative universe: in the evil Bush year 2007, I remember that recess appointments were always to be seen as illegitimate, while filibusters were critical checks on abusive Republican legislative majorities. But then by 2011, the former was now a principled mechanism to sidestep reactionary obstructionism and the latter nihilistic ways of halting needed liberal progress. What happened, or have we lost all ability to remember?
The World Made Anew in 2009
I need to go to a re-education, or perhaps a re-memorization, camp. What happened to “unpatriotic” presidents running up $4 trillion in debt in eight years, or is trumping that in three then patriotic? Was the presidentially appointed Simpson-Bowles commission the proper bipartisan way to address deficits, or were its findings coopted by the one-percenters? In December 2010, I thought suddenly raising taxes was supposedly the wrong thing to do in tough times. Was it not by March 2011?
When did the Catholic Church declare war on women, and at what point in history did condoms or birth control pills became oppressive expenses in need of federal subsidies in a way that, say, iPhones were not? Does the crude smear “slut” by media figures threaten the world of our children or help to raise money to donate to presidential campaigns? What words, what images, what references are taboo, and what are tolerable — and why? Did the president deprecate the working classes of Pennsylvania and Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu, and did he make vague promises to the Russians off mic — or were those just products of our imagination?
At what point did borrowing against our children’s futures become needed “stimulus” and “investments”? Is keeping the federal budget far larger than it was during the Bush years “social Darwinism,” a term that is acceptable political invective in a way “socialism” is not? Where did the adverb “unexpectedly” come from, as in almost all economic news now is “unexpectedly” something: “unexpectedly” high unemployment figures or “unexpectedly” sluggish home sales?
Did unemployment ever really go over 8 percent? I thought that it had and is so now. I remember being told that high gas prices analogous to Europe’s, skyrocketing energy costs, and putting federal oil leases off limits (up to the point of risking $10 a gallon gas) were all our common aspirations to cool the planet, to cut fossil fuel use, and to transition energy management from the oil companies to the more caring government. But now I am told all that was never so: the private sector is to be praised for producing more gas and oil on private lands than ever before; high gas prices are bad; and we certainly don’t want energy costs to skyrocket. But will the 2012 truth soon revert to that of 2000-2011?
Try Harder . . .
Sometimes we try hard, but cannot quite get straight the party communiqués. Supply and demand are irrelevant to gas pricing, we are told, in this age of energy speculation and rising Middle East tensions that warp the market. But why then do we ask the Saudis to put more oil into the global pot and ponder doing the same from our strategic reserve? Is there something called supply and demand at work, as in increasing global supply to lower prices, or at least to suggest there is more supply coming on line? Is Saudi oil and previously pumped oil of better quality than newly pumped oil?
Wind and solar will create “millions of new green jobs.” But when and how so? Government subsidies to insider green companies like Solyndra are to be deemed good, even if they produce little energy; but normal tax breaks for the oil companies are bad when they fuel the entire country. Are there solar panels on Air Force One? Is there a rule that says Solyndra cannot make what Exxon rakes in?
We are supposed to believe that Republicans in the House have done terrible things in stopping the president’s agenda. But I thought that after 2008 there were Democratic majorities in Congress that could do whatever the Democratic president wished? What was not done in 2009 is understandable, but not understandable in 2011?
The masses are told that they will like the new federal takeover of health care. But those who like it the most are to be rewarded for their fealty by being granted exemptions from it? If we write favorably on its behalf, can we too then become exempt from it?
Constitutional Crimes
I still don’t know what Guantanamo, renditions, tribunals, preventative detention, and the Patriot Act are. One day I heard that they were all both unnecessary and unconstitutional, and then I woke up a bit later and discovered that all were both critical and lawful. When did that happen? At the time when Iraq went from the “worst” (fill in the blanks) to the administration’s “greatest” achievement? When did assassinating Predators go from airborne terror to jokes about some day shooing away suitors from the presidential daughters?
I am still trying to figure out what the one-percenters are. I think they are wealthy people — but not the very wealthy people. Or are they the very wealthy people who accept that higher taxes can either be avoided or won’t substantively affect their sizable portfolios, or feel that they provide necessary psychological inoculation for their mostly segregated and elite lifestyles?
Those who run Apple, Microsoft, Google, and Amazon, or those who manage Goldman Sachs, or those who make $20 million a year in Hollywood, or those who administer Harvard and Yale or the Ford and Rockefeller Foundations have always paid their fair share, and thus are not to be fairly dubbed corporate jet owners? Or is it that these very rich, but not to be demonized one-percenters, accept that the 50%-plus of their income given in state and federal taxes was not previously enough, and so they now feel that they must up that amount and thus must pay 50% of the nation’s aggregate federal income tax revenue rather than just the paltry present 37%? Is that the truth? In other words, the good one-percenters de facto agree that they have previously in the Bush years cheated the Treasury under the present income tax code, and really did feel guilty that they had not voluntarily contributed more, but now they agree with Obama that they should be forced to pay more taxes?
I am further confused: did Bill Gates’ extravagant mansion rob the rest of us (how many of us paid too much for Microsoft Word to pay for his indulgent investment?). Does Warren Buffett’s jet mean that the rest of us have less jet fuel as we sit cramped back in the tail section? Why does James Cameron get his own submarine to explore the ocean; could he not instead have cut the ticket price to his movies? Can we all go to Costa del Sol or Martha’s Vineyard; how many cruise missiles paid for that? What are the criteria that suggest some of the above is corporate jet-setting and some is not, when do pigs walk on four and when on two legs?
But this alternate reality is not just political, but also social. This week I read in local papers of a supposed flight from the San Joaquin Valley by the more affluent, either out of state or to the other California that is the coastal corridor from San Francisco to San Diego. The interior we are told is emptying out, keeping unemployment high and housing prices low. But the wire services also assured us that our net population did not dip, given the role of “international arrivals.” So was there an influx from Switzerland or Kenya into California that I was not aware of? Are we back to “overseas contingency operations” and “man-caused disasters”?’ Did Major Hasan lose it in a workplace rage?
In the tragic Trayvon Martin case almost everything that I saw or read for nearly two weeks seemed to me not quite true. As the days wore on, why did the narrative keep changing? Trayvon was not any longer the slight, preteen in a football uniform as his most widely disseminated photo suggested; that information matters as much or as little as information that George Zimmerman had a prior run-in or two with the authorities. Martin was not outweighed by his shooter by 100 pounds. He was not a model student; and George Zimmerman probably did not run him down in efforts to execute him. Zimmerman probably did not utter a racial epithet. To the extent that he sounded insensitive, it was largely due to a doctored NBC tape (NBC said that it was an inadvertent error but why did it err to bolster rather than weaken the media narrative? [fake but accurate?]). Zimmerman really did suffer a head injury. The latter was half-Hispanic; but the original white-on-black crime narrative was nevertheless somewhat salvaged with the new rubric “white Hispanic.” I used to think that the idea of re-arresting someone when probable cause is still in doubt was not a compromise solution to finding out the facts.
Putting a bounty on someone’s head is not a crime? Posting a private address to followers for the intent to foment violence against the residents is not either? Nor is doctoring a tape to inflame racial tensions in a period of unrest a terrible thing to do. For congressional representatives to label someone not charged with a crime an assassin or executioner is not considered bad taste and draws little rebuke.
These are the narratives that for purposes of social justice now become reality, but tomorrow, next week, next month, next year?
Who knows? “Truth,” after all, is not the Socratic absolute, but a socially constructed commodity, defined by power and predicated on race, class, and gender, concerns that can be made to serve the greater good, if adjudicated by — well, again, fill in the blanks.

I don’t think anyone here is denying that Orwell was in theory a Socialist, but his writings show he had deep reservations about what Socialism becomes in the hands of its practitioners. Orwell’s essays and novels vividly illustrate the dangers of totalitarianism, whether of the Right or the Left. His experiences in Spain during the Spanish Civil War showed him that Communism is first cousin to Fascism; both rely on totalitarianism to control the masses and both abrogate the truth to further their ends and maintain dominance over others. His writings endure precisely because they are relevant to both sides of the political spectrum.

“Truthiness” was a ‘word’ coined by Comedy Central’s Stephen Colbert as way of denegrating then President Bush. True to form, in the Left’s way of habitually projecting their own neuroses on the masses they pretend to be superior to, this term perfectly describes their own understanding of what the Right recognizes as facts. Hence the 20-year debate between correctness and Political-correctness…often 180 degrees of separation between the two.

When corporate institutions such as Gooogle, Microsoft, Apple, goldman Sacks or British Petroleum make donations of millions to Barry Davis campaign, they submit to an extortion racket, their contributions bypass the public till of taxation, because the gummit in power wants its fair share of its piece of the action. I am rapidly losing faith in my fellow citizens. I am losing faith because so many seem not to realize that along with the benefits of citizenship, come some responsibilities. And the primary responsibility, yes duty and obligation, is to stay informed to some minimum level, IF FOR NO OTHER REASON, than to make the power hungry elitists have to at least work a little at stealing their freedom. What infuriates me about Dr Hanson’s litany is that these bastards don’t even have to try hard to steal the country. Hell, they’re putting about as much effort into it as Obama has put into anything he’s done in his life – which is nothing more than showing up and conning everyone, albeit in a clean, articulate, white sounding dialect.
This country is sleepwalking into serfdom. And that is despicable.
The key word here is “groupthink.” So many of the younger set especially are so easily swayed by the Sesame Street hypnosis of Obama and his lackey media pals. It is really quite disturbing to see the stupidity and undiscerning nature of such simple minds. Yet, argue with them at your peril, because if you try to introduce a thought outside of what “everyone thinks is really cool” you will be confronted with a bitter tantrum normally reserved for a parent who turns off the television and makes them eat their liver and peas. I frequently ask myself how so many were swayed to herd millions onto cattle cars headed for Treblinka, and yet now I believe I can see it.
The thing is, modern liberalism is the easy road. Full of hopes of clean air, clean water, endless lush forests packed with an abundance of every species, all in a land where the old, poor, infirm, and even those who just plain feel like they should be doing something BESIDES working are cared for by a beneficent government, where money never runs out, and where all colors and creeds have a deep and abiding understanding and tolerance for all others.
Liberalism promises all these things. It’s hard, especially for the young, to deny the charm of such ideas, and harder still to see that while modern liberalism promises all of this, it has no realistic plan for getting us there. Instead, promises are made with the full knowledge that they are unsustainable. Loans are given to develop industry for which there is no demand, in the hope that a market will magically materialize. Lavish pensions, retirement benefits, and health coverage can be promised to the masses. Who needs a realistic plan to pay for these things, when the promised goods buy the voters (who tend not to think that deeply about these matters)?
The brilliance of modern liberalism, is that they have (without ever putting it in words), latched onto the notion that folks vote their pocketbooks. You promise a voter government subsidized health care, endlessly extended unemployment benefits, etc. etc.. . .well, you don’t HAVE to have a plan. After all, you’ll be out of office by the time the nation’s economy is irreparably destroyed.
Of course, those days are coming to an end. But even when they do, it will only be a temporary respite. We, the masses, forget. We will forget how their policies led us to fiscal ruin. We will again look favorably on candidates who promise us wealth while simultaneously wrecking the engine of wealth.
It’s lamentable, but ever has it been that way in free societies.

The Pope said something similar during his Easter vigil on Friday. He said that “darkness threatens mankind” because we are losing our ability to discern truth from lies and good from evil, at a time when dangerous technologies are spreading. Of course this has been the not-so-secret goal of the Left for decades: to sow division and resentment and chaos, in order to pave the way for their world collectvist revolution. A monster of sorts is seeking to birth itself; and there are only a few (tens of millions!) of us who see it, and are prepared to stand against it.
I like those odds! We have a powerful weapon on our side too. It is called “good”. The universe has been moving from chaos towards order, complexity and harmony since the begining. Those who seek to reverse this process have already lost, for they are standing in opposition to the order of things. (In fact they are the fodder of history!) Though they can be destructive, their victories are always short-lived, and only serve to galvanize those of us who have chosen life. There is darkness ahead, no denying it. But on the other side is beautiful light. All that’s left then is to steel ourselves for the tribulations ahead, remember what we know to be true, and good; and resolve to make it through to the other side.

The thing to remember about these contradictions is that, in logic, if two contradictory statements are taken as axioms, then any sentence can be proven true. (Proof: Assume that sentence S is proven false (ie, not S is proven true) based on axiom A. Then there exists a proof based on A’s contradiction (not A) for which (not not S) is true. Since (not not S) is equal to S, it follows.)
By asserting both certain statements and their contradictions, then anything Obama’s administration is “perfectly consistent”.
You’ll have to help me out here. A syllogism might be logically valid but functionally false. Your example sounds like one. For example.
All humans have three legs.
Joe is human.
Therefore Joe has three legs.
This is logically valid but functionally false because that first premise, that axiom, is false.
The syllogism is logically valid but proceeds from a false premise. This is the failing of pure logic and the basis of most sophistry. If you’ll grant me my initial premise, I’ll win any argument with logic. My favorite ones are the ones that are invalid on a factually true but improper middle premise; I think it is an undistributed middle premise, but it has been one Helluva long time since I took logic and I struggled with it then, but that was in the days before “good trying,” e.g.:

Actually, your example is logically invalid. There are two syllogisms mixed together.
First one is:
God is love
Love is blind
Therefore, God is blind.
This ‘God is blind’ is logically valid. Next syllogism takes that conclusion:
God is blind
Steve Wonder is blind
Therefore SW is God.
This is logically invalid. And it’s the Undistributed Middle. It’s like saying:
All cats are mammals
All dogs are mammals
Therefore all dogs are cats.
Hmmm.
Bear – I don’t think the logic is to be confused with words. Logic can be very rigorous and valid. But, words, since they are only symbols of reality, can be purely imaginary and meaningless.

I think Jasper Becker’s “Hungry Ghosts” chronicle of the Mao-induced famine of 1958-1961, which claimed the lives of between 15-45 million people, puts it best:

In this world Sarah Palin’s political cross-hair symbols gets a woman shot by a madman with no interest in Palin, but bounties on people who are not white when it comes to Obama but are white when it comes to Zimmerman in the Martin shooting are of no consequence. The exact same reasoning is swiveled about like a cannon at will and reality is feathered and sculpted to produce the desired result.
The perfect expression of this is a BBC interview I saw the other day with a man from Britain’s Association of Black Journalists; the subject, racism. Incredibly, the idea that a man who belonged to an organization formally founded on race was lambasting a culture with no such organizations, as there is no white association of journalists in Britain or America, was completely lost. The mitigation is built in. Of course, it is said, we NEED, we HAVE to organize around race, because the racism of whites is so profound they do it naturally and control institutions and so the West is one big de facto association of white people, etc., etc., etc. The naked reality that there is not one single mainstream organization formally organized around race in America is further mitigated by the excuse factory that comprises the liberal Left by pointing out that white racism has merely gone underground – naked reality cannot defend white Americans because formulaic and bizarre notions are bruited about like ‘code,’ The New Jim Crow and ‘dog-whistles’ which are trotted out to ‘explain’ away reality and why white Americans, on the surface at least, are so disinterested in race – on the Left, white disinterest in race is a sign of racism, black interest a sign of anti-racism.
So onn the Left, according to men like Bill Maher and Derrick Bell, a lack of interest in race is bewilderingly a sign of racism. One has no more chance of escaping such self-sealing and circular ‘arguments’ than light does a black hole, that innocent scientific expression itself racist if you cart to visit YouTube and see a Dallas City Council meeting and an NAACP Hallmark Card event.

Excellent article. I’ve been having this same argument with people on various boards for over a year now. You can see more and more Koolaid drinkers out there how snap up every little lie and distortion coming from DC and its pet media. Show them facts from older articles, even quotes from government and Obama himself, and they don’t know what to do because shriek the latest party line, and threats.
I can’t help but think that if US public education was at the same standard it was in the 1950′s, that is top of the heap in world rankings plus ethical training, that we wouldn’t be in this fix. As it is, kids graduate with little knowledge, poor ethics, no memory but chock full of propaganda and empty self-esteem.
Taking over and “transforming” education was the key, essential step for the Left and, its been almost totally accomplished.
Today’s audience/citizenry, the product of two or three generations of such “transformed” education is–in general, much more highly propagandized than truly, broadly “educated,” is much more critical of the U.S. and much less patriotic, thinks in a whole different way, has a shorter attention span, has no universally taught ethical system, set of values, and behavioral expectations, is less well informed, and no longer has the analytical tools or set of standards that prior generations were equipped with; thus, they are much more easily fooled and led.
As a result, an increasing number of audience members are much less likely to suspect that there is a man behind the curtain. or to go looking for him, and to understand his motives if they find him.

This is what I find most troubling about what Obama is saying. He and his minions keep saying that Obamacare was passed by large “majorities” on a “bi-partisan” basis. When did that happen? Not a single Republican in the entire Congress voted for the final bill and the bill itself only passed through the Senate by using that “Reconciliation” trick. And yet today, according to Obama, it passed with “broad majorities.” I guess he means “broad majorities” of Democrats. And nobody in the main stream media calls him on this. Nobody in the main stream media points out that this is not true, let alone a lie. When the press does not do its job in a free society, we are one step closer to the totalitarian state Orwell warned about. And it’s happening now right here in America.
Yes, it is happening now in America. The Dems globalist / collectivist / statist attack is reaching a crescendo. They will pull out all the stops now to try and provoke the race war they have been craving since the 60′s; and to turn us against each other in every possible way. No doubt they are selling us out internationally too, to render us weak and defenseless in the face of expanding tyranny. That is why next November is so crucial, for the outcome of that election will determine if we live or die as a free nation.
Romney is still not my first choice; but I’ve been hearing conservatives say they would have a hard time voting for him. That is the death rattle of America. That is cutting off the nose to spite the face. If he is the nominee we MUST put all of our hesitation aside and commit to the Republican candidate with full vigor and enthusiasm. Romney is not Obama, he has no affiliations with Bill Ayers or Jeremiah Wright or George Soros. He is not a lifelong Karl Marx / Saul Alinsky bomb thrower. Romney may not be the kind to attack the Leftist machine, but then again, he might. He is a complex individual, he has sought power for a long time and he conceals much about himself. This could be either a good or bad thing. If he is elected he may understand that destiny has chosen him to help decide if “a nation, conceived in liberty, and dedicated to the proposition that all men are created equal… shall not perish from the earth”. He may live up to that expectation, and be ranked by history alongside the author of those words. But even if he does not, his election will at least to slow the Leftist assault. Time is the most critical resource in this battle. Slowing them down allows us to regain some of the levers of power; even if it is piecemeal. It also allows us to find ways to unite. That can only happen once we focus in on the things we have in common. That process is underway now. If Romney is not the anti-Obama we need, at least he will give us four more years to find him or her.
But you are correct in your wider point. The crucial battle is the long-term one. That is to say the reversal of the “long-march”, purging leftist operatives from the bureaucracy, downsizing government and reclaiming academia and the media… It seems daunting but such changes can actually happen fairly quickly. It is all about momentum. But we will have to push things to a head. We can no longer seek compromise, we need to bring the fight out into the open, to clearly state our objectives and intentions (to destroy the radical left), to expose what they have done and hold them accountable for it. Things will get a lot messier before they get any better, but that is what happens when you have to remove a cancer. Romney may or may not be the one to do it, but a Republican administration will allow us to apply more pressure than at present, and will create an environment which allows us to advance our cause more vigorously.
Well, if they wanted us to rally around a candidate, perhaps all the big players in the Republican Party, all the big donors, should not have thrown their support to Romney. Maybe they should not have supported the guy who is most loathed by the Republican base.
I will not vote for Romney. I would rather have Obama facing a hostile Republican Congress, than have the ultimate squish unhindered by Congress, just because he wears an (R) after his name. I do not care who the VP nominee is. If Romney is the nominee, I will vote for Obama, and the country can go straight to blazes.
Clearly, the Republican Party is beyond saving. They still want to play the same games as the Dems. Thus, there is no saving this country. The best we can hope for is total gridlock. Screw the damned Republicans and their idiocy. They chose to fiddle while Rome is burning.
They knew that folks fear of Obama would get their guy elected, anyway. After all, where are they gonna go? Are they gonna vote for Obama? Ha! They wouldn’t dare! Well, I dare. I refuse to be played like this. I’ll choose Obama over Obama-Lite.

well, here’s what I’ve observed. You won’t want to hear it.
The fascists are really boiling the lobster slower than we imagined. Things are bad and won’t be getting better if they win again, but it isn’t as clear as we all thought that armageddon is around the next bend. Now, it’s an open question whether the flexibility of another four year term will make armageddon happen or not. I’d say at this point that we will get closer to the cliff, but, particularly if there is an opposing congress, that it won’t be the end of life as we know it; despite plenty of rhetoric to the contrary.
If there was a leader to get behind, it would be worth getting worked up about. But there isn’t a leader; there’s only Romney, who is probably worse than McCain. At least McCain had balls, and is there really any doubt that McCain is more conservative?
So yeh, I might sit it out. I’m not at all sure that giving the Rove gang a big ole pat on the back for running the nastiest campaign in history is going to save the country. I doubt they want Romney to win anyway. They have done JUST REAL FINE with Obama in the hot seat for three years anyway, haven’t they?

I don’t think it will work. Their attempts are too transparent to too many (on both sides). Too many are invested in the status quo to risk tearing it apart. Too few identify with the OWS radicals. The goddess of health care, Kathleen Sebelius, is a truly evil woman. I used to think that Nancy Pelosi was the most evil woman in America, but Sebelius is far more evil. As usual VDH is elegant, clever and deadly accurate. Over the past several months I find myself feeling more and more like Monty Python’s “Mr. Gumby” with his plaintive wail, “My brain hurts.” Following all of the feints, fakes, gyrations, evasions and general “whatever-we-say-today-is-the-truth” posturing of our current presidential administration would challenge the worlds greatest contortionist. To take one example there is the so-called “1%.” We know that we are supposed to hate them but we aren’t ever told who they actually are. Does this group include Bill Gates? Madonna? Harvey Weinstein? Seth (*Family Guy”) MacFarlane, Albert Pujols? The Koch Brothers? (Well yeah – Probably them.)
None of this would be possible without the help of our elite media. I have to give them credit. Never has one group had to work so hard keeping all of the narratives straight. Nancy Pelosi’s famous line, “When the Supreme Court makes a decision it’s like God has spoken” has been replaced by ominous Obamaite grumblings about “unelected judges” threatenint a bill “passed with large majorities in Congress.” Nobody is supposed to notice.
My favorite part of “1984″ was when Winston Smith used his creative powers to invent a totally fictitious war hero (“Comrade Ogilvy”) to replace an embarassing past story about a prominent Party member who had just become an “un-person” and disappeared. All of this was in the name of keeping the Party narrative pure and infallible. Sound familiar?

When the propaganda and lies ministry isn’t making it impossible to believe their magazine covers, their stringer’s pictures, their forged documents, and their edited out words, it is burying stories, covering up schemes, hiding criminal acts and in one case, holding a story hostage at the LA Times building.
Academia is conspiring to conceal the truth about their own students at Duke, refusing to apologize for slander, Columbia is advancing global hatred and hiding a President’s past, and generally they are indoctrinating students in leftism through fraud.
Hollywood can’t make a dime, but they can make a propaganda film…if it has anything to do with successful business, the military, law enforcement, Judeo-Christian faith based folks or the South.
The traitor’s information stream is replete with ways to tear down this country (and the other favorite target of the leftist lie machine, Israel), and to salute the “right kind of patriotism”…which does not include loving the flag, the Pledge of Allegiance or the Constitution.
Being force fed lies by traitors and being ruled by acts of treason at our DOJ, from the NLRB, the EPA, the Department of Energy, by Reid, Pelosi, Frank and a wise Latina, an aging justice who thinks our Constitution isn’t a good model and a healthcare fraud promoter on the Supreme Court…we, the people…have little chance of fighting off the removal of our ability to self-govern this land of ours.

This administration and their un-indicted co-conspirators in the media, academia and Hollywood have torn down a great nation. VDH, when truth, honor, integrity, loyalty, allegiance become so trivial to our national instinct that we don’t rage at their destruction and virtual elimination, WE have lost our moral compass. WE have little left to save. WE don’t deserve the country handed down to us by our forefathers. If it isn’t worth fighting for, it isn’t worth preserving. It starts by allowing the truth to become a trifling thing…and a prop.
Hayek wrote at length about this in “The Road to Serfdom.” Truth has to be manipulated into what you need it to be to complete the job you want to get done.

However, may I point out the movie “Serenity” as written and directed by the inscrutable Josh Wheden. It is a space western from 2005, taking place after the final episode of the Fox TV series “Firefly”, the style of Mal Reynold’s space ship, which is named “Serenity”, which comes from the place of surrender of Independent seekers in a previous war against the oppressive, socialist Alliance government some five hundred years distant from now. (Earth’s survivors go to a new solar system and many different planets and places therein. Inner core Alliance planets are oppressive, like current big cities, outer regions are full of lawless pirates, like Somalia or our border with Mexico. But Mal Reynolds finds life in the “fly over country” of outer planets (like Reno or Wyoming or the non-socilast parts of Texas).
Reynolds finds the sweet spot away from rigid rule-makers, yet not too close to the lawless pirates. (Come to think of it, didn’t Jesus minister in the same sweet spot?)
The Alliance government has apparently never seen the movie “Forbidden Planet”, wherein a mad scientist learns he cannot handle great power (left to him by a previous genius race on a particular planet called Forbidden). No man can handle great power, because Madison taught us “men are not angels”… nor is government… hence all powerful institutions must necessarily not be… all powerful.
Anyway, Firefly/Serenity is a thoroughly well-done update on all this… AND MORE.
When the Alliance gets a chance, it tries its best efforts on a planet, called Miranda, by putting a drug in the air so that all plebes, sheep and nobodies-important simply breath in obsequies-ness and breath out “resistance is futile”. But the experiment backfires. About 90% of Miranda’s population simply dies wherever they sit. The other 10% become Reevers, a people so aggressively inhuman they either eat or rape or wear the skin of others who are not yet Reevers.
The Alliance chooses to hunt down and kill Mal Reynolds, captain of the Serenity because the Alliance doesn’t want the truth of the result of Progressive-Allpower known. It’s also easier than to hunt down and kill all the deadly Reevers and their deadly spacecraft. (The Alliance has kept the fact of the Reaver’s creation a secret to the populace, and makes rumors that empty space made the Reevers somehow go mad.)
Note, cfbleachers, that VDH sees that the California Socialist Government Alliance chooses to hunt down and ticket, harass and fine the upstanding citizens of the Fresno area, while ignoring the dangerous, aggressive, lawless “Reavers.”
Yet, in the end… injustice always makes a case against itself.
The Alliance sends its best man, a godless yet brilliant “agent” to first kill Mal Reynolds, else the truth “signal” get out.
Mal, in Western Enlightenment fashion, doesn’t kill the “agent.” He, in the end, converts him.
The biggest danger of the agent, was his unshakable belief in the Progressive-Alliance. That was the agent’s god.
So one lesson from Serenity, is that the truth wins in the end, and that those who believe in the Western Way, have to believe in it more strongly and more vigorously than the other idiots who believe in what will always be a lesser god.
As Bruce Thornton says, if the enemies of liberty want to bring their creed of death against innocent humans who’s only guilt is alleging themselves to the love protocols of Western Enlightenment, the West will put their name to the test, their god of death to the test, and give them what they must have, which is death.
We shall have to kill the Reavers-of-Death-Devotion and stop their creation, which spawned from lies of power-hungry but thoroughly deluded megalomaniacs of Progressive Alliance.
And somehow, we shall do it with Love.
John Wayne and John Wayne showed us in The Seekers, and many others did also in countless Westerns.
Nathan Fillon (as Mal) and Josh Whedon show us in Firefly/Serenity… and many other do also in Space Westerns.

I never thought of Serenity/Firefly as political commentary, just the best science fiction ever. More great dialogue per minute than anything else I’ve seen. Glad to see you reference it and give a more serious perspective on it.
You may be right that truth wins in the end, but at what cost? The ultimate check and balance on government is revolution. Hopefully, we don’t need to go there.
The God of the ‘verse doesn’t like confusion, and currently there is a super abundance of it.
Suppose Green Martians watched a spaceship from Earth land, a Muslim-Terrorist spaceship. Its occupants announce, “We have come to spread holy Jihad!”

However the frequency and volume of the offenses has reached a pitch never before seen in our lifetimes. I think Maimonides got it right-

I really think this phenomenon has a great deal more to do with our present way of being as a society — lazy, impulsive, instant gratification-seeking and full of just enough Google, YouTube and Wiki to make us dangerous — than political self-preservation. These days it does seem that an awful lot of recent and past history is changing by way of speakwrites and disappearing through memories holes. But sadly, IMO, it’s largely our own doing.
#51 Menachem Ben Yakov has it right. The problem today is “truth” is defined by what a jury decides or by what a government decides not by some absolute standard. If a sleezy lawyer can lie and fabricate a story about abuse like Casey Anthony’s lawyer did…then if the jury buys it the “truth” becomes reality.

Excellent stuff. This administration believes, correctly, that only the most obsessive news junkies will notice the rewriting of “facts” (let’s call it what it is; propaganda). My favorite example in recent years actually comes from Europe. In 2009 they had the 20th anniversary of pulling down the Berlin Wall with no mention of President Reagan. How’s that for rewriting history?
I’m glad JK mentioned “The Road to Serfdom”. Hayek noted that socialists believe information and science should serve the political agenda; hence truth is not really relevant (the same was noted in “Atlas Shrugged”). VDH points out the “information” side, but let’s not forget the science side. The EPA doctored reports to support their offshore oil moratorium. The DOE did the same to support closing Yucca Mountain. It looks like DOJ was using Fast and Furious to justify tighter gun regulations. The administration tried to influence testimony to the FCC on LightSquared. It also tried to influence testimony by ECSI on job impact numbers related to coal mining. And that’s just the stuff I can think of off the top of my head.
So, this isn’t hypocrisy, it’s propaganda. I think a lot of our leftist comrades know it. While we point out their inconsistencies, they laugh and manufacture more lies. I don’t ask how these people sleep at night – they know they’re lying. Instead, I wonder if their progressive agenda is so righteous, why do they need to resort to deception, propaganda, and election fraud to advance it?
Those of us news junkies with good memories need to constantly point out the propaganda to the rest of our citizens, in addition to explaining the rational and moral basis for the conservative position.

Speaking of “truth” what’s the deal with the reawakening of the “birther conspirators,” now with the imprimatur of the noble Sheriff Arpaio, a man who defies the Left’s attempts to put him in the same death crypt as the birthers. World Net Daily seems to be the only news publication daring to venture into the Liberal target zone and expose themselves to the virulent tirades from the Left that have rendered the entire conservative establishment unable to utter a word, critical or otherwise, unless I’m looking in all the wrong places. Arpaio’s witness list and list of allegations is expanding and the silence is deafening.

Healthcare insurance will create 4 million jobs and save the economy—now it lets people keep their homes. We have noticed a large number of news articles, references, and databases hare being removed or changed: removing the statue of the leader or, as the Mayans did, scrape the face off the monument or stela. Wasserman claiming we all wish the economy to fail (first you said we wished it would fail and therefor by strength of wish it happened; then you said it was improving; then you said it was great and we are saved; the reality is its piss poor and getting worse and everything you have done has failed).
Regardless of the full blitz and extreme efforts to the national reengineering of fact and conversation, the individual realities of families and people will be difficult to cover with the sands of time, change of a fad, a chisel or media propaganda messages through braying of multiple sheeples. Oh, and a few good people brave to stand up with facts to enlightend folks and also remind them where the position (goal posts) was two months ago or two years will always help.
The article asks, “Did not the Obama administration go to federal court to ask justices to set aside the Defense of Marriage Act…?”
No, not exactly. They declined to argue in favor of enforcing one particular aspect of that Act (DoMA) in a lawsuit that had already been brought by someone else (Obama’s DoJ argued in defense of DoMA otherwise). Somewhat related, but not the same thing at all as going to court to get DoMA overturned. There are enough actual facts that can be used to show how bad the Obama administration is. It’s not necessary to stretch the truth to do it – that would be counterproductive, as well as adopting the Democrat strategy of misrepresenting the facts.
This is in no sense an original observation, but it bears repeating:
Barack Obama and his minions on the Left will say and do anything that they feel will advance their cause.
Similarly, nothing they say or do should be taken at face value in light of the above.
The Instapundit has often called ours “the worst political class ever.” True enough. But what does that say about us if we allow them to get away with hijacking the country?
Orwell perhaps was most notably influenced by the removal of Leon Trotsky from the collective Russian memory to the point that he never existed.
Trotsky was far from the only victim of Stalin’s efforts to remove his enemies from public consciousness. In fact, a great many of Stalin’s enemies were effectively removed from books and thus memories. The expert in this field is David King who reputedly has at least a quarter million examples showing the great efforts made to remove Stalin’s enemies from all visual and textual records. His book, The Commissar Vanishes, is breathtaking for the audacity which Stalin’s minions showed in removing people from photographs and paintings.
In some cases, the removal of once-important people was undertaken artfully and with considerable skill. In other cases, the crudest possible methods were used, including simply pouring black ink over the person who was no longer wanted in the picture, covering that person with a glued silhouette or literally cutting that person out of the picture with scissors. Anyone who had run afoul of the regime – and that included a lot of people given that millions of people were swept up in the purges – was erased by one method or another.
The artists were sometimes used to add people to pictures, particularly Stalin. For instance, King’s book includes a picture depicting Lenin’s arrival in Moscow in April 1917 after Lenin had been in foreign exile for close to 20 years. The painting shows Lenin stepping down from a train carriage with Stalin right behind him. In fact, Stalin was not on the train with Lenin and was not in the group greeting Lenin. Truth was not a deterrent though: the regime’s artists knew that their job was to portray Stalin as Lenin’s closest disciple and confidante.
If Obama shows the same audacity as Stalin did, we can expect to see photographs and paintings of Obama leading the Seal Team Six takedown of Osama bin Laden. Perhaps he’ll even be depicted as the man who actually shoots bin Laden.
And when we look at photographs of this era, we’ll see that all of Obama’s embarassments are removed. Van Jones will never have existed. His remark about having visited all but one of the 57 United States will have been corrected to say 50 states. All of Rev. Wright’s pronouncements will have been sanitized to sound patriotic. Etc. etc.
Based on what has been written about Trotsky, he earned his own sad fate. It’s as good a lesson as the quick version which ignores his crimes.
Trotsky lived on through Alinksy and his diciples. It wasn’t for nuthin’ Ms. Rodham wrote her thesis on Chicago’s own Saul Alinsky.
We have an all-out onslaught on traditional American values by the radical far-left and radical Progressives, et. al. They have prepared and intensively set the ground work for these days not only since the 1930s and 1960s but in reality since the beginning of the 20th Century. Traditional Americans have been living normal lives and building the society and economy and also sacrificing blood and treasure to protect America and keep the world from rampant tyranny. On the other hand, the mentioned previous groups have been plotting the destruction of our society and economy as we knew it and struggle to keep knowing it.
Until the American public is educated as to the aims and methods of these destructive groups and how to identify them in our midst, they will continue to undermine our foundations and structures largely unopposed. The public needs to understand that the destructive groups methods and tools and how to counter them. The methods and tools include lying, propaganda, false-histories, divisive tactics, lack of respect for our lawful society and free-market economy, a lack of belief in America, and so on. In fact there is a loathing of America and traditional American values that have raised our nation and the world to unparalleled progress and prosperity in the 20th Century.
The public needs to understand that these groups do not want Americans to experience the pursuit of happiness nor enjoy the other traditional freedoms including life, liberty and private property. It is an odd fact that while any hint of prejudice against African Americans is instantly suppressed, it is always open season on Chinese. My suspicion is that our hostility toward the Chinese has to do with the fact that the Chinese booted Christian missionaries out of China a century ago. The State department evolved from the American Christian Missionary movement and hostility toward the Chinese is probably native to the culture of Foggy Bottom.
As a Jewish American, I feel closer to the Chinese than I do to Europeans. And not just because Europe is a Jewish graveyard. The Chinese, like the Jews, are an ancient people. Is the patently false claim that the Church opposed Hitler and the Nazis and protected European Jewry during WWII among the grotesque falsehoods you are “willing to take,” LGoPs? As for distortion of history, it is worth recalling that when the Soviets obliterated someone or something from history they would instruct Soviet citizens to excise passages containing politically incorrect facts from standard reference texts and insert new, officially approved facts. Before we leave the subject of intellectual suppression, there is the matter of Orwell’s missing radio broadcasts. Orwell had a regular program on British radio during the war. The deafening silence from the Vatican while millions were exterminated by the Nazis was only one of many scathing criticisms of the Church regularly heard on Orwell’s radio program.
