North Korea Threatens US with Nuclear Weapons, But What Difference Does It Make?

None. No difference at all, in terms of the president’s popularity. The American people re-elected a man who does not care about rising threats, and he has nominated a man for secretary of state who cares even less about rising threats. And a majority of the Americans people don’t care that their leaders don’t care.

So here we are.

“We are not disguising the fact that the various satellites and long-range rockets that we will fire and the high-level nuclear test we will carry out are targeted at the United States,” North Korea’s National Defense Commission said, Reuters reports, citing the state news agency KCNA.

The commission described the UN Security Council as “a marionette of the US,” and said the Security Council “should apologize for its crime of seriously encroaching upon the independence of a sovereign state … and repeal all the unreasonable ‘resolutions’ at once.”

The North Koreans are believed to possess enough material to build up to eight nuclear weapons.

There will probably be more sanctions against them. But the sanctions, they do nothing to stop North Korea’s nuclear program. They’re every bit as effective as Chicago’s gun control laws.
