After a day flooded with remembrances and praise from congressional Republicans for former Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher, a Senate Democrat weighed in with his own tribute to the Conservative leader.
“Margaret Thatcher was a dynamic force as an ally to the United States in winning the cold War and overcoming the despotism and repression suffered by hundreds of millions at the hands of Soviet communism,” said Sen. Robert Menendez (D-N.J.), chairman of the Foreign Relations Committee.
Menendez, the son of Cuban immigrants, is a foe of the Castro regime.
“She was a persuasive, transformative leader who shaped world events with the power of her personality. A grocer’s daughter, she was known, affectionately and deservedly as ‘The Iron Lady,'” Menendez continued. “Margaret Thatcher’s life and legacy of leadership will endure for many generations to come.”
“Our thoughts and prayers are with her family and with the people of Great Britain and the world as we mourn her passing.”
House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) lauded Thatcher as “a public servant who never failed to break down barriers” and “a commanding political figure.”
“As the first woman—and longest-serving—British Prime Minister, she possessed a singular resilience that commanded the respect of her colleagues, the attention of a nation, and the awe of women and men across the world,” Pelosi said.
“She was a relentless force and a steady hand in our fight to win the Cold War, helping to bring down the Berlin Wall brick by brick. She led her country with poise, grace, and an unmistakable iron will that will forever stand as a true testament to her unwavering commitment to public service.”
There has been no comment from Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.).
