Reflections on the Revolution in America
America’s Extreme Make-over
These are exciting though scary revolutionary times, akin to the constant acrimony in the fourth-century BC polis, mid-nineteenth century revolutionary Europe, or — perhaps in a geriatric replay — the 1960s. This is an era when the fundamental assumptions of the individual and the state are now being redefined, albeit in a weird, high-tech, globalized landscape.
Radical But Well Off
A word of caution: we are not talking about hoi polloi versus hoi oligoi, or the commune on the barricades fighting the estate owners. No, not this time around.
Instead, the present attempt to remake America is the effort of the liberal well-to-do — highly educated at mostly private universities, nursed on three decades of postmodern education, either with inherited wealth or earning top salaries, lifestyles of privilege indistinguishable from those they decry as selfish, and immune from the dictates they impose on others.
Such are basically the profiles of the Obama cabinet and sub-cabinet, the pillars of liberalism in the Congress and state legislatures, the public intellectuals in the universities and foundations, the arts crowd, and the Hollywood elite. Let us be clear about that.
The Distant Poor
They are all battling on behalf of “them,” the poorer half of America, currently in need of some sort of housing, education, food, or legal subsidy, whom the above mentioned elite, in the way they live, send their children to school, socialize, and vacation so studiously avoid. (The New York Times owners are likely to follow the cut-throat business practices of Wall Street, live in the most refined areas of New York, and assume privileges indistinguishable from other CEOs; the difference is that they so visibly care about those they never see or seek out).
Note well the term “poor.” These are not Dickensian or Joads poor, but largely Americans who by the standards of the 1940s would be considered lucky. Partly because of globalized Chinese consumer goods, and partly redistributive practices of a half-century, our current “underclass” has access to clothes, electronics, entertainment, apartments, cell phones, transportation, etc., undreamed of by the middle class of the recent past. I live in one of the poorest areas of one of the poorest counties in a bankrupt state; and those I see poor are not like those I saw 40 years ago in the same locale.
No, the revolution is not one of the abject poor and starving storming the Bastille, but of the angry and self-righteous well-off— angry as hell that the less well-off are living lives quite differently from the very well-off. (A trodden down poor person today flies standby from San Francisco to LAX; a very rich person gets into his $50 million Gulfstream — but note modernism’s paradox: the poor person’s United Airlines pilots are as good, he gets there as safely and in some comfort, and not much later as well.)
Funny Revolutionaries
Some of the revolutionaries are guided by genuine noblesse oblige. Others act out of guilt and can justify their own consumption if they “care” for a distant poorer other. Still more explain their own privilege through using government to redistribute income. A few are driven by genuine hatred — stemming from the fact that the highly educated academic or artist makes far less than the doctor, lawyer, CEO, or — heaven forbid — tire store owner, family orthodontist, or owner of a half dozen Little Caesar pizza franchises.
How can that be that the PhD who reads Old English, or the painter who emulates Pollock, or the writer who is the next Fitzgerald, or the AP teacher is given so much less by society than the crass, smug captain of industry, who reads less, has no real taste, and hardly understands his own existential dilemma? Should not salary and capital be predicated on good intentions, high education, rhetoric and argumentation, and a bit of necessary sarcasm?
Liberal Endangered Species
Over the last fifty years it was received wisdom that a liberal Democrat could not be entrusted to run the U.S. LBJ’s Great Society had largely failed. Its legacy were debts, high taxes, bloated bureaucracies, the destruction of the inner-city family, and welfare dependency.
Jimmy Carter’s administration was forever known for 1979, the annus terribilis in which all of his prior sanctimonious preaching came home to roost in one year — the Chinese invaded Vietnam, the Soviets invaded Afghanistan, the Iranians invaded our embassy in Teheran, the communist government in exile invaded Nicaragua, along with the rise of radical Islam, the abdication of the shah, and so on. I’ll pass on his simultaneous rising unemployment, rising interest, and rising inflation.
Bill Clinton, who never received 50% of the vote, wisely after 1994 governed from the left/center. In both the trivial (school uniforms, grandstanding about some subsidies for more policemen, etc.) and the profound (welfare reform, balanced budgets), he finally rejected Carterism — albeit with the same symbolic leftist appointments.
That Perfect Storm, Again
But, as we have discussed, with the advent of Barack Obama, the liberal clouds lined up in perfect storm fashion as never before: a) Obama waged a brilliant stealth campaign, as the Senate’s most partisan member. The Rev. Wright devotee, Wall Street favorite, and rejecter of public campaign financing somehow ran as centrist, purple state anti-Wall Street populist; b) ennui after 8 years of Republicans helped; c) so did the good will about the landmark candidacy of our first serious black presidential candidate; d) the September 2008 meltdown destroyed McCain’s 2-4% lead for good (even though Wall Street had given far more to Obama, and its bad actors were empowered by the Freddie/Fannie mess); e) the McCain campaign at times seemed to want to lose nobly than to win in a Chicago barroom fight.
The New America?
The result is that we are witnessing a quiet but insidious revolution. At home, if successful, the state and its vast array of newly hired employees, will administer our health care system, as well as education loans (and that will need a sort of new agency like the Postal Service or DMV). We now take for granted take-overs of much of the automobile industry and financial organizations. Should cap and trade pass, the administration would be dictating energy use. If you add it up — going to the doctor, driving a car, stopping by an ATM, flipping on the lights, taking out a student loan — you could run bump into a lot of new federal bureaucrats. And that’s the point, isn’t it after all?
I doubt anyone in the administration believes that these new public sectors of the economy will be better run. (After all, the Obamas themselves did not wish to live in a city-run housing tract, or send their children to an inner-city public school: wishing to be paid by the government is rather different than relying on the government).
So What’s the Plan?
So the point instead is I think fourfold:
a) those who profit from running these new agencies will be our new anointed class, at the top, Ivy-League technocrats, and lower down among the ranks, the politically deserving: power and patronage; b) the resultant cost increases will require more taxes on those whose ill-gotten gains should be properly redistributed to the commune; gorge the beast; c) in political terms, a constituency that either administers or receives federal larges (think of an ACORN/SEIU hybrid) will prove a predictably loyal base in future elections: dependent future voters; d) federal and state wages and pensions will remind us all during tough times that government “service” is the only steady, reliable, and fair employer: we will all end up the same.
Some readers point out — “But wait, this is insane: they will kill the golden goose. What fuels redistributive government are taxes from the creation of private wealth that demands open markets, incentives for profit, reasonable taxes to allow enjoyment of profits, principled exploitation of natural resources, and government enhancement rather than restriction of business.”
Why Do They Do it?
But I think the Obamians either have not read history and so do not appreciate how statism/socialism/communism have impoverished all that they have touched, or they assume capitalism solely is run by nice-guy billionaires like Buffet, Gates, and Soros who apparently clapped their hands, made a few billion, and then are happy to live on a billion or two and give the rest away to progressive causes.
There is no appreciation that scrappy, often grubby Americans this minute are scrambling on their computer terminals, on their forklifts, in their commuting cars to run a business, provide a service, or move up the employment ladder in hopes of improving their lot and leaving behind something for their kids. They are the engines of capitalism and they don’t often go to Yale, or Rev. Wright’s church, or work at Human Resources Department. And when they all do, we will be in sorry shape.
America Flipped
Abroad, the world is confused. They want to, and still do, mouth the old stale anti-American envy. But even our critics sense that America is morphing into something more like, well, themselves. (When Obamians brag that the world is beginning to like us, they sort of have a point: the world’s communitarians (the majority on this planet) do like us becoming like them.)
There is a lot of irony here to be sure. Europe played good cop to our bad and posed as the soft-power utopian, while assuming American military power was always there to support Western interests. Not now. We are gravitating to the left of Europe on issues in the Middle East, Africa, and Latin America. Our Latin American policies seem closest to Brazil’s. In the Middle East we see eye to eye with Jordan. Whatever Britain seems to do, we either ignore it, take it for granted, or vote present on it. Israel is a neutral now, not an ally; bowing to the Saudi autocrat is not “insulting,” an announcement that Jerusalem might build some apartments apparently is.
We laugh at the lunatic appointments like a Van Jones or Anita Dunn, or some of the lawyers at Justice who seemed so worried about the plight of terrorists at Guantanamo. But they were logical appointments, not aberrations, and are matched by hundreds of the more anonymous now working in government. We shall meet new names and new faces when a comprehensive immigration bill comes up (=blanket amnesty), and cap and trade is reintroduced.
The Mind of the Revolutionary
Where do these ideologies derive? Again, I wish I could say that they are grassroots driven, by the muscular classes who are victimized by business and, in their cry-from-the-heart protests, demand a fairer cutting of the pie. But so often the utopianism is from above, and predicated on abstract education, relative affluence, and little exposure to business or indeed much beyond the metrosexual world in general.
So fascinating these modern revolutionaries. A Buffet does not choose to pay the high income tax rate on his earnings, though he surely could in lieu of lecturing how taxes are too low. A Gates Sr. does not plan for his offspring to pay into the strapped treasury needed inheritance taxes, though he remonstrates that they must be raised on everyone else. A Geithner does not comply with the tax code, though he assumes it should be raised on others. A Gore lectures on honesty and truth and science on his way to a $100 million con that turns him from an affluent ex-politician into a global grandee.
I’m sorry — I don’t take seriously much of anything from this wannabe revolutionary bunch.

Take heart for the moment dear VDH. It’s not over. Just maybe enough patriotism and appreciation for American exceptionalism remains to spoil their day.
IMHO: Leftism is inherently evil in all of its’ variants, strains and insidious morphing/hope-n-changing-forms.
When Leftism encroaches into Conservatism, the morphing and changing and viral like creeping bleeds into the fundamental blood&bones of America as tidbit, crumb and solid-built wall are picked, etched and even sledge-hammered away from our Constitution with great force/fanfare by the minority voices.
The good thing about extremes is that extremes force you to make a solid choice, no fence-sitting, you are either ‘yea’ or ‘nay’…no ifs/ands/buts. The cards are on the table, no bluffing, huffing or puffing about it.
The beauty is, that, what will come to light in the aftermath of the 0bama-admin is that our capitalist system with all of its’ human frailties, warts and faulty wiring, actually worked and we became fat and happy and even our poorest have the lowly complaint of ‘obesity’ rather than ‘starvation’ (not to mention those cell-phones/computers/cable-televisions). The parts the ruined our capitalism was socialism which ALWAYS proves to fail and yet… here we are…
Repeating the same self-defeating behavior and expecting different results if only it were ‘tweaked’ a bit…
EPIC FAIL
God in heaven hear us.
Wow! Keep giving them hell, Doc. You’ve got them pegged ‘big time’.
Those you describe have the reins of power and so must be taken seriously if only for the lasting damage that they threaten to impart.
I am sickened at the implications for the future as I believe that, if this socialist metamorphosis does indeed take place, that we will first necessarily see the collapse of our country economically and socially in order that the slate be wiped clean so that no vestiges of The Republic or Free Market remain to taint the socialist nirvana.
In any case, thanks for another excellent article.
Ah, but good doctor, November cometh.
All things in their own time.
Bottom line:
It’s about the money but not really. We just don’t like thieves.
The “poor” would be even richer if there were less government interference.
Why do they do it? These second handers? They hate the creative among us but more likely they hate the Creator who lives among us. “they cling to the bible and their guns” Obamas trumpet call to the “elite”
The “elite” bluster and they boast but they are really just dead and dying and it ain’t pretty to watch.
The power still does and will forever lay with the truth and the just still live by faith.
The farmer still sleeps on it till morning when he wakes up with the solution for the days issues.
How they do hate that.
the number of stupid people has been increasing at a faster rate then not stupid people.
one of the negatives of democracy is stupid people can vote.
..another problem is that stupid people run for political office and run what was the education system. it really needs to be renamed to something like day care or indoctrination of the next group of stupid people.
at least the private schools are turning out decently educated people who can witness their own demise at the hands of the later.
great essay VDH
cheers
Liberalism is a mental disorder. Liberals feel they win debates by calling those with defendable positions derogatory sounding names; but in reality the baseless name callers only describe themselves!
I am troubled by labels like birther, truther being used on people who ask questions that should be asked/answered by the msm/press. I think anyone who labels questioners, rather than posting satisfactory answers, should be labelled “buttheads”.
At some point the “dog” will decide it wags the tail, not the other way around.
The family will once again become very important, the roles of mom and dad primary. The shift to state’s rights from federal largess will be seen as a worthwhile political goal.
The narcissists of the 60′s will be ushered or thrown off the stage once and for all along with many who seek to continue their games.
Then again, Sean Penn might choose to become a politician and run for Governor of California. Paris Hilton may make another “private” video.
Obama will ask Congress to erect a grand statue of his father.
Madonna will commit suicide, leaving behind a book, not just a note for all of us to read!
“This is It” will become a common phrase in language and daily speak.
Inflation will finally destroy the American economy followed by the world economy, leading to World War III…
Dark, dark times are before us, darker than our leader’s skin.
Whitey will get his due!
I have known many such Red Diaper Trust Fund Babies. They usually inherit wealth, never work a day in their lives, aside from sitting on a board or hosting a charity event. Because of their unending guilt over their circumstances, they are either Liberal or outright communist. They pretend to write a book which somehow never gets published, or other such pursuit.
My contempt for them is truly boundless, since everything I own I earned by the sweat of my brow, which they feel nonetheless compelled to redistribute to the lazy and the unproductive. I have more compassion for head lice.
Dr. VDH,
Insightful article even by your standards.
Supreme AC, your English errors were distracting — I wouldn’t normally quibble, but I found my agreement with your points sidetracked by the errors (esp. because of the (totally justified) attack on public education).
Before everyone gets a little too forlorn, just think what we all will be able to do with the money we save once our health insurance premiums are reduced by 3,000%. Life will be grand.
They give aid to the poor and defective so that they might sleep soundly on their money stuffed mattresses.
Meanwhile those that work hard so that they might stash a few dollars in their mattresses can’t get ahead because it is their money that is the aid.
Regardless of political inclination, America has two sets of people:
The ruling class
The working class
Take your pick where you belong.
“I’m sorry — I don’t take seriously much of anything from this wannabe revolutionary bunch.”
Mr. Hanson? I hate to break it to you but it’s a little too late for that statement. That’s what we all said back in the 50′s and 60′s. We laughed at them and now the loud, LSD-addled minds of the hippie generation control our schools, our culture, our government and are at our throats right now.
The question is, what do we do about it? Every day they are shredding the Constitution right in our face (the Slaughter solution [boy, does that ever sound chillingly ironic]) despite our loud, collective cry of HELL NO. Should we wait until laws are officially passed by decree and Congress is dissolved by the new president-for-life?
Whatever the outcome, this is all not going to end well.
Spot on again, Dr. Hanson.
There is no longer any doubt in my mind that our country is purposely being destroyed by Obama, Reid, Pelosi and a host of other “progressives” with whom we’re painfully familiar.
The real question is why?
What particular type of mental illness inhabits the twisted mind of leftists who want to control the thoughts and actions of someone else? Why do they not want the same things for everyone that they want for themselves? Why the overwhelming urge to “engineer” a society that will only result in centrally controlled misery for the populace when the alternative (freedom) is so much better?
Strange that as I read VDH and do with heartfelt appreciation assimilate . . . for resistance is futile . . . yes . . . I jest. I will resist. But I think it would be best since “I make less than $45,000.00 per year” . . . to click on the block labeled “Borg State” and get my Government Grant for “re-education”. I just love it that I can come to this blog, blow my brains out electronically for a cause I believe in . . . while the guy I read and seriously I do respect . . . gets a kick back from the people WE BOTH are disparaging. America . . . ain’t it great. Oh, I fully realize that VDH has no, or little say, over what advertisements come up on my computer screen . . . afterall his is under pursuit by the Borg too.
This quote comes from Centesimus Annus of John Paul the Great: “The fundamental error of socialism is anthropological in nature. Socialism considers the individual person simply as an element, a molecule within the social organism, so that the good of the individual is completely subordinated to the functioning of the socio-economic mechanism. Socialism likewise maintains that the good of the individual can be realized without reference to his free choice, to the unique and exclusive responsibility which he exercises in the face of good or evil. Man is reduced to a series of social relationships, and the concept of the person as the autonomous subject of moral decisions disappears.”
Liberal progressives want to force every one to their knees. They’re sadists. They crave positions of power and want for us all to suffer equally and miserably so they can attain ever more control over us. They’re megalomaniacs who constantly refuse to see the wrong of their ways, their hypocrisy, and downright condescension and aloofness. Today’s liberal/progressive personifies every ill, omen, ignorance, convoluted moral equivalence our framers warned us about centuries ago.
If they think they’re spearheading a revolution, they’re in for a rude awakening. Obama and his cronies dangerously misjudge their executive powers and overreach, so much so there will be a revolution alright – just not the one their hero Saul Alinsky ‘hoped’ for or envisioned. This is not the former Soviet Union, Cuba or North Korea. Real patriots and Americans just don’t roll over, kneel, or bow to anyone.
My comment is that I wish we would stop commenting on an obviously wrong situation and start doing something to correct it. I have begun corrective action.
God does bless us. The question is, “Will we bless God?”
Having spent the last decade living in 2 countries in western Europe, I can not for the life of me understand why the USA would want to emulate them. What about double digit unemployment and loss of liberty to the nanny state is all that attractive? What is desireable about an increasingly parasitic culture?
I can come to two possibilities:
1. Either it is all about power and control, or
2. The liberal mind operates on a seperate plane beyond my ability to understand.
VDH,
I’m mad as hell and I’m not going to take it any more!
My brother who has been unemployed for at least three years is starting to drink the cool aid. He’s an electrical engineer so it’s not like he’s working at McDonald’s. He’s upset that Republicans are not helping Obama fix things.
I’m getting discouraged that we’ve lost all reason. I’m sorry but blogs like VDH make so much sense but nobody listens or understands. How can we get this turned around???
If this monstrous “health care reform” is enacted, we will be standing at the edge of the abyss. The elections in November will not make enough of a difference to matter, unless super majorities of conservatives are elected in both houses. If the government created by our Founders still existed, we wouldn’t be at this juncture. The only thing that has ever separated us from tyranny is the Constitution, but it has now been so weakened from decades of assault by the left that it may not sufficient to prevent the “fundamental transformation” that BO talked about prior to the election. We cannot count on the Courts to stop it, we may not be able to undo it at the ballot box, what options are left? We are approaching a critical juncture in our history and while critical junctures make for interesting historical narratives, they are rarely pleasant times in which to live.
Another excellent article Dr. Hanson!
The contrasts are stark. Change in November will bring hope.
The idiots presently in power are doomed: the state of American power is so self-evidently attenuated that only the most useful-idiot variety of dis-educated liberal clings to Obama’s crypto-Leninist campaign cliches. This actually presents an opportunity for the entire country – namely, that the Leninist wing of the Democratic party will be so publicly annihilated in the coming elections that the Blue Dogs will be able to re-take that party and push it in the direction of common sense, particularly with respect to foreign policy.
We need two strong parties in this country. There is no example of a political system in which more than two parties successfully administer the fortunes of a commonwealth. The Democrats have been honeycombed with socialists for a long time, but these idiots in D.C. will be their undoing. Let’s just hope our foreign enemies can’t convert on the opportunity presented for these next few years.
“highly educated at mostly private universities, nursed on three decades of postmodern education”
There is no such thing as being truly educated in a postmodernist milieu. Such a person, at best, is a pseudo-educated fool. Moreover, the softer discipline credentials are often phonier than the proverbial three-dollar bill. Grade inflation in the Ivy League schools has been the norm even for the majority white students since minimally the last thirty-five years. Barack Obama is a poorly read and intellectually shallow man—and he is not a great exception to the general rule. Most Ivy League graduates in the so-called Humanities are not particularly bright.
What I don’t get is that in every marxist revolution the intellectuals are usually the biggest cheerleaders and then the first against the wall. They are truly stupid.
Truth be told, our modern academics are overpaid. Their teaching skills are mediocre. Their curricula are do not prepare their students for life. The centaincy of their declared self-importance reflects the incessant ‘good job’ mantra they were exposed to growing up, every time they picked their nose. Truth be told, contemporary artists earn exactly what they should; their ‘art’ is mainly garbage. Truth be told, the majority in the performing arts earn what their efforts are worth, considering they neither produce anything tangible, nor provide income, health insurance, or other benefits for anyone but themselves. Of course, this does not apply to the obscenely overcompensated celebs, an uhfortunate consequence of American cultural tastes. Perhaps we should start redistributing the earningn of our Hollywood elites. Obama’s domestic and international policies have been unmitigated disasters. The man is either a fool or a knave. My children and grandchildren will pay the price for the monumental mistake that was his ascension to power.
They THINK they’re immune. If this coup d’etat succeeds, they will quickly find out otherwise. Can anyone say ‘Lubayanka?’
Leftist elites remind me more each day of the scribes and Pharisees of old. They summon us with silver horns that we might bear witness as they bestow a shekel on a beggar. We must acknowledge publicly, you see, their superior moral virtue. Like the Pharisees of old they maintain their social position through intricate interpretations of the law, even as they violate the spirit of the law to their own advantage. They scream blasphemy at anyone who disagrees, and crucify the truth speaker on a cross of trumped up charges. Yes, we have seen this story before.
Unlike the New Deal, the current Leftists radical ideas of ObamaCare & their other anti-business & pro-Big Brother Government has been resoundingly rejected. Pelosi is forced to use chicanery & arcane parliamentary gimmicks to force ObamaCare through without a single vote with the “Slaughter Solution.” The fact remains Pelosi cannot find enough 216 YES votes, despite all the bribes & arm-twisting. Even if she wins though deception, she loses. I don’t think Pelosi will find enough YES votes by Saturday. Democrats are asking Obama to postpone his trip again which means the Saturday vote won’t happen.
Obama has destroyed himself with ObamaCare. Nancy Pelosi, Louise Slaughter, & Steny Hoyer all need to be removed from Congress for their bending of the rules; they have gone too far. Obama is a lame duck since the people no longer trust him.
Liberalism is intellectual laziness. Yes, I know academia is it’s center, but it is build on complex retorical arguments, that are interesting only in the convolution of the imagination. No work required.
Conservativtism is based on making hard and hopefully righteous and informed choices, then doing the Hard Work required to get-r-done.
I am a construction executive, with a first rate BS and MBA. I see the immigrant labor as well as the native craftsman daily. I live and work in Metro DC. I see and live with the gov drones daily as well.
You pick who is more real.
Dr. Hanson, great article as always. I just have one comment. I think you had a misspelling in the last sentence. “A Gore lectures on honesty and truth and science on his way to a $100 million con that turns him from an affluent ex-politician into a global grandee.” Should read “A Gore lectures on honesty and truth and science on his way to a $100 Billion con that turns him from an affluent ex-politician into a global grandee.”
There, that’s more likely.
Re #15/vivo:
[...] America has two sets of people: The ruling class;
The working class; Take your pick where you belong.”
Vivo, I go with Michelle Obama – it’s something to be a working class hero -
Regards -
“Liberalism is intellectual laziness.”
Liberalism is inherently anti-intellectual. It is contemptuous of evidence. Ideology is virtually everything. The adherents belong to a secularized religion of sorts. There are doctrines requiring one’s assent of mind and will. Dissenters will also be severely punished. At the end of the day, the hard-core Progressive mindset is not much different intellectually from reading tarot cards and predicting the future via a crystal ball. A postmodernist individual openly asserts that objectivity is impossible. Why would anyone therefore expect them to value rational thinking?
I am worried. Prof. Hanson, I sense a stoic sadness in your article, as if the coming Socialism is inevitable. I share that feeling.
My gut tells me Obamacare will pass. The hell with November as a threat; their constancy of pressure on this issue has transformed into a “it’s better to vote for it now and say you’ve actually done something”.
The fait accompli might be the tipping point where a majority of Americans see that there’s a new game, and it’s about getting as much as you can from the government. The producers will produce less since there’s less incentive. The entitled classes will want, expect, and demand more.
After Obamacare, there’s cap and trade. After that, what? Everyone has a “right” to a four-bedroom, 2.5 bath home?
Who’s our Spartacus? Who’s our John Galt? Who’s the one that can articulate the resistance?
Those small little flanking movements, like the Texas history book changes, win battles and victory in battle wins wars. This administration is going to end badly, for the liberals.
To your enumeration of the points in the plan, Dr. Hanson, I would add a fifth, and most insidious: After everyone is hooked on entitlements, the party of entitlements will be safely re-elected to safeguard those entitlements, much as the Democrats ran for decades on protecting Social Security from the evil Republicans, without regard to their actual governance. Thus corruption, cronyism and outright incompetence will draw only a tut-tut from the usual media sources and the politicians will forever remain in the clover.
Great article and so very true about the “elites” running the new show..
So, i will say it again, and will keeping hammering away at it….WE MUST CHANGE AND TAKE CHARGE OF OUR EDUCATION SYSTEM!!!
Even in this article it he talks about the “educated elites” from all the right schools who have been weened on this progressive stuff for decades!
So first order is take back our country THEN and very quickly take back the schools!
If we take back our country without also taking back the schools…IT WILL NOT MATTER!
More and more progressives are being produced and slowly but surely they will have the numbers and it will be too late, if it isn’t already!
BTW..if pelosi uses the “deemed” to pass heathcare garbage…i believe it is time for the REAL revolution…a hard “iron” nosed march on Washington…..
While I will not state details, suffice it to say that I am staff at a social service in a very affluent neighborhood. All of our highly Liberal, monied neighbors – that is, those who would hound you to tell you all about how you must pursue “social justice at all costs” – treat us like dirt. In point of fact, they are downright nasty about it, and make demands upon us and our clients that skirt downright harassment.
NIMBY is not just an acronym: it’s how they treat the world. Demand all manners of things that they will not tolerate when it lands in their own back yard.
I believe there is a strategic objective to the expansion of Obamist liberalism that Dr. Hanson does not discuss. By enlarging the coalition of civilians dependent upon government administration of health, education (loans), manufacturing (automobiles) the MILITARY BUDGET will become more vulnerable. When push comes to shove in the coming decade, a few percentage points shifted from military towards civilian spending may become politically feasible. The military lobby is the strongest in DC. But a small percentage of it might be shifted towards civilian programs via this enlarged coalition. I believe some version of this kind of thinking underlies the liberal view of the world and their agenda.
You’re right. It’s not hoi polloi versus hoi oligoi. It’s hoi polloi versus hoi mandarini. Ever notice how one of the badges of entry into our modern mandarin class is that they do no work for profit? Oh, they’ll work in law or journalism but not with an eye to the bottom line–only in pursuit of “social justice.” But mostly they gravitate to the arts, academia and government, where no one can accuse them of working with other than their superior heart and consciousness.
Through the 80s, I thought this Societally Conscious crowd (as Arnold Mitchell dubbed them) would be our enlightenment, our salvation. Now I wonder if we will survive their postmodern psychosis. I actually thought it a good thing Obama got elected so that they could collapse through the folly of their many vanities and pretensions (and get it over with) rather than stay on the outside puffing themselves up with their self-righteous superiority and condemnation of all that is commercial and middle class (like Sarah Palin).
If you add it up — going to the doctor, driving a car, stopping by an ATM, flipping on the lights, taking out a student loan — you could run bump into a lot of new federal bureaucrats. And that’s the point, isn’t it after all?
I’d say so.
…the élitist being PO’ed that the guy flying coach on United can get there almost as fast as he does in his private Gulfstream.
Adjustments must be made.
…the self-anointed crowd wanting to compromise the liberty of the “little guy”, control the level and quality of “healthcare” he receives and so on, shackle him on all fronts, social, financial, political etc.
…the élitist PO’ed that the playing field in America is too level already. He wants to make our freedoms a function of patronage, his own, re-feudalize the playing field.
A disgruntled, angry holier-than-thou prig, this élitist.
(Does anyone still doubt that Leftoid-ism is a mental dis-order ?)
the McCain campaign at times seemed to want to lose nobly than to win in a Chicago barroom fight.
That pretension to civility was a disgusting dimension of the McCain campaign. Plus, McCain could have pointed out who Barack Obama was/is without going all “un-civil” on him.
“the McCain campaign at times seemed to want to lose nobly ”
I wonder if being a fighter pilot he lacked the scrapping spirit as he pressed a button to drop bombs flying fast and moving on up in the air. And I’ve heard that people are never the same after being tortured. Maybe that’s why he never seemed to come out swinging.
I wonder if the super rich liberals that support all of these changes that have ‘failure’ written all over them according to history will suffer because of the changes. They obviously don’t think their lifestyle will change.
Such an optimist. :)
For a comparable time in history,
try the years between the two
rounds of the World War, when
the Intellectuals were convinced
that their world was worn out,
and doomed: Eat, drink and be merry,
for soon the days of wine and roses
will be over, the kissing will have
to stop, and it will be time to don
the blacked-out sunglasses, so as
not to see the doom approaching.
I loved the post, right up to the very last line. That last line was like a hand grenade.
What was described in the post reminded me of that 1950ish movie ‘The Blob’, slowly engulfing the world, non violent, inexorable, immune to counter attack. Which is why that last line was so upsetting.
This post also brought to mind the stereotypical persona who never leaves home, remains in the home of his (or her) parents. Never marries, never causes any trouble, holds a good job, mows the law, takes care of his mother’s car, helps wash the dishes. Only one thing wrong; stagnation. Never takes a risk and never wins the reward for that risk. Never fails at anything, never learning the lessons of failure. Stagnation.
Whether your society is engulfed by the blob of the collective, or fails to keep up with your competitors, the end result is the same; a footnote in the history books.
Liberalism is a disease which must be eradicated. 229 Days to NOVEMBER 2.
Reduce Government by 3000 PERCENT.
” the McCain campaign at times seemed to want to lose ”
At times? At TIMES!? ALL the bloody time! He’s a Navy Brat Bozo.
16. J.J. Sefton, you said what’s left to say.
It’s over. Even the shouting.
Sorry, Doc, I reached most of these conclusions a couple of years ago. I’m still wondering how much longer it will take for him and the media to admit he’s a marxist.
This is a coup. It has always been a coup. And it will not end well.

I was wanting protection,
From life’s ills,
A Russian told me how to,
Prevent spills.
He said you need a blue roof,
In Russia we paid the mayor,
For not too many rubles,
Our local life was thus: fair!
He said you also need a red roof,
In Russia we paid the President,
Then, for a lot more rubles,
Our lives were more heaven sent!
And, he said, you need a black roof,
In Russia we paid the KGB,
That’s how we insured against ills,
We paid up front for liberty!
Shocked, my American friend?
Well, have you paid a sermonizing moralist for a roof dark grey?
Or have you done good,
For just good’s sake? White roof, or no, brave hearts must pray!
Lately the white roof guarantees,
That you will mostly be hurt,
That’s how it is in this crazy world,
Until the wrong-minded revert!
Much of Western Europe is failing, or has already failed. Eastern Europe, having lived under the disasterous economic policies of socialism/communism is now thriving as capitalism flourishes. Whatever its flaws, capitalism has done more to alleviate human suffering and promote general prosperity than any other economic system ever devised. With the passage of Obamacare, America will devolve into the next Greece. There will be a hierarchy of insulated elites, served by a legion of faceless bureaucrats, who will control every aspect of our lives. Any motivation to work hard and succeed will be destroyed by ruinous taxation. De Toqueville’s prediction that democracy might degenerate into the majority voting themselves ever increasing benefits to be financed by the minority will be unavoidable. Ave atque vale, America. It was fun while it lasted.
b) ennui after 8 years of Republicans helped;
Balderdash, Dr. Hanson. You’re way too kind. It was a wave of public-opinion hate stirred up by six years of a coordinated MSM negative campaign against Republicans in general, and President Bush in particular.
VDH, excellent summation of what the left is and what we face. Bravo!
And, for the vast majority, great comments were posted, too. I don’t remember reading so much good stuff from the commenting group ever before here at PJM.
It’s been said that Barack Obama, not Rush Limbaugh, has done more for the Republican party than any other man today. (BTW, Rush agrees.) If that ironic statement is true, and I believe it is, what more can BO do to advance the conservative, ergo, Republican cause? Because so many current and future voters either don’t know or don’t care about what really works – conservatism, will it take a real meltdown to wake them up? Will the U.S. actually have to declare bankruptcy, in order for it to rise from the ashes, like the Phoenix – and what BO might actually be shooting for, in order to erase the middle class, a la Saul Alinsky? Even if that happens, think Jimmy Carter. After his utterly failed presidency, no Dem should have ever been elected to that high office again, but here we are today with Carter-squared. The battle will never end. The libs, like the communists from which they spring, will keep coming back and coming back, and enough ignorant people will hear their call and vote them in again. Be brave, fellow conservatives, be brave.
Liberalism is a lie. Freedom is truth. Never stop shouting it from the high ground. It is our only chance to defeat the evil that is liberalism. It is a simple message. It will work.
VDH mentioned Warren Buffet, who, for other reasons, is famous for backing the estate tax.
I was recently reminded that Mr. Buffet owns insurance companies that sell life insurance which helps the buyer avoid the tax. Might that not be the real reason he’d engage in such lunacy? And, as far as Bill Gates goes, who also backs the tax, he’s probably just the product of brain shrinkage from a too-long vegan diet.
This week, with the Democratic efforts to “deem” the healthcare colossus into existence, I have begun to understand what the word “tyranny” really means.
I DO take these people seriously. One thing I’ve learned is not to underestimate a fanatic. Just because they couldn’t run a successful lemonade stand doesn’t mean they wouldn’t fill the stockades with dissenters if they thought they could get away with it.
Complacency CAN get you killed.
#31 ~Paules,
At least when the Pharisees of old gave that shekel to the beggar, it was their own shekel. Modern Pharisees blow horns to announce giving away OUR shekels, and when we object, WE are the selfish ones.
I’m sorry —
Don’t be.
The silver lining? At least we get to see the ugliness the left brings when they are in power. Hopefully this leaves a bad taste in a lot of folks mouths for a long time.
Wait for November? Not hardly. Work toward recall elections is beginning.
Really? I thought Obama was just trying to clean up a colossal mess left by 8 years of Bush, aided and abetted by his equally numbnutted Republican cohorts. Oh wait, you guys are the same ones who think science is a vast liberal conspiracy. Figures…..
… the Obamians either have not read history and so do not appreciate how statism/socialism/communism have impoverished all that they have touched…
Of course they have. Only it was the faux history, rewritten in the 1960s, which declared capitalism evil, America a blight on the world, and her Constitution a useless, outdated rag. Our chickens have come home to roost, but I think now it’s time to start making chicken soup.
Today the Congress has money to burn while states all over the country are looking for quarters under the sofa cushions. That is the fundamental problem of which the current shenanigans in D.C. are only a symptom.
There is increasing awareness of the mischief caused by the 17th Amendment (Smitty at The Other McCain, for example). Even if we get a more conservative Congress after the 2010 elections, it will only be temporary unless the fundamental structural problem is resolved. Because senators are no longer elected by and answerable to their state legislatures, they can enact taxes that hoover up huge sums, at the expense of state finances.
Now citizens of responsible states have their pockets picked by the liberal locusts. The only solution is to ensure that each state must fund its own policies. Turning this situation around will start with conservative states like Oklahoma and Texas pushing back with state sovereignty laws and Nullification. It will end when the federal government is once again restricted to its enumerated powers, and the citizens of responsible states like Oklahoma and Texas do not have to pay for the folly that’s destroying states like California and Michigan.
It is really necessary to understand that socialism only can exist by borrowing. Socialism needs always some capitalism around to borrow from. Cuba can only survive with Dollars. Every socialist country that existed in this world could survive more than a few hungry years only by borrowing from the capitalist world. If the capitalist world disappears even the anointed ones in their utopia will have no access to razor blades that cut and toilet paper that don´t cuts. If they kill the capitalist world they also kill their utopia. In Europe and now also in the USA the capitalist auxiliary engine which keeps the whole mess running is in its last gasps. And then. Where will they borrow from? China is not as stupid as the West has been. This whole thing has to collapse. Completely.
Great analysis. I think the leadership, and most Democrats, think they can be kindler and gentler Totalitarians, a Big Brother we will love not fear if we stay connected to reality. ObamaCare is an attempt to establish a new powerful bureaucracy that controls our lives, and Democrats love bureaucracy.
” … or indeed much beyond the metrosexual world in general.”
Bingo. The whole mess is queer.
The fate of the nation depends now on West Point and West Pointers. The queers’ mistake was not taking down the US National Service Academies starting 20JAN09, starting with the nation’s first engineering school and first military academy and the world’s premier leader development institution.
Now it is too late to correct that mistake.
Their contempt for the military character causes, metrosexuals/queers to disregard and thereby disobey the first rule of war.
This is not the first time the nation’s fate has rested on West Point and West Pointers and probably will not be the last. Their job is to win the nation’s wars and the nation now is at war with its queers, “metrosexuals,” more and more daily imported from Middle Eastern and Caribbean countries and having seized the mechanisms of government at the federal and many state and local levels.
Metrosexuals/queers as the true source of the war against the United States is the reality the nation’s self-consciously “modern” self-promoters, the glitterati self-described as “libertarian,” probably will grasp never.
Over my dead body will these elitist bastards take over our country. There are too many Americans who, if necessary, will physically remove the Political BASTARDS from their sinecures in Congress.
If people in the State of Illinois are marching in the thousands for Concealed Carry laws then imagine over 1 Million men and women marching on Washington armed and determined.
How unutterably depressing….
Great read! Happy St. Paddy’s day to VDH and to the best informed readers/commenters on the web! God bless you all!
Dr. Hanson:
Interesting analysis. It would seem that the current attempt to build utopia, the great worker’s paradise, is founded entirely on lies, lies the self-styled elite tell to themselves and lies they tell to everyone else. Among them are these few:
(1) There exists a great cabal of evil businessmen, banks, insurance companies, Republicans, the rich, etc. who exist only to cheat and brutalize the downtrodden.
(2) The pure, noble, altruistic, self-sacrificing champions of the people who oppose such evil are Democrats, university intellectuals, victim grievance groups, race hustlers, unions, ACORN and government employees.
(3) There is a “right” to everything the left desires and such rights are created, administered and dispensed by government.
(4) There exists an unlimited supply of money to fund liberal-created “rights” and entitlements, and government need only more completely squeeze–more and higher taxes–the “other” who has all the money which they are greedily withholding from those who are more worthy, Ie: the downtrodden identified by the elite.
(5) The elite, by virtue of their virtue, their great self sacrifice, their overwhelming burden of caring for the less well off, their god-like moral and intellectual superiority, must be exempt from the laws, the taxes and the effects of their policies that they may continue to act as philosopher-kings for the benefit of the downtrodden.
(6) A single politician can, through their great moral superiority, their super human rhetoric, their blinding intellect, their self-evident coolness, their mushily defined racial authority and their virtual deity, can change the world by their mere existence and utterances.
(7) Government can and must provide for all human needs and is the best possible provider.
Thus do we see President Obama, only yesterday, proclaim that Obamacare is so wonderful that insurance premiums will decline 3000% and everyone will be accordingly given raises! His handpicked crowd, of course, wildly applauded and huzzahed. In this single statement we see all the pathologies of the Left. Since paying 100% less of anything means that you pay nothing at all, it is clear that Obama could not be merely making a mistake with numbers. This is not a politician misspeaking, but revealing his utter contempt for Americans. He now believes, as I suspect he has believed all along, that none of the rules of humanity, of character, apply to him. He can tell any lie, no matter how fantastic, and get away with it. Perhaps he even believes that if he speaks it, it becomes manifest. He is, after all, a god. The media has told us so, and just in time for Easter, the NYT has depicted him in jacket off, shirtsleeve rolled up full rhetorical splendor, superimposed on a cross, the insignificant–in comparison with his glory and majesty–White House, a pathetic symbol of America, not worthy of his magnificence, in miniature at the foot of the cross.
Reality is quite different. Liberals give virtually nothing, individually, to charity while conservatives give billions each year. This is so because liberals believe it is government’s job to give to charity, taking the money for that noble enterprise out of the pockets of others. Liberals care not for the individual, but for designated, currently favored victim groups. Caring for an abstraction is far preferable to caring for actual people, who might crash one’s dinner party or use the wrong fork.
As Margaret Thatcher observed, the trouble with socialism is that you always run out of other people’s money. And so it is with America. We are now seeing that which was once unthinkable: entire states (California, for example), and even America may well go bankrupt and sooner rather than later. There really is not an unlimited supply of the other whose pockets can be picked unto eternity to fund liberal desires.
Government produces nothing, it only takes. Perhaps Obama and his lap dogs imagine that they can do communism right. They can seize the means of production, such as the auto industry, insurance, education, etc. and run it more efficiently than private enterprise. Take the example of the Chevy Volt. CGM execs have admitted that they will lose money on every car they build, a car that because of its technical limitations, will never fill more than a tiny niche of the market, and the government will provide up to $7500.00 of the purchase price of the vehicle. This is a recipe for financial disaster. History is unkind to such conceit and those who ignore history will repeat it, and never in a happy making manner.
Ultimately, the left believes that it can ignore history and reality because it can manufacture its own reality and force everyone to live in it. We need energy, so Obama trumpets wind and solar, energy that cannot–absent immediate discoveries that render all we know about physics and the universe antiquated–come even remotely close to meeting our needs, and simultaneously promulgates policies–while claiming the opposite–that make it impossible to produce the inexpensive, plentiful energy we need from abundant domestic resources.
Ultimately, reality catches up with even the elite, though there will be much suffering before that happens. The only real question left is whether it will be necessary for Americans to return to our founding values, including the understanding that we have the right and duty as Americans to rise up to abolish tyrannical government, a right the founders cherished and enshrined in the First and Second Amendments. Will we have the strength of will, character and intellect of the founders, or have we irredeemably degenerated into the socialist, metrosexual, effete, enervated narcissistic new Obama man?
62. Obviously, just like the ilk you follow, facts just are a bother to you. The republicans had congressional majority for only 6 years (while the country was booming) The democrats then controlled congress from 2006, with your god Obama as one of the Senators. I know this doesn’t fit with what you’d like reality to be, so you omit it. It is also true that the sub-prime mortgage problem was push by ANdrew Cuomo during his stint aat HUD (right, he is ALSO a democrat).
Excellent diagnosis of the degenerate parasites who are destroying our country. It’s a (temporarily softer) form of Communism whom a Cuban refugee once described to me as Capitalism for us(the nomenklatura, the plutocratic lefties,Communism for you (the middle class). This will not stand Dr. Hanson;there will be blood!

IMO the Democrats risk a major tax revolt if they enact ObamaCare without an up or down vote in the House on it. Use of the Slaughter rule would create great disrespect for the law and thereby imperil the voluntary income tax system. Andrew McCarthy at NRO’s Corner pointed out that the “consent of the governed” is at stake here:
http://corner.nationalreview.com/post/?q=NzFjYTQxODU3MGUyZDUyNjY2N2U2NmVmMWExYTU4NjE=
“This is what is happening to the legislative process. Sure, we don’t make lawmakers dot every “i” and cross every “t” every time. But that doesn’t mean we’ve abandoned the right to make them play it by the book when it comes to a controversial matter. When there’s a real dispute, they have to pass the bill the regular, constitutionally mandated way: Both houses on the exact same text, with every legislator accountable for his vote.
If, instead, the legislative process becomes a farce that departs from the constitutional procedures we are entitled to enforce, then it no longer represents the consent of the governed. It is the first American principle that government derives its just powers only from the consent of the governed, and when it takes on a form that becomes destructive of the fundamental rights of the governed, it is no longer legitimate.”
California State Controller John Chiang insisted that the State pay all state income tax refunds on time this year because he knew that another year of delaying payment would get too many Californians to underpay their income taxes so as to ensure that they wouldn’t have any refunds for the State to hold up. This can be done by taxpayers claiming additional exemptions from withholding.
But, as Chiang knew, such tactics if widespread would tube the State’s on-going tax revenues such that it would have to borrow more money during the year in anticipation of a spike of payments around April 15. He ordered prompt refund payments, despite California’s desperate financial problems, to save the state’s voluntary tax system.
But all Americans can do the same (claim lots of exemptions so no income taxes are withheld) with their federal income taxes. Once the federal government is perceived as illegitimate, and particularly when it demands that healthy young uninsureds pay medical insurance taxes, there is at least a possibility of a tax revolt using the present voluntary tax system as a vehicle.
Given that so many Americans are vehemently opposed to ObamaCare that perceived illegitimacy in its enactment, over the objections of what almost every sample shows are about half of the public, I feel there is more than just a mere possibility of a major tax revolt.
And, if one gets going at all, it very likely would quickly snowball because the Obama administration has appointed so many obvious tax cheats, such as Treasury Secretary Geithner, to high office. An attempt by Geithner to persuade people to pay their taxes voluntarily would almost certainly result in more people joining the revolt.
IMO the Democrats risk a major, and successful, tax revolt if they enact ObamaCare by any method perceived as underhanded. Such a revolt may happen anyway, but it would be insane to provoke one by enacting ObamaCare without a vote in the House of Representatives.
The federal government exists by consent of the American people. The Democrats act at their peril if they make it seem illegitimate.
A tax revolt against ObamaCare would be a disaster for everyone save America’s freedom.
The Democrats assume that Americans are obedient subjects, aka Europeans, who will do what they are told. Some terrorists on United 93 found out otherwise on 9/11. Glenn Reynolds’ term for this American trait is “A pack, not a herd.”
We may get a chance to find out how far this will go.
#16 JJF has it right “what will we do about it ?”
The Dems. come up with plan after plan( however underhanded) to transform the economy into their personal socialized utopia. The Repubs, whine, complain and seem incapable to creatively resist, plan a reversal, or generate support for the constitution and capitalism. One would think that the Repubs. actually want the Dem. plan to occur as they too make a living by spending everyone elses money and attending the right schools, and sitting in the Corp boardrooms.
Waiting for the next election is like waiting for the Titanic to finally sink after it has hit the ice. In the mean time Repubs. are scrambling for the political lifeboats “everybody for yourself”. VDH, one more description of the problems will not solve the problems. Perhaps you could start listing the solutions – or would it just be more of ” wait until the next election” chorus. Would also love the many intelligent readers of this column to offer their own solutions vs. agreeing with how wrong Obama and followers are.. 1) How about the Governors of 25 or more states standing on the White House lawn for a week vowing to not cooperate with Obama’s attempted take over. Reclaim States rights. 2) How about working Conservatives going on strike for a month and starve the beast of taxes. #3) How about all Conservatives signing a pledge to vote NO on any incumbent. It seems VDH is ever so busy writing his next column for his next paycheck -Talk about exploiting a tragedy for your own financial gain. Good luck to all.
Excellent column, but we disagree on this final line.
The fact that the nihilist subversives are a bunch of ignorant clowns doesn’t contradict the fact that they are endangering the structure of the economy of America.
They CAN destroy the country, and they will.
If you mean that as “revolutionaries” they are ridiculous I can agree, but history proves that clowns can be deadly dangerous (e.g.: mussolini).
“an announcement that Jerusalem might build some apartments apparently is” This is a crock of shit statement. What kind of an American are you? Israel slapped us in the face when they approved of the houses during our vice presidents visit. They insulted us on purpose. Since when is ok to insult our country like that. It is in our nations best interest for there to be stability in the middle east and a large part of that stability is based on some peaceful existence between the Palestinians and Israel. Also, while it might not be that many homes was a very symbolic gesture, a kind of F-U to the peace talks, as that was one of the main sticking points. Are you more pro Israel than pro America?
I expect the pendulum to swing back, hard. But if the conservatives make the same mistakes as were made under GW, it will swing back to the left yet again.
#6. S.A.C. says
“the number of stupid people has been increasing at a faster rate then not stupid people.”
“one of the negatives of democracy is stupid people can vote”
Are you trying to personally prove this point? You know, you may be individually smarter than a million individuals but you’ll never be smarter than all of them put together. By your moniker, I suspect you’re too young to realize this.
Next time you read or hear the use of “Affordable” in terms of housing, healthcare, insurance or any “essential” goods or services, think of this:
…. TO EACH ACCORDING TO NEED
That is the essence of “Affordable,” that distributions should match needs.
Then you may ask what is the consequence of:
FROM EACH ACCORDING TO ABILITY…
which is necessary to meet “needs;” to provide the “Affordable.”
“Affordable” as a political or social goal is nothing more nor less than taking from some and giving to others; thus raising the question of who decides and how on the selections of “EACH.”
At the risk of sounding like an anti-intellectual luddite I have long had contempt for most of the intellectual elite. I started developing this contempt in my teens when I would read about revolutionary movements around the world seemingly always centered around university students and their professors. It seemed to me even back then, that the educated should be the best equipped to see through the lies that are the hallmark of every leftist, communist regime. And yet they were in the vanguard. And they still are. Such blindness must be willful and tells me that at their core, these intellectuals know exactly what they are doing. And what they are doing is embracing evil.
15. Vivo
There are two types of people in the world. One that classifies people into two types and one that doesn’t.
VDH
You have it nailed almost perfectly, of course. Anyone who pays attention to my comments knows by now that I am a bit fussy about the usage of certain terms and phrases.
I think there are distinct differences between and among “liberals”, “leftists” and “progressives”.
I do not think the definitions are interchangeable, although there may be some overlap in certain specific areas.
But make no mistake who has the helm. Leftists.
As you do, my dear cyberfriend, VDH…I see things through the unique prism of my past experiences. Having read Royko for most of my early political awakening…I see almost all politics with his words still ringing in my ears.
And the Cook County “Clout” system, with a “Boss”…where every tiny detail was managed through an iron fisted patronage system (from getting a job with the City, the County, the Parks, connected construction companies, parking garages, garbage collection, etc)was based upon having a “sponsor”…even getting a 55 gallon drum for putting out your weekly curbside garbage pickup was based upon “knowing a guy who knows a guy”.
The “Lakefront liberals” were Democrats who put up a faux front of “opposition”, but were found to merely wish to tug the “clout” leftward.
And, that is where we are today. Newsweek should put a cover on their magazine “We are all Chicagoans now”.
The hypercontrol over every aspect of our lives is simply a leftist “Clout” play…Nancy Pelosi is a ward boss. Harry Reid is an alderman. You have committeemen, precinct captains and soldiers.
And, it is incumbent upon the “machine” to grab more and more and more things…to control, so that the people are more dependent for their very existence on that machine. If people have to beg for an audience to get a job, or have public services, or win a contract, or get health care, …the “return favor” is unspoken. Votes.
A permanent class of dependents, who vote…and ring doorbells of others to vote.
The “Lakefront liberals” don’t get their hands dirty. You just don’t get invited to the sit on the board of the museums, theaters, etc. You are uninvited to sit at the “cool kids” lunch table.
You can’t get the best seats at any of the events or hobnob with the hoi polloi.
The unions provide the “muscle” if you get out of hand.
Royko would have had a field day with all this. Words mattered to him as well.
I think it is time for all Patriotic Taxpaying Americans to go ON STRIKE. They cannot lock us all up. The support of the Constitution and its original meaning and the AMerican Ideal is worth striking for.God Bless the United States of America and it’s Patriotic Citizens. No Lefty’s need apply
There are two basic types of settled (non-nomadic) societies. 1) Those (quite common) where power resides at the top and is used to regulate the lives of the population, and 2) those (quite rare) where power is vested in the citizenry and temporarily conferred upon administrators by consensus. The former is a bit more stable, but soon becomes rigid and oppressive, the latter is less stable but yields dynamism and innovation driven by an empowered citizenry.
Human history is in large part the story of the shifting tension between these two poles. As we are re-learning, the US is not immune to this dynamic.
The progressive Dems have backed themselves into a lose-lose situation. They have staked everything on healthcare. If it passes (so they reason) all will be well. They will have wedged the door open for more revolutionary ‘change’ and even if they lose seats in November, they will have set the country on its inexorable march towards permanent rule by elite fiat. I beg to differ. They miscalculate the level of indignation they will provoke with their bald-faced trickery and high-handed contempt for the will of the people. That will be their undoing.
I appreciate the title: very clever…
Great article!
Dear BC:
Just can’t let go of Dubya, huh? Life would be a dream, if only……………..Huh? Paradise on earth of only for Bush, huh? You are one sorry bastard. Who’s,gonna pay for you skag when the money runs out?
What we are seeing seems similar to the run up to the Revolutions of 1848 in Europe, where there was an economic crisis starting in 1846. and especially the one in France. But the Second Republic didn’t take long to morph into the Second Empire under Napoleon III.
RE: 79. CRK
On solutions.
First, let’s get this out of the way – there is no magic solution. There is no painless solution. There is no solution that does not involved hard work and sacrifice.
Just like with your kids, tough love is what’s called for. Tough love involves identifying options available to address the problem, as well as identifying the things that do nothing for, or perpetuate, the problem.
And then choosing the best option that gets people doing the things that will solve the problem.
This will require a clear head. It will require making the hard choice – the one that often will take the easy way away from people. To do this there must be clear, unambiguous consequences. If you work towards the solution you get rewarded, and if your work or actions work against the solution you get punished.
Solving our problem will take years. As I said, there are no magic elixers here – you cannot wipe the slate clean and just start over. But you can set the process in motion.
It’s astounding how stupid and ignorant of history most people are. Most cannot see the forest from the trees. They have no clue on how this country rose to great heights, nor any clue about how far we have strayed from the ideas that got us there.
I think lines need to be drawn in the sand. Laws need to mean something. Current over convoluted solutions need to be scrapped and new common sense ones adopted. Government needs to be way downsized. Demands need to be made on citizens. And the free market, with its rewards and punishments, needs to be unleashed.
Enough.
Want to know how bad it’s gotten? Ask yourself how willing you would be to work with the police if you saw someone who had sniped Maxy, or Waxy, or the Baltimore Bitch. I can tell you right now that officially, I wouldn’t have seen a damned thing even if I actually had seen the shooter rise up over the parapet and put six rounds into the target. “Sorry, Officer, I didn’t see anything.”
A government that wants respect has to be worthy of respect. This one isn’t, not in the slightest, and the rot starts at the very top. There isn’t a one of Obastard’s crew whose hand I’d shake, or whose fate I’d bemoan if they were strung up from the nearest tree. Lying, thieving, traitorous criminals, the lot of them.
If they leave peacefully, it will be a miraculous blessing we don’t deserve.

SHALL WE JUST ROLL OVER AND DIE?

What is driving the Democrats today is the same thing that has powered Progressives for more than a century: the drive to undermine the Republic and convert it into a bureaucratic, administrative state.
The health-care bill is precisely what Mark Steyn keeps saying it is — that is, the shortest, quickest way to a permenent, left-of-center government that has its fingers in everyone’s life.
I think that if this Leftist/ Marxist madness isn’t somehow stopped, there is going to blood. There will be chaos not seen since the Civil War.
I am not supporting nor advocating this at all, simply observing the undercurrent of anger and distrust toward Washington in general and Liberal Marxists in particular.
I hope To God I am wrong.
Yes, I’m sure My 63 year old grammar is off, live with it!
What is driving the Democrats today is the same thing that has powered Progressives for more than a century: the push to undermine the Republic and convert it into a centralized state.
The health-care bill is precisely what Mark Steyn keeps saying it is — that is, the shortest, quickest way to a permanent left-of-center government that has its fingers in everyone’s life. For exercising control over people, nothing beats health care. There’s nothing that you or I do in our lives that cannot be brought under the heading of “health care,” one way or another. And that opens the door for government to walk into your life and mess with everything you foolishly believed was personal.
To bring this about this statist transformation, Obama, Pelosi, and their gang will put up with any loss — any, however bad — in this year’s election and that of 2012.
The reason is that if nationalized health-care passes in any form, they will have changed this country forever from a constitutional republic to a beaucratic state. This transformation will finally achieve the century-old dream of all Progressives to bring Americans into conformity with European models of how we “ought” to be.
Right, cfbleachers #87.
Let’s just cut to the chase, Chicago (thug) politics and community organizing instincts directing government at the national level.
Chicago on the Potomac
“I’m sorry — I don’t take seriously much of anything from this wannabe revolutionary bunch.” Neither do I, but the national media, hollywood and the universities do and that is why BO is president and the United States is marching towards socialism.
Oh, where can I move to? Australia perhaps!
ALL PATRIOTIC AMERICANS HAD BETTER WAKE UP ‘CAUSE OUR WAY OF LIFE IS BEING SERIOUSLY, SERIOUSLY THREATENED BY BHO AND COHORTS.
GOVERNMENT WANTS TO CONTROL EVERYTHING: HOW MANY BABIES TO HAVE, WHEN AND WHERE TO STUDY, WHEN AND WHERE TO HAVE ESS EHH EXX, HOW MUCH SALARY AND BONUSES TO RECEIVE, WHAT CIGARETTES TO SMOKE AND SOUR WHISKEY TO DRINK, IN FACT; THE WHOLE KIT AND CABOODLE !!!
THE RICH AND THE MIDDLE CLASS WILL BE TAXED TO DEATH AND THE POOR WILL RECEIVE ENTITLEMENTS FROM CRADLE TO GRAVE. HOW IDEALISTIC AND HOW COMMUNISTIC !!!!!!!
WHAT TO DO? GO FIGURE. ACTIVELY PARTICIPATE IN LEGITIMATE PROTESTS AND PEACEFUL RALLIES. MAKE NOISE AND LET THEM KNOW THAT WE DON’T LIKE WHAT THEY’RE DOING TO US.
LET THE ELOI KNOW THAT WE REFUSE TO BE THEIR MORLOCKS ANYMORE. FIGURATIVELY SPEAKING, THEY’VE EATEN MUCH TOO MUCH OF US AND WE CAN SMELL IT IN THEIR BREATHS.
ENOUGH IS ENOUGH IS ENOUGH !!!!!!!
79. Yes, we do need to talk about solutions, but we need to continue to discuss reasons and a basic philosophy so we can both convince others, and remember what we are fighting for and where we are going.
As to your suggestions:
1. Governors on the lawn would make a good photo op, but that battle has to be fought in the courts- if possible with good state laws that raise the issues. (And, if you vote for no other Repub., vote for GOP Senators who will not vote for liberal Fed judges!)
2. Interesting idea, tax strike. It’d take a pretty large number with the guts for it, to include forcing the Gov’t to go to trial on each case. (plus a support network to feed their families when funds are frozen, and volunteer lawyers)
3.Don’t care for this. We might be better off with the 1st 450 names out of the New York..er,Austin, phone book, but they might not get much done. Just dealing with the bureucracy takes some experience, and I wouldn’t want to lose Brownback just to get rid of Boxer. The electorate can make those decisions.
And an idea of my own, from some time back- 34 states calling for a wide open Constitutional Convention, original format (ie. number of delegates up to each state, chosen by their own rules- have to be a max set on that; one vote per state; no specific time limit, or a long one.
Just having a half dozen states start consideration would wake up a few folks, and might really invigorate the discussion on the basics.
For what it’s worth, I’d expect a lot of sound and fury, and eventual agreement on a few good amendments.
We need to have some brave blogger pick a day when the weather is likely to be nice in DC and put out a call for all of us, everyone who cares about this, to go to DC and make some damn noise.
We need pitchforks. We need tar. We need feathers. We need TEN MILLION PEOPLE howling people in one spot to show these sonsabitches who is boss and who ain’t gonna take it any more.
It has to be a few weeks out to give time to organize and for people to plan; this thing Tuesday did not have enough notice.
I suggest April 15, Tax Day. Who will put out the call?
Dr. Hanson ends with, “I’m sorry — I don’t take seriously much of anything from this wannabe revolutionary bunch.” I take these people at their word — and seriously…I’ve never had a fantastic job and was never paid well, but health benefts were always the bright spot in a nasty corporate world. And now the Obamatics are going to take that away and charge me dearly for the their pleasure. The elected class has now engendered such seething hatred the likes of which they have never seen from millions of people like me. I take them darned seriously, and I also take seriously the millions to whom they will soon grant amnesty who will very quickly sink their own teeth into a government health care system that I will pay for. Perhaps seething hatred is not a strong enoug term.
17. BackwardsBoy:
Spot on again, Dr. Hanson.
There is no longer any doubt in my mind that our country is purposely being destroyed by Obama, Reid, Pelosi and a host of other “progressives” with whom we’re painfully familiar.
The real question is why?
The answer is simple. To achieve their utopia they must destroy the existing order. Of course most of them are rich enough (or have enough of a sense of entitlement) that they can remain mostly unaffected by the destruction period.
Marxist in the 50s/60s became very disturbed that the predicted social revolution was not occurring. Therefore, they decided they had to generate the social revolution through crises as opposed to waiting for a revolution.
Also, keep in mind many of these people were taught by those in the pay or ideological grip of the USSR. So this Leftist ideology is like some Star Trek doomsday machine continuing to destroy the enemies (the US) of those who made it (the USSR) long after the war and the machine’s creators have passed away.
Richard W. wrote:
I have known many such Red Diaper Trust Fund Babies. They usually inherit wealth, never work a day in their lives, aside from sitting on a board or hosting a charity event.
That appears to be the Achilles heel of Western capitalism, doesn’t it? The founder of a successful business might have been a brilliant, hardworking entrepreneur, but the man’s grandson, the beneficiary of an expensive education and trust fund money, is likely to be a limo leftist. He never had to work for his money and he feels guilty about that while at the same time he is utterly ignorant of the engines of wealth creation. He doesn’t know any average Americans – only other trust fund babies and the underclass (who clean his house, cook his food and -if he’s into slumming – provide him with drugs). He romanticizes the underclass, particularly minorities, who seem much more colorful and vital and “macho” than he and his pampered metrosexual friends do. Ordinary middle class people are, to his eyes, plain and drab and dull and he has no knowledge of their work or lives, nor does he wish to. A person sheltered from the necessity of having to work for a living has no sympathy with those who do. Is it really any wonder that rich trust funders are easy marks for left-wing professors?
This is the final assault of the Bureaucratic empire. Since the Civil Service reform of 1880 the agents of Govt bureaucratic expansion, hiding behind the “enlightened” political philosophy called “progressive-ism” have been practicing mission creep. We hear a lot about the “evils” of the spoils systems but it put the politicians in charge of patronage and they were able to fire the other side’s guys and put in theirs. This ensured some control over our public servants and kept out a lot of careerists.Currently the bureaucracy drives the politicians and it MUST be the other way around. A quick fix for a lot of our problems would be the immediate repeal of the Civil Service Act of 1880.
“The consent of the governed” has been violated by these Marxists. We haven’t heard the last from the governed. This is totalitarianism. It looks like the duck, quacks like the duck, and is the duck.
Dr. Hanson, as usual, gets to the heart of the matter then does a precise dissection accompanied by clear explanations of the pathologies he exposes.
It amazes me how those who claim to be intellectually and morally superior work so hard to avoid taking credit for their actions. We now have the president who regularly voted ‘present’ leading his entire, deeply concerned, oh so intellectual, party to record highs of unconstitutional behavior in an attempt to avoid having to take credit for the great good they’re doing for their serfs. Of course they feel superior, they’ve retained power for decades in spite of regularly being ‘forced’ to act in the best interests of the democrat elite while ignoring those they represent.
I hope those who participate in the current fraud are finally given full credit for having violated both the Constitution and their oath of office by doing so. Unless and until the democrat party is destroyed as a national political party, this country cannot possibly recover from the decades of damage they’ve done. Anyone who continues to support the democrat party in any way is admitting that they, too, have no use for our Constitution. The democrat party is now and always has been the party of slavery, secession, civil war, KKK terrorism, Jim Crow laws, Eugenics laws, anti-Semitic immigration laws in response to Nazi Nuremburg laws, Stalin worshippers, the welfare plantation system, vote fraud, voter intimidation, and the eugenics driven mass murder of minority infants. By their current actions they are now openly admitting that they are also the party of democrat agenda above not only the Constitution but even above a citizen’s right to live if their appointees deem that citizens’ life to be unworthy of living.
Whether basing their claim to superiority on Marxist platitudes as they presently do, or on the color of their skin in as they have in the past, the democrats have always claimed superiority and the right to control or even enslave the majority of the population for their own benefit. The democrat party has to finally be thoroughly and permanently destroyed as a national political party the way it should have been for continuing to ignore the Constitution in order to return to feudalism and the enslavement of the majority in spite of having lost the Civil War democrats started.

Professor Hanson might have added, as an example, that William Ayers is scheduled March 26 to return to Pittsburgh, the city whose Gulf Building his Weather Underground terrorist group bombed on June 13, 1974. This time, instead of having a note of warning, addressed to the Associated Press, tucked under the seat of a phone booth on Fort Duquesne Boulevard and keeping himself out of sight in cowardly fashion while the bomb ticked down to detonation, Mr. Ayers will be the invited guest of — Professor Hanson would not be surprised — the Council of Graduate Students in education at the University of Pittsburgh and keynote speaker at the council’s spring conference.
How grotesque, you say. Why would Pitt graduate students want this miscreant to address them? Apparently Mr. Ayers’s views align with the council’s mission “to represent the academic, social, and professional interests of graduate students in (Pitt’s) School of Education.” But surely the adults running the university will cancel the invitation, won’t they, ask the taxpayers whose money helps to fund Pitt. With a tip of the hat to Professor Hanson, let’s listen to university spokesman John Fedele explain why no adults dare stand between the terrorist and the university elites who yearn to learn from bomber Bill: “In terms of furthering people’s educational horizons, there is wide latitude given,” Mr. Fedele told the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review. (Link below)
And so, another generation of educators prepares to emerge from the ivory tower to teach ensuing generations how to think. What’s the moral of the story, you wonder. Responsible parents whose children want to earn degrees in education should guide them to private, upright and inexpensive Grove City College or Hillsdale College. The graduate education majors at taxpayer-subsidized Pitt are, like wow, into some really weird sh-t, man. (www.pittsburghlive.com/x/pittsburghtrib/news/pittsburgh/s_671976.html)
Essential vdh
vdh you had better take it seriously. “The gate to the cage is open and the monkeys are now running the zoo.”
When the lights go out dependent Americans, that includes BHO, Geitner, Van Jones, Biden, Pelosi and the Dem and Repub idiots— will not know what to do nor will America survive until the real Americans left, the ones that even now make America work begin again what was started in 1776. Can the idiot armchair Utopian BS of communism actual take away a free society where the individual remains supreme. If it does it will be temporary and could be bloody which is what history tells us.
I couldn’t agree more. I just hope Obama’s Reign of Terror has a better ending: one without bloodshed and a return to a stable Republic.
81. I don’t regard it as an insult to America, just a rebuke to the arrogant fools currently running our government. Obama needs to be brought down about ten pegs, and Biden needs to grow a brain.
Paules:
Your sentence “Leftist elites remind me more each day of the scribes and Pharisees of old”
I trust that your contempt for the Pharisees is based largely on the Prophets through the prism the New Testament.
Judaism regards Prophets as great visionaries but acknowledges that their idea of social justice is Utopian. What party do you think Isaiah, Jeremiah, Ezekiel would vote for?
By expressing contempt for the Pharisees you are actually expressing contempt for modern Jews. We modern Jews are all Pharisees.
“After the destruction of the Second Temple in 70 CE the Pharisaic sect was re-established as Rabbinic Judaism — which ultimately produced the normative traditional Judaism which is the basis for all contemporary forms of Judaism except for the Karaites”. Wikipedia
It appears the first to say “I call” on Obamian BS is from abroad – Benjamin Netanyahu. When instructed to roll over and lie down in negotiating a peace process with the Palestinians – those supported by Iran who’s stated objective is to anhialate Israel of the face of the earth – Netanyahu’s answer is unequivocal.
The American elite brigade, lead by joltin’ Joe B., and lady Hillary lording over their “friends” to just be nice, took one in the eye.
It will be interesting to see if this leads to more exposure of the elites back on home soil in their ‘do as you’re told – and you’re going to like it’ approach to governing.

So good to see you back! YAY! Donna, you paint morsels of words I can so fast agree with on silhouette sentence streams that roll off my own mind’s eye’s tongue that leave my primitive palette of lizard brain imagination slightly tongue-twisted and envious that I cannot shine so brightly as Donna V., who paints her phrases so much clearer than me! :)
Earl Bohn @111. I wonder how much press william ayers speaking engagement will generate!?
And, what the hell happened to the system of justice in the ’60s that this guy is a free man? Terrorist acts and bombings got a free pass if you could say you had a point to make about right and wrong!?
And now, an invitation to speak at an “institution of higher learning” to “the educated” … Disgraceful.

I, for one, tend to consider that using our money for terrorism, killing Americans or dancing on 9/11 are _much_ worse slaps. Let’s have Palestinians refund US to the last cent since 1948, NOW!!!!!!!!
111. Earl Bohn:
Maybe they invited Ayers to talk because he has a PHD in education and writes books about education and it is a conference about education. Are people not capable of change in your mind? Not everyone has a perfect youth, some of us make mistakes. However, our system is based upon a person being able to repay the community and move on with their life. This man has done that.
Wall Street Journal columnist Thomas Frank praised Ayers as a “model citizen” and a scholar whose “work is esteemed by colleagues of different political viewpoints.” [68]
To deguello and the others: yeah, right, let’s just forget about Bush. Just because he spent 8 years letting the economy become a corrupt game of Jenga, blew trillions of dollars trashing the wrong country that also cost hundreds of thousands of lives at the minimal, and let a good chuck of our military support get contracted out, and that a good chunk of Obama’s time has been sucked up dealing with all that, it’s time to move on, nevertheless, and pretend it never happened, no? Gawd, spare us from right wing logic…..
Dr. Hanson poses the rhetorical question: “Where do these ideologies derive?”
The short answer is that they owe their pedigree mostly to bad French and German philosophers over the last 300 years. One could pursue their roots back to competing schools of philosophy in ancient Greece, but that’s an exercise for readers perhaps better versed in those matters than I.
But I will say this: the same ideas that have animated the last centurys worst mass murderers now have a happy home in the White House. Most of the liberal cheerleaders of this regime would not deign to be so smug if they understood what that portends for them and their ostensibly short, brutal and nasty future.
It always did confuse me that someone like John Kerry or Ted Kennedy could run for office on the pretext that they are just like one of the little guys. They convince many Americans of this and then fly away in their personal Gulfstream or then go sailing in their J-Class off the coast of Martha’s Vineyard.

There is no longer any doubt in my mind that our country is purposely being destroyed by Obama, Reid, Pelosi and a host of other “progressives” with whom we’re painfully familiar.
The real question is why?
Machiavelli, advisor to Florentine princes and tyrants had this to say when it came to conquering those who lived in relative freedom:
“When cities or provinces have been accustomed to live under a prince… they do not know how to live in freedom… and a prince can win them over with greater faculty and establish himself securely. But in republics, there is greater life…they do not and cannot cast aside the memory of their ancient liberty, so that the surest way to conquer them is to lay them waste.”
–This, from Machiavelli’s most famous work, The Prince
So don’t look now, but we’re all living in what’s left of a seriously weakened Constitutional republic in which the collapse of the ideas underlying individual liberty is very far advanced.
Take a good long look at what’s happening now in America. Then dare to turn around and take another look. If what they’re saying doesn’t square with what they’re doing; if it looks like there’s an concerted effort to destroy our once Constitutional Republic and replace it with… something else – then you’re probably right. None of what’s happening today makes any sense unless you look at it that way – and then it makes a perfectly clear and terrible sort of sense, doesn’t it?
By every measure of reason, this regime is working to destroy our republic for their own ends. Even at its worst, America with all its faults, is a paradise compared to the concentration camp culture of the Gramscian, Machiavellian Marxists who have gotten the upper hand today.
Here’s what the monsters – yes, monsters – in the White House envision:
Most of us dead. The rest of us in chains.
Does that sound a tad, well, extreme? Not really. At one time or another, they’ve said as much. It’s embedded in the pedigree of their ideas. And, it’s been done. Over and over again. History is my witness.
You all know that there is only one way this can end.
Through all of this, another word bites the dust.
elite
• noun 1 a group of people regarded as the best in a particular society or organization.
There is nothing ‘best’ about the “Red Diaper Trust Fund Babies … … usually inherit wealth, never work a day in their lives, aside from sitting on a board or hosting a charity event.”
Elite, is Victor Davis Hanson, and most of the individuals commenting on his articles.

Brian N.: what an unmitigated load of braindead piffle you’ve unloaded here. No surprise that your heart bleeds for an unrepentant terrorist who “youthful mistakes” include attempted murder. You’re a perfect example of the sort of elitist VDH is talking about in this article – a person with limitless indulgence for leftist “idealists” and limitless contempt for ordinary people. Your admiration for Ayers, a man who is on record as wishing to kill 25 million of his countrymen, tells me your moral compass is nonexistent. As for Frank, he’s the WSJ’s resident clown, a man whose nonsensical rants cause much mirth in the comments section of the WSJ. I don’t bother reading his columns anymore; it’s much more fun to just read the comments, as people much more intelligent and erudite than Frank routinely rip his pitiful screeds to shreds.
Well, your day in the sun is coming to an end. Reality is conservative, the social welfare state is unsustainable (and is beginning to crash in Europe even as I type) and your imagined Utopia will never come to pass.
David Sheedy
VDH and most of the people commenting here would agree that the laws should first not infringe on our rights and then should represent popular will.
How exactly is that “elitist”? Please do explain.
Dear Brian N:
I don’t usually carry on a dialogue with postings, but in this case, perhaps a bit of public service is in order. Bill Ayers is not merely someone who had a “troubled” youth, but a vicious terrorist and murderer, who, through mistakes on the part of the government, was not prosecuted for his crimes. Ayers, then, said “guilty as sin; free as a bird.” More recently, within the last few years, he has been photographed on a magazine cover gleefully stomping on an American flag, and when asked if he had regrets about his “youthful indiscretions,” he replied that he felt that he didn’t do enough. Most people would likely not see this as remorse.
Regarding his career in education, there are two types of educators: Those who care, first, last and always about teaching kids as well as possible and those who are dedicated to political-socialist–indoctrination at the expense of actual education. Ayers is a leader of the latter category. As such, anyone inviting him to speak on educational issues says a very great deal about their own political leanings and a very great deal about their lack of concern for actual education.
Ayers was and remains terrorist scum. No decent human being should abide him or those like him.
You are counting the challenges, but surely you of all people remember Sir Winston Churchill?
As for me, I remain unconvinced that this may not mark the watershed moment when ordinary Americans–the undoctrinated, “uneducated” Americans–reject, root and branch, the imbecility being foisted on them.
Virtually alone among industrialized democracies, we continue to breed, to have children. And a core part of having children is caring for them, worrying about them, PROVIDING for them.
In the end, my solid conviction is that there can be only death and victory. The people who feel what we are doing is wrong, will fight. The people who can dissect this abomination, root and branch, can show where they fail, according to their own approximately announced goals.
Why be pessimistic? We all die, my friend. It is an interesting time when we get to care so deeply death is an eventually possible outcome.
Press on. That’s my own firm intention. Press on.
I have, it should be said, used Farragut for my avatar for some time.
thank you Dr. Hanson for all you do.
If anyone is acting elitist, it’s conservatives. Sayingg things like “liberalism is a mental disorder” proves that you think you’re superior to liberals. In fact, just by calling liberals elitist proves that you are elitist, because you believe that you are superior.
We should always try to help the poor. In the words of David Bowie, “loves such an old fashioned word, and love dares you to care for the people on the edge of the light and love dares you to change our way of caring about ourselves this is our last stance, this is our last stance. This is ourselves under pressure”. More importantly, Jesus said you should always help the less fortunate.
I am currently attending one of those “elite institutions” where we are learning all about the EVILS American capitalists and men like Ronald Reagan have rained down on the “oppressed.” Interestingly, the oppressed are the only ones getting grants and stipends, but I digress. When I dared to question the “facts” being presented in a class I was accused of being “culturally insensitive.” Uh-huh…
NOTE to Parents: Check out where your hard-earned tuition money is going, and what HOGWASH it is supporting. INDOCTRINATION is happening in classrooms as we speak…

The answer to your question is to be found in David Horowitz’s and Richard Poe’s book ‘ The Shadow Party: How G eorge Soros , Hillary Clinton and the Sixties Radicals Seized Control of the Democratic Party ”
Chapter 5 ( page 67 )
Inside Soros
George Soros was not speaking idly when he told an audience at the London School of Economics that he meant to “puncture the bubble of American supremacy.” His Shadow Party is funding and facilitating a national movement that could very well achieve that result. By following the same game plan that toppled Nixon and undermined US military efforts in Vietnam three decades ago, Soros and his dream team may well succeed in their goal of causing history to repeat itself. It may be appropriate, at this point, to ask the question: What’s in it for Soros himself?
According to Soros, all of his political and philanthropic activities are directed towards one goal—fostering what he calls the “open society.” The term was coined in 1932 by the French philosopher Henri Louis Bergson. Bergson defined as “closed” those societies whose moral code is tribal and chiefly concerns the good of the tribe itself. Those societies which base their morality upon “universal” principles, which seek the good of all mankind, Bergson defined as “open.” Bergson himself converted from Judaism to Catholicism on the grounds that Christianity is “open” whereas Judaism is “closed.” Subsequently, the Viennese-born philosopher Karl Popper took Bergson’s concept a step fur¬ther. Popper argued that even Christianity is insufficently “open” because it excludes who do not embrace its beliefs ——– “
Wonderful insight. Thank you professor. Once again we are reminded that we Americans are decended from heros and not sugarplums that melt in the rain. It is the time to retire the tired McCain-like Senators and Representatives of RINO-stripe and take back both houses with men and women of conservative principles and action. Yes DS, “Elite” is VDH and wouldn’t we be in better shape today in America if we had “elite” like him representing us in Congress and the Presidency? Hope is what we have.
There has been a gradual weakening of the American character that has come as we got wealthier and life got easier – and nowhere on earth has there been a half century run like we’ve seen in America.
And what does an easy life bring? The old values no longer apply. The idea of being ‘cruel to be kind’ (school of hard knocks) is gone because it’s not needed. The idea that some will come up short in life can be discarded because there’s enough wealth to spread around.
Basically, we’ve all grown accustomed to what I call the psychological safety net – virtually everyone ‘knows’ it’s there, and so we are not constrained as much as we used to be by the fear of falling or failing.
Our current situation didn’t happen simply because we have bad politicians. The politicians we have (and voted in) grew out of this same soil just described. There are merely a reflection of where we’ve come as a society.
I imagine in the old days that failure, or the poor house, loomed large for most people. There was no safety net except for family – and often that wasn’t much. So folks naturally took more self responsibility being that there weren’t many alternatives.
I think it will take having our collective faces rubbed in the mud for us to see the light – to begin the change of character so needed. Yes, there are many left who still possess the old values, but that percentage has been dropping and I think we’re seeing the tipping point as a society. I think we’re running on fumes trying to prolong our safety net society, but I do think change is coming – not because we’ll happily accept what’s good for us, but because the money is running out.
As Warren Buffett says about investing, we’ve had a hell of a party, but the clean up and headache are just starting to be felt.
When will people realize that there are only THREE types of communists:
1) Evil plotters,
2) Dupes, and
3) Victims.
When it is implemented, most of the type 1 and all of the type 2 become type 3. The few remaining become the overlords. This is a well established, historical fact. We desperately need to expose the type 1′s and educate the type 2′s before it is too late. A good way to point this out to people is to tell the three types and ask them “so which do you think Obama is?” :-)
VDH – excellent article (as always). Thank you. Ward Dorrity (comment 125) – there are actually two ways this can end. Our options come from a song by The Clash – Guns of Brixton:

How come it was bad for Bush to waste”Trillions” on war,but OK for Obama to ramp up the useless war in Afghanistan, and with PC engagegement rules that are needlessly killing our soldiers? The corrupt “game of Jenga”as you describe the economy before Obama raised unemploymnet to 10%+ is what Barney Frank,Obama, Dodd, and their corrupt leftist plutocratic masters in Wall st. played when they handed out welfare mortgages. You and your fellow lame brain skells never mention this because ,thanks to them, you got to move into living quarters posher than the dumpsters, gutters, parks, and bridge overpasses you used to infest. Obama has spent a larger “chunk” of his time taking air force one on celebrity photo op trips to NY,hiring expensive chefs, and a huge makeover staff to turn his vicious, butt-faced wife into some sort of glamor queen-(talk about turning a sows ear, into a silk purse )than he has trying to take care of the nation’s problems. Now go to the clinic and take your penicillin before Obama care rations it!
Dear Prof. Hanson —
A question for a historian. There’s a rumor that Tea Party people might fly the US Flag upside-down on the March to Washington, this weekend. Web sources claim that’s a recognized maritime distress signal, and appropriate only under conditions of real distress at sea. I don’t know if this is being debated by the marchers right now, but I’d be interested in your thoughtful opinion.
Yours,
Jim Lewis
#126 Sheedy – The correct word we seek is “Aristocrat”. It carries the full connotation of what we perceive and what “they” want to be. The New Aristocrats.
#121 Brain N – No, Ayers has not moved on. Even in recent interviews, he expressly states he has no regrets. He evinces no remorse. Forgiveness and second chances require humility and penitence.
#81 Brian N – The Israelis announced that apartments would be built in Jerusalem in 2-3 years time. This is stage four of seven in the process. Furthermore, this is specifically allowed in the agreements signed. They agreed not to build settlements in the West Bank, but were given an express okay to build in Jerusalem.
But what if it were a slap in the face. do you not expect a pushabck after all the times this administration has slapped them in the face? No one else fears or respects America, anymore. Wherefore should the Israelis?
The Israelis apologized publicly for any perceived slight, but this administration, with the exception of Joe Biden, chose to use this as a terrible offense, instead of reacting with grace towards an ally.
The thugs are in the Whitehouse.
Why don’t you say that Obama&Co. are the new American version of bolshevik communists? It is true. All the tactics and purposes are the same kind, differing only in how much they think they can get away with at the time. In other words, in the amount of implicit violence (force of law) instead of actual violence necessary at the time.

You make an excellent point,in that they must be taken seriously. But, what can I do? Vote? Pfffffffffft. It really seems hopeless now. Let’s not fool ourselves and sugar coat the issue. Our nation’s traditions, values, culture, have changed and continue to change, for the worse. It’s too late. The spoiled cadre is ruling now.
Dr. Hanson’s most poignant statement in this article is: “the present attempt to remake America is the effort of the liberal well-to-do — highly educated at mostly private universities, nursed on three decades of postmodern education, either with inherited wealth or earning top salaries, lifestyles of privilege indistinguishable from those they decry as selfish, and immune from the dictates they impose on others.
Such are basically the profiles of the Obama cabinet and sub-cabinet, the pillars of liberalism in the Congress and state legislatures, the public intellectuals in the universities and foundations, the arts crowd, and the Hollywood elite. Let us be clear about that.”
My only difference is I feel it is too late. This festering bunch of spoiled rotten children have the power now. I fear health care will pass. And with it, the nation will take the decisive step to the left, and will keep walking in that direction until it reaches the cliff, to it’s own self destructive inevitable conclusion. Just like the National Socialists, Fascists, Communists, and two-bit dictators. The American Leftists want their shot at socialist utopia, they feel they will get it “right”..

115. Yes, and you are apostates, too! I can’t say that Isaiah would vote Republican, for indeed, the Republican party has done many wicked and cowardly things, but he would surely berate the Democratic party for being evil! Clinging to the perverse teachings of the Pharisees only proves that 1900+ years of exile has taught the Jewish people nothing- you are still the persecutors of the prophets! Nevertheless, the Lord will wipe away all your ungodliness, but not for your own sake. No, He will do it for His own sake. Repent of your lawlessness. Then you shall see the Lord’s Salvation, when you repent and call on His Name. As long as you claim to be righteous, you will remain wicked. Israel is no blameless Servant; she is a harlot whom the Lord cursed for her harlotry, yet He shall still take her back, as Hosea prophesied. So bring an end to the exile, and return to the Lord who gave you life. Listen to these words and understand, so that you may turn and be saved. Your eyes have been made cloudy, but they can be made clear; your ears have been made dull, but they can be restored; your heart has been made sluggish, but it can be made vigorous.
The only real question : what is true? Don’t assume you now.
For the last several years, Sean Hannity and the Freedom Alliance “charity” have conducted “Freedom Concerts” across America. They’ve told you that they are raising money to pay for the college tuition of the children of fallen soldiers and to pay severely wounded war vets. And on Friday Night, Hannity will be honored with an award for this “Outstanding Community Service by a Radio Talk Show Host” at Talkers Magazine’s convention.
But it’s all a huge scam.
According to its 2006 tax returns, Freedom Alliance reported revenue of $10, 822, 785, but only $397,900–or a beyond-measly 3.68%–of that was given to the children of fallen troops as scholarships or as aid to severely injured soldiers.
Freedom Alliance’s 2007 tax returns aren’t much better. Out of $12,459,317 it raised that year, only $895,347–or just 7%–went to seriously wounded troops and scholarships for fallen troops. 53% went to expenses, including $1,464,627 in postage and $1,151,428 in printing. $604,995 went to “professional fees” and “consultants.” Out of millions paid for Freedom Concert tickets and raised in fundraisers by Hannity listeners, only $596,500 went to college scholarships for soldiers who died in battle, and only $299,897 went to horribly injured troops. 208 student children of the fallen got an average of $2,868 apiece for tuition, though many got only $1,000 or less. 382 soldiers with serious injuries got an average of $785 each.
I went to my Republican County convention today as a delegate – And guess what happened? Republicans voted DOWN a resolution that stated that all Republican candidates would have to pledge to “work towards eliminating property taxes”. Yes, you did read that correctly. It was my REPUBLICAN county convention, in a very Republican county in Texas, filled with a bunch of delusional collectivists that think they are conservative. They actually think they are “great Americans”, conservative Americans. These are the “RED TEAM can do no wrong” Republicans. — Irony: “red team” has become a very fitting description of the Republican party.
My point — WE wouldn’t know our enemy if it came up and spit in our face! It appears that the Red team/Blue team (left/right)paradigm has got you all by the balls. OUR own freakin’ party has become full blown leftist in its actions, just to the right of Stalin! And yet we can’t even seem to place blame where it belongs – BOTH PARTIES have betrayed America!!! Its Not JUST the evil dems! The acceptance of Collectivism has infiltrated the minds of most ALL Americans. Along with the (media driven) propagation of the left/right paradigm – which holds good people and their ideals hostage.
If you doubt me I encourage you to read the anti-federalist papers, the federalist papers, the D of I, the Constitution, random letters from most any of our founders, and the Communist manifesto. — Then do a comparison/contrast study of ANY republican’s voting record. What you will find is disgusting.
Whats really telling is the numbers votes (by percentage) that support the TEN PLANKS of the Communist Manifesto.

Subject: Confederacy of Fools
“The danger to America is not Barack Obama but a citizenry capable of entrusting a man like him with the presidency. It will be easier to limit and undo the follies of an Obama presidency than to restore the necessary common sense and good judgment to a depraved electorate willing to have such a man for their president. The problem is much deeper and far more serious than Mr. Obama, who is a mere symptom of what ails us. Blaming the prince of the fools should not blind anyone to the vast confederacy of fools that made him their prince. The republic can survive a Barack Obama, who is, after all, merely a fool. It is less likely to survive a multitude of fools such as those who made him their president.”
Sometimes VDH gets it, sometimes he don’t.
It befuddles me why he continues to ascribe noble intent to the street scum masquering as ivy league’ers. It’s about power baby. That’s it. They want it and they want it forever. This is the best chance they have had in 200 years.
Noblesse Oblige? Bull. He gets it right that their po’ed at shop owners who make more than they do, but he doesn’t understand that the hatred is INTENSE. They want to show us, by golly, who the bosses OUGHT to be.
And why does VDH even discuss the idea of killing the golden goose. They could care flipping less. There was alwaysy blood for Lenin and Stalin to squeeze, and there will always be blood for these suckers to squeeze. They’re not worried about living hand to mouth when the yoke is firmly in place. Not worried at all.
I’ve said it before, and i’ll say it again. There has been a class of people ever since the American Revolution who wanted to get the old aristocracies back. They’ve been scheming and connniving for 2 and a half centuries. The thugs in Washington are their descendents. Now they play by the rule book of Marx and Lenin, modified by Alinsky. But it’s still about just one thing. And it’s not their love for the disadvantaged little people. It’s about them getting their feet on our necks. Like it was in 1775, and like they want it to be again.
The change in the mental habits of Romans from Sulla to Augustus made the Republic impossible. Same here. The kind of people which are necessary to inhabit a free, prosperous Republic are very small minority of Americans. Most Americans wish for big-man (duce, leader, furhrer, general secretary) style politics, where wealth, fame and power are dispensed by the state. All their eyes are on the influential of Us, We, Them, and People; only they matter. The Bolivarization of America which began with FDR is now complete. War, poverty, and decline are inevitable. The old ideas cannot return.
#162 SKWEEZITS:Nice attempt to SKWEEZE out alie;now go back to your face, you might successfully squeeze out the pus that is pressing on your brain!
I want to believe that all is not lost and I harken to Gen Grant’s response to Gen Sherman at the Battle of Shiloh. After being routed on the first day of battle by the Confederates, Sherman remarked “Well, Grant, we’ve had the devil’s own day of it haven’t we?” Grant replied “yes… lick them tomorrow, though.”
So while we’ve had the devil’s own day on Obamacare, we’ll lick them in November.
I imagine in the old days that failure, or the poor house, loomed large for most people. There was no safety net except for family – and often that wasn’t much. So folks naturally took more self responsibility being that there weren’t many alternatives.
F*ckin? awesome things here. I am very satisfied to see your article. Thank you a lot and i’m looking ahead to touch you. Will you kindly drop me a e-mail?
