Brave New World

February 19th, 2013 - 12:09 am

The New Normal

When did 7.8% unemployment become the new normal? After 49 months above it? What happened to a “jobless recovery”?

Are we always to borrow $1 trillion a year? Will the national debt always rise, never decline? Did $4 a gallon gas become the new normal — a small price to pay for more windmills and solar panels?

Suddenly, college is not the pathway to the upper-middle class, but a risky 50/50 proposition that just as likely can lead to a $100,000 plus, 8% student loan debt, no job, and five years in the parents’ spare bedroom. Who ever objected to tuition climbing at twice the rate of inflation? One day there were sparse dorms, and the next rock-climbing walls; one day deans and provosts who at least taught one class, the next diversity czars with scores of assistants. The more kids can’t pay for college, the more college looks like Disney World.

The new America is a society where 50% pay federal income tax, and for 50% April 15 is an occasion for a tax refund or credit. I grew up with my parents dreading the date; now I see signs offering all sorts of “tax refund” sales. When did disability insurance merely become an extension of unemployment insurance?

There Is No Media

About four years ago, the media just dissipated. Gone, buried. Did we notice our newsreaders are virtual government employees? The media is a Ministry of Truth where spokespeople vie for superlatives — a living “god,”  a man who creates tingles in our legs and is pictured as a “messiah” on our magazines. Each sermon is a new “Gettysburg Address,” each gesture is Lincoln’s, each new Joe Biden or Hillary Clinton part of the new Lincoln’s “Team of Rivals.”

Journalists are now Photoshoppers of news: Guantanamo once bad, now good; we all grew to stop worrying and to love Predators; renditions, the Patriot Act, and preventative detentions must have gone with George W. Goldstein.

Those noisy free-for-all press conferences are now like Xerxes’s court at Persepolis, where toadies compete with kowtows. “Investigative reporting” is how some reactionary, enemy-of-the-people hacks dig up dirt on a progressive like Sen. Menendez or Susan Rice. The video maker sitting in jail and the 16-year-old American who was vaporized were reactionary troublemakers — and that is all ye need to know.

Brave, New World

Panta rhei — “everything is in flux” — Heraclitus says. The world we knew is not the one we wake up to after a short nap. January 2009 now seems like a far-off dream, in a way that 2016 may be a nightmare.

Not all of us were oblivious to the revolutions and to the poison that has been gradually, but ceaselessly introduced into our culture rendering it antagonistic to the American ethos that transformed 13 Colonies into a Super Power and nation unprecedented in the history of mankind. Not all of us were silent while our hollow elected representatives' stood idly by while our federal government and institutions were besieged by the filth that are the forces of progressive collectivism - some of us watched this agonizingly systematic destruction of our republic only then to see it replaced by the arbitrary decree of elitist politicians and un-elected bureaucrats.

"Today, entire notions such as points, plugs, tune-ups, and carburetors have simply quietly passed away for most motorists."

We don't have the right to repair in some places. Even Apple is gluing their products shut. We could soon be like crashed starship survivors worshiping tools that break.

Gotta love all those TV commercials!!!!

I don't owe the IRS over $10,000 that I don't want to pay.
I don't want to scam S/S by claiming I'm "disabled".
I don't have melothesoma, or any other maladay that might be worth millions to some shyster lawyer.
I don't want to skip out on my credit card debt.

The amount of advertising for these "services" seems to indicate that there a pretty large number of people in this fair land who have no moral compass when it comes to feathering their nest by any means necessary.

Our constitution is meant only for a moral and religious people and is wholly inadequate to govern any other. John Adams.

You certainly hit the nail on the head with this article Mr. Hanson. Reading the comments, it amazes me there still are those who think the only way for the Federal government to raise money is to raise taxes. Creating an environment for more production just isn't in the lefty playbook. Having to deal with reality is truly the only answer and it's not going to be pretty.

Dear Mr. Hanson,
Yes, we are getting older and the world is changing. Your piece is quite well written and poignantly expresses your lack of understanding of the forces which got us to where we are. You pose far too many questions to be answered within the confines of this comment page, but here are a few explanations:
1. Why do we have an annual $1 Trillion dollar deficits? Because some idiots believed that we could cut taxes and not pay the piper. Because we decided lower tax rates to 15% on income if it comes from dividends or capital gains, while taxing at 15% to 35% income that is earned by actually creating value to the economy. Because we fell for a snake oil salesman who promised us that if we cut the taxes the spending would follow.

Because we fell for a snake oil salesman who promised us that if we cut the taxes the spending would follow.
2. Lazy Money? Okay, so people who opted for defined benefit retirement instead of 401K sorts of plans ended up doing better. So their predictions about the future were better than those who took 401k plans. And they are the object of your derision why? Because they were smarter investors? Because they did better? That is the way the world works, we place our bets and let the chips fall where they may. Risks and rewards.
3. Them and us? The 47%/50% myth? Okay, I get money back at tax time. But not even close to what I put in. Get it? I overpay tax, effectively giving the government an interest free loan on a few thousand dollars. I get back less than a half of what I put in, but again, only because I overpay. The poor also pay taxes, just not federal income tax. They pay local property tax through their rent, and they don’t get a mortgage deduction. They pay state and local sales taxes in most states. They pay as much as can be expected of them.
4. The end of law? Why don't we enforce the law on illegal immigrants? Because we can't. Because we don't have enough jail space to hold 15 million people, on top of the 3-4 million we already incarcerate. And because ultimately, the average American understands that illegal immigrants provide more to the economy than they take, and the great food is an awesome bonus. And after all, if HSBC is allowed to be too big to prosecute for real crime--laundering money for terrorists, illegal Iranian exports and other murderers, if the bankers and lenders who nearly collapsed the nation through their fraudulent machinations get a pass, doesn't "too numerous to prosecute" seem only fair? Why does Scooter Libby get his sentence commuted? Why does Ollie North get pardoned? Why weren’t you complaining about these outlaws getting off scot free?
5. The New Army. Is every man in the military who is allowed into combat stronger than every woman in the military who is not? Is every such man a better killer than every woman? Are you man enough to go mano-a-mano with some of these tough female soldiers to show us how superior every man is. Read your Plato, this is not a new idea. Go to Israel and talk this nonsense to an all female battalion.
6. No media? Isn't that your fault? Aren't you the media? Aren't you simply complaining that you haven't been able to put forth a view able to attain widespread acceptance? What about FOX News? The bought and paid for organ for the ultra rich capitalist goons who believe in delusions like "starve the beast" and Tea Parties, don't they count? The left doesn't have anything even vaguely equivalent in terms of their singularly one sided, shrill, extreme right wing partisanship.

All too true. And I know far too many people who are content to let it happen around them, without even a whimper, without even permitting a whisper of the reality of today's political world to pass their ears. As long as they have their workaday life, and their tv at night, they are a-ok. Even when their worlds get rocked by something external, they refuse to open their eyes: they are too pious, or too bored, or whatever, to care.

A quote from a novel I read once: "The silent ones in a nation are always a dictator's most useful subjects."

I have to agree.

The last few months have been a slow, tortuous mourning period for me. Don't even want to hang the flag anymore.

True patriotism isn't about who is in the white house. It is a love of your fellow countrymen and women, and a deep concern and care for their well-being. It is about a love and respect for the land.

Ah, gee, thanks for the instruction. The country's going to hell in a handbasket. I don't care anymore. You can do my share of the caring, ok? Dig deep in your pockets, it's going to cost you a lot.
