Star Trek’s Sulu put his name on a fundraising pitch for the Democratic National Committee sent out to supporters this afternoon.
“I’m celebrating with the President — want to come?” read the subject line of DNC email from George Takei.
“There’s an idea from Star Trek that I’ve always appreciated: ‘Infinite diversity in infinite combinations,'” Takei wrote. “What this means to me is that, whether out in space or here on Earth, there’s no set prescription for how to live our lives. We are all unique, and we should celebrate our differences.”
“Now, some folks may disagree. They may shake their heads in disapproval or discomfort at all of the beautiful diversity that makes this country great. But when I’m confronted with that kind of close-mindedness, I just look at the incredible progress we’ve made together. Decades of hard work and passion have brought us where I always knew we could go — to a place where love is love, and marriage equality is the law of the land.”
Takei added that he and his husband, Brad, are going to an LGBT DNC gala with Obama later this month, and DNC donors will be entered to win a chance at winning a trip to the New York City event.
“After the Supreme Court’s landmark marriage equality ruling in June, we have a lot to celebrate,” he said. “And I don’t know about you, but I want to thank the President in person for his continued support of the LGBT community.”
Takei wrote on Facebook a few days ago that Kentucky county clerk Kim Davis, jailed six days for contempt of court for denying same-sex marriage licenses, “is no hero to be celebrated.”
“She broke her oath to uphold the Constitution and defied a court order so she could deny government services to couples who are legally entitled to be married. She is entitled to hold her religious beliefs, but not to impose those beliefs on others,” he said. “If she had denied marriage certificates to an interracial couple, would people cheer her? Would presidential candidates flock to her side? In our society, we obey civil laws, not religious ones. To suggest otherwise is, simply put, entirely un-American.”
Takei apologized in early July for calling Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas “a clown in blackface” for his dissent in the 5-4 ruling on same-sex marriage.
“‘Blackface’ is a lesser known theatrical term for a white actor who blackens his face to play a black buffoon. In traditional theater lingo, and in my view and intent, that is not racist. It is instead part of a racist history in this country,” he wrote on his Facebook page after Twitter outrage over his comments.
“I feel Justice Thomas has abdicated and abandoned his African American heritage by claiming slavery did not strip dignity from human beings. He made a similar remark about the Japanese American internment, of which I am a survivor. A sitting Justice of the Supreme Court ought to know better.”
