Ted Cruz: Holder Must Appoint a Special Prosecutor to Investigate IRS Abuse

Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) has written a letter to Attorney General Eric Holder, calling on him to appoint a special prosecutor to investigate the Internal Revenue Service’s abuse of conservative, Tea Party and other groups prior to the 2012 election.

In the letter, Cruz notes that despite President Obama’s initial stated “outrage” over the abuse, the FBI has decided not to prosecute anyone. He writes that “As matters currently stand, an impartial observer could reasonably conclude (1) that the “outrage” and “anger” expressed by both you and President obama was less than sincere, (2) that the investigation was designed to brush the matter under the carpet, and  — especially — to avoid any facts coming to light that might indicate the White House, and (3) the Administration intends to continue using the machinery of government to target its political opponents.”

Cruz’s letter comes in the same week that news broke concerning the IRS’ investigation of Friends of Abe, a conservative-leaning group in Hollywood that has been denied tax-exempt status for two years. The IRS has sought access to the group’s website that would divulge its membership list. Also this week, the Department of Justice has indicted conservative author and producer Dinesh D’Souza over alleged campaign finance violations — violations that pale in comparison to those systematically committed by the Obama campaign’s online fundraising in both the 2008 and 2012 elections. The campaign intentionally turned off safeguards on its websites that would have blocked foreign donations, a fact proven by a PJ Media investigation. The Obama campaign’s acceptance of foreign donations breaks campaign finance law, but has never been investigated by Justice.

The IRS abuse case investigation was handled by Barbara Bosserman, who donated thousands of dollars to Obama’s campaigns.

Cruz writes that Holder should preserve the Justice Department’s independence by appointing a special prosecutor to examine the IRS abuse, which based on the Friends of Abe case, is ongoing.
