Georgia Dem Introduces Bill 'to Protect the Sanctity of the Voting Process'

A Georgia Democrat introduced a bill yesterday to put tighter federal controls on jurisdictions using electronic voting machines.

Rep. Hank Johnson’s (D-Ga.) Verifying Official Totals for Elections Act would amend the Help America Vote Act of 2002 to require the software or source code used in federal elections in the National Software Reference Library at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST).

In the case of a contested election, the VOTE Act would allow “election officials and other qualified persons to review, examine and analyze the source code for improprieties before and after federal elections.”

“Computers can fail. And they’re never perfectly secure,” said Johnson. “The VOTE Act goes a long way to protect the sanctity of the voting process, provides transparency and helps ensure accuracy in elections – the fundamental underpinning of our democracy.”

Johnson’s office said that “more than 35 states have inadequate post-election audit procedures.”

There is one Republican among the nine co-sponsors of the bill: Rep. Roscoe Bartlett (R-Md.).

The legislation is endorsed by Common Cause, which receives funding from George Soros.
