Boehner Has U.S. Capitol Flags Lowered to Half-Staff to Honor Chattanooga Victims

Although President Barack Obama still has not issued a presidential proclamation ordering the lowering of the U.S. flag to half-staff at the White House and federal properties, House Speaker John Boehner took action Tuesday morning to rectify the situation at the Capitol.

As Congress reconvened today, Boehner ordered flags over the United States Capitol to be flown at half-staff to honor the five service members killed in Chattanooga, Tennessee.

“The flags @USCapitol stand at half-staff today in honor of the brace service members we lost in #Chattanooga,” the speaker posted to Twitter, along with a photo of the U.S. Capitol.

The speaker said in a statement:

“Last week, five brave service members were murdered in a terror attack in Chattanooga, Tennessee. Out of respect for their courageous service and sacrifice to our nation, flags at the U.S. Capitol are being lowered to half-staff. Later today, we will also mark a moment of silence on the House floor in their memory. We will continue to pray for their loved ones and also take action to protect our men and women in uniform who protect all Americans.”
