Obama Celebrated July 4th by Subverting Its Meaning

Byron York reports that President Obama turned an Independence Day naturalization of some non-citizen US military members into a pitch for his immigration executive order:

But Obama did more than just welcome members of the military to American citizenship.  The naturalization ceremony took a political turn when the president defended his controversial decision to unilaterally enact some provisions of the DREAM Act — which would put illegal immigrants who came to this country at a young age on a path to citizenship, but which has failed to win passage in Congress — and also to renew his call for comprehensive immigration reform.

“We’re still perfecting our union, still extending the promise of America,” Obama told the group.  “That’s why, as another step forward, we’re lifting the shadow of deportation from serving — from deserving young people who were brought to this country as children.  It’s why we still need a DREAM Act — to keep talented young people who want to contribute to our society and serve our country.  It’s why we need — why America’s success demands — comprehensive immigration reform.”

The United States has always and hopefully will always welcome aspiring Americans who agree with our nation’s ideals into the ranks of our military.

The founders declared independence from the British crown to, among other things, establish a nation that would be a nation of laws and not of men or the royal whim. Obama’s own immigration order violated that spirit. A year before he did it, he even admitted that it would be an illegal act, twice. He did it because he knew the divided Congress could not stop him from doing it.

America’s success does not in any way “demand” “comprehensive immigration reform.” American’s success depends on maximizing individual freedom of thought, and maintaining a predictable legal and moral framework. America’s success depends on transparency of the government toward its citizens, and a robust federal system of power resting in the states not in a centralized government. Obama is a failure on all counts.
