Rep. Nan Hayworth (R-N.Y.) told CNN there was “a whole range of sentiments” in the GOP meeting.
“There is new spending. So that’s a tremendous concern. Are we really going to benefit people? We know we need tax relief. We don’t want everybody’s taxes to go up,” she said.
Hayworth confirmed that the hope is for an amended bill — an “alternative” — to present back to the Senate.
“We need to weigh all the factors. I assure you we are. The discussion was vigorous. It was thoughtful,” she said. “It represented an entire range of views about where we strike the balance between the perfect and the good, don’t let the perfect be the enemy of the good, but we really do have a serious problem on our hands that the president and the Senate have essentially refused to address.”
“The Senate hasn’t passed a budget in more than three years. It’s three-and-a-half years now. And all of a sudden they come up with this last-minute bill. They’re the ones who have really been holding the American economy and the American taxpayer hostage for the past several years. It’s not right.”
A Senate Democratic aide told The Hill that House Republicans have two choices: “cut their losses and pass the deal now, or else put up a fight they cannot win and pass the same deal a few days now after being further humiliated.”
The overwhelming GOP support for the Senate bill at 2 a.m. — from fiscal conservatives including Sens. Tom Coburn (R-Okla.) and Pat Toomey (R-Pa.) — was seen as a move to put pressure on Republican colleagues in the lower chamber to pass it.
“We have to do more. We have to get our spending under control. We need entitlement reform,” Sen. John Hoeven (R-N.D.) said on CNN. “I pushed for a big deal along with others, but we have to get the work done for the American people. So we can’t get it all done. We need to start doing it in pieces or in chunks.”
Cantor spokesman Rory Cooper issued a tweet a short time ago trying to tamp down speculation about the caucus’ next move: “Folks out there w/ crazy theories about what’s going on in House. All ridiculous. Just figuring out best path forward. Stay calm, carry on.”
“Majority Leader Cantor stands with @SpeakerBoehner. Speculation otherwise is silly, non-productive and untrue,” tweeted Doug Heye, another Cantor spokesman.
“Speaker Boehner and I are working with House Leadership and our conference to find best path forward,” Cantor followed up in a tweet of his own.
UPDATE: Multiple sources say GOP leaders are doing whip counts to proceed directly to a vote on the Senate bill, with no amendments. The vote could happen as early as 9:30 p.m.
UPDATE 2: The House Rules Committee is meeting in a matter of minutes to move forward with Senate bill, clean of amendments.
UPDATE 3: The bill is out of the Rules Committee and headed to the House floor for debate. Vote is expected around 11 p.m.

Well, if the House GOP passes the Senate Bill amended with spending cuts and the Dems dont compromise (the mantra on NPR for the last couple of months is that the GOP is full of extremist Tea Party types that wont compromise and thus they are ebil), then we should hear the media go after the uncompromising Dems and Obama, am I right?
Yea! And I’ll help you deliver dry ice to Hell, if you drive.
“Democracy means, as I said, a willingness to come together for the good of the country,” said Rep. Chris Van Hollen (D-Md.), ranking member on the House Budget Committee.”
Oh, yes, I remember the “nation before party” Democrats of the later Iraq years. Rocks of the Republic. “Willing suspension of disbelief”, anyone? In fact, I fondly remember Hillary’s sourpuss look during Bush’s immediate post-9/11 Congressional address.
Pass the amendments.
BUT; Wasn’t that when Hillary was going through menopause?
Where’s your compassion?
The Repubs will get blamed no matter what. They should tell the Marxists no tax increases and spending has to be cut, or no deal and no increase in the debt ceiling in a month.
The Repubs need to grow a pair for once and stop worrying about things they can’t control, like the press. Until they offer an alternative they are useless. Over the last 110 years they have compromised to the point that there ain’t much left of the country.
RE: “but Senate Democrats have indicated that they will not accept an amended bill.”
I laughed out loud….
Boehner should make any amendment they want, and call it the “Harry Reid Bonus”.
Reid already said he would shut down the Senate if Romney won. So, return the favor, and enclose packets of petroleum jelly to aid in slipping it through.
Let’s start a campaign to send lubricated condoms to Congress. I don’t want to see any one of them claiming they were hurt by their fellow Congressperson.
And when they screw their constituents, maybe they’ll be kind enough to use one.
I can’t pass this up:
Bret Baier just said there is a “free flowing fluid situation going on right now”!!!!
Sounds like a sewage leak, to me.
Fantastic! I’m off to the drug store.
The following will never be said of a certain individual, who, at the end of the day, is a small man, devoid of any personally admirable greatness of character, and time will show it:
“While one must be tough in negotiation, care should be taken not to turn adversaries into enemies. Reagan cautioned: “You’ll probably get more of what you want if you don’t issue ultimatums and leave your adversary room to maneuver; you shouldn’t back your adversary into a corner, embarass him, or humiliate him.” Fellow actor Charlton Heston has described this aspect of Reagan’s negotiating style, as applied during the first strike of the Screen Actor’s Guild: “He was always good-humored. He would never take a confrontational position; he was not dogmatic. He might disagree, but he’d find a way to leave the other side with a feeling that they were good guys, too, and not the enemy. That is hard to do in such situations.”
From “Reagan on Leadership”, Strock, pg 66.
And he handled the PATCO strike with equal finesse.
Amend the bill? I say the House should burn the damn bill and send the ashes back with a note telling Reid that such legislation by law begins in the House, not the Senate.
This Republic has failed. Government panders to the irresponsible leeches. The professional political class survives because they take a dollar from someone and divides it amongst as many as possible. Take that dollar, divide it four ways and make one enemy and four ‘friends’ that will vote for them. And they do this year after year, administration after administration. That is the demise of this republic.
Back in the ’60s there was a popular saying: ‘Burn, baby burn.’ Time to let the Republic burn. Fire is a not only a great teacher, it is a great cleanser.
In the House, Boehner’s best shot was his Plan B. It got shot down–not by the Dems, but by some House Republicans.
After that, Boehner gave up, basically. He couldn’t get his own party on board for any deal that involved raising taxes on the wealthy. And Obama was going to veto any deal that didn’t include that.
The Senate passed a bill. Wow. Let the legislative process work. Send an amended return back and then let the senate work out the differences with the house. Is this so complicated? Biden negotiating with McConnell and that is it? Give me a break.
If the GOP continues true to form, they will negotiate with themselves and write an amendment to lower the income threshold back down to $250K for tax hikes with immediate defense sequestration.
Actually, considering the clock, that wouldn’t be such a bad idea. Doing so would send the bill back to the Senate without enough time to invoke cloture on it before the term expires. 8 Senators voted against it last night; just 2 of them could drag the process out long enough to prevent it from getting passed before the term expires, at which point the bill dies and any new deal must be started over. At this point, trading integrity for time is a good proposition; just 40 more hours, that’s all we need to kill this.
I really like your strategic thinking. At this point you know they are going to F’ us over so I like anything that will throw rocks in the gear box. Let’s start the agony all over again Thursday when the new Congress convenes.
As a preliminary move get Boehner out of the Speakership. The Repubs should appoint Scott Walker for Speaker. Under the Constitution you don’t have to be a member of Congress to be Speaker. That would send the right message to the Marxists….including the ones with an “R” behind their name.
How much are we saving by keeping Obama in Washington instead of Honolulu?
Knowing his habits, he’ll have the Hawaiian neighborhood flown in to the White House for a week so he doesn’t miss out.
You’ll not disrupt the Obama legacy with a paltry crisis.
Amend the bill house Republicans, it’s the only route to take. Cut $61 dollars for every $41 dollars in taxes. Make the tax increases start in two years, spending cuts start now. Turn the F$%^%$ tide on Obama!
The Repubs should all vote “present.” Let the Dems own this.
The GOP will AGAIN act like a bunch if frightened pussies and pass the Srnate bill. Tea Party we need you”
The Age of Obama: Those enabled by media do as they will, everyone else suffers as they must.
GOP used to stand for the Grand Old Party. It now stands for the Gutless Old Pukes.
The Senate passes a revenue bill, huh?
Pardon me, but doesn’t the Constitution CLEARLY limit the Power to enact revenue to the House?
This is why Senators were, and by rights still SHOULD BE elected by their state legislatures.
The cowards will wait until we’ve gone to bed to vote for this crap sandwich rather than stuffing it back down the senate’s throat. Cowards.
Hindraker over at Powerline is right: the “tax the rich” issue is not a winner for Republicans. Do the deal and get it off the table. Then take up spending cuts with the debt ceiling. It will soon become apparent that there will not be enough revenue to close the deficit and either spending will have to be cut or taxes raised substantially –on everybody. That will not be popular. Obama and the crazy left don’t seem to care that the national debt is nearing catastrophic levels (one could almost believe they have a death wish for the country — but no, that couldn’t be the case), but the rest of the country does care.
“Democracy means, as I said, a willingness to come together for the good of the country,” said Rep. Chris Van Hollen (D-Md.), ranking member on the House Budget Committee.” So why don’t you liberals come together for the good of the country and reduce spending, agreeing with the Tea Party?? Certainly raising taxes and increasing spending is not for the good of the country.
18. moron
Van Hollen thinks he is. There is a split in America over proper economic policy. Republicans think that budgets, deficits and government spending are important, even critical to the economy. So do Democrats. The difference is that (R)’s see government as a drag on the economy while (D)’s see government as the driver (engine?) of the economy.
(R)’s think if the government share of the economy gets to big, the economy will collapse. (D)’s think that is the government IS the economy, it CANNOT collapse. To the Left, the Economy is not real. It is just an idea that everybody shares. So long as we ALL share that idea, nothing will happen.
That is why the (D)’s see Conservatives as such a threat. If enough people look down, Wily E. Coyote drops like a rock.
Since Socialism always leads to economic collapse (D)’s say that happens because eventually someone looks down. The Emperor only gets cold because some punk kid noticed he was neekked. If the fiction of being clothed had been allowed to continue, then the Emperor would have stayed warm and comfy.
That is why it was critical for the GOP to vote present.
When the inevitable happens, the media will now be able to blame the GOP. It is called the party of stupid for a good reason. The GOP will keep Rince and Dry as the RNC chairthing. This is after delivering the worst a$$whooping in American political history.
Yep, the party of stupid.
