Rep. Jim Matheson announced today that he will not seek re-election next year. His district is an R+16 district, and his retirement has caused the Cook Political Report to shift it from Lean D to Likely R.

Matheson appeared on the NRCC’s Red Zone, as one of the GOP’s most likely pickups in the House next year.
His abrupt retirement paves the way for Republican and former Saratoga Springs Mayor Mia Love to take the seat next year. Should Love conquer, her win would represent a Republican pickup, and she would be the only black female conservative in Congress.
