The Beeb reports:

The founder of Russia’s most popular social network site says he has been fired and that allies of President Putin have taken over his site.

Pavel Durov who ran VKontakte had previously announced he was leaving the company but said he had withdrawn his resignation.

The company denied it had been withdrawn.

Mr Durov had previously refused requests from the Russian government to censor posts on his site.

In a statement Mr Durov said that he only found out about the loss of his job from press reports: “Today I was fired as general director of VKontakte. It’s interesting that the shareholders didn’t have the bravery to do this directly, and that I learned about my firing from the press.

“Today VKontakte goes under the complete control of Igor Sechin and Alisher Usmanov. Probably, in the Russian context, something like this was inevitable, but I’m happy we lasted seven and a half years. We did a lot. And part of what’s been done can’t be turned back.”

Sechin is Putin’s former chief of staff, and he currently runs state-owned oil company Rosneft. Now he runs a more or less state-owned social network, too. Usmanov is Russia’s richest man, with iron and steel and English football’s Arsenal among the things he has at least partial ownership of. He is one of Russia’s oligarchs.

I’m sure Edward Snowden will rush out to denounce the seizure of VKontakte any…second…now.

Ah, the cheap shot at the end. Cl-assy, Bryan.

Hey, should Edward Snowden, an American best known for "outting" the NSA to other Americans about the spying on innocent Americans, tell the Russians how to run their country? Probably not.

So? Obama's allies seized control of pretty much the entire American MSM quite some time ago.

BTW, your obsession about bringing up Snowden every chance you think you have to fit it in somehow and someway, presumably to divert attention from the highly anti-American N-Stasi-A, is becoming past silly.

Rumor has it that Snowden was hired to work at VK as a "security" expert. Yeah, all the personal info will be kept strictly "confidential" under Putin and Snowden's watchful eyes...

Good one, JSenta! Yeah, what a complete douche-nozzel that Snowden guy is. Am I right?

I mean, he ratted out the NSA to America. God, I can't believe what a scum bag liar he is. How could the NSA have been betrayed by someone like that? Sieg Heil, NSA!

Hey, JSenta, grab your jack-boots and I'll goosestep down the street with you in solidarity to our hard-working comrades in the NSA.

What a hypocrite you are! So your adage is "what's good for thee is not good for me." Do you believe it is morally acceptable to have Russian journalists put under surveillance by the FSB, then murdered? or how about Putin poisoning journalists? Wiki has a list of the journalists who have been murdered-- go look it up, and get back to me about your jackboot sympathies. Why is what Putin does to Russians perfectly acceptable, but far lesser claims of NSA collecting Meta data results in your going ballistic? Or are you just naturally an anti-American Leftist?

Wow. There are so many straw men in your response, that I don't really know where to begin.

You're "ironic" comment put Snowden into the same moral camp as Putin. I pointed out that Snowden wasn't screwing Americans, but alerting them to a danger to their liberties.

How you were able to go from there to "JaycenR is a leftist!" is lunacy. Considering you're the one who likens Snowden's whistle-blowing to Communist persecution, it seems far more likely you are the leftist. You are the one who's angry the STATE got bi+ch-slapped by Snowden, not me.

Have fun with that, hippie.

It's about time you recognize that Snowden is a traitor to America. I suspect he defected to Russia years ago. He was out to harm America. He works for Putin. If Snowden only wished to alert Americans, he would not have fled to Hong Kong, followed by his trip to Russia. He would have stayed in America and presented his case. But he fled. He's nothing more than a liar, a thief and a traitor.

The N-Stasi-A, it's controllers and employees, and it's supporters and apologists, are the traitors to America. The Founding Fathers, to a man, would utterly abhor it, and them, even more than they abhorred King George whom the fought a long and bloody war to be rid of. Now King George is back and on massive high tech crack.
