It’s easy to see why college campuses are on edge after the shooting at Umpqua Community College in Roseburg, Oregon. Authorities thwarted a shooting at Oxford College of Emory University, located east of Atlanta.
A sophomore at the school posted a message on the anonymous messaging site Yik Yak, which read:
“I’m shooting up the school. Tomorrow. Stay in your rooms. The ones on the quad are the ones who will go first.”
Other students passed the message on to police, who investigated. Emory University released a statement to the media:
“Emory University Police arrested an Oxford College student on Sunday, Oct. 11, and charged her with making terrorist threats against the university as a result of a social media message that she posted early this morning.”
Dean Stephen Bowen sent an email to the student body informing them of the threat and reassuring them that the perpetrator had been arrested. Though the school did not release the student’s name, local jail records revealed that the student was 21-year-old Emily Sakamoto.
Sakamoto confessed to sending out the threat and is currently in custody at the Newton County Jail.
