Having spent a good bit of time nursing a GLD (ground Laser Designator) in several garden spots around the world, something from the report jumped out at me.One of the former SEALs was actively painting the target. That means that Specter WAS ON STATION! Probably an AC130U. A ground laser designator is not a briefing pointer laser. You do not “paint” a target until the weapons system/designator is synched; which means that the AC130 was on station.Only two places could have called off the attack at that point; the WH situation command (based on POTUS direction) or AFRICOM commander based on information directly from the target area.If the AC130 never left Sigonella (as Penetta [sic] says) that means that the Predator that was filming the whole thing was armed.If that SEAL was actively “painting” a target; something was on station to engage! In my day, the C-130 was named Puff, the Magic Dragon for the firestorm that was delivered, once the miniguns and cannons opened up! Also, the mortar attack consisted of four mortar rounds that began falling at four am their time and ended in a couple of minutes. One round hit the top of the building, where Doherty and Woods were manning a heavy machine gun and supposedly a targeting laser. They both died and David Uban, the State Department agent, who had been in the main consulate building with Chris Stevens and Sean Smith, was severly wounded from that one mortar round!!!
Doherty, was a member of the response team flown in from Tripoli, and had only arrived at the CIA Annex around thirty minutes before he was killed!!! But!!! Jennifer Griffin, Faux News chief DOD liar, said that he was one of the three CIA agents to disobey the stand down order and go resecue the folks at the consulate around 10:15 pm, their time. Kind of hard to do, when you are still in Tripoli, would you not agree????

Sam, maybe you should follow your own advice. How do you know there were no gunships deployed to northern Africa? Also, FYI, modern SPECTRE and SPOOKY gunships are several orders of magnitude more precise than the old Puffs. So, there would have been NO collateral damage from AC-130 support. Yes, they’re that good nowadays.
I have personally called for CAS from the AC-130 and they walked fire to within 50 meters of our position, highly accurate and we felt safe, so using the excuse that urban areas are too high risk for collateral damage to civlians is just bullshit! This weapon system was denied in Mogadishu, and when MH-60s and Little Birds had to be used for CAS, we know the disastrous result. SECDEF Les Aspin was forced to resign over this horrendous decision to deny TF Ranger support. To hear it happen once again in Benghazi brings back horrible memories and the SECSTATE, SECDEF, and DIR CIA need to be relieved and the POTUS needs to be placed under oath to find out what he knew and whenhe knew it.
Times have changed significantly since “your day”. The Spectre is pinpoint accurate with everything it employs. In addition, we may be “guests” in Libya, but, and this is IMPORTANT…so listen carefully, our consulates / embassies are SOVEREIGN U.S. territory. We have every right and are, in fact, obligated to protect that soil with everything available. I (and I know that I am far from being alone on this) don’t give a rat’s *ss about collateral damage when Americans are in danger. We didn’t start the attack on the Consulate, but we damn sure could have finished it.

If some Arab terrorists beseiged the US Counselate (it’s just a lawyer’s office in the German colony) in my own city of Haifa, would you recommend the bombers come in and level the area, which includes a shopping mall?
If this would be US practice, every sane nation would demand the US immediately remove all embassies, counselates, offices, and (for the matter) citizens from their countries.

Ok…though Sam Bear is acting like a tool, he is correct on a couple of key points. Chief among them: There were no AC-130s on station in North Africa.
Everything i’m reading about UNIFIED PROTECTOR fails to mention the presence of AC-130s in Sep of 2012. Also, if they were there under UNIFIED PROTECTOR auspices, that means operational control would have been transferred to NATO. That is unlikely, which militates against AC-130s on site for UNIFIED PROTECTOR support.
I keep hearing that somebody (CIA, SECDEF, POTUS) issued one or more orders to “stand down” or otherwise not assist the on-ground contact. Depending on which stories you believe, there were up to six of these orders. Yet there are no live transcripts or other documents that codify these orders. I find it hard to believe there isn’t one log anywhere that supports the contention.
This idea that Woods was lasing targets expecting fire support assumes that there was radio contact and terminal guidance was being provided. I”m not sure that there is any info to corroborate that.
I agree there is sufficient need for torches and pitchforks. But lets make sure we know what we’re being angry about.

Has that initial news report been confirmed? Everything I’ve seen since seems to be based on the initial report, without any indications of follow up fact checking. If the defender was painting a target, then there had to be a gunship or armed Predator on site. But was he painting the target? Reported, yes, but how securely confirmed?
The ‘what’ we know, it is the ‘WHY’ that is the problem.
Four people died. Three from live fire and one from smoke inhalation. Was all of the live fire deaths at the Annex and the only death from the Embassy compound the Ambassador? It appears so. So what was the attack really about?

Thanks for providing the C130 Specter info. I served as an Army Infantry Officer on the Korean DMZ in 1970/71 in the only US combat unit in country.We were considered an elite unit and had our own Air Force and Army F.O.’s We had the capability to call in “Puff the Magic Dragon” in those days which had incredible fire power and was fairly accurate, and we could be as close as 25-50 meters from the enemy and be safe calling it in. So my question to you in this. Could the present day C130 have the capability of just killing the attackers and avoiding killing non combatants? [Although I doubt there were few Libyan non combatants in the immediate area of the embassay that night.]

The consulate did not have the “minimum required security” – (why they keep wanting to call it a facility, or anything other than an Embassy or Consulate?) Also, they wanted it to appear that everything was normal there, in spite of two earlier attacks, and real warnings.

The heros on the roof of the embassy were painting the target, the mortar pit, with a laser. This is a very effective way of getting laser guided munitions right on target. The Spectre has laser guided weapons. Hence, they could have hit that target and more, had they heeded the call for help.
Actually, the Gunship can designate but doesn’t carry laser guided weapons.
Having resources available, and not only not using them, but telling them to stand down, causing the murder of 4 Americans is nothing less than high treason. This makes me so angry I could spit.

Obama didn’t leave the golf course on 5/2/11 until 2:04. The attack began at 1:00. Obama wasn’t told of the attack until it had begun because, Clinton didn’t want him to cancel the attack, as he or his De Facto President Valerie Jarrett had done on two previous occasions. Obama took credit for something he had nothing to do with while he played his 66th round of golf for the year. When you see the pictures of the attack in the situation room, Obama is still in his golf clothes & he is very angry! Benghazi was set up in it’s entirety by Obama. Obama had Muslim Brotherhood in the White House in July. The meeting was about 20,000 SAM that Qaddafi had, that are now missing. As well as Russia wanted the chemical weapons. The 2 warehouses on that compound were suppose to be headed to Turkey to arm the Syrian aka Al Qaeda rebels, but an aid ship had already been intercepted so they had hit a snag. Just like the gun running scheme Obama & Holder had set up in 2009 Fast & Furious. One note that I’d like to pass along, why was the FAST team that was ordered to go to Benghazi the week receding the attack order to Stand down the day before the attack? Under no circumstances will a airstrike such as this, in a built-up area, be authorized without the knowledge and approval of the President of the United States, unless it is a declared or duly/authorized war … and that means an Act of Congress.
Are we at war with Libya? No. POTUS gave the order to stand down, and I strongly suspect that it was to cover up his “FnF-style” gun-running operation in Libya.

Good advice. Maybe you should heed it. The War Powers Resolution allows the president (no capitalization intended) the power to insert US forces under three specific circumstances:
(1) a declaration of war,
(2) specific statutory authorization, or
(3) a national emergency created by attack upon the United States, its territories or possessions, or its armed forces.
A case can clearly be made that the consulate was US territory. Even if you don’t agree, do you believe a president wouldn’t use that for justification if he felt it was necessary to protect the Ambassador and his entourage?
We don’t have to be at war with Libya and that sorry excuse for commander-in- chief doesn’t need authorization from Congress. In 1980, Carter used the War Powers Resolution w/o consulting Congress in the failed rescue attempt. We were not at war with Iran.
In 1983, Reagan had Grenada invaded w/o first consulting Congress and w/o a declared war. It didn’t involve our territory or armed forces, the pretext was to rescue medical students. Clearly, if it was used in this situation there is ample reason to use it in Benghazi.
In 1989, Bush invaded Panama with a few hours notice to Congress but Congress wasn’t in session at the time. When they reconvened they passed a resolution stating the president acted “decisively and appropriately in ordering United States forces to intervene in Panama.”
In the real world, a president who wasn’t more concerned about his own ass and re-election would have acted first and asked for forgiveness later if he had any doubts.
In the real world, a secretary of defense who doesn’t use any and all means at his disposal to protect his forces isn’t qualified to be a dog-catcher much less the honor of commanding and controlling US forces. His statement “you don’t deploy forces into harm’s way without knowing what’s going on; without having some real-time information about what’s taking place” is totally reprehensible. He had a drone on site. He had direct communications with the CIA annex throughout the night. He had access to aircraft and forces in Africa and the Mediterranean that could have and should have been used to provide his so-called awareness needed. If he did have access to an AC-130, that’s the only information he required. Turn it over to men trained to get the job done in a situation like this. Hell, if our leaders had to wait for real-time information or for a clear picture every time they acted we would’ve been overrun a long time ago.
Make no mistake, IMO the president, secretary of state, defense secretary are liars or incompetent. If they are liars they should be tried for murder and treason and it’s clear to me they are incompetent at best.

An Ambassador technically has the same rank as a four star General. The default order for this rank is to assist with any assets available. Only the Secretary of Defense or the President could issue such a stand down order. Since Obama said he was in the Situation room as this unfolded then he is the one that issued the order.

The state has literally trademarked the slogan “Don’t Mess With Texas”.
Apparently they wanted to sent two people to Texas, both in Austin as “Election Monitors”. One from Denmark and one from the United Kingdom.
There are only 57 Monitors being sent here, with 13 going to D.C. and 44 being sent in pairs to specific cities in 22 states.
Their stated purpose is to election monitors around the United States on Election Day in an effort to “monitor conservative groups for voter suppression or intimidation at polling places.”

My father flew the precursor to Spectre back in Nam 68-69. It was called Spooky when they flew at night. My Dad had a few good stories about the effectiveness of that aircraft. Well, we walked in and a black gentleman of whose size I don’t recall seeing since I left the Marines, about 6’4″ and 300 lbs easily, came over and without saying a word, gave my Dad a bearhug for about 30 seconds or so. For you young folks out here, the forerunner of this AC-130 was developed and used in Vietnam and called “Puff” it saved literally a hundred or more Special Forces bases from being overrun by the NVA/ VC because it could put one round in every square foot of a foot ball field with one 3 second burst.
The AC-130 is more refined by far and it can put pin-point fire on a target – especially one that has been painted by a laser as appears to be the case here. The Al-Q mortar team would have gone down and perhaps the Americans still alive could have been saved.
All the talk about not having sufficient forces to get to Benghazi is BS, of course, but here we apparently have an immediately available and very accurate weapon with which to provide assistance to our men.

This is something I’ve been wondering about since reading that someone was lasing (laser designating) the attackers.
Why would someone do that, if they didn’t think/expect to have support? It’s arguably more exposed to be in a window or rooftop, handling a designator, than hunkered down, when there are people shooting at you.

The reporting to date has said that the two seals were killed because they were exposed (probably on a rooftop, terrace our courtyard) trying to keep the attackers at a distance so that they would not overrun the “safe” house. If you were desperate and you assumed (as you should) that your government was going to move heaven and earth to save you – I think you might lase in the hope that some air asset would respond – even if you were not certain. After all you are already exposed to fire anyway (Its not like the attackeres would not have seen their location as they fired a “heavy machinegun”.
If there was an AC 130 H on station (or otherwise available) and it was denied permission to fire that would we one of the most monumental betrayals of Americans in service to a naive policy that has ever occurred. I just want to be sure about this.
One reason I doubt that one was on station is that I think the folks in the AC 130 H would have also disobeyed orders not to fire under those crcumstances. They would have acted and taken their lumps if they were later accused of doing wrong.

Your indicator that something armed was overhead was that the guys on the ground were actively lasing the attackers. After rereading the initial report, my interpretation is that the operators asked for AC-130′s to be launched from Sigonella (approximately two hours away). I also suspect the laser was a laser pointer (rather than a designator) which can be seen by anyone with NVGs on.
Yeah, that’s what I was thinking was what kind of laser designator are we talking about here. Some laser designators just illuminate a target with a beam of energy that can only be seen with night vision goggles — sort of an invisible spot light. It could be also that he was lasing the target to get a firing solution so that he could relay the information the moment an air asset came on station.
I’m angry with the administration here – but I do not take this report to mean that there was a spectre in orbit above. I take it to mean that they hoped one was (or another air asset). From everything I have heard the only assets in the air were drones (not all of which are armed).

Well, the first question is were they actually there or not. Its still something of an assumption. There is no doubt they would have been decisive- this is exactly the operation they were made for. Don’t know about the carrier but there were F16s in Italy less than 500 miles from Benghazi, that’s less than one hour. They also had refueling capability in the region.

Why was the request denied? Because it is election season, and it makes the incumbent look bad if there are hostilities so close to an election. So four Americans gave their lives to help re-elect Barack Obama. What a fine epitaph.

Reading the Wikipedia link to Operation Unified Protector, it says that the start date was March 2011, and an end date of October 2011 (222 days). Is there anything more recent that would indicate whether or not there was a Specter based in Libya? Or would “Spooky” have to fly in from another location? The fact that one of the CIA operatives did “sparkle target” would indicate that there possibly was one on station, no matter where the bird originated from.

As someone completely ignorant of all the machinery of war, chain of command etc. it is hard for me to understand much of what is discussed here. On the question of “Spooky’s” location, first, I assume that is the airplane (same as Spectre?) that could’ve blown out the enemy who were firing mortars. Is that right? Then the question of how far away it was: No one has said how fast it can get say, from somewhere in Italy to where it was needed near Benghazi. How close would it have to be to fire on the painted target? If it was 450 miles away, could it have gotten there in time to save at least Ty Woods, who seems to have been the last Seal to die, some 4 -7 hours after the attack started? Please, when you military folks comment, remember there are people like me who do not understand your combat language, know absolutely nothing about how decisions are made in battle or who makes them, how the weapons work or why they would’ve worked in this situation, etc. It is important to convey this basic information that is so well understood by you that you don’t realize how mysterious it sounds to people like me. The concept of a slow moving transport aircraft was first tried by the Germans in WW2.
I cannot provide a link because I read about it in a book by a Fallschirmjäger. The Germans took JU-52″s ( a knock off of the ford tri-motor) and mounted 4 MG-34′s in them with lots of ammo. It didn’t work so well. The problem with close air support (CAS) is it has no persistence ( In milspeak that means they hang hang out and look for trouble).
The biggest problem is a lack of ammo. The typical WW2 fighter carried around 300 rounds per gun. A 6 shots per second, it doesn’t take long to shoot off all your ammo.
Modern fighters are not much better as far as their machine guns.
So in Vietnam, the Air Force built ‘gunships’ because they had a lot of guns and thousands of rounds of ammo. They used old WW2 transport planes because they were cheap. After the idea was proven, the Air Force use a modern transport (C-130) as the platform. The different names denote the different combinations of weapons and sensors.
Take some bits off a ‘Spector’ and move them to a ‘Spooky’ and now it’s a ‘Spector’.

This was a planned hostage-taking gone bad. Lets not forget that the hostage exchange likely would’ve been for the “blind sheik” that the muslim brotherhood was very publicly demanding at the time. He tried to make sure all the guards were disarmed beforehand, when he heard that the former seals were fighting with a heavy machine gun he probably flew in to a rage and demanded to know how they got live ammunition. The AQ contracted for the job were probably told to expect no resistance, when they came under fire they assumed they’d been set up and killed everyone (with some rape thrown in for good measure). Makes as much sense as anything else. The heroism of our men may just have foiled the one’s grand scheme.

Ty Woods defied his orders and did what his honorable AMERICAN heart told him to do. ALL of us who love our country and our military men and women understand and applaud his actions. We grieve the loss of all four of our people, but for him there is an added measure of grief when we consider what his last lonely, terrifying hours were like. How betrayed he must have felt when no help arrived!
He responded as we would’ve tried to do had we been there; he responded like an American. That’s why Obama and his ilk were taken by surprise; they don’t have the same values as we and they couldn’t have imagined anyone acting so bravely and independently to save others.
This warrior went into that hell believing with all his heart that back-up was on the way. He relied on ALL those above him to do their duty and respond with aid, but all of them, including many in the military, walked away from their duty. They left him, the last American standing, alone and exhausted and still fighting on that roof, abandoned by his president and by the military that trained him, to be not just killed, but “killed off” and silenced.
Woods’s courage and honor stand in stark contrast to the cowardice shown by his military “superiors” when they chose to follow the orders of a cowardly un-American administration and withhold the powerful military response that should have been deployed to save him and possibly others as well.
This incident, by itself, sends the clearest message possible to our enemies that not only is our WH compromised and on its knees before our worst enemy, but so are those high up in our military who failed to do their primary duty, which is to protect Americans on American soil. And it raises doubts about the loyalty of those officials and what their actions might be if called upon, illegally, to act against American citizens at home.
It no longer matters where Obama was born; he is an anti-American alien, if not by virtue of his birth, then by virtue of the indoctrination he received at the hands of his Marxist/Communist/Islamist/America-hating family and “fellow travelers” as he was growing up to become a “world citizen”. He is hostile to this country and what we stand for, and he has succeeded in compromising the hearts and minds, and the honor, of some of our highest military officials. If the voters don’t handle things in a few days, then he has to go some other way. Impeachment, forced by the will of the majority of Americans, is the place to start.
Too bad we can’t impeach the military authorities who stood sucking their thumbs when Obama, in effect, ordered the certain death of our people. Were they too watching this slaughter in real time? What did they think when they saw the exhausted Ty Woods disappear in a red mist? Did a moan of sorrow pass through the room, or a sigh of relief that it was over and they could go to bed? If they can stand by and allow one of our brightest and best people — a man who had just done the work of several to save those who were trapped at the consulate –be blown away on orders of our enemy combatant president, what are they capable of doing to the rest of us on Obama’s orders? This incident has shaken my faith in our military and heightened my fear: fear for the safety of our men and women in combat who are so vulnerable to the incompetence and moral corruption of those who “lead” them; and fear for us at home whose chances would be no better than Ty Woods’s if our corrupt officials ordered our military to be used against us, or to stand down and let us be killed by insurgents in our own homes.
Lastly, I’d like to know the dollar value of the assets that were available to repulse the terrorist attack in Libya, but were ordered to stand down. What does a drone cost? What was it costing to operate it that night to inform the lookie-loos in the situation room at the WH. What was the value of the missiles etc it was or should have been armed with — the ones that could’ve saved the situation? And what about the cost of all that high-end spy hardware that brought real time video of events to officials who might as well have been sitting around eating popcorn? What does a “spooky” airplane cost to buy, maintain and operate? And what about the training and maintenance of the fighters themselves? Does anyone know what it costs to train, outfit and maintain one of our special forces fighters? Does anyone know how many we have? Does anyone even have an estimate of the value of the assets that sat idle on the orders of incompetents while our people were slaughtered?
We taxpaying Americans need to know this. We entrusted our govt to develop these assets specifically to defend America and Americans, and we trusted that they would be used for this purpose. However, apparently the WH and military are operating under different priorities and these assets have been re-tasked for some as yet unknown reason or purpose. We need answers!
And we need to see Obama, Jarrett and the rest of their anti-American cabal in the administration perp walked straight to Gitmo and then “renditioned” to ascertain what the rest of their agenda against America entails.

The title of this article does a disservice to the discussion. Having read the FOX News piece and the excerpt above, there is no indicaiton that an AC130 was on-scene, only that this resource might have been in theatre. To extend this to saying that the “Obama administration refused to let it fire” is misleading in the extreme.

Paul, laser target designators are not randomly used to identify targets in vague hopes that some random air asset will be wandering by. There is a Special Operations communications network connecting the CIA assets on the ground, military special operation assets (in this instance, including Delta) and the gunship, and other air, sea, and land assets.
The CIA operators lugged a laser designator to the roof because they A) had identified a target and B) knew through their communications network which air assets were on standby, loitering overhead.
The fact that they bothered to call for fire, and lased the target, would only have occurred if the aircraft were overhead and the men calling in fire expected an immediate strike. Period. End of story.
The CIA’s operators are the best there are, recruited from the elite of Delta and SEALs. They knew exactly what they were doing, where the assets were, and how to most effectively use them.
The Obama Administration refused to let them fire.

Was the former SEAL painting the target with lasers or not? If a gunship wasn’t at the scene why would he do that? So the drone could see it? He did that for a reason but help was called off. It’s the ‘called off’ part we should be concerned about. Obama was more worried about how a failed rescue effort would affect his campaign than the lives of four Americans. C130 gunships do not normally operate in defended airspace. With 10,000 to 20,000 Ground to Air (MANPDs) missing from Gaddafi’s arsenal, maybe the risk of a shoot down was considered to high.

Heard a story about an AC-130 in Panama when we removed Noriega in 1989. US forces were pinned down by a sniper in a high rise. They called in air support. The guys on the ground ID’ed the building. ‘Which floor?’ came the call from above. ‘OK, which window?’ Followed by a 105mm shell that removed the problem. Air superiority has its advantages.
AC-130 gunships are remarkably accurate. VERY accurate with a lased target. All the weapons in the world don’t matter when you have a COWARD for president.

However, we do know that there were at least two UAS assets overhead during the 7-hour attack. So is it possible that the CIA was calling for fires from the UAS, instead of an AC-130U?

The reporter made a very strong statement about the reliability of the information she had received, stating that it came from sources (plural) on the ground…that the reliability of her information is “as good as it gets.”

That is possible. When someone paints a target with a laser, depending upon who’s on station, anything from a JDAM on down can come falling from the sky to spread hate and discontent. The Stinger II variant can carry GBU-39′s (GBU stands for Guided Bomb Unit). If he was lasing the target, then it’s not an unreasonable assumption that an aircraft with some kind of guided bomb unit was either en route or on station, waiting for permission to fire.
I think I should clarify a bit. When I mentioned the Stinger II variant, I forgot to say that it’s a variant of the AC-130.
Minor point, but you don’t “paint” a target with a laser designator. (You “paint” with radar.) It’s called “sparkling” the target, because through NVGs the laser point looks like it sparkles.
The only thing I don’t get here is what there was to gain by holding fire. I don’t see any motive for doing so. Not taking the threat seriously enough can be chalked up to basic incompetence. Having the immediate ability to act and choosing to do absolutely nothing can’t be explained away so easily. And it’s certainly not as if the administration would have wanted those people killed. It makes no sense.
They supposedly ask permission from the Libyan government and didn’t get a response. This administration is very big on getting permission from Muslims. They didn’t ask congress to go to war with Libya but did ask the Arab League.
That’s the only credible thing I can think of. It’s easy to imagine the Libyan government would be confused and unable to respond quickly, and easier to imagine Obama would simply wait. Scrambling aircraft should have been first priority though, and frankly once a gunship was on the scene, screw permission.
That’s one of the reasons so many people have been putting forward the idea that the whole thing was an “october surprise” involving an exchange of the blind sheik for amb Stevens. If the AQ guys on the ground were supposed to just get in, kidnap the ambassador and a few others, and get out, that would provide rationale for the president not attacking them.
The other options is that he’s a feckless coward who cares more about the feelings of muslims than about the lives of Americans.
I fail to see how such an exchange would benefit the President in any way. Even if it was successful, it means 1) we would have negotiated with terrorists, 2) we showed weakness to them, and 3) we actually believed this bunch of brutal thugs who have shown no compunctions about butchering women and children were more interested in making a deal than putting on more jihad theater, and trusted that assumption enough to let them play their hand.

The fact that the paraphrase in the story is “a laser pointing at the Libyan mortar team” makes me think it was most likely a laser pointer, which is both a lot easier to carry, and far more ubiquitous than a laser designator. Moreover, one doesn’t normally designate a target until 30″ or less before weapons impact . . . long after any ROE issues are settled.
And, BTW, you can’t see a laser designation with eyes or NVGs. You need a laser spot tracker, which I’m not even sure a AC-130 has. Anyone with NVGs can see a pointer.
Laser designators are infra-red; the Spectre has IR targeting sensors (and just about everything else that one can cram into an aircraft).

I’ve also flown hundreds of CAS missions (many using laser designators and pointers, sometimes both). I don’t need some other retired operator’s opinion of what he read in a Fox news report.
The report doesn’t say anything about a GLD designating a target. It says:
My choices are to think either: 1) he had a laser pointer along, or 2) was lugging a GLD in a country with no obvious reason to think he’d be able to use it. I choose 1.
In that case, pointing a laser becomes a relatively commonplace act of trying to talk your comrades’ eyes onto the target or direct fire, with no need to invent an AC-130 whose absence in the story is otherwise inexplicable.

Even back in my day in Vietnam the C-130 gunships could put sustained fire in a bucket in the middle of a football field and then turn around and fill every inch of that same football field with lead. They just circle their target and pivot on their point of impact.
1) The platform in question is an aircraft, not a ship. It can engage individual human targets on the ground accurately from ten thousand feet in the air.
2) Of the long range weapons that actually are installed on our ships, all of them are capable of “fly through window” accuracy.
3) It would appear that this American is considerably more intelligent than you on the matter.

Could it be he was told: hey, you get up on the roof while we call in for support. Find that damned mortar and target it, there’s gotta be something up there that can take it out. I did and the timeline is murky. The article said the special team at the CIA annex first heard shots at 9:40 pm; requested permission to investigate/assist; were refused and rerequested an hour later, then defied the second order to stand down. That puts them at the US mission (it’s not a consulate) around 10:45 which fits with the emails, much discussed lately. The mission is on fire as the attack ends and the looting begins. They return to the annex at midnight just as it comes under att ack by mortar. Were they followed? At 3 a.m. a US-friendly Libya militia arrives to assist and at some point take control of 3 Libyan attackers. At 4 a.m. the fourth mortar round lands inside the annex ands kills Woods and Doherty, who had arrived with a response team from Tripoli. Meanwhile, at some point Sec. Panetta orders a military unit to fly to Italy. By the time they arrive at the Italian Base the attack on the annex is over. Do I have anything wrong?
Woods was at the CIA annex when this started. Doherty joined him at the consulate, not sure where he was prior to this. Neither was part of the team inbound from Benghazi
A spooky does not make any use of laser guided munitions. All of its weapons are targeted via on-board fire control. What it can see are friendly IR beacons, which is quite helpful when you’re trying to not spam the good guys, and any other form of focused infrared light.
Laser designators are used only for laser-guided munitions like JDAMs, the plethora of other LGBs, and various guided missiles. Basically a big bomb that gets released at 30k feet, or a missile that gets launched off of something some distance away, and then flies itself towards the target. In the situation here, it is unlikely any operator would have asked for such a weapon to be released into such a small area, as it would turn everything in the immediate area into a smoking hole. Also, while it’s possible some of the operators on the ground may have just happened to have a AN/PED-1 floating around, it is pretty unlikely.
What is much more likely is that they were equipped with AN/PEQ-2s on their M4 rifles. These contain what amounts to a pair of infrared laser “pointer” diodes– one has a narrow beam lens for aiming the weapon while using NVGs, the other a wide beam lens for illuminating targets, again primarily for use with NVGs.
A spooky certainly could see a AN/PEQ-2 (or as is likely, several) lighting up the bad guys, and then proceed to light up said bad guys the loud way, with extreme precision, without turning the entire neighborhood into a smoking crater. As was said, the platform was pretty much designed for this task.
The decision not to permit the 130 to deal with the threat, effectively consigning several Americans to gruesome murders, is beyond reprehensible. Any American President who would do such a thing has broken their oath of office in spades.
It’s unclear to me where the nearest gunship was stationed. This article mentions two that were stationed as part of a Libyan operation in March. The US mission in Benghazi is not a consulate. In the real world, the military can request that a sanction be executed against an enemy. But that’s all they can do, unless the action is taking place in a designated warzone. Since Libya had not been designated as such, the only person who can authorize such an action is the President.

Not only does the report *not* say there was a gunship on the scene, but we’re talking about firing down into a *city*. Our targeting systems have come a long way, but I’d be very wary of collateral damage in such a scenario.
There is no Honor left in our present administration. This morning as this report was being broadcast, my father, a Korean war vet, was brought to tears for the usless loss of the four Americans. He could not believe the country he fought for left their people unprotected and did not come to their aid when they desperatley needed it. I have never seen this kind of emotion from my dad before. The gunship a) was not there, b) would not have been useful, and c) very likely would never have gotten clearance to fire at all.

The only guy who can authorize the movement of assets between AORs is the SecDef. Where was he in all this?

I heard a story today from someone inside the military that I trust entirely. The story was in reference to General Ham that Panetta referenced in the quote below.

General Ham then received the order to stand down. His response was to screw it, he was going to help anyhow. Within 30 seconds to a minute after making the move to respond, his second in command apprehended General Ham and told him that he was now relieved of his command.

This weapons system is designed for use against troop concentrations in open terrain. It is designed to put a bullet into every square inch of a target area. It shreds all personnel – friend and foe alike – and lightly armored vehicles. It is not a precision weapon. It is a weapon of mass destruction. It is not the sort of weapon a responsible person would use in an urban area or when friendly forces are around.

Opening fire with an AC-130 gunship on Libyan soil would have been an act of war against the Libyan government; at that time, not your enemy. Essentially, the US had the choice to (A) play dumb and let them get away with it, or (B) retaliate, make an international incident, and risk letting the entire world see that the USA (and specifically the Obama Administration) was interfering in Syria’s affairs and generally destabilizing the region. What is clear is that we are being subjected to a cover-up by someone, and circumstances certainly suggest that the White House is complicit. I remember Watergate, and it started this way, then just went downhill. We’re already at the stage where the highest level officials are putting out contradictory stories. General Hamm is reported to have said that nobody asked his assistance. Secretary Panetta says he decided not to go in with the concurance of Hamm. There is a rumor that someone was relieved. Petraeus states that nobody at CIA refused to help. People on the ground, apparently CIA agents, say that they requested assistance from their chain of command and were refused. The President says he gave unequivocal orders to assist. If there was a Presidential direct order, it will be logged somewhere.
Similar confusion saturated Watergate as various officials scrambled to evade responsibility. Now one thing is clear: modern communications systems log everything. So whether we’re allowed to see it or not, there will be a considerable electronic audit trail demonstrating what actually happened.

Congressman Issa’s committee is probably our best bet to get some testimony under oath and perhaps find out what happened. Just look at it this way: If there was anything in this whole sordid affair that could be spun to make Obama look good the administration would’ve released in long ago. Likewise if there was any way to pin the whole thing on a low level flunkie they would’ve done it long ago. I worked on the C-119K’s in Nam (Phan Rang). The FLIR was a great target finder! The c-130′s back then were powerful and I am sure moreso now! There is no reason they should have been told to stand-down! The guy on the ground wouldn’t have been painting the target if support was not there ! IMHO

I’ve served two tours in Afghanistain. One tour under Busch and one under Obama, both administrations often refused clearance to fire. Administrations tend to value the possible complications of firing on a politically inconvenient target over the lives of three or four Americans. The fact that many of you are just now getting mad about it is the sad part to me. This has been going on for 30 years.

Four good men died in a planned attack, I have no doubt of that. But as for a AC-130u being there and someone lazing targets with a designator. Again what is your source of information. How do we know this is a fact. The AC-130u was built after a AC-130 was ost in the Gulf War. There is and has been a mission to rid Libya of SAM’s, so they dont fall into the wrong hands. Why we would we snd in an AC-130u into a a country with lots of SAMS. And if this AC-130u was in Ben as you say it was, that crew would have been briefed on threats and there mission. Again, I question the use of the term “painting” with a laser designator. Every operator I know (and I work with quite a few of them and have spent time with many in Afghanistan) uses the term “sparkle,” not “paint” when refering to marking a target with a laser designator. Pilots use the term too.

As a Civilian contractor, you are not subject to the Universal Code of Military Justice, or to Military commands as would be an active duty member of the U.S. armed services.
Even for the military, we’ve been told over and over that a soldier has the obligation to disobey orders that violate conscience or human rights. Remember the Nuremburg trials after WWII.
