We’ve had the capability to shoot a missile down an airshaft since the Gulf War. Taking out the source of mortar fire was well within our means and at incredibly low risk. We didn’t have to send in helicopters; we could’ve used ultra-fast F4s that they would never be able to hit. OR- if that’s still not palpable to this coward of a President- we could’ve hit them with drones. As it was, we have troops on the ground with weapons trained on the source of the mortar fire, requesting and being denied permission to fire.
AC-130′s are vulnerable, maybe, in theory, to ManPADS. Nobody has ever shot one down with a ManPAD so that theory is untested. Plus the Newer AC-130 has defensive systems against ManPADS. Panetta is a coward, pure and simple. No, ‘damn the torpedos, full speed ahead’ for Leon. At the Alamo he would have asked which horse was the fastest.

BS. For a high risk mission, you ask for volunteers. They were Marines. The Platoon commander would have been ordered to ask for volunteers. He would have musterted his platoon and said there were a dozen or so Americans surrounded in some building in Benghazi and he needed volunteers to help hold off a few hundred Haji’s until the MAU could get a battalion there. Every man in his platoon would have stepped up. Difficult mission, out numbered 5 to 1, No hope of reinforcements for hours and maybe days? Hell yes, I want some of that.

The State Department had nothing to do with it. When Congress investigates, they will find that ALL the bills for the Benghazi site were paid out of CIA accounts. It was a CIA op, start to finish. Petraeus will end up falling on his sword. It will be determined who made the decision to stand down support. That person will be destroyed professionally and hopefully personally. The White House aide that prevented support in Blackhawk down got away with it. The military will not allow that to happen again. The Admiral in charge during blackhawk down took responsibility. IIRC, he retired a short while later. He had orders from the White House but he never said from who.
We will see if the cover-up holds this time. There will be audit trails up the whyzoo here. When the poor brave souls on the ground called for back-up, that call was logged. ALL calls are. Congress can request those logs. The calls went up the chain of command. When they stop, we have the person who decided to let them die. They need to face criminal charges. They also need to face a civil suite for wrongful death.

Nope, I’m not very versed in what the CIA would or would not do within their chain of command. But, I do know that the State Dept has “code word flash traffic” and assuredly communicated this (under attack) to the White House Situation Room because the emails are addressed to the situation room and their receipt was acknowledged. I obviously am no Obama fan and I’ll admit it, but I never thought I would live to see an American president just stand by and allow Americans to be attacked and murdered…but that is exactly what he did.
The worst part of it all is that we had assets on site – AC-130 Spectre gunship and CIA operator on the ground with a laser designator “painting” targets such as the rooftops where the mortars were firing on our people. There was at least one, and according to some sources several, drones circling overhead for the majority of the battle. These drones are capable of streaming directly to the white house situation room and I can see no reason why they wouldn’t be in a situation like this. The optics on those drones are incredible, easily capable of seeing the entire battlefield, the positions of enemies and US forces relative strengths etc. I actually doubt Obama gave the order to stand down, since he was likely asleep preparing for his big day in Vegas, but you’d think any competent commander would’ve been in communication with any nearby forces and tried to co-ordinate some sort of effort to relieve besieged US forces. We have forces on the ground nearby, multiple overwhelming forces an hour away, and the best excuse they can come up with for doing nothing is that they had to ask the Libyans for permission to use their airspace? When we had a drone already in it? This may not be treason, but it reeks of incompetence. At the very least it most certainly doesn’t look good this close to election, and no matter how much you and Barak wish this whole thing would just go away, it’s not.

(1) abu Ghraib wasn’t nearly this serious — in fact, very few countries and quite a number of states in the United States would treat it as “boys being boys”, even when some of them were girls.
(2) CIA doesn’t have command authority; CIA can’t order an AC-130 to fire. They have to ask a military guy to order them to fire.
(3) Where does CIA’s chain of command intersect with the military? In the National Security Council.
It’s unclear who made the decision to refuse permission to fire, but it was almost certainly a political appointee, it was almost certainly at White House level and very probably in the White House.

Frankly, I think what Panetta said was exactly what happened: the decision makers didn’t understand what was going on, so they balked. I think it was due to the diplomat/bureacrat’s tendency not to act in haste. Even if he’s got a CIA agent hollering at him about an ongoing mortar attack, he doesn’t want to do anything until he’s got all the facts, has worked out all the implications (for U.S. diplomacy and his career), and has consulted his superiors.
Got a laser designator pointed at the mortar team that’s putting rounds on our consulate? Stand down! They might be our “allies!” It’s complicated!

2 hours or 7 hours, it was an attack on US citizens on US sovereign land. If our nearest assets were 2+ hours away in Italy, they still should have been sent, even if they just waste fuel.
Let’s not go overboard with cries of treason here. What happened here was relatively trivial. Someone was close to finding that Obama and Stevens were having an affair, so the WH had to eliminate Stevens quickly. There really was no other reason for Stevens being ordered to be in Benghazi in the first place, while the Ambassador to Egypt was pulled from that country in anticipation of the “riots.” So let’s not make a big deal over this.
BTW, if Obama loses, he’s going to be spending the next two months issuing presidential pardons.

Very hard to understand why nothing was done. One possibility that comes to mind is perhaps Obama wanted to avoid at all costs a botched rescue attempt such as the one that sank Jimmy Carter’s last gasp campaign in ’79.. In this twisted thinking, it would be better to let the ambassador and entourage die then to try a rescue that fails. Pretty sick if true.
We are talking about something much more simple. Put a Maverick or Hellfire missile on that mortar, and the attack is over. Then chopper in some Soldiers or Marines, evacuate the staff including a breathing Ambassador.
There might have been multiple mortars, some unseen. But so what.
There might have been women and children standing adjacent – or brought along as human shields. Well, we know what wimps our ROE are these days.
We want to separate two things.
One, the story, that this was an unexpected uprising by civilians upset at a youtube video, and we didn’t know it was going to happen, we didn’t know it was happening, and didn’t have any reason to think it seriously – and that it all went bad in five minutes. NONE of that turns out to be true.
Second, that it was just the ambassador and three guys, alone and abandoned because the bureaucracy turned down requests for support. No. There were thirty more in the American party, who DID GET OUT. And there were an unknown number of CIA operatives nearby, with heavy weapons, and realtime communications, and an expert and prepared familiarity with the entire situation. We’ve heard of four to six, but there might have been fifty or five hundred, for all we know, including contractors and auxiliaries.
They had a Predator on-scene within an hour and it sounds like a Spectre.
Frankly, I’d cashier the guys on the Spectre who didn’t fire, and the hell with everyone upstream. OTOH those guys may just cashier themselves in shame.

ABC has an off-hand comment about it in the “Father of Slain Former SEAL..” story. Apparently CNN had it up for a while. Drudge has it of course, probably did before Fox put it up.

In this type of situation the President has to give the green light to engage ground targets then it is up to the military/CIA to use proper target identification. The killing of Somali pirates and rescue of the hostages was a similar situation. The Prezt gives the ok to engage then the military does its thing. If the Prez doesn’t give the go ahead then all the military can do is loiter around the target which is what happened in Libya. I don’t believe for a minute that the order to stand down didn’t come straight from the top. Alternatively, I wouldn’t be surprised if Obama refused to answer the call so generals and/or the CIA were forced to deny cover fire without approval from the Prez. That way Obama can say he never said no to support and can lay blame on the CIA or military.
Good observation…in a Clintonesque parsing kind of way. Damn shame we have to decipher intent in a matter as serious as American lives. I always felt the SEAL’s took their shot when they had it – Dear Leader never gave the order, but he knew (and the SEAL’s knew) that he could never admit not giving the order. No proof, just my gut feeling.
Remember, he went to bed not knowing whether Stevens was alive or dead. For all we know, the last order he gave that night could have been, “Whatever happens, don’t wake me up.”

There is a lot we do not know, and a lot the world must not know, but some things are crystal clear. We know the White House had three real time links: the embassy, the CIA safe house, and overhead assets. All were confirming a military attack, real time, over the space of hours. We had enough assets over head to disrupt the attacks; they were not used. Our embassy guards, roughly four, had weapons, but carried no ammo. What would you do if similarly armed and attacked by 50 -300 heavily armed warriors? We had special forces available, who could have been on dirt within hours.
There is a real issue in defending our consulate, our dirt, versus defending a CIA safe house, their dirt. Had the Ambassador, under fire, had made it to the safe house, another fact would have been definitive. He stands on our dirt.
But we are absolutely positive that after the combat, our UN ambassador went on five national news programs and lied through her, or somebody’s, teeth. As Leon Penetta so clearly is correct, millions of Monday morning quarter backs now know his boss was defending a lie. Obama is not stupid; why did he do it? Or maybe he is. Penetta is very wrong on one major point. The next play will be called on Nov. 6; it is a Tuesday.

A caller just called into Rush within the last half hour or so—said he was a Special Forces Lt. Col., and that he was possibly risking his career by saying this stuff, and he then went on to outline the exact SOP and actions that would have occurred when our people in Benghazi sent a message to State that the our Consulate was under attack and our Ambassador was there and in harm’s way.
Only listened to the first part but, according to this officer, a highest priority “Flash” message—learned about them in my basic training briefings many decades ago–would have immediately come to the White House Situation Room, and would have been handed to whoever was “standing next to POTUS,” the likely crew, the head of the CIA, the National Security Adviser, the Secretary of Defense, or Secretary of State, and, then, he implied, handed immediately to Obama.
The caller also pointed out that our military “In Extremis” forces—by their very nature—are ready to go 24/7, and that their aircraft were on the pad, gassed up and ready to take off on a few minute’s notice, and that we had such forces in Italy, an hour or two away from Benghazi—and this multi-wave attack lasted between 7 and 8 hours.
So, our forces could have arrived in time to stop the attack and perhaps save some of the people who were killed.
Its now being reported today that one of our C-130 gunships was, in fact, in the air over Benghazi (so much for Hillary’s excuse that we couldn’t get permission from the Libyan authorities to enter their airspace), and that the CIA operators on the ground had laser designators on Jihadi mortar positions. So, we could have fought back and perhaps saved the Ambassador and the other three, but our forces were told to “stand down,” multiple times, were given orders not to shoot back, or were not deployed.
The President’s first and foremost duty is to “Protect and Defend the Constitution of the United States” and our citizens.
As Obama has admitted in the past, the “buck does stop with him,” as the “Commander in Chief” he has the ultimate authority and decision making power, and only he could have given the order to fight or to “stand down.”
In this case, Obama had real time information, and video feeds from the drone overhead as to the basics of what was happening, and apparently gave the order to “stand down,” and let our Consulate and CIA facility be attacked, overrun, and destroyed, and our diplomats and CIA agents be slaughtered.
For what reason we have no idea, yet, but some of the ideas being bandied about, of this being an attempt to cover up–i.e. “dead men tell no tales” illicit, massive arms running to the Jihadis, or a White House cooked up “October surprise” gone horribly wrong, a kidnapping by Jihadis of the Ambassador to exchange him for the blind Sheikh–the Sheikh gets transferred, the Ambassador gets rescued, unharmed, and Obama emerges as the hero–far fetched perhaps–but given what has just happened in terms of the President’s totally inexplicable inaction, such “far fetched” scenarios are starting to look more and more plausible by the hour.
P.S. Political hack SECDEF Panetta using the “fog of war” (earlier used by Hillary) excuse to explain his and the President and his Administration’s inaction—i.e. the President, and his people at DOD, CIA, State didn’t know what was going on, and as they first said didn’t have enough information, and, now, the excuse is that couldn’t sort out what was really happening from the massive amount of information they were receiving, and to quote Penetta, “you don’t send forces into situations when you don’t know what’s happening,” is just pathetic, and just won’t wash.
I am not trying to over-simplify this or restate the obvious, but “the fog of war” just doesn’t work here. In addition to e-mails, telephone calls, “flash” messages and whatever other information – THEY WERE WATCHING IT IN REAL TIME IN THE SITUATION ROOM VIA PREDATOR DRONE OVERHEAD ON STATION – with their own eyes. How much more information do you need to understand it was an attack? All of them apparently: Obama, Hillary, Leon, Chairman of Joint Chiefs (aka: worthless)…the club was all there.
Perhaps, if, Libya’s government forbade our deploying forces, then perhaps, there would be some small justification for doing nothing. But then we have a serious problem with Libya. If there is some big secret that justifies doing nothing but watch Americans die, it needs to be told. Is there? Nah, I didn’t think so.
Am I missing something here? I’ve read and re-read the Fox article; I don’t see where they’re reporting that a Specter was on station over the consulate. They only mention two drones being there and go on to imply that a Specter could have been dispatched from Sigonella and have been over the battle within the relevant time-frame.
In either case there’s criminal neglect, to say the least, along the chain of command – but if there was no Specter on station we shouldn’t be talking as if there were.

A AC-130U Gun ship was over Benghazi, operational, but forbidden to engage. Whoever gave that order has American blood on his hands. According to the article, there only a few people authorized to give orders to that plane.

Point in fact, the CIA & DEA has been using “Military contractors” in South America to track the drug trade in planes like the Cessna 208B.
Armed and ISR versions of the Cessna 208B are in service with the Iraqi Air Force as “Manned Predators” using Hellfire missiles to kill Al-Qaeda.
Another CIA contractor with a similar plane is also a possible explanation of the “laser designating” portion of the FOX News story independent of whether there was a AC-130U on station.

There are few assets that irregular troops or terrorists might have had that would have threatened fighter jets from Italy or AC-130 gunships. It is possible, but not too likely.

Today we found out why Obama has lied and lied and lied about the “Not Optimal” deaths of those 4 Americans in Libya, including our Ambassador. Today we found out that the CIA station there was begging to go help the Consulate, but they were ordered to Stand Down and not help. Today we found out that they waited because Obama ordered them not to go help, but after they were ordered not to help again, they disobeyed orders and went anyway. We found out that the agents that went to help saved most of the people in the Embassy, but because of the delay caused by their dispicable orders it was too late for the Ambassador and his assistant. We also know that there were planes and teams available in Italy, just 2 hours away that could have saved all those live if they had been deployed in time. Obama refused to send help. And we know that two of the deaths were those CIA Station guys, the two Seals, who died as heroes saving many lives by disobeying their orders. All of that folks was known the day of, and the day after, Al Qaeda launched their attack. So why the LIES about a spontaneous demonstration that everyone knew never existed? Because Obama and his administration pulled all the security from Libya, then refused to provide help when the terror attack launched. Obama knows that the blood of our Ambassador and those other 3 Americans is on his hands. He knows his refusal to allow the CIA station to help from the start, and to send help from Italy is the reason for those, “Not Optimal Deaths, at Al Qaeda’s hands, on 9/11. Obama desperately wanted to hide the truth from the American people until at least after the election so he came up with a Cover Story and he lied. what is key here is the fact they “disobeyed” orders to go and try and help. Then you would never deploy a single soldier, esp. recon units. It’s called the fog of war, friend. You never know what is going on, fully. So you arrive with plenty of force to compensate.

Even with the uncertainties and the distinct possibility of failure, how could we not have responded with overwhelming force? Even if it was too late to rescue anyone, and even if more Americans died in the action, an immediate and forceful response was critical to signal that we don’t stand by while Americans are attacked. Instead, we sent a message to every terrorist in the world that you can attack our embassies, consulates, and our citizens and we will do absolutely nothing about it.

Check the timeline, but I believe if they had begun a mission when the first request for support was made, they would have been there when the laser first met the target.
Just a naive suggestion : Gov. Romney could pledge to pardon Pres. Obama for any actions or lack of action in Libya. He could do this before the Nov. 6 election, on condition that Pres. Obama waive executive privilege, and concurrently issue an order ( before his last day as President, whenever and / or however that may occur ) directing all U S government and military personnel to testify when called by a court or Congressional investigation.
With the huge problems ahead, it would not be a good idea to let this horrible situation freeze all the other important discussions and adjustments ahead for the new President and Congress over a Watergate length / style proceeding.
I suspect this is not the last attack, and unity, clarity, and flexible options in responses / RoE will be critical.

Air support makes up the difference in inferior strength on the ground. Surveillance drones, UAVs, etc. are the things we pay for to prevent the sacrifice of human life. Failure to use them merits a long list of adjectives including ignorance, stupidity, cowardice, psychopathy, and cold heartlessness. Let us understand why these “facts” are emerging now. People with courage and conscience are willing to sacrifice for the nation. Agree. I’m not excusing the adminstration for removing the DoD unit that WOULD have made a difference. But the transaction time needed to understand what was happening, the need to contact people in the chain of command who would make a rescue happen, the time it takes to notify the go teams, assemble the assets that would actually respond to the call for rescue and launch them, bounced up against the speed with which things were happening, makes the explanations that it was tactically impossible to aid the Ambassador compelling.
You may want to rescue the units ambushed in Somalia (Black Hawk Down), but if you have no idea how desperate their circumstances are in terms of the enemy they face, you don’t send in undermanned, underarmed assets that are likely to get themselves killed as well. You have to know more than that someone has issued a mayday.
So how many more Americans, military and civilian, will die all over the world for years to come now that the terrorists know we just stand by and watch?

There will be a Congressional investigation and they will have no problems telling who knew what from the message traffic. Messages are logged on Both ends. That is so if one end is destroyed, the other end will be available later when the ‘lessons learned’ team goes over the after action report. I suspect the White House is unaware of military SOP and thought they could create a cover-up. We will know by March or April of next year. I don’t think Romney would be able to stop the military side of the investigation.

Well, I guess someone in the chain of command didn’t get the word from Obama that we don’t rely on slow moving battleships anymore: we have ready reaction forces that can go airborne at a moments notice, striking our enemies from ships under the sea called submarines, flying in from ships that planes land on and take off from, and we even have unmanned drones in place of old fashion kamikaze suicide bombers at the press of the president’s easy button. It is am amazing thing that is happening – and all too surreal. The President is simply not acknowledging the facts of the cover-up – even as the facts continue to mount day after day after day. For the President to acknowledge or – God forbid – admit that the administration…in the midst of all their pandering to the Arab world…had dropped the ball at the expense of those four men in Libya, it would mean admitting or acknowledging that his foreign policies do not work and never will. It would mean admitting or acknowledging what we on the conservative edge have known for a long, long time: the Muslim extremist ideology can not be extinguished – ever. The consulate at Benghazi was under a large scale, heavily armed, terrorist attack.
Of course, we now know many other details of the attack. Less than two hours after the September 11 attack began, someone gave the order not to send in a rescue team in order to save American lives.

The hot potato was: who exactly nixed a rescue mission one hour after the initial terrorist attack at Benghazi? When General Petraeus announced to the press that it wasn’t the CIA who gave the no rescue order, the arrow pointed directly at the White House.
Obama must, at this exact moment, be feeling like he’s in a microwave oven; the hot spot. So ironic.
The CIA didn’t refuse repeated Benghazi calls for life saving help. Special Forces didn’t. Ready combat teams, less than two hours away from Benghazi, in Italy didn’t. No U.S. military refused to rescue the battling bastards of Benghazi, but one wimp, mole, Marxist President who disgraces the White House every second of every day he takes up space there.
What we learned today.
One hour and fifteen minutes after the first shot was fired at the consulate, the paper tiger didn’t change his stripes.
The pipsqueak President wasted no time giving the orders for the Delta Boys and all the other mission ready special forces to stand down. I heard somebody say that the guy who gave this order should be hung from the rafters. He’s morally guilty of the murder of Sean Smith, Tyrone Woods, Glen Doherty and Chris Stevens.

Sure if strong military force was needed to help the ambassador, that would maybe have created some speculation about Obama’s foreign policy and about his football spiking about terrorist leader killings. But inspite of that, a succseful military campaign to rescue an ambassador would’ve actually helped his poll numbers! Yes, his numbers at this time were very favorable, but what a boost he would have gotten on top of that! Most presidents would have seen this as a reelection no-brainer! Either way he’s going to still win reelection! The electoral college of union-thugged-out Ohio, Pennsylvania, Nevada etc is an impenitrable firewall to Romney’s election! And even if its so close that it has to go to the supreme court, well the (once stealth but now overt progressive-activist) justice John Roberts will get Obama reelected!
