Missouri: McCaskill Shuts Down Akin Challenge

It seems that the “legitimate rape” comment — and subsequent yanking of most GOP support — helped doom Rep. Todd Akin’s (R-Mo.) Senate campaign after all.

With 35 percent of precincts reporting, Akin had 41.4 percent of the vote compared to 51.9 percent for Sen. Claire McCaskill (D).

Akin stubbornly refused to drop out of the race after his August comment and the withdrawal of National Republican Senatorial Committee and Republican National Committee funding. He pulled conservatives Sen. Jim DeMint (R-S.C.), Mike Huckabee, and Newt Gingrich to his side.

Real Clear Politics took the race out of the toss-up column just before Election Day after new polling data skewed firmly toward the Democrat.

UPDATE: Akin just conceded the race to supporters after calling McCaskill to do the same.
