Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) took a nice swipe at Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel on a panel at the morning American Israel Public Affairs Committee conference.

“We need members of the national security team who are pro-Israel, not anti-Israel,” McCain said. He followed this comment with a knowing smile.

McCain spoke on a panel with Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand (D-N.Y.). He received a rock-star welcome with the longest and loudest ovation so far.

The senator said he often tells Baptist friends “it’s hard doing the Lord’s work in the city of Satan.”

McCain also made a joke about Israeli Ambassador Michael Oren being an “Ivy League socialist.”

Grampy McCain toggles his so-called principles on and off to fit the news cycle. He and his BFF Graham voted for cloture, ensuring Hagel was confirmed. I hate it when he's given credit for feints like this one. He's a threat to our security. The voters of Arizona can take satisfaction in knowing he'll burn them on Shamnesty next.

Bully for McCain. If that's how he felt why didn't he do something about Hagel when he had the chance?

McCain is a jackass, sorry. All due respect to his service and suffering, he is - on balance - not nearly as helpful to the cause as someone with his stature could be. Making jokes about who we need on a national security team ? When he had the committee cloture vote choice in his hands to prevent the incompetent and destructive Hagel from seeing the light of day and ? Just shut up.
