Gun-Control Activists to March in Washington Tomorrow

Actors Kathleen Turner and Sam Waterston will be the headliners at the March on Washington for Gun Control tomorrow.

“Calling all citizen activists: mothers, fathers, children, grandparents, teachers, police, mayors, students, universities, artists, and actors:  We want Congress to reinstate the assault weapon ban, ban high capacity ammunition magazines and require background checks for all guns. We want Congress to enforce a 28 day waiting period, require mandatory gun safety training before the purchase of a gun, and outlaw bullets that shatter in the body. This is a public safety issue. 30,000 people are killed each year in America from guns. There are 300 million guns in America,” the organizers said in a mission statement.

Other speakers expected at the event — which has just 3,266 confirmed marchers, as of this posting, according to the official March blog — are Rep. Chris Van Hollen (D-Md.), One Million Moms for Gun Control founder Shannon Watts, a Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence official, and clergy members.

The late-morning march will begin at the Capitol Reflecting Pool and end at the Washington Monument.

D.C. Del. Eleanor Holmes Norton (D), fired up about a resolution introduced Tuesday by Rep. Phil Gingrey (R-Ga.) that would exempt active-duty military personnel from the District’s gun laws, will also speak.

“The non-binding Gingrey resolution is the tip of the iceberg of pro-gun amendments that will threaten the nation, not to mention the District, which is especially vulnerable to the extremism of the NRA,” Norton said. “However, the slaughter of the 26 elementary school children and adults in Newtown has created new allies that will ensure that the gun lobby, for the first time in a generation, does not get its way.”

Promoting the march today on CNN, Turner said she won’t act in another movie with gun violence. She’s best known for 1980s movies including Romancing the Stone and Body Heat.
