Congressman: Just Let Me Hang with Normal People

No sooner did the 113th Congress kick off than the House took a week off.

The lower chamber won’t meet again until Jan. 14 at 2 p.m., sending lawmakers home to their districts for several days of kibitzing with constituents.

One Republican was particularly blunt about what the week off meant.

“After what was a long week in Washington, D.C., I’m happy to be back home and spending time with normal people,” said Nevada Rep. Mark Amodei.

Amodei said he’ll spend this week “crisscrossing Northern Nevada, from Owyhee to McDermitt, from Elko to Carson City, making stops at schools, the U.S. Forest Service, a fire department, a police department, tribal councils, county commissions, a chamber of commerce, a Rotary Club, a veterans’ town hall, you name it.”

“You cannot substitute getting together face-to-face with the Nevadans who gave you the job,” he added.

Amodei, who represents the northern half of the state, came to Congress in the 2010 midterm elections. He easily won re-election. He previously tried to run against Harry Reid (D-Nev.), but that nod went to failed candidate Sharron Angle.
